Kinnear caught in truth shocker!

So Kinnear wasn’t telling porkies about Gomis…
It seems as though I may have underestimated our “friend” Joe Kinnear in light of recent events.

Up until now I had thought that he was just an old guy, eccentric, out of touch and with a massive gob on him that he was unable to control.

In truth I still think the same way and I’m unsure if him holding the position of Director of Football will ever work out, but to be fair to him he has actually been speaking a bit of truth regarding this window’s protracted transfer target (we seem to have one every window!) which is of course Bafetimbi Gomis.

The other day Kinnear gave an interview basically saying that the goalposts keep being shifted regarding the deal and things keep changing due to the involvement of other people. Given the way our incoming transfer dealings can be drawn out I (like many perhaps?) took this statement as a signal of us just messing Gomis and Lyon about and trying to look busy rather than actually being busy.

However reports in France, from Lyon in fact, seem to back Joe Kinnear up. Seemingly Marseille have been reported for trying to disrupt the deal between Gomis and Newcastle despite the fact that the Lyon owner wants Gomis to come to Newcastle and has accepted our bid.

So maybe I’ve been too hard on Joe?

Time will tell on that one but time is something that is running out in this window and with no resolution in sight is it not perhaps now time to move down the list of striking options rather than wasting time on a deal that looks to be on the verge of collapse?

Maybe things will get sorted, maybe they won’t. All I care about is seeing the squad strengthened and everything I read or hear about Gomis seems to suggest that we’re some way away from achieving that with this deal.

Time to move on or not?

  1. Gotta move on – if the player wanted to come, then the transfer wouldn’t be dragging on. If he wants that pay rise then he would have either forced a deal or fired his agents.
I sense this one is dead in the water.

  2. The thing is I understand Gomis to play with back to the goal therefore holding up the ball and playing the others in. This would imply, given that we stick with 4-2-3-1 that Gomis is the one with Remy, Cisse & HBA as the three. That could look exciting. OR is the plan to have Cisse up top with Remy, Sissoko & HBA as the three thereby having an extra midfielder to help control that area of the park.

Personally I’d go 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield using Cisse and Remy up top thereby doing away with the need for Gomis in the 1st place, but hey never mind.

so move on is my suggestion.

  3. To be fair I never thought JFK was messing around on this one. If he was, the very vocal President of Lyon would have definately let us know about it – he’s kept us up to speed with everything else and not once has he suggested it was coz JFK was pissing about or didnt know what he was doing.
The other good news is that JFK hasn’t been focusing all his efforts on this deal, sorting the Remy deal and meeting the likes of Bent as well.

      (Quote)

  4. I agree with Premandup’s diamond @ 2, but like Gomis as well as an alternative front man.

  5. In answer to your concluding question Toonsy, we stick with it if he’s a player Pardew wants – providing we are also working on other deals too.
I’ve said before, of the 2 I’d prefer Gomis but I think we’ll end up with Bent as that deal would be easier to get sorted.
There was a thing on the SD site yesterday saying we are going for Scott Sinclair for £5m as well . As its MA site you’d think there must be some truth in that one as well (fingers crossed).

The other thing that JFK said in that interview was that he was having to work to a very tight budget set by MA – another truth I’d reckon.
Around £60m of TV revenue and still MA refuses to spend any decent money on players.

  6. As far as Kinnear is concerned, I think he’s been unneccessarily demonised by press and fans alike. It’s refreshing to see this acknowledged somewhat.

      (Quote)

  7. Bris – do you think JFK was the best possible candidate for our DoF mate?.
I agree with you that alot of the anger and frustration was directed at JFK when it should have been aimed at MA, but I don’t think he done himself any favours the way he broke the news of his appointment.
I don’t know the bloke so I can’t say I hate him, but the way he conducts himself, he doesn’t do himself any favours.

  8. All I know is that we have barrowed 1player but have got rid of 3 – 4 so for me he has been weakening the team more than strengthening. 😯

  9. Sharpy, nah, he wouldn’t have been my choice. And sure, he did himself no favours to start out with. Still, no reason to vilify the guy coz I don’t like him.

