Another awful transfer window

Kinnear spotted doing some work...
Kinnear spotted doing some work…
So the transfer window has been and gone and with it so have our chances of adding to the squad we have.

On the positive side we didn’t lose any of our key players thus keeping hold of Yohan Cabaye who will no doubt be “like a new signing” in the coming days.

All we have to show for our endless scouting missions, our protracted negotiations and all the waffle that goes along with it is a loan signing from a relegated club who we don’t even have an option to buy at the end of the deal according to reports. It’s not great is it?

There is a new TV deal in place, a deal so lucrative it ensures that even the bottom club in the Premier League will pocket more than Manchester United did for winning the league last season. We have a sponsorship deal in place which, despite the controversial nature of it’s business, apparently “allow us to buy a new player each year” according to Derek Llambias.

So where has all the money gone?

Now don’t get me wrong. I know that the TV money is awarded in stages so it’s not like we have a £60 million pot of cash just sitting there, but it’s the same for other clubs aswell. Some of them have front-loaded the cash and put the bulk of it up themselves so they can improve now, others have spent what they wanted to with what hey have available and then there is us who have spent just £2 million.

Regardless of however people want to paint us I do think we are quite a realistic bunch. Many of us know that we won’t be spending £20 million on this or that player and to be honest that doesn’t bother me personally. However we do want to see strengthening of some description and maybe a willingness to back a Chief Scout who is noted for his eye for talent.

Here’s a difficult thought…. How about spending a bit on Carr’s recommendation and perhaps making more money back in the long run rather than outlaying the bare minimum? Speculate to accumulate if you like, only without leaving us short when the eventual injuries hit.

I’m not surprised by our transfer window at all which has probably been shown in my articles, or lack of them, about transfer links here and there. I’m not surprised we’ve signed nobody and I believe that was our plan all along.

Obviously I feel sorry for the fans as we pay our money into this club in many ways and we deserve more than having to wish for a perfect season when it comes to injuries or suspension. It was bad last season but at least we don’t have the inconvenience of the Europa League this years eh?

I feel sorry for the players who have basically been told that they are going to get no help even though they struggled last season. Can anyone blame Cabaye for wanting to be away? I bet he’s not the last one to be casting envious glances elsewhere.

I also feel sorry for Alan Pardew. Now he brings a lot of things on himself as he can’t control his mouth and no matter how hard he hops for “one or two” to be brought “over the line” the reality is that he has no say in how things like that work and just has to get on with the players he has at his disposal. I’m sure Pardew is no different to other managers who will always like to see their squad added to, unfortunately he just doesn’t get a choice about it.

So where do we go from here? I don’t know. People won’t walk with their feet, not enough to make a difference anyway and if they do it will just be reflected in the balance sheet which will then be used as a stick to beat us with and as an excuse to not spend again.

These are dark days and I only hope Ashley has failed to spend because there is something bigger going on behind the scenes, such as a sale. He’s done some great things for Newcastle like sort out the finances, but that needs to be balanced with improving the first team and on that latter score we’ve been woeful.

The end.

    It’s clear as day. .

Pards said he wanted a football man between him and Ashley.

    He got Jokey.

Jokey has already said he sat down with Ashley and told him the squad was strong enough to finish in the top 10.

No assumptions just picking out the facts that many miss. Looks like you’re one of them. 😉

  2. Kinnear obviously doesn’t like Pards, wants to earn brownie points with the fans or wants his job given the ***** he talked earlier on. What kind of business relationship can you have when one member of staff slags off the transfer spending of the manager in such a partisan way and no real bearing to circumstance. Bearing in mind a few weeks before that he claims to have signed players that neither of them did! Utterly crazy. The heart attack restricted blood flow to Joe’s brain and now he is physically unhealthy. It was out of order for Ashley to give him this kind of responsibility, the man should quit seek medical and/or psychiatric care, for his own good as well as that of the club.

  3. So all the player bids were fake? Eg Gomis… nice work by JK to get the president of Lyon to go along with his cunning plan…

      (Quote)

  4. Troy, I can’t remember Pardew saying he wanted a football man in above him. So JK not a result of that scenario. And now JK’s ramblings are sensible statements of policy which we all respect as opposed to the senile ramblings of a dementia sufferer. That is a reliable Source??

