So we lost out on Loic Remy and after spending much time and probably a lot of effort in trying to lure the Frenchman to St James’ Park the former Marseille man opted to join QPR instead.

Did we dodge a bullet? Well the fact that Remy’s mind was swayed by a wad of extra notes would suggest so. Likewise would the rumours that he just fancied staying in bed a bit longer rather than meeting with NUFC officials but ultimately time will tell.

Personally I’m over it. Move on to the next one, and quickly. However there is one thing that came out of Remy’s move to QPR that has made me wonder about our transfer policy and the continued success of it. Is it possible that we’ve been outdone by our own shrewdness in the transfer market? Are we now at a point where things need to be done differently to avoid the same situation happening again?

Now not for one minute am I suggesting we should have suddenly matched what QPR offered Loic Remy to try and get him to sign on with us. It would be stupidity to lay out that much in wages and make a player who has barely hit top form in a few seasons and is untested in the Premier League one of our highest earners right from the word go. However I refer you to words from Harry Redknapp when he revealed that the deal was all but done between QPR and Remy.

“Newcastle United wanted him and Graham Carr doesn’t make too many mistakes. Graham’s got good judgement.”

And there, for me anyway, is part of the problem. We have a Chief Scout who seems to be widely respected within the game who has done a cracking job in alerting us to some quality players over the past few seasons. It’s pretty clear his niche or preference is in the French market as that is where we seem to look for most of our business and it’s worked when you look at some of the players we’ve managed to pick up that would have cost a lot more with a little less knowledge. I’m talking players like Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse as examples.

It’s not impossible that the work he has put in for United has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. As Redknapp says, Carr doesn’t get much wrong when it comes to rating players so is it not possible that as soon as other clubs become aware of our interest they suddenly crank up their own relatively safe in the knowledge that if we’re interested then it’s probably worth them being interested also?

Of course this is where we hit the buffers with our transfer policy and the steadfast refusal to deviate from a strict wage structure that has been put in place. We find a player, put the legwork in, scout them, watch them and then, when the time is right, we bid for them and usually get along the line of signing them before another club pops up that will offer more money or perhaps more incentive, such as Champions League football or something like that meaning that ultimately we lose out.

For our transfer policy to work there needs to be secrecy, but the problem is that the secrecy has been blown by our success. Clubs are basically not scouting players, they are scouting our scouts and taking action on it. I’ve mentioned Remy in this article but he isn’t the best example as it’s well documented that Harry Redknapp wanted him at Tottenham, but is it not possible that our actions alerted QPR to the availability of the player?

We need to get back to how it was a few seasons ago. Suddenly the press have a pretty good grasp of our targets and actually get more right than they have done for a while, but these leaks need to stop if we are to see more Ben Arfa’s and Cabaye’s turn up at St James’ Park.

And they need to stop soon!

Dont get the love for graham he aint the pacy striker we need.
He may be a slight upgrade on ameobi but he isnt that good

  2. The only reason Remy got so public was marseilles chairman gobbing off to the press, Bartons tweeting and QPRs constant media whoring

Cisse came out of the blue, Debuchy finally happening relatively out of the blue after all the carry on in the summer stopped, I kept read that he wouldnt leave lille in january and low and behold.

I could see the press being miles off with their laughable bullshit (David Ngog this morning 😆 ) and us having a couple they havent mentioned in the pipeline…

      (Quote)

  3. the Remy ‘interest’ was made public for a reason – to attract bids/suitors

from the point of view of Marseilles, Remy’s agent/s and Mr Remy himself – job done

the ‘interest’ in Haidara could follow a similar pattern…

      (Quote)

  4. i dont know really.. the main thing is the player wanting to come i think… good examples are Debuchy.. he was adamant he wanted to come so he came in the end. Then we have ones like Remy who wants to go to highest pay deal, and thats where he went in the end. Then there is this lad we have just had a bid accepted with Nice for today.. he has openly came out today and said he much prefers italy over newcastle… so that means he will come to us as a last resort. So, for me, the deciding factor is the player himself. Not cloak and dagger secret stuff. When a player is available all clubs will be given flies on that guy.. they wont just tell one club. The presscrap comes into play when the players agent starts his games, pumping the player up etc. that does not tend to happen too much with top draw players as those guys know what they want and where they want to go. its this bracket we fall into … the 2 million to 8 million range… its not enough to get an elite player so all guys we go for will have money in mind alot.

      (Quote)

  5. Yeah i don’t think our game has changed more that interest is leaked from clubs or agents, nowt new there

  6. Think thats a very fair and valid point toonsy. If you dont continuly adapt in business ( and the transfer market is a business ) you will get out done byt someone who can do it better. Look at HMV. They were market leaders for so long, the market changed , HMV didnt and went bust. We may have the right princaples but no harm in tweeking it every now and again to suit an ever changing market.