  10. A lot of what is written about what he said has been twisted to give a negative interpretation.

  11. Dave – I understand what you’re saying mate, but if you look at it the other way. You’re annoyed coz JFK called a ‘section’ of toon fans thick and didnt know any about football – or something along those lines. That’s ONE bloke not directly insulting your, but JFK had probably THOUSANDS of people directly insulting him and probably saying a lot worse than he’s thick. Did we really expect him to take it on the chin and not react at all?!
When he first came in the media without doubt were trying to stir things up and create or widen any existing rifts.

I can’t say I particularly like the bloke, but then I didn’t like DL either – but I know that I can’t bloody stand MA!. 😆

      (Quote)

  12. DAVE@15 your dead right mate 😉 one,two three deals does not wipe out the insults he has thrown out imo

      (Quote)

  13. Yeah, while some of the abuse has probably been OTT JFK didn’t do himself any favours whatsoever in the way he acted BEFORE his confirmed appointment and then giving himself a holiday, although I expect that was organised by Ashley to keep him away from making things worse and giving him some time away from the press who probably would have flared him into calling them all c*nts again.

Anyway back on topic, Gomis doesn’t seem the be all end all but he can give us strength, Remy has some pace and trickery and Cisse has the instinct, hopefully we’ll have some good options up top. I would still go after him as I’d prefer him over Bent, but I don’t think it will happen. I think Ice said yesterday about how if he sacked the agent he’d owe him a shedload and the agent is obviously waiting to arrange the free transfer in Jan for next summer. 😕

Can we just nab Guidetti and Sinclair from City?

      (Quote)

  14. There can be no mis interpretation when it said live on air.
Sharpy yeah I can see where your coming from but he is our DOF and shouldnt be getting involved with that or his foul mouth rants.
If it was ok for him to hit back then we would have all footie chairmen etc abusing their fans all the time, as they all get dogs abuse but you dont hear any of them , because they know its part and parcel so they rise above it

      (Quote)

  15. Sharpy-I agree with that mate. To be honest, given the blog evidence, I would say Kinnear was probably right about a huge section of Toon fans not knowing F all about footie.

Obviously he doesn’t check this site out much though, or my posts in particular 😉

  16. My preferred formation would be 4-3-1-2:

    —————— Krul ——————-
    Debuchy – Colo – Mapou – Santon
    —- Sissoko — Cabaye — Anita —-
    ————– Ben Arfa —————-
    ——— Cisse —– Remy ———-

That would be with the view of 2 of those 3 midfielders being able to push forward when were on the attack, most likely Sissoko and Anita and Debuchy and Santon getting forward on the attack as well.
But if we are defending then those 3 could also provide good cover for our defence as well.
It’s the diamond formation in a way that would cover both offence and defence.

  19. Sharpy-Would go for that as well, although can’t decide whether it would be better to have Remy alongside Benny or alongside Cisse yet, will take a few matches before we can see how well they read each other. Hopefully that’s pretty much what Pards will play… 😕

  20. I’m usually one to be optimistic to the point of naivity about people – but for me JFK has already done more damage than he could ever fix. Right from his original rant a few years back, followed by that stupid interview when he pre-announced himself and babbled utter bollocks, he’s shown that he’s just not cut out for any job like this.

I also cannot believe that someone so incoherent can be any good at nogotiations, which is all about listening, considering your responses and keeping your cards close to your chest. He’s obviously not that type – the opposite in fact.

There’s no way to know for sure, but given how far we are into the window, with one – fairly expensive – loan deal to show for it, that someone with more aptitude and experience would have us in a much better position by now?

Sorry, but I think Ashley will start to realise he’s made a mistake and JFK will be out before long. I hope so. Sorry, Joe.

If you put yourself in the public eye then you have to be prepared for the mob to bay for your blood at times, the best thing is to just ignore it and do your job… fans are fickle as fook so a couple of decent signings and they move on to slate someone else. You do not start slagging them off and getting into an argument with them – thats the issue with JFK, he’s like the pissed little bloke trying to fight everyone in the pub

      (Quote)

  22. well most of us know it doesnt matter who comes in pardew will soon knock them down to his level 🙁

  23. Dave – I agree that when you put yourself in such a position as DoF and willingly rant to the media then you have to expect a certain level of abuse back – and I’m fairly sure that JFK has learned to live with being abused . But it’s the level of or nature of abuse at times that I think prompts he’s retorts.
I have never read anything that I would say has crossed the line on this site – but elsewhere I have read death threats, people wishing he was dead and people bringing his family into their insults and things like that – same with Ashley.
Now as much as I dislike them both, to me that’s going way too far, and doesn’t surprise me that he comes back with some of the things he has.
At the end of the day it’s just a game, and he’s just a bloke trying to do a job. He didnt directly call me or you thick or whatever insult it may be – but even if he did, my folks always used to tell me “sticks and stones…

  24. Sometimes I amaze myself. Last night I started to seriously consider the what ifs of Pardew being sacked. The amazement is that I really think mad Joe would be a better manager than Pards.