  5. Aussie ,I don’t think the bids were fake ,I just think we were trying it on in the mindset that we really weren’t that arsed if it didn’t come off like . The simple fact is IF they really wanted players in they would be here now as witnessed in January ( 5 in 5 DAYS ) 😉 . Game playing on an epic scale going on at Toon at the moment ,JFK wants Pards out make no mistake ,he wants his job no matter how much he protest.

  6. Aussie it’s easy to put in a shlt offer for a player knowing that it will be turned down and the Lyon president to make it known, thats how they up the price and try to start a bidding war.
Do you not think the regime would stoop that low

  7. What if Ashley was always going to spend bot all in the window and recruited Kinnear as his fall guy to take the flack, his skin is thick enough to take it, should be interesting when they all surface to hear what they say.

  8. @Prem

Pards did state he wanted a football man between him and the board. The board being Lamearse and Ashley.

It was well documented. I’m off to work and haven’t got time to look but will later.

Its Jokey who has decided the squad was strong enough. Pards is never going to suggest it.
    No manager would.

It’s a complete gamble again made by Ashley relying on Jokeys advice.

It’s good to see Aussie having to eat humble pie again. You must be the size of Billy Bunter the amount you’ve eaten over the years on here. 😛

  14. Decent 8 months of business. Decent few years of business. Most agree the squad has been greatly improved.

    Hissyfitting’s a bit embarrassing.

The only people the neggars have to blame is themselves, in every way. They have built up fairy tale expectations and ignore reality.

Cash is a finite resource for NUFC – that aligned with the longer term goals, affordable football for all, squad improvement where value is met with expectation, continuous improvement etc etc means that the neggars thought process is misplaced.

Its in another state of reality – one that doesnt exist. If the neggars want fairy tale football with unlimited resources – Man City have vacancies. Its refreshing to see a club run properly.

That’s a cheap shot mate 🙁 Show me one post where our fans on here have EVER expected fairy tale expensive signings . No one is asking for mega bucks to be spent ,I don’t consider 5 or 6m extortionate for a forward or good winger ,bloody hell most of us would of been happy with Redmond for 2.5 m or we could of gone in for a loan bid to be sure we don’t struggle up front if we lose Remy or Cisse. Stop blowing things out of context ,we have every right to feel ripped off . Fans are the people along with sponsors paying the wages to the likes of JFK and should feel free to express their anger without being told , by of all people a fellow fan, to go support Man city.

      (Quote)

  16. Kim – its not a cheap shot – NUFC are 100mn in debt to MA. Any signing before paying off that debt is a luxury. Therefore a balance between debt reduction and signings and affordable football for all has to be found.

This years market has been Madness – even Dave Whelan getting only 13mn for McCarthy said it is. I think in time it will show to be a sound decision.

The trouble is we as fan dont see a physical benefit to debt reduction, its a real cancer from our past affecting us NOW, fans should have learned by it but many have not. If its not addressed the problems become greater in the future – look at Italian football from the 90s as a case in point.

Value is subjective, we can ponder the whys and wherefores on any given player, the fact is for a myriad reasons we didnt sign x or y or z. Then we move on with the same rationale and fundamentals as before.

Painful right now – I accept – but long term its the right thing to do whether from a Ashleys stays or sells point of view.

      (Quote)

  17. The facts – JFK did try to buy players and signed Remy on loan. We had a bid accepted by Lyon for Gomis and actually outbid clubs for PEA but couldn’t offer him the level of football he wanted.

So that leaves me with the feeling that either JFK was unable to get the deals do – meaning he’s not good enough as DOF. Or it means that Ashley gave him a ridiculously small budget which he simply couldn’t do anything with – but that’s for permanent signings.
There is no reason why we couldn’t have brought at least another player in on loan.

At the start of the window JFK came in saying he’s looked at the squad and spoke to AP and GC and knows the areas where we need to strengthen and it’s his job to get that done.
Then he came out last week and said he didn’t know why the fans were being so negative – we have a good squad blah blah blah – signs there he wasn’t convinced he’d get anyone else. But didnt say we had stopped doing business and he flew out to Belgium and France.
Pardew after the Fulham game said he’d be disappointed if there were no new arrivals.

We finished 4th bottom last season with the squad we have now, yet we are the only club that have not added to our squad.
I fail to see how anyone can find this acceptable.

