Morecambe v Newcastle – League Cup match preview

The Shrimps v The Magpies
The Shrimps v The Magpies
Newcastle kick-off their League Cup campaign with a trip to Morecambe this evening looking to record their first competitive win of the season.

The venue will be the 6,400 capacity Globe Arena and it’s been confirmed that United have sold their entire allocation of 1,800 tickets so a good atmosphere should be ensured. Hopefully with a good result for us in the end to boot!

Cup campaigns have been awful for us for years and we’ve seen ourselves fall at early hurdles far too often for my liking. No doubt eyes will be on another upset tomorrow evening as the TV cameras roll up in Morecambe looking for some “giant killing” fun.

Of course it’s no “fun” for us having to go through it all again, but it’s a cup and we should be going for it. There is no excuse of the Europa League this term and we’ve seen teams like Swansea win it so why can’t we? That shows it doesn’t have to be dominated by the bigger clubs. Why can’t this be our year?

Newcastle:

Yohan Cabaye will not be involved as he continues his absence from the first-team. Loic Remy will not be be risked until Saturday at the earliest whilst Steven Taylor serves the second of his three match ban following his sending off against Manchester City. Jonas Gutierrez and Massadio Haidara are both sidelined whilst the availability of Mike Williamson, Gabriel Obertan and Cheik Tiote are unconfirmed.

Loan players such as Mehdi Abeid, Adam Campbell and Shane Ferguson will obviously not be available, but fringe players like Gael Bigirimana and Dan Gosling could be involved along with players who have, as yet, not featured as much as they may have liked such as Sylvain Marveaux and Vurnon Anita.

Morecambe:

Andrew Wright returns from suspension while Barry Roche, Kevin Ellison and Marcus Marshall, who returned at the weekend, are expected to play. Andreas Arestidou, Morecambe’s second choice goalkeeper, was once on the books with United.

Previously…

This is the first meeting between the two sides so there is no previous to write about so to speak.

What I can say is that we’ve progressed in our last 12 second round ties in this competition, with our last exit coming in 1990 at the hands of Middlesbrough.

Match stats and facts…

No player created more chances for his team in the first round than Morecambe’s Ryan Williams (four) in his side’s victory over Wolves.

Newcastle have played their last six League Cup ties away from home.

Final thought…

We must win this game. Alan Pardew was right in his pre-match blathering when he said Morecambe are in a no lose situation. We are the ones that are expected to win here. The problem is that we’ve struggled to do that against lower league teams. Wit the greatest of respects to Morecambe we should be overcoming this comfortably but football doesn’t work like that.

We need to make sure it does and those eleven on the pitch need to ensure that they are suitably up for it. It’s the managers job to do just that, but it’s also the responsibility of the players to carry that through. For once, and rather stupidly with no foundation behind it, I’m actually surprisingly confident…

Howay the lads!

  1. Cheers Toonsy…It’s always “our year”…until we get knocked out that is 😉

A 0-6 win, with a performance full of the attacking flair and tactical nous that Pard’s and his teams are famous for 😯 🙄 😆
…or maybe I’d just settle for a scrappy 1 nowt win, a decent performance and cracking game with both teams going for it would be nice though 😐

  2. RICHIE not woke up yet mate think your still dreaming 😥 long time since we had a cup run, would be nice but this is the toon 🙁
by the way the the lad has put a motor on his dish gets more progs now, worth the 100e extra to get it fitted 😉

  3. 😕 I m realy realy afraid about what is happening this evening…
Our team develloped a strong football and a tactical for a hope a decent win… 😥
If we cannot score easaly we going for a shame scenario… ❗
Football of little team even even.. reveled the true of a team s troubles.. 😕
If they re most hungry than us…we cannnot still support pardew again…enougth is enougth ❗
    Yes…i m afraid of this game…. 👿

  4. Ice…Yeah looked into that, but with the Al Jaz I get all the league games anyway so there was no need and for British tv it’s not worth spending any cash yet because they’re launching new sats so even 3m+ dishes might not be enough for a signal here, so just gonna wait before splashing the cash, I just download any series that I want to watch at the moment….cough cough, or that’s what I would do if it was legal 😆

  5. I’m not overly bothered about turning Morecombe over by 4 or 5 goals. A 0-2 convincing win would do me. Dominate the play and build some confidence.
The problem with games like this though is that players like Marv, Vukic, Gosling and Obertan all know that regardless how well they play tonight they will be dropped again next week for players not in form – so why give 100%?!.

