Game on! Newcastle v Atromitos

In with a chance thanks to Taylor
Tonight we will find out if we manage to make the Europa League proper as we face Atromitos in the second leg of our third round Europa League qualifying tie.

With the scores level at 1-1 it would be fair to assume that Newcastle have the advantage after grabbing that vital away goal in Athens last week, but we’ve been here before remember so forgive me if I put the champagne on ice for a while longer.

We’re actually on the box tonight which is great for fans who can’t go. I’m holed up in Belgium right now so a trip to St James’ Park is way out of the question for me, but if you can go then why not get yourselves down there? The tickets are cheap and are still available right up until kick-off so you still have a bit of time to get there providing you live locally of course!

I won’t waffle on too much as there isn’t really much need to. You’ve most probably read the preview, or at least another preview, and I assume most of you are au fait with the relevant injury and suspension news? Team news will of course be published below as and when it becomes available.

As mentioned earlier, the game is on TV, on ITV4 to be precise, but if you can’t get it through your TV for whatever reason or you don’t like in the UK,then why not throw a few streams into the comments section below in an effort to help out fellow NUFC fans?

Howay the lads!

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Ryan Taylor, James Perch, Gael Bigirimana, Gabriel Obertan, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Demba Ba.

Subs: Steve Harper, James Tavernier, Yohan Cabaye, Haris Vuckic, Adam Campbell, Romain Amalfitano, Papiss Cisse.

  1. I see Rodz & Troy were Suspect Devicing and Small Axing last night. Good ****. Lord, I haven’t heard that Stiff Little Fingers rekkid for a while. I shall wheel that sonumbitch out and pester the missus with it shortly.

Trumpet–it was rule #1: A new manger wastes money on transfers; don’t let him.

How about Mark Hughes? Guess he’s not a fan of that book.

  2. There is chance for us to progress after group stage. One of the easiest groups. 😳 😆

  3. Wow! Get your beach towels, boys & girls! Madeira!

    Wikipedia says:

The name Funchal, was applied by the first settlers that landed on its shores due to the abundance of wild fennel where, as tradition goes, the primitive burg was built. From the Portuguese word “funcho” (fennel) and the suffix “-al”, to denote “a plantation of fennel”:

“…Funchal, to whom the captain gave this name, because it was founded in a beautiful forested valley, full of fennel up to the sea…”

  4. Wow ! Great draw. Well happy with that.
Now just to bring in some reinforcements. 😳

  5. Afternoon all, Rossco@307 ,Mikes obviously told him to **** off when he’s gone begging for a replacement for Raylor. 👿 And no CB or FWD or FB that are all needed. Total ,total bullshit from the start to finish of this window, the strengthening going on by all our nearest rivals is quite something .That we are happy to stand still and not even fork out £6 or 7m on one defender for a top 6 team is disgusting imo. Really ,really pissed off now ,AND I got toothache after half hour in the dentist chair with a sadist for a dentist 👿.

  6. I’m very disappointed with this transfer window, I expected the club to add more strength and depth to the squad.

In reality that hasn’t happened, I’m usually quite positive about our prospects throughout the season. I wouldn’t call myself a negative fan but this window has made me reconsider where we will finish this season.

I only hope that the targets we are going for at the moment are not available in this transfer window but in the January one. What happens when Ba, Tiote and Cisse leave for the African Cup of Nations? Who do we call on to lead our front line?

Very disappointed with how this transfer window has panned out, if we get any significant injuries then we may not better the position that we finished in last season.

#nufc transfer activity is over for this window. They’ll “look at it again in January” says Pardew

      (Quote)

  8. Zoe, We just have to pray that Ivory Coast knock out Senegal in the Qualifiers and we only lose Tiote but it’s a reckless gamble by the owner yet again ,as is not strengthening the team .

      (Quote)

  9. And WTF does look at it again in january mean . It means just that ,have a look but won’t buy just slap in silly bids 👿

      (Quote)

  10. Kim, I hope that happens at least that way we would still have our strike force in tact.

I’m struggling to understand why MA hasn’t invested the only thing I can think is that he’s said to Pardew that he has to do with what he has got until the January transfer window and then assess if they need players.

That’s the only thing that I can think of.

I don’t get your question. Explain?

  12. Anyone think Ashley could be looking to sell us? Would make sense why he wouldn’t want to spend his own cash. We’re an attractive club to buy now, unlike last time he tried to sell us.