However I’d much prefer if they both would just f*ck off out of Newcastle.

  25. Newkie – I was told on here a few days ago that JFKs son died of cancer last year. His holiday was with his daughter in law and his granddaughter and it was arranged before he took the job.
Formation wise I’d give Benny the freedom to find where he’d cause must damage – similar to how Spurs played Bale last season.

    Stu – who’s the 6?

Harper, Simpson, Abeid, Ferguson, Tavernier and Perch.

Only Remy in so we have a much smaller squad than last season and we nearly got relegated if anyone remembers.

      (Quote)

  28. stuart79 Remy seems a bit injury prone for QPR last season. He may have played better in France because it’s a less physical league. I’m still not convinced and will judge him on results, instead of hype ? Ashley got rid of Simpson, Perch, Abied to cover Remys wages next season. I don’t think he will get Gomis, Bent or anyone else for that matter or Sinclaire. Lets face it we are stuck with what we have ?

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy-if that’s true then can’t really argue with that mate. I know what you mean about OTT death threat style too, like when Simmo took a throw in at Arsenal and “single handedly lost us the game” and he got those twitter death threats. It’s a joke really. I’m sure on other sites some of the people moaning about losing the guy were the same ones saying he was completely ***** anyway.

  30. Georgia @33,
I dared suggest the same to Troy last week ! He murdered me for dare suggesting that JFK would select a better team than the “FOOL”.

      (Quote)

  31. Stu – so that’s 3 – Simpson, Perch and Harper – and only Simpson and Perch would be seen as first team fringe players, playing infrequently. Elliott replaced Harper who was unlikely to play for us again.
Tav, Fergie and Abied haven’t ‘left’, they are on loan – and are reserve team players. They have been sent on loan to try and develop them rather them playing less competitive reserve team footy.
Of the 6 you list, there’s probably only Simpson we need cover for as Bigi will take Perchs place.

At most I think we maybe need another CF, RB cover and wide midfielder. If we could get those then I think we’d have a very strong squad.
But to be honest, if we could get another CF in then I think we’d have enough to see us through til Jan.

  32. It’s a poor situation when we all think we’ve a good squad but don’t trust the manager to do the right thing.

  33. Sadly, I think people are right when they say it’ll only take a couple of good signings and all will be forgiven.
For me it doesn’t matter what he does now – he could get Messi in for a fiver and a packet of pork scratchings, and JFK will still be the reason people take the **** at every opportunity, and he’ll still be the DoF in charge of a window where we are still the only PL team not to buy a 1st team player.
Whichver way you look at him, he’s completely failed already.
Let’s face it, if you’re in a situation where the mackems have got a window-licking nazi as their manager it takes some serious talent to end up being the **** of the jokes instead of them.

They were all involved the first team squad last year. Whatever way you look at it – we have a smaller squad with less options than last year.

      (Quote)

  36. I’m not that worried about Pardew. He’s still the same manager that did the best job in the country two seasons back, and this season is a lot more similar to that than the last in that we don’t have the Euro **** to think about. On top of that we have several Frenchmen fighting for a place in the worlds next year – they all want a part in the massive surrenderfest! 😮
More importantly, I like the fact that Pards has openly admitted mistakes and seems to be doing something about it. The Euro excuse is a genuine one, and the ones about selection and formation he’s put his hands up to. That doesn’t mean I’m convinced he’ll return to being brilliant, but it does mean I’m not so worried about him as having a badger-poking, name-mangling ***** representing the club.

  39. Night out on the lash with JFK would be great as long as he didn’t keel over after a few…

On Pardew I agree. The one thing that I am looking forward to see is how our play evolves. He has admitted he was hurt by the accusation of long ball last season and has worked on ball retention this pre season and I hope to see a more patient passing style this season.