      (Quote)

  18. 😈 It’s kinda hard enjoying a thread where you kind of agree with everyone. Come on guys – where’s all the ranty fuckwittery we’ve come to know and love? 😛

I really feel for Pardew right now – can’t wait for his next interview – but tbh most people are having the decency to lay the blame squarely with JFK. I hope he keeps his cool and leaves Ashley to decide whether to hang his senile mate out to dry.

I do realise that we’ve just seen what is possibly one of the last truly stupid transfer windows, and that it is entirely possible that there really was not a deal going that made sense for the club. £27m for ********? £85M for.. well… anyone?? I think we’ve seen a combination of factors -FFP coming in, new TV money and a reality check from Rangers and Portsmouth – forcing a daft mixture of reactions from clubs. I hope we now see those who spent more than they can afford suffer the consequences; it’s not good for the game.

But that does not excuse Ashley for appointing JFK, who obviously didn’t have any of the skills or attributes needed for the job – level head, respectability, measured statements and skillful negotiation. A good man could have got us some results; JFK was never going to do more than spout ***** about how great his phone book is and then forget where he lives.

I also agree that we’ve reached the point where I’d rather Ashley cut his losses and sold up. “Better the devil you know” has its limits and he’s clearly **** out of ideas. Cut your losses and go please, Mike. Thanks for the dosh and getting us in the black; now hand over to people who know the game.

I’m only left with three hopes now:

    1. Cashley admits another mistake and fires JFK straight away. Enough embarrassment – get rid!

    2. Pards gets our squad ticking properly and delivers the results that look possible on paper.

    3. The nazi down the road implodes that club in the most entertaining and spectacular way imaginable.

  19. I booked my seat on the reality train some weeks ago.
After signing Remy I said that the only business left was to sell Cabaye (before Arsene came in to unsettle him) and that Ashley would be celebrating another successful window.
At least the window has not turned me into a manic depressive and I’m pleased we kept Cabaye.
Yes, I would have liked another striker, but I was well aware that Pardew did not want another striker in.
Andymag; do you still doubt me that Pardew will give Shola playing time in most games this season?

      (Quote)

  20. We met be bid over 8M for Gomis and supposedly made a large bid for Thauvin and PEA, so I don’t think there was an unwillingness to spend for the right player. I think the problem is that they think the current squad is good enough for a top 10 finish. I would agree with them so far as our starting 11, and maybe our top 13 or so players are good enough for a top 10 finish. But that of course assumes that we have injury luck, and Pards gets a few things right. It’s a risk surely.

      (Quote)

  21. Kim “Fans are the people along with sponsors paying the wages to the likes of JFK and should feel free to express their anger without being told , by of all people a fellow fan, to go support Man city.”

I see a certain kind of fan, with a certain kind of unrealistic short sighted view as the real problem at this club.

NUFCs biggest strength and weakness is one and the same – the fans. In the KK walk out era – theey turned on the thing they loved and contributed massively to relegation – but they absolve themselves of blame by a “Mob Pardon” granted by the Mob of course.

If fans want fantasist football at fantasist prices when budgets dont allow for it at their present club, in the best interests of all parties, the fan, their friends and families who listen to them bleat, the club, their fellow more pragmatic fans and their new fairytale club’s – they should leave and support Fairytale FC. Everyones a winner and they can be happy paying 80mn for Gareth Bale and 27.5mn for Fellani – I dont want that, I want hard work, honesty and an enduring football along the lines of what Arsenal have created.

      (Quote)

  22. Stardust ,a 6M signing that may ensure we don’t get relegated should we lose Remy or Cisse isn’t ignoring the debt mate ,it’s a drop in the ocean when you consider the financial implications of relegation. 🙄 He is getting £60m over the next 3 years in TV revenue to go towards his debt ,I’m sure he’ll take a fair chunk of that anyway ,if he had sold on Obatan and Gosling and Shola and Amilfitano he could of easily gotten a £6m forward in to cover us . I don’t buy all this financial prudence bollocks ,we are seemingly the only ones adhering to FFP and PL regs ,other clubs aren’t in the least bit concerned they are seeing the bigger picture that get good players climb the league earn more money for a higher placing. What happens in January when or if we are bottom 5 and panicking ,oh I know he has to go out and spend ,it’s stupid false economy imo. By the way the cheap shot remark was the support Man city jibe .

