Gomis deal agreed. Sort of…

Gomis set to sign?
Gomis set to sign?
Newcastle United and Olympique Lyonnais have come to an agreement over the transfer of Bafetimbi Gomis to St James’ Park, but all is not cut and dried just yet.

A fee of €8 million along with an additional €2 million in the form of an unspecified bonus has been accepted by Lyon owner and chairman Jean-Michel Aulas although he also revealed that there are still problems to be ironed out before a deal can be concluded.

Those problems, according to Aulas, centre around the agent fees involved with the deal with the amount and way the payments are to be made along with the amount of people involved with the deal holding things up. However Aulas did conclude by saying that things would be sorted one way or the other within 24-48 hours so we’ll see how it all pans out.

“We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is eight million euros, plus two million bonus,” said Aulas.

“The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents’ fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.”

Aulas added: “There are several people involved in the operation, which complicates the negotiations, but I am hopeful that things will be resolved within 24 or 48 hours.”

Realistically things could still go either way but it does at least look as though the ball is in our court at the moment. That could change rapidly though as it’s well known we don’t bow to the demands of agents if they are far beyond what the club think they are worth.

Gomis would add some much needed presence to our striking options which, beyond Papiss Cisse, look exceedingly thin. I’d still like us to get another striker “over the line” before the window closes but if we get Gomis it is at least a start.

Signing number one might not be too far away after all.

  1. Would be ace if we got Remy and Gomis over the line. A lethal partnership up front with Cisse as a bench player

He will also play Jonas as his defensive wing back to support the LB ❗ ❗
The talk of Gomis and Remy should be encouraging, but we have the FOOL in charge.
Some on here choose to lay the blame at Ashley for the team selection and quality of the squad 😯 😯 BLAME THE FOOL ❗

  8. Tony – Pardew has his faults, no doubt about it mate. But Ashley is absolutely to blame!!.
That *** was the one who brought the FOOL in in the first place – he was then the *** that gave the FOOL an 8yr contract after one decent season.
Then instead of sacking the FOOL, The *** stuck by him and brought in the JOKE.

The *** is completely to blame for the mess we find ourselves in mate.

  11. Tony – I don’t disagree that Pardew has made mistakes – and he clearly hasn’t learnt from them coz he’s persisting with this bloody 4-2-3-1 formation, which failed him badly last season. Yet the season we finished 5th he played 4-3-3 or a formation with 2 CFs in it (Ba & Best then Ba & Cisse).
But say we got shot of Pardew. We both know that Ashley won’t go get a top quality footballing manager in. It will probs be JFK or someone equally inept. Plus, all of the off field **** will continue – like it did during our 5th finish season.
Ashley will continue to make bad decisions for our club and continue to drag its great name through the bloody mud – with or without Pards

Cisse, Gomis and Remy as the first pick forwards, Gouffran would be behind a fit Remy and Shola would never play apart from major injuries. I’m pleased we don’t seem to be after Bent. I think he would be a Kulivert type who does very little for big wages, he’s past his peak whilst Gomis and Remy are probably at their peak.

  24. At Begas;

Something is very wrong with a club’s scouting system when it recommends a player of profile ahead of others who, despite more modest reputations, would better suit its needs.

On Friday it was revealed Newcastle were close to agreeing to just such a move—a swoop for Bafetimbi Gomis that, according to Goal, would cost the Magpies around €8 million plus €2 million in add-ons.

    Mike Hewitt/Getty Images
Gomis scored 16 Ligue 1 goals for Lyon last season.
A reasonable price, to be sure, but while Gomis is a nice player, he is in no way the star striker the St. James’ Park outfit assumes it is getting.

Of course, director of football Joe Kinnear has been desperate to sign someone, anyone, since resurfacing at the club nearly two months ago. And with contract talks between Gomis and Olympique Lyonnais having broken down, he was able land a forward who has been shopped around for some time.

It’s not hard to see why.

Once you get past the facts that Gomis is a sometimes France international (he has earned 10 caps since 2008) and has represented one of the biggest clubs in the country since a 2009 move from St. Etienne, you end up with a forward who has proved massively overrated since his €13 million switch to Stade Gerland four years ago.

Kinnear, you feel, fell victim to the hype surrounding the 27-year-old and the glamour of completing a foreign acquisition. But none of that means his new signing will make much of an impact on the pitch.

    Stu Forster/Getty Images
The Gomis signing represents Joe Kinnear’s first foray into the summer transfer market.
In Gomis, Newcastle fans will find themselves with a player who ends up in offside positions far too often and who is loathe to do any sort of tracking back.