  6. SSN ,Toon back in talks with Gomis 🙄 ,would of preferred an hijack of Cardiffs Finbogasson deal .Why are we wasting time on a guy who wants to go to OM anyway.

      (Quote)

  7. Please relax everyone… I have a good feeling about this game and you know what happens when I get my good feels about games 😉

  8. We don’t have a great cup record against lower league sides do we? Why Pardew continues to pick the reserve side I have no idea. We would like to win something and this is our best chance!

      (Quote)

  9. Kim – I read this morning that Gomis wants a move to Germany. I don’t think he has a preference to be honest, he’ll go to whichever club agrees to pay ALL his agents.
I’d prefer Finnbogason as well in all honestly £8.6m I read again this morning.

That said, I’d welcome Gomis all the same coz we desperately need something up there. I think this kid is good pals with Sissoko was well so should settle in pretty quickly.
Still think we need a wide man as well though. Ince, Thauvin or my preferred choice would be Sigurdsson from Spurs – but we’ve never even been linked with him. But I think he’ll fall down the list when Spurs spend their Bale money.

SSN reporting that Chelsea are about to offer Porto £3m for this kid who’s out of contract next summer. As left side of midfield is an area that we really need to strengthen – why the hell are we not going for this bargain buy?????

But, if Chelsea get this lad where would that leave Victor Moses – who I also think could improve things for us down the left.

      (Quote)

  11. Kim – I think we’re gonna get linked with every sod this window.
Didn’t Nile Ranger score last neet?, he’ll be next on our incoming list I bet 😆

      (Quote)

  12. Ice ,I’m not even angry anymore it’s actually starting to amuse me watching various news outlets and ITK’s twisting themselves in knots. The wise amongst us have all but accepted that we likely won’t get anyone ‘over that line ‘ all the same it’s amazing to see the various stories popping up ,it’s like a frenzy of bullshit 😉 .

      (Quote)

  13. I could well believe we are enquiring about Ba, SSN don’t generally report on rumours.
Also it’s about the extent of our vision in this window. Remy, a player who we tried to sign in Jan. Then Ba, a player we sold in Jan.
A whole world of football and players and we’ve signed a player on loan we couldn’t sign 6mth ago and a player we sold 6mth ago.

True vision and remarkable scouting!. You’re right Kim, this is laughable now like and Graham Carr must be ready to wrap in now like.

      (Quote)

  14. So we’re in for demba and gomis we need someone in sharpish, faking leaving it this late is madness but nowt new with this lot.

      (Quote)

  15. This club has gone so down hill without Ba it’s unreal. Demba or Remy it’s a no brainer for me. Feed the sheep and he’ll score. Getting excited thinking of him helping toon again, really excited. Joe don’t **** this up, I beg you

      (Quote)

  16. Stem – it’s a loan deal mate. A quick fix and I fail to see what there is to get that excited about to be perfectly honest. We will have made 2 loan signing this summer – it’s hardly outstanding that like.

      (Quote)

  17. A loan deal is better than spending 17 million on another Owen. I would rather have Ba back permanently mate. This summer has been so dire I get excited about having Ba back ? He is a proven goal scorer and we lack options at the moment.

      (Quote)

  18. It’s no out standing imo. I can still see Joe screwing up tbh. Lets just hope it leads to a deal in january

      (Quote)

  19. Only for one season he is mate, coz even if there’s an option to buy, we won’t afford his wages again – same as Remy.
We are a club who once signed Shearer, Ferdinand, Ginola, Tino, Woodgate – some of the best players around at the time.
We bought players like Cole and Lee and turned them into truely quality players.

