Game On! Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle

Game on in Ukraine
Newcastle take on Metalist Kharkiv in the 2nd leg of this Europa League Round of 32 tie this evening knowing that anything less than a score draw will see them eliminated from the competition.

A lively venue, Kharkiv’s rather unimaginably named Metalist Stadium – nicknamed the spider due to the appearance of the supporting pillars outside the ground – is likely to be full to the rafters with roughly 500 Geordies squeezed into the 40,000 capacity ground.

The Metalist Stadium was used as a ground for EURO 2012 and should be familiar with Tim Krul as the Netherlands played all three of their group stage games at this very ground. Granted Timmy will be playing this time rather than having to make do with a place on the bench but at least it breeds some form of familiarity within the squad. It’s not a complete unknown to everyone.

Unfortunately, something that isn’t a complete unknown, is the partizan behaviour of their supporters. They are vocal and vociferous but a section of them have also been shown to be racist, something that was brought to light prior to EURO 2012 via a BBC documentary highlighting racist and anti-sematic behaviour within the ground. Let’s hope that tonight it is the football that does the talking and that if anything unsavoury does develop we just walk off the pitch.

Anyway, back to football. United have named a 19 man squad that will be tasked with getting a result in Ukraine. That squad can be viewed here along with some other stuff in our match preview article. Have a gander of you haven’t already done so!

Remember this is an early kick-off here in the UK which is why this is published early. Team news should be out around 5pm (kick-off at 6pm) and will be updated by Big Dave as soon as he can as I’ll be working and will be missing the match. On the other hand, me missing the match increases the chances of us getting a result as I seem to have a knack of just watching us lose!

Which neatly wraps this up. In the build up to the game it’s been argued how seriously we should be taking the match but by the end of the night we’ll know if the Europa League is something we’ll have to think about going forward or whether we can consign another cup campaign to history vault.

Howay the lads!

  1. Obertan for Ameobi Pards cmon. Just hit balls into the corners and let obertan run their defence into the ground.

  2. the defense was good overall even if they have a few good chances to score. But Anita, Cababye, Cisse, Marv really poor.
Good impression by Haidara firs time i see him played.

  4. That sounded like that required a little more effort than we had hoped. The lads will surely feel the affects on Saturday.

  5. Great result and a really professional performance. Was impressed with Haidara and thought that we looked solid.

    Bring on the Saints!

  8. A day to celebrate. I will have to bow down to Shola once more. Great penalty. Haidara looked very good as did the rest of the lads. Krul was superb in the final quarter. Hope neither Krul or Cabaye are injured though. We treated the away supporters to a great game!

  9. Mbiwa & Haidara the pick of the bunch for me considering full debuts..

excellent result. Our team looks hungry and we have options all over the pitch 😀

  10. Has Shola ever missed a penalty? His bow is going to run out of space for strings soon!! Sure that’s 10 out of 10. Hope he retires in about 4 years having never missed one.

  11. Will wait till after the saints game to judge if tonight was a good result.. lose sat and tonight has been a disaster playing so many purples. injuries tiredness etc…we had to work hard for that..will be livid if the pardew “the euro game hurt us” comments come out…

  12. Shola hasnt missed a competitive penalty. Why oh why do we feature him in Europe? 😆

Haidara may actually start to feature in Santons nightmares. Not surprised Anita, Marv had mixed games, they could be excused for trying too hard. Having said that, we are through, conceded none, how many competitive games can we say that about?

As a postscript to the topic of the closeness of this tie to the Southampton game, we appear to have 2 possible key injuries. I hope we dont pay for the effort.

Overall Anita was alright, Marveaux on the other hand was poor. Easy to see why he’s behind Jonas in the pecking order, lack of urgency and needs to make better decisions.

  14. MARVO, MARVO, MARVO 😆 I see he’s being hammered on here tonight. I don’t get it. It wasn’t one of his better games, but he’s a footballer who’s comfortable on the ball. It’s no co-incidence that we played some football tonight all over the park; moves didn’t break down with him as they do with other players. He was responsible too for the best, most innovative move of the match.

Who was the NUFC player on show tonight with the worst footballing brain? You won’t need a clue but here’s one. When we needed an outlet, he either fouled or was caught offside. This allowed the opposition to turn the tables when it should never have happened. It might have cost us the game on another occasion.

  15. Haidara had a great debut, very good positionally, athletic and decent on the ball. Reminded me a bit of Olly Bernard. In fact the whole defence looked very good; even simmo had a blinder by his standards.

  16. MOTM: Sissoko He makes such a difference. His presence lifts other players’ games

  18. Football Violence. What a backward world we live in. The authorities should come down like a ton of bricks, but they won’t. Newcastle will probably get fined more for a couple of smoke bombs.

  19. B & B @139. Toon get fined for a couple of fart bombs and a kid with pants half mast on the pitch. Meanwhile English fans are targeted with violence in Ukraine and in France by Nazi’s. What will the frenchman running UEFA do about that?? Oh and fank thuck Pardew didn’t listen to the idiots saying.. ”play the stiffs”.

  20. Only managed to see the game on PVR later.

Thought the defensive display was excellent. Also thought Shola lead the line well. The game suited him because we reverted back to a long ball defensive display and it was played at a slow tempo.
He took his penalty well, but then that’s one thing he always does well.
I still don’t think he’s good enough for a start in the Premiership games which are always high tempo. Unless its the Mackems of course and maybe Stoke.
But if he can show the effort, workrate and first touch he showed tonight, he’d be a more than handy option from the bench in the last half and hour.
His problem has never been being able to put in the odd good display. Its been doing that consistently.
But regardless, well played Shola. Very happy with the result.

Though Haidara showed massive potential. Though Mbiwa was excellent and Anita was good too.

Best player on the night again… Sissoko. He is quality!

  21. Good win, good performance, Timmy and Sissoko were great, Shola never lets us down…..from the spot and young hairdryer was canny too…oh and Pards played it well too, although according to some it’s only owt to do with him if we lose 🙄 😉 Howay the Lads.

  22. According to newspaper reports we obviously played long ball last night. Don’t think this would have suited Marv or Anita. Hope we go back to football on Sunday. Pleased with the result though.

  23. Groucho…yep, still played decent stuff in small patches. Hoofball generally rules when there are niggling fouls coming in all the time unfortunately.

  24. Sissoko was everything for us going forward.

I suspect Pardew is going to have another dilemma. Playing HBA or Sissoko in that position. I suspect he may be faced with another Ba/ Cisse problem the two might not be able to play in the same team.

I think Sissoko creates chances and HBA will benefit from that but not the other way around. HBA tries to take on too many people when a simple pass would be better.

It would be interesting to see. Knowing Pardew he will force both into the team. Worse when Goufron is fit.

Can Pardew really have them all in the same team? I really doubt it. Would be great but for me a Tiote or Cabaye is going to have to lose their automatic starting roles.
