Game On! Manchester City v Newcastle United

Game On at the Etihad
Game On at the Etihad
The Premier League returns this afternoon following the international break, and the task could hardly be tougher for United.

A trip to Manchester City is on the agenda which is seldom good news for fans of Newcastle given our dismal record when visiting the blue half of Manchester. Actually, come to think of it, when visiting Manchester full stop.

The talent that Roberto Mancini has at his disposal is there for all to see. They have some truly world class players within their ranks and are always a dangerous team to play. Yet this term they’ve failed to build on the success of their title last season and look a shadow of the team that wrestled the Premier League trophy from their city neighbours on the final day of the last campaign.

As I mentioned in my match preview, for me this game is a write off. Damage limitation if you like. Just because they are pretty much out of reach of Manchester United it doesn’t mean that they are no longer a good side. They have a mean defence and a home record that compares with the best. It will be tough.

They also have a lot of players back in contention for them, again as pointed out in my match preview. We, on the other hand, are starting to see our injury list lengthen again and will struggle to name two actual full-backs for the game.

Being a 3pm game on a Saturday means that we aren’t being shown live here in the UK. However we are being shown live on a whole host of overseas channels, probably due to the fact we’re playing Manchester City. We’ve also sold out our ticket allocation so there will be plenty of fans who can’t make the game today who will perhaps be wanting to watch it online. Normal rules apply regarding streams, those being that if you find a good one then please share it with your fellow NUFC fans by leaving the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will today be provided by Big Dave. I’m at work and will be finished in time for kick-off (hopefully!) but I won’t be able to post the team news when it becomes available. You can see it in full at the bottom of this article.

Which just about wraps it up and it’s up to the players to perform at the Etihad. Will it be a case or more misery in Manchester or will we see some unlikely heroes instead?

Howay the lads!

  1. Fingers crossed but don’t see much today like.
Only bonus is that I don’t see many teams around us picking up points from their games either.

Best form of attack is on the counter today with pace of Gouffran, Sissoko, Marv and Cisse. Avoid hoof ball and try and get these players on the ball otherwise it will just come quickly back at us and our makeshift defence are gonna have a very busy day.

  2. Big Dave, I like to be positive but reality is playing a big factor in this one 🙂 🙂

  3. Aussie – I’m watching SSN over here and first game review was Scum with it being the early kick off. They were showing their remaining games and I didn’t fully appreciate just how bleak it looks for them. They were interviewing monkeys heed as well and even he stuck the boot in – that with the welcomed return of Mr Sunshine has really cheered me up today 😎 😆

  4. Sharpy if we were playing with the same verve as Sunderland at the moment, I would be worried. They have a lot of bystanders on the park. They are in some trouble going forward…

  5. Really strange that Obertan is in. Also notice that Good must be ahead of Willo in the pecking order now. Maybe loan time helped him out.

  6. Aussie – I work with a couple of Scum fans and they are worried mate, big time worry especially with Fletcher and Cattermole out. They openly admit that if they survive it will be thanks to other teams not being able to pick up the points rather than Scum improving. Yet another manager they want out! 😯 they’re great neighbours for our long suffering toon fans – grass certainly isn’t greener 😆

F**king Obertan?! – can only think Marv is either carrying a knock of being kept back for the Benfica game. Pleased with Anita being in there tho and think it makes most sense to have Jonas at LB.

  7. Oh, and welcome back Simpson! Willo must probably has become a real ‘the other guy’. Will he make his 100th appearance for us?

  8. Sharpy – MON has always been a cheque book manager IMO. We aren’t safe yet but at least we are having a crack..

  11. Just looking at the City line up again and I think Pardew has selected Obertan to help Simpson out defensively. With Nasri and Silva wide I think Anita will probably be told to help Jonas double up on his wide man as well. I might be wrong but that’s what I think Pardew will look at doing.
I see us getting destroyed in midfield today like 🙁

  12. So is Anita left back or Jonas? 😯

Anyway, i take this match as a relaxation of watching football, Not pinning much hope of a win. 😳

  16. Danny Simpson proves that to be a professional footballer you don’t need to be able to pass a ball to a team mate. Mindboggling