  23. Sharpy. Even heard yesterday, Courtney so not a reliable source 😆 that Lyon received two written bids for Gomis for 12m Euros but that NUFC would not match them.

Sharpy again, given the PR statements by AP & JK there should have been signings and that there were not was disappointing and IMHO JK has to carry the can and be replaced.

Sharpy and again, we did not finish 4th bottom with this squad. We had injury problems in the 1st half that left us struggling and the 5 signings in January failed to do more than keep us from being relegated. This squad is significantly better than the squad that started last season, see 47 and with less games and hopefully better luck with injuries we should do a lot better. Against Fulham we at least showed some potential.

And finally Sharpy the fact that for the first time in decades this club is being run on financially sound footings and that each season since relegation we have started the season with a stronger squad to me at any rate indicates that this IS acceptable. Not ideal I’ll grant, and like every fan I’m wanting more, but acceptable certainly.

  24. Stardust (thank god you’re here – someone to add some counterpoint!) – I realise what you’re saying, but there are limits and we’re now past them. Ashley has no right to expect to freeze the club until he’s paid back – he’s lent into the wrong industry for that; this is not like banning staff bonuses.

You make a good point about it being a good 8 months… kind of. But if you’re going to adjust the timescale to just scrape in the last time things were good then it weakens the point a bit.

If the club had said way back before JFK arrived that they’d spent their budget in January and would only strengthen if the right deals were available, I’d have gone along with it. If they’d appointed a qualified DOF to try to get those deals, great.

But to appoint such an outstanding pratt to humiliate the club and insult the fans, boast about his own brilliance and then utterly fail?

Surely he has to go. Nobody should keep their job after doing that.

Disagree with that fella – I think there’s a long way to go in terms of stupidity. Where “football men” are still involved in commercial decisions they will continue to gamble different clubs very being in their pursuit of short term gratification and ego boosting numbers – whilst totally ignoring the mess they are making of our game and their individual clubs long term futures.

I find it hard to associate with football as it is at present, many I know feel the same, it is wrong on every level. Success should be earned in sport.

Your point doesn’t hold any water mate, because like I’ve just said, we had bids for Gomis and PEA accepted both were €10m or more and both would have been 50k pw or more for wages.

I’m sure Pardew would have been happy with Bent £6m and Redmond £2.5m – less than what they were looking to pay for Gomis alone.
Bent too old for out transfer policy – ok then, Redmond for £2.5m and loan Ba or Lukaku.

You say it’s refreshing to see a club run properly. As we are the ONLY club not to have signed a player this window – are you really suggesting that EVERY other club are getting this wrong?.

But to be fair the Pards and JK really did only talk about adding a striker (which they did, sort of) and maybe another player.

As I said before, my issues with them are 1) they overestimate the strength of the squad, and 2) seem content with “top 10” as the goal for the club.

The fact is JFK was brought in to oversee the transfer side of things ,other than shipping out Simmo ,Perch and Harps he has failed big time. The biggest problem Ihave with Ashley is the total lack of any form of communication from him about what his plans for the club are it’s bizarre .

      (Quote)

  32. Whumps “Ashley has no right to expect to freeze the club until he’s paid back”

I see no signs of him doing that – they’ve always said – they will pay for the right player at the right price. This transfer window made sure they werent available – with its madness – but in time it will again be shown to be the right call.

Kim – you make the point “Stardust ,a 6M signing that may ensure we don’t get relegated” If there had been a 6mn player available that would have improved us and improved to the next level to which we would aspire – we would have signed them. Clearly in their view they did not see any value in the positions they needed to strengthen.

Money was available – clearly – It was confirmed we outbid everyone for PEA.

I actually have a slightly optimistic feeling about our results this year – but I’m also dreading what happens when I walk into a pub to watch the games. That’s because outside the NE, all people know about – and what they’ll keep hitting us with – is being sponsored by ******* loan sharks from hell, and having a DOF who should be outside Budgens shouting “****! Girls!”

      (Quote)

  34. Shapry – disagree fella. I think my points valid. The club have continually said – the right player at the right price.

Fans seem just want to see money spent regardless.

The club clearly did not see any right players at the right price. Therefore a fans position should be to accept that. Its easy to spend 10mn with a throw away line on a blog, another to actually spend and pay that money. Value has to be gained.