  7. Big papa – I dont get the point of that post? 😕

Remy is history now lets get someone else in.
Lukuku is surely the pacey powerful player pards is after? 😀

  8. Just wanted to have my say on this lad……absolutely bang average!!!!!

Looking at the last thread on here, and the #nufc handle on twitter there is a lot of love for this guy from toon fans.

    Why?

Would hate to see this lad in a Newcastle shirt given the players we have and the type of player we need. DG is average at everything which is why he isnt good enough, no pace, no great touch or control, not really strong and imposing and not really good at linking up. People look at a goal record and wet themselves if it’s a 2in1 record. Well we have just had 2 out and out goalscorers and that didnt work at all, 2 goalscorers who were like Graham just better and didnt work. We need a pacey forward that can stretch teams and has the skill to be able to play wide and link up like a Welbeck/Sturridge or a Second Striker type player.

I cant inderstand the love for him 😯 😯
I think a lot of it just boils down to us not wanting the Mackems to get him!

Players who might be available: Mertens/Payet/Erdinc/N’zogbia/Zaha/Ince/Gouffran/Redmond and Belhanda.

Lot of talk about Aspas aswell, might be ambitious but I would try for one of them.

Anyone off that list would walk straight into our team, the last thing we need is another poacher/finisher type like Danny Graham.

I dont see how we will play better with him in our team.

      (Quote)

  9. Big papa – I concur! 😆 😆

your right though he is a geordie so he will always be favoured but we need a player who is anything but graham!

Out of your list the most realistic option for me would be to get redmond and gouffran. Redmond is young and will give us bags of pace and desire (take note sameobi) and gouffran can be our HBA on the other wing 😉

      (Quote)

  10. What I can’t understand is that we were in a big rush to get players in as we need them asap.
So Pards and Lambastad meets Remy on sunday in london and think they have him, but know that QPR were interested in him so why not get him straight to the club to seal the deal. Why wait and arrange for him to come down to the lub on tuesday ? Which gave QPR time to get to him and turn his head. I just can’t understand why they didn’t get it sorted straight away.

      (Quote)

  11. Remy said of the QPR chairman, “We just played a game of FIFA – it was good and showed to me what a good person Tony is. “He showed his human side to me as an owner of the club I wanted to join. It was a special moment for us both.”
Our owners, of course, haven’t got a human side, at least not a friendly one. According to Pardew, “I’m confident I have an aggressive board.
I don’t do the contracts. My part in the Rémy deal was very much just comforting the player in terms of coming into what would be a strange city for him.” A strange city! I hope he didn’t tell Remy it’s a strange city when he arranged for him to fly up and see it. No wonder he stayed in bed. Try “wonderful, unique” next time Pards.
How many times as he told us following the Carroll sale that he would never say never again? Now on Krul and Santon, he says, “Even if we got an extraordinary offer the answer would be a ‘no’. There is no point ringing us.” WTF?! 🙄

      (Quote)

  12. B&B – I have simply come to the conclusion that Pards isnt very bright 😐

      (Quote)

  13. BigPapa – “the last thing we need is another poacher/finisher type like Danny Graham.”

I’d love a poacher/finisher type like anyone! Yeah, its good to see brilliant goals like cisse’s from distance, but I love stab ins from a yard. I don’t care if a player hasn’t got pace as long as he knows how to find the back of the net. I’d take a Micky Quinn right now if there’s one out there.

      (Quote)

  14. What would make sense as a policy on transfers would be to have say two or three players with the same level of ability on a short list for each position required, and prioritise in order of transfer fee. Try and get the player that is going to cost the least in transfer fees and wages first and if it works brilliant! If it doesn’t happen for whatever reason instead of sulking about it and then rummaging in the bins for loans or cheapos, accept that the next target is gonna cost more, move onto it make a proper offer and start being serious instead of pussyfooting around.

      (Quote)

  15. Cheers Liam, just dont think Graham adds anything at all.

Im not getting excited anymore. To be honest with our Transfer policy we are in a vicious circle. Its a policy designed to be in the Top 8 and no higher. Get players every now and then that are young enough to sell, but never show enough ambition to keep them for more than 2/3 years. We never get the players we want if someone else is in for them, considering we only seem to scout France that is not going to work,

If we say we only buy good players who are value for money, why do we never pay wages that reflect how good they are?

In the summer Ben Arfa, Colo, Cabaye and Krul will be off, the have seen what this club is like now, going from 5th to 16th in 6months because we didnt spend any money after qualifying for Europe and finsihing 5th.

