Newcastle v Fulham – Premier League match preview

Magpies v Cottagers
Magpies v Cottagers
Fresh from tasting victory for the first time this season against Morecambe on Wednesday, Newcastle must now focus their attention back to the Premier League.

The visitors this weekend are Fulham and United will be looking to build on the 0-0 home draw with West Ham last weekend by taking all three points against the Cottagers.

Our league for has been atrocious reaching back into last season so a result is needed even at this early stage of the season. We’ve not scored a Premier League goal in five attempts and in truth we could still have been playing against West Ham now and we probably wouldn’t have managed to find the back of the net. We lack bite in attack, but perhaps a midweek win might just be enough to get some belief and confidence trickling through to the players.

Newcastle:

Loic Remy could feature from the bench and make his Premier League debut for us, but it’s the talk of another Frenchman that is dominating the headlines. Yohan Cabaye has reportedly been told to be prepared to play after refusing to play/being left out since the start of the season in the wake of transfer interest from Arsenal.

Steven Taylor completes the final game of his three match ban picked up for his red card on the opening day of the season although Jonas Gutierrez, Cheick Tiote and Massadio Haidara are sidelined along with Ryan Taylor. Mike Williamson and Gabriel Obertan have not been reported as being injured although their absence from any squad so far this season would suggest that they are.

Having made eight changes in midweek we are likely to revert to our regular side for this game which will mean recalls for Fabricio Coloccini, Papiss Cisse, Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa and Tim Krul among others.

Fulham:

Kieran Richardson, Maarten Stekelenburg and Fernando Amorebieta will not travel with the squad due to injury but otherwise Martin Jol has a full squad to choose from.

Previously…

Newcastle managed to beat Fulham towards the tail end of last season with Papiss Cisse scoring a winner in stoppage time. In terms of the Premier League at St James’ Park we don’t have such a bad record having won five of the eleven times the two sides have faced each other here in the North-East. Three draws and three defeats make up the eleven matches.

However overall, home and away in all competitions it is Fulham who hold the advantage. In total there have been 60 meetings between the two sides with Fulham winning in 26 of those compared to 21 for United.

Stats and facts:

The three previous league meetings between these sides in the month of August have produced 19 goals – an average of over six per game.

The Magpies have managed only one shot on target in total in the Premier League this season; fewer than any other side.

Alan Pardew has used only two English players so far in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side.

Final thought:

Quite simply we need a win and it must come at any cost. Fulham will be tough to beat and present a threat to us in attack so we need to be careful whilst at least trying to pose an attacking threat of our own. Suffice to say, despite registering a win the other night, I’m not confident again.

Howay the lads!

  1. As a Newcastle fan I think I’ve every right to say what I’m about to say but a lot of people will not want to hear it or brush it off as ****.

Newcastle united are undoubtably a sleeping giant, albeit an induced coma by our current dictator and we only have ourselves to blame. What happened to the days of old when we treated this as our club our players our stadium? In January of 1995 Andrew Cole was sold and as fans we didn’t want that to happen nor where we about to put up with it. Our men probably a lot of the fathers of people who read this blog now let themselves be heard. We where not going to sit by and watch someone sell our best players to turn a few quid over. We demanded answers!
Now what has happened? Mike Ashley has swaged his way into town sold countless stars, plastered his cheap shop logo everywhere, got a once champions league and title contending team relegated, changed the stadium name, degraded us by letting his director of football call us stupid, made us a laughing stock… I could go on all day. We don’t get a word of explanation from our owner and we have sat down and done nothing about it. Shame on us.

I read all the time that our players aren’t giving 100%, are our fans giving 100%? They certainly did 18 years ago when someone was messing with our club! I hear in a daily basis how disgusted we are by they way we’ve been treated and I don’t understand why we do nothing. Is it because we are slowly being ground down and giving up? Are we not as passionate as the men in 95? Is it the Internet, does going on twitter let off enough steam? I’ve no doubt that we had the best support in the premier league and I’m baffled why we are letting this man ruin our club. What does Mike Ashley own? We pay the bills, how far would he get without us? I’m sure he isn’t a great fan of the songs we sing about him but the bottom line is he’s a business man and the stadium is still packed. Our support just like the team isn’t what it used to be. We’ve got a mid table team and mid table support.

