Taylor for England!

Back on the England scene
Back on the England scene
Steven Taylor has finally been called up to represent the England senior team following the withdrawal of Gary Cahill from Roy Hodgson’s squad.

I’d just like to congratulate Steven on this and must say that it’s been overdue going by his performances in recent weeks. I’m sure he won’t be reading this but still…

Personally I can’t think of many other English defenders in better form right now and I feel he should have been called up originally rather than as a result of other players pulling out of the squad. If players such as Rio Ferdinand and Gary Cahill hadn’t pulled out then it’s unlikely Taylor would have got the call which is harsh on a lad who has performed well since his return from injury.

However Taylor now has the chance to impress the right people within the England camp. He’s been given the chance and now it’s up to him to show that he is capable of performing at a level which will make him a consideration for future squads.

Taylor has been involved with the senior England side before having been called up against Germany in 2007. He didn’t feature in that game and has since drifted away from the international scene after long involvement with England at youth and U21 levels. If he plays any part in the forthcoming games against San Marino or Montenegro it will be his first full England cap although you could argue that injuries have perhaps prevented from already featuring for his country.

As a United fan I’m made up for him. I’m not too fussed about the England national team generally after events in recent years, but having one of your own players in there makes a difference and I, for one, will be watching to see if Taylor gets a chance to impress at international level.

Best of luck Steven!

  1. I’m sure he won’t be reading this but can his head get even bigger? 😆
    Congratulations nevertheless.

  2. I honestly believe that if not for injuries Saylor who be an England regular.
It does bother me that regardless of how well he does for club or Country other players who be selected ahead of him based on the club they play for rather than how well or regularly they play, but that’s my problem.
Best of luck to ya Saylor – don’t forget to gangnam the San Marino keeper 😉 😆

  3. good to see wor stevie getting a well deserved england call up – it comes with the added pleasure of knowing that stardust’s nose will be well & truly put out of joint along with the stats mad internet mainiacs that keep telling us how ***** he is.

    well done lad.

  4. Yeah well done Stevie lad chuffed for him.
Roy C funny Stardy was the 1st thing I thought of when I seen he had got a call up 😆 im sure he’ll have some excuse as will a few others on here that like to slag him of, I will be interested in seeing if any of the same ones comment on this thread 😉

  5. Congrats to Steven. He’s been in fantastic form for us since he’s come back. I may even have to support england again as my number 2 for the first time since the shearer days

  6. Will be good to actually have an interest in an England game again. Im expecting no less than 3 goal line clearances from Taylor. one with his face, one with an overhead kick and one with his balls (again:D).

When are the England games btw?

      (Quote)

  7. Roy/Dave…Funnily enough I was doing some gardening and was thinking about Stardy…I must add I was thinking about him because of his views on Tayls and not because I had a big hose in my hand 😯 😆

Congrats Tayls, well deserved on current form.

  8. I really like Sylor. He outs his body on the line and is a force in the air, however I just think he’s consistent enough to be a regular International. He is prone to the occasional absolute shocker of a decision that loses us games and if that happened to him at International level I reckon it would totally destroy his confidence, as the media and fans from other clubs would be all over him.

I’m not sure this is a good thing for us as a club, especially given how injury prone he is. We are already without Colo.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m made up for him, but he’s not good enough for long enough to be considered an England regular.

Before everyone jumps on me, there are plenty on this site that argue tht he is not even good enough to be in our 1st team every week. I disagree, but Englnd is another level all together (once they reach the major competitions)…

  9. Very pleased for stevie T ,hope he does himself and Toon proud. 😀 Oh and please don’t pick up an injury .

  10. Such a bizarre decision from the FA but no actual surprise – the linesmen partially saw a coming together but missed the tackle – surely that means he didn’t see it clearly so the FA should act – nice message to the youngsters out there – go break a leg, just make sure someone sees a bit of it

      (Quote)

  11. Always thought the FA were spineless. I remember Gordon Strachen was always igetting punished by the FA but sod all has ever been done about Fergie’s rants.

