Game On! Newcastle v Southampton

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
A good day to you all, and welcome to this ‘Game On’ feature which will build up to and take us through the match with Southampton this afternoon.

Last weekend was momentous for us. We managed to beat Manchester United on their own patch for the first time in 41 years which should assure a decent welcome home for the lads today.

However whilst we were upsetting the red half of Manchester, Southampton set about frustrating the blue half by holding City to a draw at St Mary’s – ending a run of three straight defeats in the process. That sounds as though Southampton haven’t been performing this season – they have, and under Mauricio Pochettino the hard-working Saints will provide a tough test for Alan Pardew against his former employers this afternoon.

My good friend Marktoon has carefully crafted a match preview for you all to have a flick through if you’ve not done so already. You can view it here and it features news of injuries and suspension for both clubs, a look at previous meetings between the two sides along with some stats and facts thrown in for good measure.

The match itself will not be broadcast live here in the UK although it is due to be shown on some overseas channels so keep your eyes out for any decent streams as those who aren’t lucky enough to be going to the match are going to want to watch. If you do find a good stream then please share it with your fellow NUFC fans and leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be added in below on full as soon as I can possibly get to it. However if you’re to eager and can’t wait it usually appears in the comments below courtesy of some of our hawk-eyed regulars who are on it like Sonic! Either way it should be out just after 2pm.

That is just about it. This is an interesting game involving two sides who are probably overachieving at the minute if you take into account pre-season expectations so I guess we’ll all have to watch and find out which way it goes.

Howay the lads!

  1. KIM fans are so fickle at times six months ago cissie was the best thing since sliced bread, wish i knew whats up with the lad is those off side goals that were not off side took that the edge off the lad,he proved in germany and here that he can score goals, nobody seems to be able to put there finger on his probs

  2. Ice-it’s more like 18 months ago he was the best thing since sliced bread 😆

Really hoping he can break his league duck soon but after some signs of promise his sub appearances seem to be getting worse 😕

      (Quote)

  3. Ice ,true, he’s never had problems scoring previously, even when he first arrived he was terrific . Like you I would love to know why he has gone off the boil like. He did have 7 chalked off wrongly last season and 1 this season, but not starting won’t help him either.

      (Quote)

  4. Ice-that’s true, but the article is wrong as Shola has also scored in cup games since then 🙂 …we all know he offers little goal threat but personally I think he is a better partner for Remy if he is playing well.

I would prefer to see a proper attacking midfielder in because for me Cabaye isn’t one and neither is Sissoko and Ben Arfa still has serious questions over his head. What do you make of the striker situation Ice mate?

      (Quote)

  5. i would play cissie against Palace because they sit very deep in defence now with Pulis could be just the ticket for him as i think we will get beat there as they are on the up for the moment, but we will beat Stoke

      (Quote)

  6. Ice-I think Cis or Benny would be a better option for Stoke as well, they’re trying to change style but they’ve still got the same players and I’m not sure how much Shola can do against their boys. We need a bit more trickery against them, get soemone running at Adam or Huth and there’s a good chance the cards will come out.

  7. Ice-after our 5th place finish my mate who’s a spurs fan was angry they got AVB and said Pards was a better manager. Seems he may have been right after all 😆

I wouldn’t let him go because it would mean getting kinnear…there’s an interesting debate on whether people would swap him with AVB though?..

  8. Dear Newcastle United fan’s,
I would just like to say that there is no truth in Alan Pardew joining Spur’s. It would take a lot of money for them to get him. I know some of you want me as manager but it isn’t going to happen. The good news if Alan did leave then I would be on the phone to Dennis Wise straight away. I wish you all a merry xmas and a happy new year.

Love from Joe Kinnear (N.U.F.C Director of Football )

Perhaps he should just try some of Ba’s syrup instead 😛

  10. Ice@389, His breathing is better, just finished the 3rd course of anti b’s but still coughing a bit 🙄 he seems very low but it’s hard to know how he really feels since he can’t talk or sign like. He was supposed to go to respite today for 3 days, my first break in 6 weeks but I cancelled cause I want to keep an eye on him. I got told off by day care because I’ve been poorly and they wanted me to rest but I said it’s only a break if I can relax, which I couldn’t at the moment so he’s best off here with me. I’m too scared he’ll cough at night throw up and aspirate again ,catch 22 really ,damned if I do and if I don’t too. Anyway hoping he’ll be back to best for xmas , thanks for asking like .