Looks like we have bought these to put them in a shop window for anyone else to buy. I almost feel as bad as I have ever felt following the toon, just feels like we are in a vicious circle where no matter who we sign now, no matter if your doing well or not these situations will just keep coming back around.

Seen someone post the other day that if we had pushed on in the summer Colo would be still be happy, Ba would not have ‘seemed’ desperate to be out we would not be hearing all these quotes from unhappy players who are playing hoof ball with out reserves.

      (Quote)

  16. Liam ST – I particularly liked this one from last month.

“We’ve got a re-newed energy back, senior players playing at a new level, only really missing Cabaye.” 😆

As well as being delusional, it’s a back handed insult to Sayls and Rayls, who were also injured at the time.

      (Quote)

  17. B&B – its not just that he just seems to fathom circumstances weeks after everyone else. He never seems convinced or confident in what he is saying.

It may just be his character but of late especially he appears uneasy and nervous hence why he spouts some much rubbish at times.

      (Quote)

  18. B&B OK we get another poacher type, where does he play?

I want a striker, but we ended up with Cisse on the wing cos he and Ba werent playing well together, both making the same runs. We ended up in 16th cos we lost one player and all of our creativity as a team. We have lost Ba partly because we had no other options but to hoof it, even with Ben Arfa.

Not enough pace and creativity in this team and that needs sorting, can’t believe there has been no bid for a creative player at all.

Danny Graham would not change any of these things mate.

      (Quote)

  19. B&B – my favourite of late has been ‘Cabaye coming back will be like a new signing’ (talk about antagonising the fans)

or better yet ‘Sameobi has a way of getting out of tight situations’ dear me that one cracked me up for ages. IS that tight situation ‘effort’ perhaps 🙄

      (Quote)

  20. Pardew is doing my nut literally everytime I hear him talk, and this is incredible, saying the Fans are gonna play an important part in Colo staying.

Bullsh*t. Do you think that its the Clubs ambition or the fans that will keep a player and keep him happy.

    http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/10170743._/?

Also though this was revealing and proves something fishy is going on….

Its all down to NUFC and a lack of ambition. Does though if true prove Colo is bailing out on another relegation scrap.

      (Quote)

  21. There may be an element of truth in what you say, but in the Case of Remy, Redknapp tried to sign him for Spurs last year, and has long been an admirer of the player having scouted him personally for several years.

      (Quote)

  22. Big Dave – sound like we had him on a flight to Tyneside that then landed in London. Factor in Redknapp and you know something incredibly dodgy went down.

But at the end of the day people say QPR offered ridiculous wages but if really it came down to our tight-fisted approach to everything

Get him in ASAP. Talented manager that plays good football,

  24. Good blog in the northern Echo basically saying if the club had have paid an extra couple of million in transfer fees and agent fees last summer they would have had Debuchy, Douglas and De Jong. Talk about false economics. Where would we have been in the league? To get that money back we would only needed to have been 14th!!!

The problem is I do not believe they have learnt and in their mind a good balance sheet in the here and now is all that matters – forgetting what the balance sheet would most likely look like if they invested a bit.

    Sad but true.

      (Quote)

  25. God I hope Southampton sack Adkins! They have just started to play well and pick up points – I think sacking him and replacing him with a Spaniard will not go down well with the players or the fans. They will go down!

      (Quote)

  26. Stuart – I think last season just goes to show what we’re missing out on while Ashley is here, we will always get so far and then it will all go tits up when we don’t buy to try and push on.

With a proper owner in charge we would be a Top 6 team, a couple of players in the summer would have consolidated us there for this season.

But we don’t have a proper owner, we have the guy that owns that cheap, tacky second rate sports shop that has been about being second best for years

      (Quote)

  27. I’ve not been overly impressed with some of Pards’ utterings recently, but the schtick he’s getting on here is daft. He’s basically come out yesterday and laid it on the line for Ashley – a brave, and possibly terminal, move. **** or bust. What more do you want him to do than that? He’s basically put his job on the line and called his boss’s bluff.

In Danny Graham: I’d have him as backup to Cisse/Shola if he’s available. But he’s not the answer; I agree that we need small, quick, poacher-type.

I’m just hoping that the recruitment team have done it again and sent the press off on wild goose chases while they sort deals we don’t know about until they’re done. They have previously, so you never know.

  28. Adkins wouldnt be astep forward, would people have di matteo or benitez? I think Di Matteo would be a decent shout if we were to get shot of pards, and I have to say if we lose tomorrow I think he could be away. Maybe thats what the board are waiting on, see if he can be backed. I think if we dont get 6 points from the next 2 games we are pretty fairly squarely in the depths of it.

I am trying hard not to get too carried away but I am like everyone desperate for a lift a good signing would give us.

      (Quote)

  29. Sorry Papa I dont agree. The owner is working on the financial side which we need. The club cant go back to those days.

