£16m double swoop for Douglas and de Jong?

Doing a deal for de Jong?
It would seem that Newcastle have sent a delegation over to the Netherlands with the aim of sealing a deal for FC Twente pair Luuk de Jong and Douglas.

And if you believe what the Mirror has to say on the matter it would also appear that NUFC have been quoted a price of £16m for the pair, which I think isn’t a bad deal.

Of course it’s easy for me to say that as it isn’t my money, but these are two players we’ve supposedly been looking at for a while and it would help sort out two positions for us that need strengthening in terms of attack and defence.

However FC Twente boss Steve McClaren insists that it would take a “silly money” offer for his star striker to move clubs this summer.

“Every player has his price. Luuk de Jong is a fantastic forward, but he is only 21 years old and it would be better that he has one more season in Holland before he moves to the Premier League,” said McClaren.

“We have already sold a forward to balance the books. There is no financial pressure for us to sell.”

Unfortunately McClaren said much the same thing before Edin Dzeko left Wolfsburg for Manchester City which kind of shows how much sway a manager has. Sure he may want to keep de Jong, but money talks in the boardroom and at the moment we have our representatives in their boardroom. Allegedly…

More speculation or signs of action? Who knows, time will tell all I guess, but for now we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with regard to the whole de Jong/Douglas situation although it’s well worth pointing out that the transfer window is now officially open!

What do you make of it all?

  1. Wally actually said “if it was up to him” it would take silly money, which indicates it isn’t up to him….time will tell if we get them…hopefully something will happen tomorrow….not that I’m impatient or owt 👿 😆

  2. Hope it is true, to contradict Wally as Richie has, 16 mill for the two is not a bad price,we will just have to wait and see. 😉

  3. Oh man….gorging myself on my new toon DVD highlights from the 2011 / 2012 season….we scored some cracking goals… 😯 😯

  4. Richietoon, you’re up early mate, or haven’t you been to bed yet ? 😉 😉

  5. Wo is de Jong so young…..looks like we’ll have to pay the big bucks, based on his potential alone. But if the lad scored so many goals in his debut season at such a young age he must have something about him…

I know nowt about Douglas, but 4 mill isn’t a lot these days….

  6. I hope we get these 2 …. + debuechy and I’ll be happy!!!… Amalfitano , sylvain, mehdi , vuckic, ferguson should be pushing for 1st team place

  7. Looks like Douglas is on his way. Seems to split opinion but i trust pards and carrs judgement, Im still stunned the fat man is offering £15m for players that probably wont get into our current first 11… 😯

  8. Well, the figures/ press are wrong somewhere as if we have been told its 16 million for the pair and they say we have sealed Douglas for 5 million.. other reports say we have had 12 million quid turned down for de jong. well 5+12 =17 so the 16 miilion for the pair does not add up. One thing is for sure though, we are very close on the figures and you would think we can get a deal done if both sides give as little as a million each to meet in the middle.
I think Ba is gonna go anyway and that de Jong will be our number 1 with Cisse. And with best going for 3 million which will be the case and Ba @ 7.5 million, thats 10.5 million for De Jongs outlay recouped in an instant. With Best and Loven and Ba gone though and only De Jong in, we are still down two strikers. Thats if Ba does leave. If Ba stays we will have upped our quality in De Jong but decreased our squad size.
We needed the other centre half as its a long season.. even longer now and Staylor is never gonna make it through a whole season without falling appart.
its all bubbling away quite nicely.

  9. Just what we need, a 12 foot centre half who takes no prisoners. Get him in…

I remember watching Samba at Hertha Berlin years ago and he was useless…he developed intoone of the better EPL centre halves….no reason why Douglas cannot develop too…

  10. Craig, spot on… hope De Jong comes in cos he has great potential… Although I love Demba Ba, swapping a 27 year old with “knackered knees” for a 21 year old cloggs starlet sounds like a good deal… Get wor Timmy to give the lad a ring and convince him once and for all that the toon is the place to be…NUFC are going places…. Howay the lads…!!

  11. Well, its reported that Monechengladbach have signed De Jong on a four year deal of 9 million quid, so thats that one gone lol.. We were either never going over for him in the first place or we never bid as high as that.
    Or
Its all bollocks in the kraut press to, just like ours?