      (Quote)

  12. What the hell are the FA thinking FFS!!.
So because one of the officials has seen the ‘coming together’ but not the full extent of the challenge – I career ending challenge goes unpunished?! 👿
Surely that is why they get to review the incident, but how the hell has the official that saw it not realized the extent of it – you could hear Haidara scream from Northumberland St FFS!!.
NUFC have been so let down over this it’s sickening. If that was Evra do you think the outcome would have been the same?!.

      (Quote)

  13. We now have the De Jong tackle and Mcnanaman’s tackle going unpunished. Is there an anti-NUFC agenda? Like Lambias’ statement on the NUFC official site.

      (Quote)

  14. Great news for the lad, bet he stays on the bench though, if Caulker got called up ahead of him, he’ll be started ahead as well. Can’t believe the FA aren’t charging them, they are “the most lamentably dishonest group that history has known”. 😡

      (Quote)

  15. Single handedly the F.A sweep away their entire respect agenda and destroy confidence in not just some individuals but the entire discipline process of the F.A. I take my hat off to them.

      (Quote)

  16. I used to be under the misapprehension that FA stood for Football Association but when it comes to taking reasonable action it clearly means what justice you’ll get – and it’s not sweet.

      (Quote)

  17. What I don’t get is, if a player is red carded by the referee (who has obviously seen the incident), the FA can decide to retrospectively wave the red card and ban, if they feel it was awarded incorrectly. So in that instance they CAN retrospectively overrule the referee. But here they are saying that because an official saw it and took no action at the time, they are unable to overrule him.

      (Quote)

  18. Epsilonj – very good point mate. I really can’t understand how they have come to this conclusion. The statement almost reads ‘we’d like to do something but we can’t’ – so what the fucking point in them then?!.

      (Quote)

  19. Sharpy – I know mate. They talk about these rules as if they are fundamental laws of the universe, when in fact they are the ones who make them!

Mick Lowes on BBC Newcastle reporting that preliminary indications are positive on Haidara. Probably still bad, not not as bad as it could have been. Still early days though.

      (Quote)

  20. Who ever has the SSN app available to them there’s a specky fast talking ***** on one of the short videos example how and why they are unable to overrule or give a ban.
I don’t wish to keep harping back to rugby but as a sport it would never get something this badly wrong like.

      (Quote)

  21. Disgraceful decision by FA,feel we should follow Everton’s example with regard to Kevin Nolan and follow a legal option, good luck Massido get well soon.
sharpy17 just seen speccy think he cant tell his **** from his elbow totally agree the FA need to take a lesson from rugby, let us all get behind Millwall next month

      (Quote)

  22. So the FA can sometimes retroactively act and sometimes not. Complete nonsense. This might be the one and only occassion but I agree completely with Llambias in this case. We get the shaft again as usual and McManaman gets away scot free. Halsey and the linesman should both step down as they are useless to officiate at this level. Congratulations to Saylor. Well earned lad.

      (Quote)

  23. Tommy – notice how he kept talking so the interview couldn’t really question him on it. To say things like they don’t want to re-referee the game coz they’d have loads of incidents to review – well if that was the case they’d need to question the quality of the referees they employ. But also, would that be such a bad thing if it meant getting the decision right – rather than a wrong decision immediately. When you think of the amounts of money involved in football I’d imagine all teams would be on board in changing the review system.

      (Quote)

  24. Ironically John Carver and John Barrow charge by the FA for misconduct – weren’t they dealt with on the day?!

Wilfried Zaha ban 1 game and fined £3k for a gesture at Leeds fans.

    It just defies belief.

      (Quote)

  25. I wonder what the FA would have done if the victim was english and played for one of the favored few???

      (Quote)

  26. This is a first- agreeing with Derek. Makes me feel a little dirty like. But seriously there can be no excuses for not charging the player especially considering the retroactive punishments for players like Cabaye, Tiote etc over lesser offenses in the past.

      (Quote)

  27. Well done Stevie Taylor , a well deserved call up . It got me thinking ,who was the last player we brought through the ranks and got capped for England and how long ago was it ?

      (Quote)

  28. Axel Carroll in a friendly a couple of months before we sold him, so it was late 2010 🙄 .

I’m aware of that but feel with so many first teamers out we are in even more trouble, we’ve got a top 5 first team, top ten with a few backups but with a few 1st teamers and the rest backup we are in a relegation scrap.