Our club was here long before Mike Ashley and it will be here and better off when he’s gone. It is our club not some mute plastic supporter who’s only interest is promoting his sportswear shop on every advertising hoarding which I seriously doubt we get paid for.

So the next time you think of having a go on twitter as yourself what are you doing about it? It’s your club.

  2. Thanks Toonsy , Well based on what I’ve seen of us so far this will be yet another loss I think . It should be a very winnable home game but not the way we are at the present time. Another thing too ,re- Remy ,I really do hope his injury is cleared up properly it seems a lot sooner than was originally stated he’d be back .We do tend to bring players back too soon only to see them break down again ,I would of waited another week and bring him in for Villa which will be a much tougher prospect imo.

      (Quote)

  3. Kim – Pardew has said he’s only got 10 mins max in him. So yeah, he’s still injured. Shouldn’t even be on the bench. Desperate times.

      (Quote)

  4. David ,Trouble is fans love the game /team so won’t stay away ,not by the shirt and so on . As for protesting outside the club like in the past ,yes I remember that and KK having to calm folk down over Andy Cole ,the difference is you had an owner and manager who communicated with the fans then even if the decisions weren’t popular .With Ashley it’s water off a ducks back he don’t give a flying **** what we think /do as he’s a ruthless **** and any fan backlash will just put him back into spoilt child mode where he seeks a way to pour more vengeance on us. Remember the appointment of JFK was done whilst apparently in a good mood ,what would he do to try and really **** us off . It’s pointless we can’t win with this **** so why bother trying, I take solace in the fact that he won’t live for ever and won’t own us for ever and hopefully won’t do too much damage before he departs the club. By the way this is the first season I have not brought a shirt as I refuse to line the twats pocket or advertise that *****.

  5. Georgio ,What ffs ,what’s the point ,just leave the guy out ,I really get angry about this sort of incompetence. Makes me wonder if he wants him crocked so he can play his fav /preferred players. 👿

      (Quote)

  6. Georgio 🙄 very true ,sorry mate I can’t even raise a wry smile at the mo I’m that hacked off .

      (Quote)

  7. does it look like we’ll make a signing? I dont think so.

Pretty embarrassing for Pardew after all hes begged for reinforcements. its enough to make other managers walk.

I can sympathise with Cabs too if we dont secure any players, he was promised the world and games in Europe but instead hes fighting relegation..

      (Quote)

  8. Mark ,here ,here.

So Arsenal table an insulting bid ,unsettle our player then back off leaving us to clear up the mess, what a bunch of ****@.

      (Quote)

  9. @KIMTOON

tbh I think the Toon are leaders when it comes to unsettling players. look at Miaga last season, he stopped playing and we walked away 😆 there have been others too..

      (Quote)

  10. I see Adam Campbell has returned from his loan spell at Carlisle. Let me guess…”like a new signing”

      (Quote)

  11. Comments not loading? Kimtoon, a simple dignified protest would be enough. Standing with backs to the pitch before kick off would get media attention.

      (Quote)

  12. Kim – have they really made a bid? Pards rates him as world class but does anybody else? They’ve resigned Flamini too. We’re stuck with him and his sulkiness. I wouldn’t even play him for a few weeks.

      (Quote)

  13. For anybody that thinks our squad is not good enough to challenge for a top 6 place and that we should be grateful to Pardew…….

These are the current squad values for Premier League teams.