      (Quote)

  12. People keep forgetting that Ba’s team get 50% of any fee agreed,so it’s likely we will get around 3.5million for his transfer

      (Quote)

  13. Whatever happened to the Erik Pieters deal? Wasn’t that a dead cert a few months back?

      (Quote)

  14. We need 3 defenders, 2 attackers, another Cabaye and a wide man, that should see us through till January.

      (Quote)

  15. Surely with £16 million quid we could clone James Perch and have cover for every position!

  16. #wise PPL say , until there at ST James’ Park, with a black n white shirt, it all Bollocks and speculation, local rags the worst of all 👿
I would love to be surprised 😉

  17. I think £16m for De Jong and Douglas is a very fair price for these players, considering the cash will be paid upfront. I think that Twente have already replaced Douglas in Jan so in terms of replacements, £16m should cover De Jong with plenty of change left over.
I am quite confident that these 2 players will be wearing black and White before long.

Debuchy may be more complicated, but the fact he wants to leave is certainly to our favour. I’m not sure if we have gone in with a 2nd bid but I hope we go about this one in the right way and not **** Lille off, having already nicked Cabaye off them.

Hoillett, I think only if Ba leaves.

But what kinda of summer transfer window would it be for us if we sign Debuchy, Douglas, Good, Amalfitano, Hiollett and De Jong.

That would certainly that would be an improved team/squad on last season IMO

  18. Craig @17 – I think this is the original article which kicked off the De Jong – Monchengladbach story. It mentions the 4 year deal and a fee of 11 million euros which converts to the 9m quid that you mentioned. Basically, using google translate, I’m getting that they’ve reached a final agreement but it’s awaiting official confirmation:
    http://www.express.de/moenchengladbach/vierjahresvertrag–luuk-de-jong-wird-der-neue-fohlen-reus,3286,16503548.html

Interestingly, the article is dated the 28th June – last Thursday, which is the day before Llambias and Charnley are alleged to have travelled over there. If they really did go there (and it wasn’t a smokescreen) I suppose it’s possible that they got wind of this story sometime on Thursday and went over the next day to try and hijack the deal. For the time being, however, I’m taking everything with a large pinch of salt – including this latest story that we’ve signed Douglas.

  19. Good news if true. Mind you, I’m pretty amazed we’ve had a running commentary from the media for the last few months on us signing these two. We usually do our business secretively and the press rarely catch up until the deals are done. Call me a cynic, but I’m not convinced.

Also, I’m aware of De Jong’s goal record, 1 every 2 or thereabouts, but it seems like a bit of a gamble paying an 8 figure sum for a 21yr who’s never played outside the Dutch league. Fair enough he could turn out to be the next van Nistelrooy of the PL, but the latter had a fair bit more game time under his belt before commanding such a high fee. I dunno.

…haha, I see someone has been sabotaging Wikipedia again. On De Jong:

…..”His favourite player was Alan Jewels, who played briefly for Whitley Bay Boys club in the mid 90’s.”

      (Quote)

  20. Douglas ,Not sure about him at all ,worry about that temper ,god knows there would be enough provocation in the PL to set him off .Don’t want anyone upsetting the balance we have, all the same if he comes I will hope to be proved wrong.

      (Quote)

  21. I don’t know much about either player to be honest, but have complete faith in the club to get the right players.

      (Quote)

  22. Kim, his temperament doesn’t bother me one jot. A 6ft 4in commanding, hard ******* of a central defender sounds alreet to me. As far as I know he was involved in an isolated incident a year and a half ago, where he hoyed a bit of a tantrum. He doesn’t seem like another Joey Barton to me. Some of our Dutch friends on here may have seen more of him and prove me wrong, but I don’t see his attitude as being a problem.

…it’s probably all bullshine anyway! 😮

      (Quote)

  23. ahh, sorry, totally off-topic (unlike me) but I’ve got a bit of a dilemma today. Be interested to see what any of the gamblers, (or non-gamblers) out there might do, and granda Bats if he’s aboot.

Basically, I stuck £30 on Spain at 11/4 at the beginning of the tournament.

As it stands, if Spain win tonight I’ll be £82.50 better off, and get my £30 stake back. I’m already about £80 up from the tournament.

