Game On! FC Anzhi Makhachkala v Newcastle

The Luzhniki Stadium
A home from home – The Luzhniki Stadium

Newcastle travel to Moscow this evening where they will contest the first leg of a two-legged Round of 16 Europa League tie with FC Anzhi Makhachkala.

United will need to be at their best to get anything against an outfit who has had little trouble getting results at home. Armed with an array of attacking talent, Guss Hiddink will be looking for his side to grab something to protect at St James’ Park for the second leg.

In the match preview (which you can read here) it was revealed that Papiss Cisse was doubtful with an illness which has subsequently ruled him out of the game and he has been left on Tyneside to hopefully recover for the visit of Stoke on Sunday. Adam Campbell will replace him leaving a 19-man matchday squad that looks a bit like this:

Rob Elliot, Jak Alnwick, Danny Simpson, Davide Santon, Massadio Haidara, Steven Taylor, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, James Perch, Cheick Tiote, Gael Bigirimana, Yohan Cabaye, Vurnon Anita, Hatem Ben Arfa, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Moussa Sissoko, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell

So a team will need to be picked out of that lot. Personally I don’t think there will be too many surprises and we can pretty much all get close to naming the team that will play. For confirmation purposes though, team news will be published below as and when it becomes available.

We are live on ITV4 this evening, presumably now Liverpool have been eliminated, so there is no excuse to miss the match providing you’re at home and have access to a TV. However some people don’t have TV’s or won’t be at home or don’t live in the UK so can’t get ITV4 so streams will still be needed. I don’t see an issue with picking one up though so if you do find one then by all means feel free to share it with your fellow NUFC fans by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Which just about wraps this up and leaves us with the football to talk about. Hopefully we’re talking about it in a positive light come 7pm.

Howay the lads!

Anzhi Makhachkala: Gabulov, Eschenko, Joao Carlos, Zhirkov, Ewerton, Jucilei, Shatov, Ahmedov, L. Diarra, Willian, Eto’o

Subs: Pomazan, Tagirbekov, Logashov, Gadzhibekov, Carcela-Gonzalez, Traore, Smolov.

Newcastle: Elliot – Simpson, Yanga-Mbiwa, Perch, Haidara – Anita, Cabaye- Marveaux, Sissoko, Obertan – Ben Arfa. (4-2-3-1)

Subs: Alnwick, Santon, S.Taylor, Bigirimana, Tiote, Shola Ameobi, Campbell.

  1. I’ll be happy with anything less than a 3-0 defeat. Hatem with an away birthday goal will do nicely.

  2. An away goal would be massive. A draw great. Hopefully when they come to SJP we are still in the tie. I would be happy with a 2-1 defeat.

  3. 4,3,2,1 with barfa up front. Howay the lads!!!

    Ben Arfa
    Marveaux, Obertan
    Sissoko, Cabaye, Anita
    Haidara, Mapou, Perch, Simpson
    Elliot

  4. Prem – I’d be ecstatic with a 1-2 defeat. However, I’ve never seen them play (has anyone). Some really big names often don’t perform when you expect. They’ve got good players but we’ve got Shola!

  5. Nee one can accuse Pardew of bottling it like.

Though I’m sure there’ll be plenty on here accusing him of summit or other in a short while.

  7. Love that tingly feeling you get when you know HBA is starting!

Brave line up from Pard’s, I would have gone fairly strong, but I’m not sure I would have risked HBA in Europe after so long out.

  8. Tbh there’s no point resting him in Russia, if there’s a game he’d get injured in it’ll be the Stoke rugby team anyway

You really must find a girlfriend 😉 😆

  10. Haha Richie, watching HBA is an aphrodisiac didn’t you know?
Reckon my best performances have come following one of his wonder goals.
Tell me when I’ve crossed a line 😆

  11. Are we really playing barfa upfront on his own? Lot to ask with him just back from injury? Surely obertan / sissoko upfront? 😕

  12. For those of you outside UK with no access to the match on tv try this one, it’s better than a stream. Load the link up then in the top right corner click on the HD bit,it says “pay”on it but ignore that, you don’t have to pay if you maximise it straight away.
http://www.filmon.com/#ITV4 as long as you have a reasonable speed it won’t buffer, I only have 4mb and its usually fine, if not just click on the SD(free) one, obviously not as good a picture but I’ve never had that buffer.

  16. Moreno I had to do without my lunch to get finished early enough, so I hope we play decent otherwise I might be a grumpy *****, like a few of the bloggers on here lately

  17. are the whole team wearing tights? i know it looks a bit sissy but if it helps reduce muscle injuries in the cold temperature i don’t care

now wear do i get a pair

  18. Rich – haha. Not only that, build wtching MOTD means looking at and listening to Lorro…..

  19. It most be cold in Moscow cos I can hear the fans shouting “Gansey”… 😳 😳

  20. MM..it’s the same link I give ya for motd a while back, it has all the brit freeview channels, some “Joorman” ones too.

    Sham…very true 😆

  21. I quite like Simmo. Be a shame to see him go. We would have good depth in that position with him and Debuchy.

  22. Obertan’s con’s definitely outweight his pro’s in my book. Just don’t rate him. Loads of pace, not a bad touch – can occasionally finish – but his decision making is bloody aweful. Other than that, we are doing OK against a good side in a difficult climate.

  23. Dave ,me too thought we might get battered like. 2nd half to come yet mind 🙄 best not talk too soon.

      (Quote)

  24. glad we’ve picked a technical team, havn’t looked sloppy and loast the ball at all 👿

  25. Excellent performance so rfar from the lads, and a steady ref who is having a great game.

Howay the lads, keep it up.

Carrying Obertan though, the bloke is totally gash 😥

      (Quote)

  26. campbell on at half time hopefully, in place of obertan, maybe shola to replace ben arfa middle of second half

  27. Man what a FANTASTIC performance from our “reserve” defence. All 5 were absolutely magnificent in that first half. Simmo and Hairdryer were both immense, and the 2 lads in the middle were rock solid.

The clue is in the midfield line up, well done Pardew, packing the midfield with mobile footballers who all look super confident on the ball, despite the astroturf.

Splendid tactics from Pardew first half. The last thing we want to do is start changing the line up, keep it tight lads !

  28. Would love to see Oba coming of as he hasn’t done that much and young Campbell getting a run out as it could do him the world of good if he came on and made a difference

  29. What a lovely player Anita is – lively and intelliigent. Keeps his eye on the play all the time.