      (Quote)

  40. Dont particularly rate Gomis but he is exactly what we need. A huge improvement on Ameobi.

Big strong strikers have been doing well in the EPL and I think he might.

    Get the lad in …..

  41. In that case, Stuart, to apply your logic consistently, we now have Dummett to call on. And Sameobi is back from loan, and Vuckic is fit (at least for a week or two). And isn’t Inman back from loan (is he still at the club?)? Anybody else? Curtis Good?

      (Quote)

  42. Whumpie that surrenderfest – you’ll get done for racism. And you think Pardew can return to being brilliant? You must be sharing Joe’s planet. Still I wouldn’t mind meeting you and Joe for a pint as long as we could sell tickets!

      (Quote)

  43. Tony – JFK got slated for mispronunciation of people’s names mate – just saying 😆

Stu – the fact is you’re only allowed to name a 25 man squad. Yes you can use the young uns as freely as you like, but if they aren’t gonna play very often I’d sooner see them go out on loan and play competitively than make little to no progress in the reserves.
Yes we’ve lost Perch, but that will make way for Bigi or maybe Pardew reckons Anita is now ready for the first team more regularly. I actually think Perch knew he was a bit part player who was only gonna play less than more. Midfield we have more than enough with Cabaye, Sissoko, Tiote, Anita, Jonas, Bigi and of course there has been talk of McCarthy.
Harper – like I say, Elliott stepped up and took his place. But also Harper leaving has made way for Alnwick to move up, and that’s exactly what I want to see happen at the club. But there have also been links with De Zoet.
Simpson – wasn’t gonna get his new contract and was gonna be second choice to Debuchy when he came in anyway. I think we need cover but going into the season we have Raylor coming back and Santon and Anita who can fill in there. There have also been links with Bardsley 😯 god I hope not!.

As it stands I reckon we have 22 of the 25 man squad we have to name, so with a CF, wideman and RB we’d be sorted.

But where we can, I think we have to get as many of our young uns out on loan to develop them and see if they have what it takes to make that step up.

      (Quote)

  44. I thought Perch and Simmo could still do a job for us, but that’s about it. I’d rather see our others-Bigi, Anita, Tav get more game time in those spots. Same as Haidara and Santon. Remy in, for me, makes us a bit stronger, as he actually improves our first 11 which none of the players who left ever did.

A night on the lash with Joe would be sweet, but personally I’d rather he remained sober while I took some acid, because that way we’d both end up in the magical universe where all his stories were real 😉

      (Quote)

  45. Stm – it’s not surrender we have to worry about, it’s in-fighting in the squad and huff taking. They’ve always been good at that.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7_ygd9k24w

    😆

Personally, it’s not so much the nationality but the personality we have to worry about. So far we have players who are either capable of both shirking and leaving a foot in, and as much as I like Cabaye he really can be quite nasty when he doesn’t get his way. It’s different to Tiote who’s clearly just insane, cabs is a bit more calculated. Debuchy seems petulent, HBA can be accused of shirking. MYM doesn’t make me believe he’s captain material, but I put his poor performances at CB down to language/playing alongside Taylor.

Goof and Sissoko seem dependable on an effort/motivational level though.

  53. Georgio – yeah I believe it is 8 home grown players, so we’d be fine for our quota at the moment but with all the English players we’ve let go we will need to either change our recruitment – which I think is in their minds as Mick Harford was wanted to oversee our loan players and find talent on these shores. I’m sure they will look to get someone else in for that role.
Personally I’d be looking at players like Kyle Naughton, Jake Livermore and Andros Townsend at Spurs along with the likes of McCarthy, Ince and Sinclair. I reckon the Spurs trio could be got for around £7-8m.
Alternatively, we bring our young uns through, but how many are actually good enough to make the first team?.

  55. In my opinion JFK is as tactically inept as Pardew!. He may come in and change the formation from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 but the fact is we have no wingers to play that formation either.
They have a favoured formation that they both would try and fit the players into rather than finding the formation that best fits the players we have.
If we are getting rid of Pardew we HAVE to replace him with someone who can get the absolute most out of what is (on paper) a very strong group of players.