    Chelsea FC – £455m
    Manchester City – £415m
    Manchester United – £345m
    Tottenham Hotspur – £310m
    Arsenal FC – £260m
    Liverpool FC – £225m
    Newcastle United – £150m
    Everton FC – £140m
    Swansea City – £105m
    Southampton FC – £96m
    Aston Villa – £92.5m
    Sunderland AFC – £89m
    Stoke City – £87m
    West Ham United – £84.5m
    Fulham FC – £83.5m
    Norwich City – £75.5m
    West Bromwich Albion – £71.5m
    Cardiff City – £53m
    Hull City – £48m
    Crystal Palace – £40.5m

  14. DavidE….When Cole was sold there weren’t really that many that confronted Keegan but he had the balls to come out and ask the fans to trust him and they did on the whole, the demo’s against Ashley during the trouble with Keegan were much bigger and much more well organised and vociferous than when Cole was sold and achieved absolutely **** all.
Why? because Ashley really doesn’t give a flying **** about how the fans feel, he doesn’t care about demos, he doesn’t care if fans boycott matches, he already has their cash in season ticket sales and match day revenue is probably small change anyway in the grand scheme of things.
    From Ashley’s point of view:

No protests =The club ticks along nicely and SD is promoted worldwide and he gets very little hassle

Mass Protests = Bad Press but more publicity, the SD brand is on tv and in the news even more, Mike gets a bit more hassle but doesn’t give a **** because the money off the fans is already banked and SD is doing very nicely thankyou with the extra coverage!

      (Quote)

  15. People can try to blame the players because they don’t speak English or because they came from a weaker league but there is no hiding the fact that we should be doing better than we have done.

    What’s wrong with the club?

Is it that we don’t have enough money?
Nope. We are the 20th richest club in the WORLD.

Maybe we don’t have the players?
Nope, no that either. We have the 7th most valuable team in the league.

Maybe we just don’t have a large enough following?
Still no. We have the 3rd largest attendance in the league, 10th highest in europe.

    WTF is wrong?????

      (Quote)

  16. SolanosTrumpet – Why would that link put that website to bed. All of the figures appear reasonable and historically they’ve been pretty much spot on with the values.

Cabaye is rated at £14m. Is there actually anybody that thinks he is currently worth more??

      (Quote)

  17. @KK
It rates Rooney as the second most valuable player in the Premier League.
2.5 x the value of Benteke

      (Quote)

  18. Richie last time there was protests Ashley was actively seeking a new owner for the club. I agree with everything you say but we need to do something. I’ve a 6 year old son and I’m having no luck getting him interested in nufc why the flip would he? Would you start supporting this team??

    I’m open to suggestions

      (Quote)

  19. Can’t believe some people think Cabaye is on strike.

If he was on strike he would have been fined. It’s so obvious he is being protected before the window closes.

If Ashley sells him. He banks 20mil. If he doesn’t. Pardew can tell us how wonderful Ashley was to us for rejecting Arsenal’s bid and keeping our best players.

He may be played tomorrow, but only in one final attempt to put him in the shop window and in the media spot light prior the window closing.

All Pardew has spoken about is Cabaye…. The SALE is on. Pardew is the shitty infomercial salesman. Being giving a script by Ashley.

This club is such a joke.

What player in their right mind would take things seriously and give 100%.

      (Quote)

  20. Solano,

Rooney is valued at twice Benteke because he is English. I’d say the valuations are close to spot on.

      (Quote)

  21. David ,sit your lad down and show him some footage of the entertainers ,tell him how we came second and so nearly won the PL .Show him us demolishing ManU at SJP ,tell him how one day they will be like that again so it’s worth waiting for,and lastly if all else fails threaten to ground him if he dares to support any other riff raff. 😉

      (Quote)

  22. Obviously there are going to be flaws. But then who truly knows the value of a player.

Carroll, Downing and Henderson are worth around 80 million.

      (Quote)

  23. DavidE…Yep but he didn’t sell even though their were buyers there, just as the chances of him selling now are slim to none as the asking price is too high, now he also knows better the benefits to SD of him owning NUFC.

Yep I would start supporting the team now, they’re my hometown team and they were a lot worse when I originally started going, an average(at best) 2nd division team…though I don’t know if I’d inflict it on the bairn, maybe he’d prefer the Falcons? 😉

      (Quote)

  24. @JJ
    Bollocks.
If so, then it shows that subjective valuations are no way to assess a team’s talent.