This regime has left you excited about loaning a player who 6mths ago was already on our books and playing regularly. But instead of ripping up a contract with a buy out clause to stay with us, decided instead to leave for Chelsea – knowing that despite getting paid more, he’d spend most of his time sat on a bench or not even making the squad.

You ask Demba or Cabaye – I don’t see a difference to be honest. Cabaye will leave for Arsenal or PSG and get paid more for sitting on their bench.

      (Quote)

  20. Stem – I wouldn’t want another £17m on an Owen.
But £8m for Finnbogason, £8m for Tom Ince £10m for Ayew would be better option IMO mate coz like I say, as good as Ba may be, it’s a short term fix.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy ,Got to agree mate ,we want our own players not someone else cast offs or damaged goods (Remy) .

  23. it just shows what a pack of bullshit the club feed us,was only last season the club said that loan deals are not for us as it did not make financial sense to the club to waste money on loan deals,i give up with this set of clowns ffs

      (Quote)

  24. I know no one wants another Owen that’s just the worst that could happen. The only reason im excited about Ba is cause he can score and I get worried we end up with nowt. Ashley saving a few bucks, paying himself back and hopefully leaves for what he paid. I know people want there own players but at the price of Ashley gone ?

      (Quote)

  25. Gomis could he handle the premiership ? We do need a striker and a winger and we only have till monday. Everyone panic

      (Quote)

  26. Ba does not want to come back to toon he only wants to go to another team playing in CL,plus do we really need to spend that amount of money to those money grapping agents he has in toe,no thank you imo

  28. We should have paid Ba the 20-30k he wanted in the first place and signed him to a real contractwhere we would have kept him or at least have made 20 mil selling him to Chelsea which we could have reinvested into a real replacement. No real point going back in for him unless we sell Cisse because Cisse can’t play with him (not sure who he can play with yet) and we’ll be stuck with him on the bench or playing with 10 men as we carry him like we did last year.

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy-there’s only 11 there pal! the / signifies where I can’t pick between who would start. Although I agree it would be awfully sporting of Morecombe if they could make this tie a bit easier for us, they’d still probably embarrass us as it is 😥

    At least it’s not Brighton I suppose… 🙄

      (Quote)

  30. Newkie @44,I honestly don’t think the extra wages would of mad a jot of difference mate as he wanted away for CL footie like.

      (Quote)

  31. Well if we get stuffed tonight ,I have a ready made excuse ready for the Fool. Seaside towns have something in the water that effects us 😉

      (Quote)

  32. If only Ashley offered him more wages and showed a little more ambition in the summer on signings. We have lost Nolan, Ba, Enrique, Barton, Milner, Bassong, Carole, Given, Martin, Duff, Best, Lovenkrands, Beye and replaced them

      (Quote)

  33. Kim-it would have if we’d offered it before Jan like. I imagine we could have got away with it in the summer or early season days, when he had just had poor form and wouldn’t have been in such a strong position to demand CL footie, plus we might have even looked like fighting for it in those days as we finished above chelsea the year before 😯 😆 -also Chelsea showed no interest or need at that point.

But naturally llambias or whoever let the contract run, shocking decision even allowing that clause in the first place.

      (Quote)

  34. Get braced for humiliation tonight lads and lasses.

We haven’t looked like scoring for months – even with Cabaye.

Win lose or draw I do expect a good game from Sammy, got a feeling he is going to pleasantly surprise everybody this season. He should be a starter in this current squad.

Anyone else feel like the 1st team should play and try to build some confidence up?

      (Quote)

  35. “Get braced for humiliation tonight lads and lasses”. – is my gut feeling about tonights game. Hope I’m wrong.

Big words from AP. but we all know they are empty coz even if Sammy puts in the performance of a lifetime and bags himself a hat-trick, does anyone believe that Pards would leave Sammy in when the likes of Jonas and Tiote are back?. I know I don’t!.
Which is my next point – how ***** was Tiote and Jonas last season along with others to be fair, and how many were dropped or have been replaced since?!.
Pardew trying to be billy big bollocks again – ******!.