His 16 tallies may have seen him finish fourth in Ligue 1 goalscoring last season, but he also gave the ball away far too often and averaged fewer shots per match than the likes of Anthony Modeste, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Jeremie Aliadiere.

Modeste, for example, would have represented a similarly effective transfer and would have cost about half what Newcastle will end up paying for Gomis. And if Newcastle are as keen on French talent as the past few transfer windows indicate, they would have done far better to go after Toulouse attacker Wissam Ben Yedder.

That’s assuming Kinnear has heard of either player, and that he likely hasn’t only serves to further drive home the point.

    – the fact that the author of that article refers to Anthony Modeste as a decent option really compromises his credibility. (Modeste had a spell at Blackburn in their relegation season and looked like a big pile of ****).

Judging by the names he’s thrown out there, seems this guy might be basing his judgement on a stats article produced by frenchfootballweekly – http://frenchfootballweekly.com/2013/07/27/who-were-the-best-strikers-in-ligue-1-201213/… rather than having actually seen any of em in action 😆

as a counterpoint, here’s one of the responses to his article –

    ‘ Mat Pio
    Olympique lyonnais fan here.
I’m going to assume you’ve never seen him play, or Modeste for that matter. There is a big difference between an ordinary player like Modeste and a very good one like Gomis.
First, let’s get the bad stuff out of the way. He’s fairly slow for a striker, and will have a few games where he’s going to miss the unmissable 2 or 3 times. Very frustrating when that happens.
That being said, he made a lot of progress since his arrival in lyon. He has gone from poor to very very good when it comes to play with his back towards the goal. He always has a positive attitude, and always plays very hard. He can score from both feet, and can score from outside the box .He’s been lyon’s best offensive player last year.
I’m not saying he’s anywhere near a Van Persie or a Rooney ,but he is a really good player, and the only reason Lyon is getting rid of him is to afford their upcoming stadium.’

  31. I’m just wondering how they will all fit in. Assuming we are playing 4-2-3-1 then logically Gomis is the one. Then who are the three HBA, Cisse, Remy? Given that the 2 are Tiote & Jonas, where are Cabaye & Sissoko & & & ????

  35. @Stuart

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this but I’ll say it again just in case. The best footballer to don a toon shirt (not Gazza) reckons Gomis wants £100k.

It won’t happen. It will fall thru and some other club will gazump the deal. Mind, I wouldn’t pay £100k either.

      (Quote)

  36. If we do get Gomis and Remy then Cisse will be of little use and is better off sold.

The thing with Cisse is he needs a very good striker to sacrifice his goal scoring potential so that he can get goals. Gomis or Remy playing out wide would be just like Ba was playing out wide. We know they can score and score a lot but we would have to waste them out wide so cisse can score. Cisse on the other hand cannot play out wide and return the favor.

That is a stupid solution! Frankly if we get Gomis and Remy ship Cisse off I say! Far too limited in his scope of play to allow for a significant change of strategy. Goals have to be put on a plate for him to score and when we cannot put them on a plate he will not score and is useless up front.

  37. Prem, i like that set up mate..

  38. Aussie @127 ,I know I read the other day ,it was either Mark Douglas or George Caulkin who tweeted Pards wanted Bent for the number 10 slot.

m@120 ,That could well have legs as a late bid from PSG for Cabs would not surprise me one bit .Further more should it be around the £20m mark I’m pretty sure Ashley would sell.

    Troy@128 😆 😎

Prem@131 ,I would like to see both Marv and Anita get more game time this season as both have impressed. Tiote has to vastly improve on last season imo.

      (Quote)

  39. Micheal @133 ,are you seriously suggesting we sell Cisse so Gomis can play up front 😆 😯 Give your head a shake ,If his 7 disallowed goals were given last season he would of got 20 which is a pretty good return. More to the point is we need other players to chip in with their fair share and better delivery to who ever plays up top.

      (Quote)

  40. Michael, ba and cisse could not play together as a dual strike force.. both are a bit greedy and they had no chemistry. There is nothing to suggest that Gomis and cisse can’t play well in tandem up front. I can see Gomis being the mainstay with remy and cisse swapping in and out… this is of course purely speculation because we haven’t signed remy or Gomis 😕

any striker playing along side him will have to play for Cisse and that is a waste of a possible attacking option. Cisse needs chances st up on a plate and in the league you need a striker capable of a bit more than waiting for that golden chance to be served.

@Kimtoon: Not very thinking today but whats different? Big if. 8 league goals in 36 is a poor return. the fact that you have you even have to say ‘if’ show your level of desperation to back your falling argument.