Have we had a full team all season. But more to the point with the new signings, with everyone fit we would be a top team.

      (Quote)

  31. What the ****.
If either the referee or linesman saw it then they should be sacked.
Ironic that I feel slightly sorry for the Wigan kid now, if there’s one thing football fans hate more than a fouling scumbag, it’s someone that doesn’t get their deserved punishment. He’s in for a whole lot of abuse.

      (Quote)

  32. So I get that things are missed in the speed of the games.
IF THEY SAW IT HOW WAS IT NOT EVEN A FREEKICK

      (Quote)

  33. sharpy 17@32 i echo your thoughts about changes why not introduce a fifth official that is in charge of video replay’s like in rugby or cricket. This means players can’t try to intimidate officials to influence decisions as the fifth official could be given overall power to ref the game from the safely in their tv box, 99% of decisions would be correct. Also adopt an american system where the ref calls out the foul plays so people know what it is for and can see the punishment . a friend of my said the FA are arsehole but i have to disagree because one of them is some use

      (Quote)

  34. The FA would prefer football to still be played in baggy shorts and hobnail boots with footballers earning two bob a week and smoking fags at halftime – the whole rule book is stuck in the 60s along with the whole lot of em sitting in thier wood panelled offices going on about 66, bobby Carlton and how we invented football and Johnny Foreigner is an upstart who doesn’t like it up em

      (Quote)

  35. What I can’t fathom is if they don’t want to be re -reffing games why are they recinding red cards?. If a player has been dealt with unjustly equaly he should be punished retrospectivly wether seen or not .In both cases the officials have seen the incident and dealt with it getting it wrong in both cases. The linesman in that game was so say 30 yards away ,if as he says he saw it why no foul? ,let’s be honest the lads scream which supporters on forums all say they heard from the other end of the pitch was loud enough to tell everyone it was serious contact. I heard it above the crowd and commentary and shouted out straight away for a foul ,that it was not given still baffles me . To compound matters the lino misses the clear handball in the box leading up to the winner. Talk about a comedy of errors ,all compounded by the complete and utter incompetance that comes out the English FA.

      (Quote)

  36. Haidara should sue Wigan just like Victor Anichibe sued Newcastle over Nolans tackle .Didn’t we settle out of court on that one.

      (Quote)

  37. On Taylor and England ,I would hope Roy remembers Stevie never let him down when called upon like some, when the world cup squad is announced.

  38. Rumour is Carrick will play CB instead of Stevie…when was Carrick played in midfield for England last? 🙄

  39. Good luck to Saylor fully meritted, Even if it will be as back up to players who have been playing in the stiffs for Woys favoured few clubs while wor lad has been outstanding for us at home and in europe. Lets hope he might get on at some time friday night.

Also love Hodgsons belting comment about Ben Foster giving him two quality keepers to choose from: Charming thing for Forster, Butland, Ruddy, Green, Carson etc. who have made the effort to go and give their all in training and prepare for matches if needed. While Foster ***** moaned at home for 2 years because Joe Hart is head and shoulders better than him…

  40. Just had a look at the remaining 8 games. 4 against relegation rivals and 4 against the top seven. With everyone fit then no worries but really we needed a point or two against Swans and Wigan. So 2 wins from 8. Sounds easy but where are the goals coming from? And if either CB gets a knock we’re back to Simmo and Willo.
The form of some of our players and fitness of others is really worrying. Is Cabaye always going to be bothered by groin issues? Santon’s now got an injury. No Haidara.

      (Quote)

  41. God after last week and really wanting to go for the Europa, it’s all gotten a bit tight again. No doubt Wigan will unjustly escape relegation again this season, but who will be that third team? Said at the start of the season I thought Villa had too much quality to go down, still think that’s true. Unfortunately..

      (Quote)

  42. Even if Haidara is fit to come back this season, I don’t think we should risk it. Just let him get some preseason games under his belt before we throw him straight back into the PL.

