Game On! Club Brugge v Newcastle

Game On in Belgium
Newcastle prepare to do battle in Belgium this evening knowing full well that a win at the Jan Breydel Stadium will ensure qualification through to the knockout stages of the competition.

We will of course be boosted by a sizeable presence from our own fans, both inside the ground and in the centre of Brugge itself.

This follows some rather harsh words from the Belgian police pretty much threatening fans who are in and around the ground without match tickets with arrest. However from my experience of them they just sit around not doing a lot. In Brussels there has been a police van parked on the corner of the financial district since April. It’s never moved and I’ve never seen anyone in it which just about sums them up for me!

Those harsh words have since been diluted and it would appear that the Belgian authorities have relaxed their stance and have decided to be rather more pro-active in their approach to us. This includes setting up a kind of fan park in the centre of Brugge, complete with big sreen, so fans without tickets can enjoy the match and a bit of atmosphere. I dare say it’s also viewed that having everyone in one place is much easier to handle, a bit like the pub in Shameless if you like. If you’re interested you can see what fans in the Market Square are up to by clicking here.

In terms of the game itself, the match preview is situated here if you haven’t already taken a look at it, or if you just want to see what people are saying ahead of the game tonight.

It is an early start at 6pm UK time, but it is also live on ESPN for those who aren’t travelling to the match or watching in a pub. If you haven’t got ESPN then don’t worry as it is also being broadcast on numerous overseas channels so finding a stream shouldn’t be too much of a big deal. As always though, if you happen to find a good one, or one that just plain works, then please feel free to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news, as ever, will be added below as and when it become available.

  1. Interesting line up and will be fun to see how we do with so many attacking minded players in the midfield. Sammy, Oba and Marv should all be pushing for Jonas spot in the first team. Cisse needs some time on the pitch to win some fans back and earn himself some game time and I think he could flourish in this formation.

  2. Watching the Liverpool game at the moment.

    1 – It’s boring as fook.

2 – It’s like watching a game on Football Manager as the camera is so far away 😆

  3. Charlie, that’s a good point about Cisse. In this, he would be expected to just get around for goal scoring opportunities, while the other 3 can provide the creativity

  4. Can u imagine if Demba had Ben Arfa, Cabaye, and one of these three or Fergie backing him up in this formation? Killer!

Let’s hope we don’t find out.

  6. Toonsy @1 ,I agree ,we should try it .

Don’t know how much of this game I will be able to watch as it’s clashing with seeing to lew and stuff 🙄 . May record it to watch properly later ,will most likely only get to watch first half properly 🙁 Anyway hopefully a win and get qualification out the way. HWTL.

  7. Yeah, this match has to be one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Liverpool can have all the “passing” football they want. Give me incisive, attacking football any day.

  8. Debating or not whether to head to the pub, if the streams are as gash as they’ve been in the last two matches I might have to… 😕 😕

  9. We did try 4-2-3-1 against Everton in the first half and got pounded. We haven’t tried it since because that would mean moving Ba away from the goal with an off form Cisse misfiring most of our chances, or moving Cisse away from goal where he can’t really do anything-imo.

“Let’s hope we don’t find out.”

Why not? With our first team players in it we might actually create something for our strikers and play a bit more football?

  11. Toonsy…Does Ballerfan not mean “hope we don’t find out” as in if we got beat tonight then we’d have found out why we don’t play it in the prem? 😉

  12. As long as we don’t concede any more ,we should be more than capable of getting a couple of goals.

  13. Not going to mince my words – Pardew you are in cloud cuckoo land if you think this is the future, get RID of the **** that think they are footballers, they are overpaid so and so’s, and the lads & lasses on this blog have to work for their money not like your lot with over-hyped egos, lead by yourselve.

  14. Kim – Whether they are impressing the new manager or not, it doesn’t change the fact that both goals were **** poor from our point of view and should have been dealt with a lot better.
