How are we doing with home grown players?

Home grown, but how many others are there?
I received an e-mail earlier from a chap who will only ever be know as Eric asking about our home grown players quota and whether, with our current policy of recruiting from Europe, it is something that we should be concerned about.

The rules state that within our registered squad of 25 players, eight of them must be “home grown” players. Home-grown players do not have to be English; home-grown players are defined as those who “irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to 21st birthday.”

But with our transfer eyes firmly locked onto the French and Dutch leagues in search of value for money, is it possible to keep within the rules this season? Or the next? Or the one after that? We’ve already lost a couple of home grown players such as Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie, and with rumours over the future of Leon Best, Fraser Forster and Danny Simpson we could still lose a few more over the summer.

The good news is that we are fine next season. We have Tim Krul, Steve Harper, Rob Elliot, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson, Ryan Taylor, James Perch, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi which makes nine, even if all the players mentioned previously leave the club in this transfer window.

Realistically though, I would suggest that a lot of those players won’t exactly be first choice long term aside from Tim Krul and Steven Taylor, and even Taylor’s place in the team, whilst assured right now, may be under threat if we manage to bring in a good central defender in the summer. With that in mind, how are we looking longer term?

Well next season Shane Ferguson will have to be named as part of the 25 man squad if he is to feature for us. The same will apply for Sammy Ameobi and James Tavernier as all three turn 21 before before next January which means they can sneak in unregistered this term but will have to be named next time around.

All in all we have little to worry about on that front, so rest easy Eric. It’s all in hand and I’m sure that it is something that all clubs have in their thoughts whilst they are assembling their squads.

Well, hopefully anyway!

Yeah they are, but apparently THE RANGERS(as they’re now known) are sueing(spelling?) them, don’t know how but that’s the general chat about the town/school.

  2. SHARPY it leaves them in the ***** mate thats where, now police back in there they say,ime not bothered about players they have a few quid anyway, its the fans, like them or not its there club 😐

  3. Andy – it’s a real mess for Rangers like isn’t it, that previous owner wants fucking shooting.
Can’t say I particularly like or hate Rangers but certainly feel for their fans, must be devastating for that to happen to your footy club.
Can’t really blame the players either, coz to be fair to them, they don’t even know what league they’ll be playing in next season

They’ll be in the third division they can’t physically get enough votes for them to stay in the SPL. In a way I’m glad, never heard such obnoxious fans in my life, not friends with any supporters they’re all arseholes.

  5. Ice – I’m a bit surprised at the other clubs turning their backs on Rangers and voting no to allowing them to remain in the league …. that’s a bit tough on them as well like

  6. Sharpy…they’ve turned their back on them because for years they’ve made the huge financial advantage they have on the other teams even bigger by using money that wasn’t theirs to use by fiddling taxes etc. You can’t blame the teams for wanting them out as it would allow 3 or 4 other teams to now be in with a shout of Champions League football and the financial reward that brings. They’re not even certain of the 3rd div place as they have to apply for that 1 available place, though from a financial point of few I can’t see 3rd div teams voting no. As usual though, it’s the fans who suffer and not the feckers who did wrong in the first place.

  8. Andy – when did he give that interview tho mate? It may have only just been printed but he could have done the interview before Smith, Loverman and Guthrie left, after that you could be looking at Kadar, Ranger and Forster?!
Journalists are bastards mate, hold onto stories til they could make an impact

  10. Was just on a Celtic site and this guy was suggesting that us Newcastle supporters are constantly belittling them and the SPL, which I think is a ridiculous statement as NUmad is the only site that openly mocks the SPL. He says he lives in Newcastle and I was wondering what the general consensus about the SPL is in the toon.

  11. I can’t stand the fact Celtic & Rangers are religious clubs. Pathetic really! 👿

  12. Richie – I can fully appreciate that like, the level of debt the Manc clubs are in stinks in my opinion so I get why the clubs have voted that way. I suppose it’s like in every walk of life, the people who cause the destruction never really pay. A handful of ******* in suits like politicians, bankers and boards of directors walk away scot free while the majority are left to suffer and pick up the pieces.

Andy – I wouldn’t passionately slag the SPL off, but I certainly don’t rate it all that highly. Celtic would be a mid table EPL team and the rest would be struggling to make the championship play offs (excluding Rangers, as I don’t know what their team would be next season)

  19. Danish Press suggests that John Guedetti Will go to Lazio.
The agent confirms that there is interest from both sides.
John Guedetti is only interested in a move that Will Secure him first team football.

I don’t see Newcastle Can match that request if we keep Ba.

  21. Good article Toonsy, but I think you’re mistaken when you say that Fergie, Sammy and Tavernier would need to be included in the 25 man squad the season after next.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this under 21 rule. It doesn’t actually say that a player has to be under 21 on 1st Jan in the relevant year. It says that a player who is 21 or under on that date need not be registered. In other words, the player needs to be under 22, not under 21.

Take Santon for example. He was born on 2nd Jan 1991, so on 1st Jan this year he was still only 20 (he didn’t turn 21 until the next day). He will therefore definitely qualify as an under 21 player for this coming season, and because he will still only be 21 on Ist Jan next year, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t need to be registered for the 2013-14 season either.

Fergie and Tavernier were both born in the same year as Santon (July ’91 and Oct 91 respectively) and so would need to be first registered in the same season as him. Sammy is a year younger (born May ’92) so he wouldn’t need to be registered until a year later. He will still be 21 on 1st January 2014 so I think he would still qualify as an under 21 for the 2014-15 season.

So to summarise, it looks to me like:

    1) None of these players would need to be registered for this coming season OR the 2013-14 season

    2) Santon, Fergie and Tavernier wouldn’t need to be registered until the 2014-15 season

    3) Sammy wouldn’t need to be registered until the 2015-16
    season

But I could be wrong 😯

It looks JJ absolutely hung you out to dry. 😛

JJ, Mind, I agree, you shouldn’t try and use my name, you haven’t got the charisma to pull it off. 😛

Feel free Aussie to fill your boots. I’m cycling to work in 5 mins.
I will be checking later tho. 😎

  23. I had no reason to believe it wasn’t you Troy so why was I hung out to dry 😯 .. I can borrow any user name on here and do the same thing.. it is not clever, more underhanded… It was your user name taken so if you don’t have a problem then neither do I. 😕

  24. Chris G… I have to disagree, as far as I know the rule says “”An Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences” no mention of “21 or under” as far as I can find…apologies if wrong 😕

    Have we signed anyone yet?

…I’m not arsed about that Debuchy to be honest, he seems OK as a right winger but I’m not convinced about fullback. I still think we need a couple of defenders. As usual I think we’ll sign some fker neebody’s hord of.

  26. Rodz….we knew that, “early hours Rodz” is far more intelligent and has a better taste in music than you 😉 😆

  27. …looking forward to Marveaux returning anyway (not too arsed about Obertan). I think he’ll give us a whole new attacking option. He’s the only decent natural winger we have IMO (I still think Jonas is a RB).

Not sure about all the strikers we’re being linked with lately. Truth is, it’s impossible for us to speculate accurately really, as none of us know who’s staying and who’s off. I guess at a minimum, we could do with a CB who can play FB and a CF if everyone stays. Actually make that a CM too, now that we’ve lost Gypsy Wedding boy.

Reet, I’m off to CAB to try and sort oot a moontin of *****…..