      (Quote)

  43. Andy-will have to find out what’s wrong with him first before deciding. In reality there shouldn’t be much to play for, by that I mean we probably won’t make it to the Europa league final but should be safe by May, so he probably wouldn’t be risked…

      (Quote)

  44. Does anyone know how bad Debuchys injury is? I know it was bad enough to keep him out of the French squad but haven’t heard how long he’s expected to be missing.
Same with Santon, heard nowt on him yet today either.
To be honest I think worse case scenerio I think we can get by with Anita or Jonas LB and Simmo or Perch at RB.
As Georgio rightly points out – 4 of out 8 games are winnable or can earn us a point. IMO we probably only need 4-5pts to clear the relegation zone. If we can rest some of our players during the international break and suffer no further injuries to those away on Int duties, I think we’ll be fine.
I’ll stick my neck on the line and say that Reading and QPR are gone, they’ll probably pick up afew more points before the end of the season but not enough to get them out the bottom 3. The 3rd spot will probably be fought out by Wigan and Villa. I think the teams above Villa will only just pick up enough points to stay out of it.

      (Quote)

  45. I will be amazed but very pleased if Haidara’s injury isn’t too serious. I think more scans are set for next week at the swelling is still pretty bad. Still early days yet.

    Newkie@57 , That’s nuts if true.

      (Quote)

  46. Looks like Cabaye came through training with the French team o.k ,hopefully he’s o.k for Citeh.

      (Quote)

  47. Sharpy you misunderstood my comment @59. I meant the 4 games would be tight tough relegation battles not easy points winners.

      (Quote)

  48. Kim – I’m still really concerned over Cabayes fitness for the run in. Over the last 3 seasons the lad has played too much football. He’s got short legs and not a lot of pace = groin injuries. I thought there was a rule that said if you weren’t fit for the game before Internationals you couldn’t be picked. Why did Debuchy have to travel for france but not Ferdinand for England?
If Cabaye or Santon come back crocked I’ll be fuming.

      (Quote)

  49. Georgio @69 ,I agree Cabs was obviously out of sorts/form from early season and I think it’s looking like they may of suspected he needed work done but risked letting him play. I innitialy thought he had a sulk on about Debbie not coming in as most the team seemed cheesed off but now looks like he was carrying an injury .Having fixed him to see him break down again is frustrating equaly so with Benny ,Now with Mass injured and suspected injury to Santon and Debbie sent home ,it’s all looking grim again . I do hope Cabs isn’t risked by France ,I ‘m hopefull they won’t as they have sent Debbie home to us . Santon is a real worry too now that Saylor has been called up as well ,we can ill afford to lose anymore defenders . Georgio I will be very pleased to see us at 38/40 points but it’s proving to be a real old slog getting there . 🙄

      (Quote)

  50. Georgio – sorry mate, I wasn’t putting words in your mouth, and for the record I also don’t believe that there are easy points to be had this season either. But I do think there are easier points to be had and I think Pardew has probably identified which of the remaining games he would expect to pick those points up from.

      (Quote)

  51. Sharpy ,As poor as we were first half on sunday that should of been another point in the bag there ,but alas the footballing gods decided to kick us in the nuts with a set of incompetent officials.

      (Quote)

  52. Ah those footballing gods Kim! I was speechless at the Wigan goal (both of them really) and like Toonsy I saw the handball in real time but the defending after it was woeful. A point lost.

Sharpy I think we’ll scrape through but it won’t be easy. Having said that the teams below us must feel even worse. None more so than those down the road.

      (Quote)

  53. Georgio – Alex Ferguson is great at inspiring that ‘the worlds against us’ mentality in his players and if I were Pardew I’d use Sunday to install abit of that into our players. As in we should expect no favours from the officials or the FA.
I do think that we are in a better position than the likes of Stoke, West Ham and Sunderland who have dropped points and league places and we’ve caught them up. If we get 4 more points that means Wigan will need 11 to go above us, Reading and QPR would need 15 points to go above us – I just don’t see them getting that many points mate.
I honestly believe that with the injuries we’ve sustained recently, worst case scenario we can still pick up 4 points from our remaining 8 games, however our Euro campaign may have been effected by the injuries.

      (Quote)

  54. Sharpy ,That’s a good point, Pards MUST employ the us against the world mantra from here on in 😀