      (Quote)

  25. Solano,
That all depends on the manager and whether he’s good enough to get the players to play to the best of their ability as a team.

That’s why teams like Morecambe can outplay us. 😉

      (Quote)

  26. I’m not yet resigned to an awful season. We may yet get those 2 extra signings and start to deliver the form our squad suggests it should once it has strikers who know where the net is.

What I still cannot get my head around is why someone would royally ****** his own asset (ooer) by scrapping a respected sponsor and replacing them with a loan shark, and then hiring a DOF (obviously with no warning to the people he would be working with) with no suitable experience or credibility.

Seriously, if you were trying to shaft the club, those two decisions alone would probably be the best way to do it. Some businessman.

      (Quote)

  27. I wonder what odds you’d get on 2 signings and 4 points by midnight Monday….?

Not good. Not good at all.

      (Quote)

  28. Whumpie,Your forgetting the key element mate ,Publicity ,he’s not daft he knew the mass coverage and outrage of the Wonga deal will gain him much more long term sales than anything little old Virgin could do,that’s far too respected and quiet a sponsor for our Mikey. ALL publicity is good as far as he’s concerned and if it pisses off the Toon faithfull so much the better ,he will never forgive a section of fans who made death threats to him .Didn’t someone once post that they had overheard him say “I’m not giving anything to that lot” when speaking of the Toon.

      (Quote)

  29. JJ@33, That’s it in a nutshell mate ,right team wrong manager. If we had Nolan ,Barton ,Carroll the team would fly under Pards ,but he simply doesn’t know what to do with our flair players or that’s how it appears .

      (Quote)

  30. I should’ve mentioned I’m from Belfast ( albeit living in Canada for the next 6 months) but believe me I’m a Geordie at heart lol. My son is called Geordie. This isn’t about him tho its about this man ruining our club. There has to be something we can do. There is such a thing as bad press.

      (Quote)

  31. Kim that sounds about right it’s like he sits and thinks up new ways to annoy us. He is laughing at us.

      (Quote)

  32. With the window closing Monday night think it’s obvious no one in now ,even if Cab did go ,certainly no chance of replacing Ba with quality forward . The owner & JFK have messed about all window like the last 2 or 3 summers in truth ,the truth is if anyone was coming in it would of been done by now .

      (Quote)

  33. No wonder the owner says nothing to the supporters. What would he say? Something like the following? “Yes I am a useless git completely lacking in ambition for the club. That is why I lay low all the time. I’ve filled the ground with SD signs, hired a clown as DoF, kept a manager who is making us increasingly poor to watch, but what can you all do about it? Nothing, since you keep coming to the ground and filling my pockets!!!”

      (Quote)

  34. DavidElder888 – @1 I fully understand and share in your frustration but I’m not sure what that kind of protesting actually achieves nowadays mate.
I keep using them as an example but look at how the Blackburn fans protested against their Indian owners – wearing chicken outfits – and protested get Kean out. It didnt make a bit of difference mate and I think it would have the same impact with our owner and board.
I don’t know what the answer is mate until someone decides they want to buy Ashley out there is little to nowt can be done.

What we need is a team playing attractive football for some mega rich bored billionaire to think – I fancy making them the most successful club in the history of time – however that translates in Russian or Arabic. Then hopefully Ashley will hand over the keys.

  35. I see Joe has stopped ranting. Is it possible he is having some difficulty with his job? Could it be nobody wants to deal with a dinosaur without a clue? Stay tuned until Monday and we should know what Joe’s genius in the transfer market has brought us.

      (Quote)

  36. I’m sure Joe is working frantically behind the scenes to come up with some more excuses for not signing anyone on Tuesday morning. Or possibly he’ll just tell us all to f off again. He’s a football genius you know.