I think the problem is the coaching and manager. We have very talented players who dont seem to be utilised to the full. The owner doesnt train or pick the team. We have a squad of very highly paid players who need better coaching and management IMHO.

I think I am starting to wonder if Pards may well need replacing.

Listen to yourself! The manager can only do so much which the players at his disposal. How can he bring success this season when the likes of Perch, Williamson, Simpson, Obertan and Strolla are playing regular? Add to that young players like Bigi, Fergie, Ameobi and Tavernier who just are not ready!

The owner is the problem and do not say he needs to keeo the finances in check – there are other ways of doing that other than just not being prepared to pay a pound more than they think is reasonable. If they had relented last summer and actually paid a bit more we would have been in a better financial position than we are today, so his model is too rigid and therefore flawed!!

  32. Fair play Stu, I think it needs to be a bit more of a middle ground between our views and we would be in the right place. He does need backing and have always said that, but I do wonder with the tactics employs sometimes. Just a bit of window feever I think. Humble apologies

  33. Toonsy ,it’s an interesting read and I can see what you mean but tbh I think with Twitter and greedy agents and clubs/players it’s never gonna stay a secret for long. I don’t doubt there are lazy club scouts who have taken to shadowing Carrs every move one bit but it’s only half the story of our epic fail thus far in the last couple of windows. My question would be ,why on earth are we bothering with Carr if after all our scouting we faff about over the odd couple of million on valuations and miss out on a potential game changer 🙄.Also why are we so pre-occupied with France ,why arn’t we scouting Belguim ,Holland (Anita accepted) Norway ,Russia and south America more. 😕

      (Quote)

  36. Yeah I thought that Southampton were just putting together some results. Hopefully from our perspective it destabilizes them a bit. But seeing how things are going it will probably send them on a 5 game winning streek 🙄

      (Quote)

  37. Looks like Arry intends to play Remy through the middle ,apparently he favors that more than being out wide 🙄 Maybe that was a factor in not coming to us too 😕 He did cite football reasons ,though the money obviously helps I know.

      (Quote)

  38. One thing Pardew can do for sure is talk the talk. The rest of the skills needed to move the team forward i.e. tactical awareness, solving defensive frailties etc…basically footballing issue, I’m just not sure, really, I think it is a case of Pardew fiddling as the toon burns… 👿 👿 .

I really feel that we are pinning too much optimism on this transfer window, cos I’m sure at the end of January we’ll be left with pretty much the same team to see out the season..plus Debuchy and the returning injured players. Perhaps rightly so too, because I’m not convinced a new signing or two will give us the boost we need to go on an avoiding relegation push. We need to find the strength within, and the players who got us in the **** will need to step up to the plate and get us out of the ****. It’s gonna be really difficult though without Ba’s goals, Collocini taking the **** out of the club, and with the “distraction” of the Europa League to contend with.

I fear the worst, the clubs down below seems to be going on an upward curve while we are still floundering ..

This talk of him wanting to play for San Lorenzo was the 1 we heard with his Dad saying that he would need to find a way out of his contract, then all of a suden Colo has personal problems imo that is the biggest load of **** I have heard for a while.
If Colo had real problems ie his wife being sick etc there is no way his Dad would have mudded the waters, and Colo and the club would have sorted it out behind closed doors and we wouldn’t hear fuk all from his Dad telling us that Colo wanted out and would love to play for them but 1st he has to get out of the excellent contract that he has with us.

  49. I’m with Toonsy, I think we actually dodged a bullet with Remy – bit of the Ballotellis about him I reckon. I also agreed with CC in that it was the likes of Barton who went public, but Harry had been out to OM at the same time as us when their own said publicly that he’d be prepared to let Remy go. I’m not entirely convinced that Carrs phones are tapped just yet.

I’m amazed that Adkins has been sacked at Saints. Madness like that just strengthens my belief that we should stick with Pardew, but get his players in. Re Saints tho, I’d defo go for Puncheon now the new manager has came in.

Players who we could get in by the end of the window who I’d like to see in: Gouffran, Matt Phillips, Nathan Redmond, Craig Cathcart and Haidara. Don’t expect to get as many players as that but I’d settle for a defender, attacking midfield/winger forward type player and a CF.
Of the players I’ve named, Gouffran and Puncheons contract run out in the summer so reckon we could get both for around £6m.

  51. Reading Pards comments in the papers today – the guy just doesn’t think before mouthing off. If we don’t get two new players we’ll go down. Is that a come and sack me plea. Look at last season, with the same players plus Debuchy, minus Ba we took about 30 points from the second half. Bearing in mind Ba didn’t score but was just a nuisance. What’s different? Plot and losing comes to mind!