  11. I see another two labourers have been killed working on the Arena Amazonia in Brazil. If that WC goes ahead without major problems I will be amazed, it’s starting to look cursed. Tell you what, I wouldn’t watch a game in any of them new stadia, reckon half are likely to collapse at any moment. Nah this is one WC I’m glad I’m not going to.

  12. Kim – Big respect lass, your doing a great job.
I really hope you and Lew have a great xmas.
My Nana was blind and lived with us for the last 20 years of her life, so I kind of understand your pain.
Respite is invaluable, but you are right to keep Lew with you ’til he is better.
Keep strong, your time will come.
    Bless you.

  13. having watched all those attempts on goal from blunderland against wet spam, I have to say they are really unlucky.
But when you are ****, and struggling at the bottom of the league, everything goes against you. 😆
The sooner they are relegated the better, and they can prepare for life in the fizzy
    Hopefully for many seasons 😛

      (Quote)

  14. Cheers BB, yeah ,feels right to not send him, I like to live by my instincts .

Got to agree about the Scum game too ,they were unlucky but that’s life as they say and I’m certain they are down, Poyet won’t save them.

  16. The more I think about it, the less the AVB sacking makes sense.
5 points from top 4 with more than half a season still to go. MADNESS 😈
Is Levy really so arrogant that he thinks they should be winning already 😯
I would understand if they were 5 points from the bottom, but sheesh get some perspective or what ❓

      (Quote)

  17. Ice, 😆 I think BB is right, best stick to the syrup like. And yeah I’m due a decent xmas on the health front this is or could be 4 in a row where a family member is very poorly, last year was dad in hospital, the year before LEW with swine flu he caught from me 🙄 and the year before that a tummy bug, feckin hate December tbh. 😆

      (Quote)

  18. BB, Levy strikes me as a bit of a ball breaker ,they reckon he is a hard nosed get in player sale negotiations by all accounts. I can’t believe he honestly thought all them players would hit the ground running like. Does he expect the new manager to get them into top4 😕 , can’t see that happening .

      (Quote)

  19. KIM you seem to have a lot of luck pity its all bad mate 🙁 bit like me always problems at xmas for me too i dont like it kids grown up and gone now so not the same, now mrs is in bed with bad chest it hits her every year at this time she is never ill until this time of year for a week or two,but still dishs up a great dinner 😀

  21. Ice, 😆 , That’s mums for you mate ,I served up xmas lunch when I had swine flu ,every one ate apart from me . When I think back I must of been nuts, I was hanging . Got to agree it’s not much fun as you age, I used to draw on the national grid big time with all my lights when the kids were small but it’s just a tree and two decorated mantles now like. I tried to get into the spirit this year even made two cakes and pickled onions 😆 but until we get past the 25th in one piece I can’t promise I won’t be decking Santa when he visits 😀

      (Quote)

  22. BB i think they have someone set-up mate, you dont sack manager unless they have talked to someone else, been on the cards for a while imo,i hope they get hoddle too serve them right, think they have wasted a lot of the Bale money

      (Quote)

  23. Ice ,Re your Mrs being ill ,do you reckon it’s the stress of getting stuff done for xmas leaves her run down, I’m sure that’s why I got a stinking cold last week cause I been running around for mum and dad too as well as my stuff and then Lew ill. It’s just one day and the true meaning got lost a long time ago sadly.

      (Quote)

  24. Didn’t know there was a ‘true’ meaning. 😯
commercial bullshit the whole lot of it.
    Bah humbug 👿

  31. At least we made yous sweat 👿
Absolute load of tosh from the England team.
    Gutless and brainless.
Like watching NUFC in our relegation season.
    Pardew for England 😛

      (Quote)

  32. Pardew:-
“I think we can be very calculated in this window. If you are in a good position, there is no need to rush anything,” Pardew said in a press conference.

“In the corresponding window last year, we really needed to do some business and when you need to do business, I think it is a difficult window.

“When you don’t need to do business, which perhaps you can argue we don’t, then maybe you can look at it in a more calculated manner.”

Sounds like Pardew has been given the ‘good news’ from the fat man 😈
we wont be signing anyone in January

      (Quote)

  33. Hopefully that ends our links to this player and that player.
    Particularly the Zaha story

      (Quote)

  34. BB, agree, we shouldn’t expect any signings then we won’t be disappointed , sorry state of affairs but true sadly.

      (Quote)

  35. BB – I think the opposite mate. Pardew has also said he’s looking to bring 1-2 players in, but in your extract he’s suggesting we don’t need to be too hasty – which to me says loan signings rather than permanent.