      (Quote)

  37. Does anyone have anything on twitter or any word at all about any possible incomings?.

Can’t believe how quick things have gone, especially when Pardew acknowledges himself that we need a CF and 2 flair players!.
I was half expecting or hoping that things may liven up about but it’s quieter than ever man!.

      (Quote)

  38. What are the bookies giving as odds for Alan winning LMA manager of the year this season? As a former winner he’s surely in contention? And surely Joe is in line for some sort of award as well? I can hardly wait for the winners to be announced. Mike you must be so proud.

      (Quote)

  39. Sharpy@48 ,Not surprised at that at all tbh ,about sums up the contempt which the fans are held in really 🙁

Sharpy@50 I hope your not holding your breath for them signings mate 🙄

      (Quote)

  40. Any thoughts on what the chances are that we’ll actually score against Fulham? I’m thinking 50-50. If we do then we’ll lose 1-3. What are you lot groaning about? That would be a distinct improvement over our attack in the last 4 home games.

      (Quote)

  41. Sharpy some French guy on twitter is claiming we bid 12m for Thauvin but he want to go to Marseille. Take that for what its worth obviously

      (Quote)

  42. Good preview Toonsy as usual, but the way we play I would be happy with a point.
Davidelder888 I agree with a lot of what your saying, I do thing protest etc would work if everyone stood up for our club but their is too many people now a days that will find it easier to just go along with things,
If fans stopped going to the games and ST holders cancelled their tickets it would work, yeah it would hurt the team but The Regime is already ripping the club apart and they dont give a fuk because they don’t care for the club, and as I have said from the KK fiasco Jabba only see’s the club as a giant advertisement hoarding for SD.
As for young fans I understand what you mean my wee Lad is a toon fanatic but it started to affect him when after getting the home and away kit with Carroll 9 on the back with in a couple of months he was sold and he was left with 2 kits that he didn’t want to wear because lots of his friends were Liverpool supporters and would give him stick, he was a big supporter of Joey B so after Joey was sold he was getting another new kit, so I asked him did he want Benny on the back as he likes him, but he said ” Dad whats the point we’ll only sell him then I wont be able to wear my shirt anymore” I can see that he has became disillusioned with the club, and I am sure there is lots of other kids (who are the future of our club) getting that way, and I dont blame them, we have just became a total joke of a club 👿

      (Quote)

  43. Kim – the blokes a **** house rat!. I’ve said before he reminds me of a Dickens villain and if we were to protest outside of St James’ Park!! He’d probably look out of his window down at us laughing that the peasants were revolting again before ordering the hounds to be released.

As for the signings, I had hoped my second guessing of the situation may have been correct.
If we were not getting anyone you know Pardew would have said he was happy with the squad he has and tried to convince himself that we all believed him.
But as he has said they have a plan and like I say, acknowledged that we need a CF and 2 flair players that may suggest signing. I’m not stupid enough to believe we’d sign 3 – but it looks as though I’m stupid enough to believe that we would sign at least one 😳

      (Quote)

  44. Some more words of encouragement from Alan: “You know 18th place isn’t really a bad spot to be in. It gives us a good base to build on and it’s certainly better than 19th or 20th. In fact after we collect our point after this weekend’s draw we’ll have 2 points and I’ll be very pleased indeed. That’s the kind of result I’m looking for at home against a very difficult opponent in Fulham. And wait ’til you see what I have planned for us away from home. Yes you guessed it, it’s our new 8-1-1 away formation! I’m so pleased I came up with it. All in all I’m just very, very pleased with our progress this season.”

      (Quote)

  45. Big Dave
You should have bought him one with Shola on the back, he will be with us forever.
I gave up my season ticket in 2008 , just in time to miss our relegation season. I pity those fans who could not cancel in time for this season.

    G2;
I don’t think we will score against Fulham , especially if Cisse and Shola both start. I’ve gone for 0-2.

      (Quote)

  46. MDS – with a pinch of salt mate. I’ve never rated that one as a realistic signing, and at £12m I bloody hope it doesn’t come off!.