      (Quote)

  37. Be nice if we did win tonight, and lets face it we should but this is Newcastle and we should expect the unexpected, like getting turned over by a smaller club such as Morcambe, after all this team only cost millions in transfer fees and millions in wages, only thing we could not buy is any kind of commitment or heart.Want us to win of course but im not that confident at all,nor am I confident we will get anyone in before the window slams shut so im organising a “Transfer Excuses Party” to cheer myself up.It really is time for our prudent owner to do one in my opinion as im sick of the lack of any communication or desire to become the great club we once were.

      (Quote)

  38. I’m not intrested in anything Pardew has to say, anymore. Him and Kinnear would do wonders for the conservative party

      (Quote)

  39. Bigpapa-I would defo play Cisse for goals/confidence, Debuchy for PRACTICE, Anita because he will need to fill the hole cabage leaves. Also liked the look of Sammy and he should start. Some of the first teamers already look confident and are assured of starts-those being Santon and Krul for me. Play Marv, goof etc for goals, bigi for experience, Mbiwa and Colo because they need to learn each other’s games-Staylor shouldn’t even make it to the bench from now on 😉

      (Quote)

  40. I thought I saw a report that Colo is being rested and Mbiwa is captain.

    Ba back? Why not?

But of the likely castaways from Chelsea, I’d rather have Mata since it’s our supply lines & creativity that are utterly broken or artificially shut down by Pardew’s tactics.

Pipe dreaming, I know, but let me dream, people, let me dream.

      (Quote)

  41. Also, on the latest evidence, I really wish we’d resigned Simpson at the very least to keep Debuchy looking over his shoulder or maybe even, at this point, ahead of him. Debuchy looked absolutely wretched in the last few games. I hope he turns around, but, wow, what an awful few showings he’s made…

      (Quote)

  42. FSOTC-Could be right mate, not seen the line up I was just saying who I’d play.

Mata-don’t we all fookin wish! I’d drive Cabaye to Arsenal and Mata to Newcastle today if we could make that happen.

I’d have to buy myself a car first but I’d fucking do it. 😆

      (Quote)

  43. If buying the car to drive Mata to Newcastle is ever part of a potential deal, you can count on me for $100 to pitch in, Newkie.

      (Quote)

  44. Like Parsnip has said, it’s about time some of the ‘kids’ stepped up to the plate and put in a performance against a League 2 side. If they can’t even do that then what’s the point of them being at a Premier League side?

      (Quote)

  45. It’s no contest. Even with the weakest team we could possibly field we should easily beat Morecambe.

More important is how we play. A Premier League manager should be good enough to get his team playing attractive fast flowing football against Morecambe. Otherwise i might as well be manager tonight (and pick up the salary too).

      (Quote)

  46. Reporter David Craig has told Sky Sports News Radio that sources close to Tom Ince have told him that Aston Villa and Everton have entered into discussions with Blackpool for his signature.

      (Quote)

  47. I’m conflicted. I want NUFC to win but…..if we lose it would help get rid of Pardew.

    It’s a feeling no fan should…….feel.

      (Quote)

  48. KK
Don’t be stupid, of course we ALL want Newcastle to win. Winning (even against lower league opposition) will boost confidence and establish momentum. Pardew isn’t as ***** a manager as many seem to think, once we have a few wins in the bag the players will get into their groove and bring about a winning mentality.

      (Quote)

  49. You’re right Mark. You can’t possibly want the team to lose when you’re watching them!

I feel like a hostage held by the belligerent trio.

      (Quote)

  50. Andymag – without any bias at all, Pardew really is the worst manager we’ve had since the start of the Premier League.

    Seriously. It’s true.

    Worse than:
    Roeder
    Souness
    Dalglish
    Gullit

      (Quote)

  51. @DJG,What makes you think the kids should be responsible for our ***** play? If the first team are a load of ***** why should bits of kids have to step in and bail them out? Beats me why we have up and coming talent as it must be soul destroying to see your manager buying players that are always ahead of you because they cost the earth and come as supposedly proven players, its a convenient way to blame bad results on a team of developing players. The kids are not exactly pulling up trees are they? When was the last time one cracked the first team as a regular?