However, Italy are currently 13/8 to lift the trophy. Should I cover my **** and stick some money on them?

I could be guaranteed £62.50 for Spain, or £32.50 for the Eye-ties if I stuck a £20 bet on Italy. So I’d forfeit 20 quid of potential Spain winnings to get my Spain stake back (and a pint) if Spain lose.

OR, I could hoy £31.50 on Italy and be guaranteed a £51 win either way.

Problem I’ve got is I still fancy Spain. Really tempted to not bother with the ‘insurance’ bet and go all out for Spain. 😕

    Answers on a proverbial postcard… 😎

  24. Cheers Ice, yeah must admit I’m leaning towards the £20 on Spain. That way I’m still wanting them to win and sticking with my original bet.

  25. Kim – I can understand your concerns about Douglas like. I look at which nationalities have done well in the league – the likes of the French, Dutch, Argentines and others have done well, so fancy De Jong to be able to adapt.
Not too many Brazilians have been brilliant in the league.
However, as Rod said, the lad certainly has the build and statue to cope with the demands of the league, and the lad would have an excellent mentor in Coloccini and I’m sure Taylor would help him settle in. I suppose, as in most cases, it’s up to the player himself. Pardew seems to have been able to get into Ben Arfas head and improved his attitude (for Newcastle anyway), so perhaps he could do the same with Dougie.

      (Quote)

  26. Rod ,I fancy Italy to win ,just cause they came so close to not competing due to the match fixing stuff back home. Also there is a certain irony that a team made up from a corrupt league could win a competion run by even more corrupt regime.. 😉 If it were me I would do the happy medium with the £31.50 bet. 😀

      (Quote)

  27. Thanks Richie 🙄 😆 …I usually back winners e/w but I couldn’t afford the 60quid at the beginning of the tournament.

      (Quote)

  28. Ta Kim. Yeah I must admit they played better out of the two teams in the semis, I think Spain have more quality but it just depends how they set their team/formation out.

    Hhmmm, decisions decisions………

  29. FSOTC welcome back mate, aye seen that link, was hopeing you came back with good news 😆

      (Quote)

  30. eyup FSOTC, yeah seen those links mate. I think if it gets to a tug of war Borussia Monchengladbach would have the edge as far as the player is concerned, as they offer CL football, and possibly higher wages, but as far as the board/club goes we should have the edge with the cold, hard cash approach…

      (Quote)

  31. Rod – here comes captain sensible 🙄

My grandad used to bet big on the horses. He always used to say that if you’re going to gamble you have to be prepared to loose!. Needless to say he didn’t die a wealthy man.
None of this edging ya bets *****, or each way bollocks mate.
If you’ve got £20 to bet, stick 4 £5 bets on a scoreline bet with better odds, keeps it interesting and if you loose – **** it, there’s always next time 😉

  33. Sorry, Ice. Bearer of bad news and all. Doesn’t look good for us & De Jong then, Chris. I’ve never seen the kid play anyway, so can’t really say I’m upset one way or t’other.

  34. Sharpy, yeah my grandad used to be a big gambler on the nags too. Used to **** all his pay up the wall and at the bookies. I think I’m generally the super cautious type though. Cheers for your viewpoint, but the 20quid is only really ‘available’ as insurance. I see what you’re saying though and I’ll look into some odds. Reet, I’ve had 3 (sensible) responses now and they all follow the 3 available options – insurance, happy medium and go-for-broke(ish). I’ll leave the thread to follow its natural course now.

…after I add that Cesare Prandelli is the spit of Kenneth Connor (Carry On films).

Looks like there has been some actual transfer activity going on. Have to say I’d be quite pleased wirh Douglass, Debuchy and Hoilett. Too bad for De Jong but the club sounds like it made an attempt but aren’t going to over pay which is sound strategy.

Still need a striker though. Any thoughts on who our second target is? Haven’t heard much on the swedish lad in a few days

Lucio on his way from Inter to Juventus though….

  42. FSOTC- it’s comes form journo claiming he just met with Reading but that “he is more likely to join newcastle” or something to that effect. People have sort of run with it but it is believable to me- he’s on a free (I think), is young, and we were linked with him over the past 2 windows.