      (Quote)

  47. Difficult to read that about your son Big Dave @55. But supporters stay true to their club through thick and thin. We’ve had a lot of difficult times in the last few years but my thoughts are still with the club I grew up with. I may take the mickey out of Alan, Joe, and Mike but the club belongs to the supporters. I would follow them in any division. If we get relegated and Ashley sells it will be like a breath of fresh air to me after the behavior of our owner and his flunkies.

      (Quote)

  48. You could well be right sidekick @59 mate. It will probably take some individual genius from Ben Arfa for us to score. MDS @54 I read those rumours as well, mate. I don’t believe them for a minute. Ashley will not spend 12M this window unless he gets 20M for Cabaye.

      (Quote)

  49. I remember a question on here over a year ago, perhaps 15 mths or so. It was would you swap what we’ve got (at the time, steady team building, reducing the debts) for a rich Arab…

I know which I would choose now..

1-1 for me 2moro.. Pardew happy with the commitment we showed esp as we had tired legs v Morecambe 🙄

      (Quote)

  50. I wonder if Pardew will be sacked if we don’t score against Fulham? That would be 5 home games in a row without us scoring. Surely it can’t continue? Maybe I should be asking if we’ll get a shot on goal?

      (Quote)

  51. Even if we do start to grind out 1-0 wins, and start moving up the league, I honestly don’t believe that the ground swell of disdain for Ashley, Pardew and Kinnear will improve one jot. There is such a huge negative ground swell against these three jokers, that things can only go awry. Pardew must have skin as thick as a rhino, but it obviously seems to getting through to him. We’re on a slippery slope, and the bloke is out of his depth.
Another manager falls to the pressure in the goldfish bowl.

Cut out the bullshit Pardew and treat the fans with respect. All this stuff about bigging up Cabaye, Shola, Debuchy etc is all painfully ridiculous. The man is a fool.

      (Quote)

  52. Spot on Munich @69. Pardew sounds pathetic, especially with his comments on Cabaye. Talk about whining and wheedling. He should be above that. If Cabaye is actually refusing to play he should be heavily fined, then suspended. There is a huge risk the discontent will spread further in the French contingent. If we’re desperately poor by Christmas will a lot of them be asking to be sold? The risk is huge right now and Pardew looks like he’s under an enormous strain. That must transmit itself to the squad as well.

      (Quote)

  53. If an untried Ince is worth 8 million quid, then Demba Ba can’t be too far away either. The toon only want to pay 30 bob, and a months supply of bovril crisps…and they wonder why they can’t get it “over the line”. There again, the bloke probably doesn’t want to come back to the toon, but the media kind of ignore that…

Maybe Ashley thinks he’s bidding in drachmas or summat ? You can’t get an average EPL player for under 5 million pounds these days. Obviously even this amount is way off our radar.

      (Quote)

  54. G2, I’ve just had a flash mate, and have seen the future 😉 You heard it here first…

It’s only a matter of time before Pardew implodes. He can’t handle the pressure of managing a club like the toon, especially being surrounded by knackers like Ashley and Kinnear. He has already admitted to as much in the press, that last season aged him, and he felt the pressure intensely.
That’s nothing compared to what could happen this season. A few more poor results and the **** will REALLY hit the fan. Pardew and JFK will BOTH implode before the end of January. God knows where that will leave Ashley though.

      (Quote)

  55. That sounds correct to me Munich mate @72. There is huge trouble coming and the only way out is if we suddenly miraculously start to play well, especially at home. Fulham is a huge game for Pardew. A terrible performance could be the final nail in his coffin, even this early in the season.

      (Quote)

  56. Sorry to hear it Troy @74 but I think most of us are after this summer. Nothing but lies and bollocks from the Ashley mouthpieces. Pardew looking more and more desperate. Cabaye must be a nightmare for him. And the fact that Remy is injured really hurts as well. No striker options to speak of. Cisse is lost with our style? of play. The defense gets too much pressure and has yet to settle in. It’s a terrible position to be in but all caused by Ashley. He has created a disaster at the club.