  13. Well a lot us have called on the club to play the youth more and they will get their chance now. Let’s see what they’ve got…

Hell of a draw by the way. Might be worrth a trie

  14. MDS-Ayup, the one positive I suppose. Plenty of games to blood in the youngsters. One first team CB in and I’d have been ecstatic with the window, as it is i’m just pissy. The youngsters we have can all be blooded in in positions where we have some semi decent cover, the positions we don’t have cover-striker and CB is where we rely on and 18 year old and a 19 year old 😕 Still, great opportunity for Campbell if he can keep impressing with the ressies, he’ll probably be on the bench soon enough 😕

Pards has just stated we won’t be bringing anyone in today and is hoping no one goes out.

    Uh oh. 😯

      (Quote)

  16. Troy, It’s exactly gone as I expected this window , I knew he wouldn’t spend much if anything , it’s embarressing that we havn’t strengthend .Even skint Everton have just made another signing and will be strong competition for us.
It’s all very well waiting for January but how much damage can be done between now and then when we are fighting on 4 fronts with injury’s already setting in . Rossco could be right about him selling up soon.

      (Quote)

  17. Axel ,Woudn’t surprise me ,he must be really hacked off with the fact he and the squad worked so hard to get in the top 6 only to see little to no reward.

      (Quote)

  18. Vernon Troy – You were harping on about the Carroll cash. I was saying it had been spent; Mikey and lame duck aren’t going to borrow to spend big; get over it. You were saying its still there; you were pointing to possible bids for Carroll, Douglas, Debuchy etc. to make up your budget of £25 to £30M. If I could be bothered to go back and check your comments I would, but I’ll leave that to you to put me right.

      (Quote)

  19. I would be suprised if he did walk out but he doesn’t look happy at the moment. He must have gone to Mike last night said we need to bring someone in and he’s said no. Are we really suppose to believe that we are the only club in the league with no money

    £3 million what a joke

      (Quote)

  20. Can’t see Pards walking out, this is still as big a club as he will probably ever manage, even if he’s not been backed this window I can’t really see him throwing a hissy fit, he knew what he was getting into when he joined us and he’s only had one good season.

I’d be angry at him if he did leave (as well as the board obvs) because what happened is hardly surprising to me, or many other fans I suppose, so it shouldn’t be surprising to him…

      (Quote)

  21. Were we not saying the same thing that Pardew was unhappy last year when we didnt land a striker? I think Pardew knows the score when it comes to our transfer dealings and is willing to work with the board. We still have a very good atrting 11 and imo the squad is stronger ( not by much I admit ) , regardless if we spend £3 , £3 million or £30 million I feel the club is still progressing and moving forward.

    @Bumbling Boris

I came to the conclusion in the Fox & Hounds that you’ve totally lost the plot so the Carroll issue is a non starter. 😉

      (Quote)

  24. Its the best job Pards has ever had or is ever likely to have. He won’t walk unless he has made promises to players about the club’s ambition, and is now left with no credibility. I wouldn’t put it past him on this score mind, because he has a record of coming out with injudicious comments.

      (Quote)

  25. johno kna dont think the squad is stronger ide say abit weaker ,pluss injurys mounting up already ,guthrie played well last season ,anita was brough to replace cabaye or tiote ,best better than cambell at this moment in time .

      (Quote)

  26. Harry Redknapp spotted at a McDonalds drive through! Sources say he just wanted someone to talk to from his car window. 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  27. Newkie. I agree. A CB that could cover at lb would have made for a great window. Now I think we are better in midfield but the same elsewhere

      (Quote)

  28. I still believe they are waiting for eric pieters to prove his fitness and will be a january signing, he’ll be the left/cb cover.

All we have to do is hope we get to January now with out major injurys in those positions

      (Quote)

  29. KK@344 😆

All over twitter £8m plus player for Cabaye /Arsenal!, be glad when the window shuts.

      (Quote)

  30. total lack of ambition!

This is gonna be a tough season and i really hope we can survive.

I rather sell cabaye for 20 and invest in 2-3 players right now…
Hope the fans rattles the cage and shows some form of dissapointment at home games

  31. Reports hre in Holland say Huntelaar beeen sighted at Liverpool airpoort so alll our rivals for the european places are strengethening big time and we have to make do with a squad that is already stretched to breaking point. effing brilliant

      (Quote)

  32. KKF @348

Nope certainly not mate, had hoped for Carroll coming back but again I never expected Ashley to buy another striker.