I think Zaha and Luuk De Jong could well be our main transfer targets next month.
If we could get Gomis, Finnbogason or Ince cheap then we may well look to sign them, but if not Zaha and De Jong would see us through to the summer.

Sounds really romantic focusing soley on local talent, but I have to say I think it’s a little naive really. When you think that players of this age would become ‘homegrown’ talent and that they would contribute towards the quota, surely we should be looking further afield.
I’m all for local talented players getting signed up and getting a chance, but that should surely be combined with the best possible talent around the globe. Spanish, Germans, Belgians, South Americans alongside Geordies

      (Quote)

  37. Do not want Zaha one bit. Remy is one thing but I don’t want to help the mancs long term. I still think we need a striker and a winger or attacking midfielder for the first team. A striker who can bring the best out of Remy and ideally, Cisse, and an actual winger because right now we have goof and sissoko as our main options. Neither of them can cross really, so a winger with pace who can cross (how long have we needed one?) would be nice and would allow us to mix it up a bit.

Attacking mid could wait until the summer I suppose when Cabaye goes…

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy- I agree. And citing as our example Dummett who is essentially third choice left back and fourth/fifth choice centre back isn’t really ideal…Obviously I like him but without playing time he won’t develop.

I think the club said a year or two ago we wont buy any foreign players under 18. Even after we were supposedly focusing on youth…the fact is other countries will produce better players at young ages because for some kids out there, football is all they know. Can the same really be said about our youngsters now, who have no pitches to play on and aren’t allowed to be too competitive in school or play in the street at night? Any kids that show a whiff of talent here by 16/17 face the struggle with agents and their own egos.

  39. Newkie
Nile Ranger epitomises everything that is wrong with English football. Because our lower leagues are so well supported and have a lot more financial clout than their foreign counterparts – a young English player that has the slightest bit of promise and is on the books of a Premier league club can forge a career that is better paid than most of us for the rest of their lives.
He’ll still be on a few thousand a week now undoubtedly.
In other countries players have to work hard, and fight their way to ensure that football can pay for their living.

      (Quote)

  40. Newkie – I’m amazed at our approach to youth recruitment to be honest. It’s beyond naive even if you think about it from an Ashley point of view – how many Geordies sell for £20-30m plus.

      (Quote)

  41. Sharpy
To be fair – last few years it’s more Geordies than anywhere else in England..!

      (Quote)

  42. Oz @ 423 Are the Ashes over yet? I don’t know. I only watch cricket when Australia is losing. I haven’t watched/heard a sports program or the news for weeks, so I can avoid the wall-to-wall breast beating and arrogance. Thank God for the football and the hillbilly nepotism of the those in the West of the country. 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  43. Solano-exactly that, it’s a crying shame.

Sharpy-it’s a joke really and it’s one of my main gripes with Ashley and those who claim he has a great vision and long term plan. Our youth policy is shocking and all this is basically saying is we have our locals on the one hand and Graham Carr on the other, and he won’t be looking at under 18s. I’m not convinced Carr is even building that much of a network out there for the future of Newcastle United (he isn’t being instructed or funded too) so when he retires most of the knowledge will probably go with him.

Maybe it will change when we get the new training facilities but I have my doubts.

      (Quote)

  44. I hate losing – but its ten times worse losing to those gloating aussie B*stards

we are absolute sh*t – that’s why you won

somebody deck that Johnson guy please – show some bollox

      (Quote)

  45. Bris-you have my condolences. Strange how Aussie pips up at the point of victory but otherwise keeps his head low when things aren’t going his way-reminds me a bit of his fantasy team which is dropping like a stone…

      (Quote)

  46. Yeah, Newkie. The coach signed his two sons and dropped their arch thug … er … captain. When the captain spoke out about it, the coach asked the owner to cancel the captain’s contract. The owner sacked the coach instead. 😆 😆 😆

And you guys thought Newcastle was a place for comedy capers.

      (Quote)

  47. Sorry lads, I almost forgot how cordial and polite the average english cricket fan is. 😯 I went to the test and 95% of the gobshites were poms, they were very gracious in defeat 😆

      (Quote)

  48. Newkie, thanks for the link mate.. shocking news.. why cant I support a quasi stable football team.. I actually thought Edwards was doing a good job, he was developing a young team and this **** happens.. what a joke..

      (Quote)

  49. Aussie,

I wouldn’t brag too much about cricket. Sooner or later you are going to have to face South Africa. 😆