Given all that he’s said (and the very fact of his appointment) and I think the fans have a right to have expected some improvement to the squad. By any definition, the guy has been a huge, embarrassing failure.

NEWCASTLE UNITED Alan Pardew has spoken for the first time since the club failed to land any of their transfer targets on deadline day.

The Magpies made just one new addition to their senior squad during the transfer window with Loic Remy joining on a season-long loan deal from QPR.

Pardew, who was keen to bring in another two players to strengthen his squad, released a statement this afternoon after fans took to social networking sites to vent their frustration at a lack of business, despite the arrival of director of football Joe Kinnear.

The statement from Pardew read: “We are delighted to have brought Loic Remy to the club in this window and we believe he will form an exciting and effective partnership with Papiss Cisse.

“Joe has worked hard on numerous targets, particularly an additional offensive player. However some of the options that were available within our financial means were not as good as the players we already had and there is no point bringing in new players unless they can improve us and take us forward.

“We did the majority of our business in the January window, signing five excellent first team players.

“With the strong squad we have we should all approach the season in a positive, optimistic frame of mind.”

  52. Remember that pic posted yesterday predicting what Pards would say today?

I’d have pissed meself laughing if he’d just sat in front of the press and held up a giant copy of that pic.

Still – he’s done the right thing, put a bit of blatant gloss on an obvious disappointment, knowing that JFK will now take the full blast rather than him. Quite right too.

  53. I love how Chelsea loan out Lukaku to the ‘lower league’. Like a little gift and to aid his progress before he might be ready one day for one of the ‘super league’ clubs at the top. It really is like having a league of the top 6-7 who we already know who they are before the season starts and then a lower league below it.

  54. So I’m glad Pards is happy cause if and when the injury curse sets in and we can’t buy a goal I take it he won’t be blaming injuries and a thin squad as apparently we have no worries going forward. Now is the time he should be expressing concern at how ill prepared we are should injuries kick in , only a bunch of fools would think we are in a comfy position .

  55. Thing is we didn’t necessarily need to “push on” as much as “shore up”. First team winger, back up striker is all, just to be sure.

  56. So Joe worked hard but failed to bring in another offensive player.
Ashley could have done that himself, he had no trouble bringing in an offensive D of F.

  57. One player I would have gone for was Shane Long, £5m west brom agreed to sell him to hull for before it fell through.

Would have been a good foil for Cisse holding it up and running the channels…

  58. DJG-The only thing is, he is in fact their best striker. Get shot of moses by all means, Ba wouldn’t be a massive miss, but one tidy finish from Torres v Bayern means **** all. Lukaku is a monster.

  59. Kim poor article that. says Newcastle 7-1 against relegation. So how many worse than that my guess several

  60. Stardust – what a bloody cop out “The right player at the right price is!”

You are telling me that throughout every league Britian or across Europe they couldn’t find ONE player that was “right at the right price?!”.
They were prepared to spend €10m plus add ons for Gomis – that was accepted by Lyon – so they found one at least. But they didnt get that deal done. So they were prepared to spend that money on Gomis but he was the ONLY player they found who fit the “right player, right price” criteria?!. Come on man.

But you seem to avoid the point of loan players. They loaned Remy for £2m. Why not loan Ba or Lukaku or Sinclair?. They see loan deals as value for money. Though that doesn’t make sense to me either. Surely the 2m for Remy is dead money as he isn’t our player.
At least if they spent £2.5m on Redmond he’s then our player?!.

JFK flew to Belgium and France so has been actively looking. We also had bids accepted but failed to sign anyone. That equals incompetence to me.

  61. Prem / Kim – It could be worse we could be Sunderland.

Not one of their players I would have at the toon. Not one. Di canio will ruin them and I will love it 😆 😆 😆 😆

  62. I think Kim has it at 139: all is rosy as long as we don’t have suspensions or injuries in key areas. Which we will. I think Pards could have put that caveat in, but who knows what constraints were on him? If he’s just keeping his head down until the flak dies down, fair enough really.

I’d be a lot happier if we just had an equivalent of Dummet at wing or striker; someone else to give us some options in attack, coming through the ranks. They clearly don’t think Campbell is there yet. Sammy looks closer, but it’s all a bit grim as soon as Remy gets crocked/banned/locked up.

Cisse finding his contact lenses would help too. 🙁