It’s the lack of Defensive cover that we badly need that I expected to be addressed this summer, considering last January we pulled out of getting that guy from Watford on the assumption that better player will be available in the summer.

Disappointed by the lack of signings at the back or strikers? you bet. Surprised? Not one bit

      (Quote)

  33. Axel ,Think we gonna be hearing a lot of told you so’s from rival fans this year if we fail to make top 6 or 8 even. 👿

      (Quote)

  34. Maybe Ashley couldn’t afford any more players because he just bought the world’s supply of strawberry syrup. Rumours were that we ran out by Feb last season hence Ba’s terrible run of form, luckily we were bailed out by Cisse who had his own personal stock for the remainder of the season but he was unwilling to share it with Ba.

With enough Syrup both players will remain injury free and revert back to top scoring form and it also has the chance to turn players like Williamson into the Sol Campbell of Yore.

    Yep, i’ve cracked. **** it 😎

      (Quote)

  35. Any chance of a new article up?
Too many comments on this one for me to access on my iPhone, I can post this but it doesnt let me in to read the crack everyone is posting. Just kicks me out everytime I try to get in …. Go on man, please… It’s deadline day and we have our Europa group games so there must be a new article in there somewhere 😉

      (Quote)

  36. Ashley was too busy planning to buy into Rangers to bother with the club he owns and should have more ambition for. We’re just not prepared for what’s coming. Injuries and ACoN could put a huge dent in our finishing place. Lots of good young lads in the squad now but no depth across the back 4. No depth at striker either. Why no replacement for Best and Peter?

      (Quote)

  37. Well that’s that – It certainly looks to me that we have had to sell Forster, Loven and Besty to buy Anita?

    Sound bad? It is bad.

Was it really worth it? 😕

I’m not so sure…. Loven and Best would of been decent for nights like last night if we were never replacing them.

      (Quote)

  38. And finally…..

Pardew saying his priority was to keep the players we have….

They’ll be as unhappy as us now in my opinion. I mean I can think of Krul, Colo, Cabaye, Cisse all saying at least once through the summer ‘we need a couple of players’.

Our players deserved a little bit of help from Fatty

      (Quote)

  39. If we were going to sell 2 strikers to get the cash to buy a player why not buy a striker? Has Xisco suddenly turned into the second coming of Messi? What is this love affair with midfielders? Surely we are going to have to loan a few of them out so how does that strengthen the team for extra games? Seven out, four in what is the reasoning here? How can we hang on to fifth with this kind of performance from Ashley/LLambias?

      (Quote)

  40. Sorry we actually only sold one striker but also a decent goalkeeper and let Peter go for free. Just don’t understand the thinking here. Was thinking actually involved? Maybe Llambias forgot to turn up the day the board discussed the lack of striker cover? Many more questions go unanswered. If we sit 8th at Christmas perhaps the owner should look at his managing director and ask him what the plan was?

      (Quote)

  41. If Demba/Cissé(good chance) and Shola(notoriously injury-prone) gets injured we are screwed, we’ll have to rely on one senior professional striker and Campbell 😕 .

      (Quote)

  42. I don’t get the need for more strikers! We have 3 for 1 spot, should be fine till january.
I Think the 2 biggest needs we have are a left winger (one a’la ben arfa, right footed, so they can swap during games) and a right or left back, who is good both defensive and attacking.
That will strengthen the 1’st eleven and not just the dept.

Then we should Line up like this:
    Krul
New RB/santon staylor colo santon/new LB
    Anita tiote
    Cabaye
    Ben arfa Ba/Cisse new LW

      (Quote)

  43. Well I take it we haven’t brought anyone in yet 🙄 ah well still plenty of time left for Jabba to buy that good player that Lambastad was saying we would get each yr for selling the name of the ground 😯 oh thats right we haven’t got any money for it as SD gets it for free 😳 .
Wll I still think Jabba will save us because he knows we’re weakened and we have extra games this season so he must have more ambition than that surely

      (Quote)

  44. Vernon Troy – Explain your point about the Carrol cash being there and the potential signings of Carroll, Douglas, Debuchy etc that you were pointing to in support of whatever point you were making? You know the £25 to £30M that you said was there. What was your point? 😐 ❓

      (Quote)

  45. DAVE come on now you know how much batty charged jabba for taking his signs down and back up for the games, the mans not made of money 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  46. luke edwards says the club have confirmed no ins or outs ,that must meen were selling some 1 then 😉
