Newcastle v Sunderland – Derby Day match preview

Magpies v Mackems
Magpies v Mackems
The derby at St James’ Park is the one fixture I always used to make sure I could get to.

No matter what I had planned, whether it be work or anything, I would give it up just to be there to cheer on United.

However in recent years the derby has taken a sinister turn with trouble flaring off the pitch. I’m getting too old for that and can’t be bothered with the hassle (because I can’t just walk away!) so missed out last season and will be again this season. The derby has turned toxic.

However there is a motion with this one to put the passion to the fore whilst leaving the aggro at the door. Both sets of fans have been guilty of it, most notably after the last derby on Tyneside where the result didn’t help but the reactions of a few were completely over the top.

We’ve suffered at the hands of the Mackems in recent times and face the possibility of losing three Tyne-Wear derbies on the spin for the first time since 1923. To stop that happening we need to keep cool heads and play with commitment and take our chances when they come. There may be a gulf in the league standings, but in these games it is who wants it more on the day.

Newcastle:

Loic Remy will miss out through suspension after having his appeal for his red card at Norwich turned down but not extended, which confuses me. Being upheld means that surely it was a frivolous appeal, so why didn’t the FA extend the ban to four games?

Also missing are Yoan Gouffran and Fabricio Coloccini while Ryan Taylor remains our only long-term injury concern. Luuk De Jong looks likely to occupy a space on the bench due to a lack of match fitness. Papiss Cisse should be fine to play after missing out against Norwich.

Sunderland:

Carlos Cuellar and Kieran Westwood will miss the game through injury. Phil Bardsley will be assessed after limping off against Stoke. New signings Ignacio Scocco and Liam Bridcutt are not likely to start the game.

Previously…

This will be the 150th competitive Tyne-Wear derby with results being fairly evenly split over those encounters. United have won 53 times, Sunderland have won 47 times with 49 draws making up the numbers.

At St James’ Park we have been stronger than Sunderland having win 31 of 68 matches played on Tyneside compared to 19 wins for the Mackems. However, more recently, it’s worth noting that we’ve not beaten Sunderland at home since that famous 5-1.

Stats and facts…

A total of five red cards have been shown in the last seven league games between the two sides.

Shola Ameobi has scored seven goals in his last ten Tyne-Wear derbies. Only Jackie Milburn has scored more goals in this fixture.

Topical since Yohan Cabaye has now left, but United won only four of the 20 games Cabaye missed during his time on Tyneside.

Newcastle have failed to score in four of the last five league games and have won one game in the last six outings.

Adam Johnson has scored or assisted each of Sunderland’s last seven Premier League goals.

Sunderland have lost just one of the last eight matches and are unbeaten in their last five away games.

Final thought…

Granted I was all calm and placid at the start but by the time kick-off arrives tomorrow I’ll be just as radgie as ever and will be screaming for us to get into them. At themoment though everything seems low key. Maybe it’s the midweek games? Maybe the closure of the transfer window the day before the match is playing a part? Maybe it’s because Sunderland have an actual cup final to look forward to rather than treating their jolly to SJP as their annual cup final?

After the loss of Cabaye we need a win. I’m still not sure how we didn’t win at Norwich after hitting the woodwork so many times and wasting some guilt-edged chances, but what better way to get things back on track than a win against you’re local rivals? We need it, the players need it, and Alan Pardew needs it.

Howay the lads!

  1. Don’t worry mates Joe is scouring Europe for a brilliant, cheap AMF who doesn’t want wages and has no agent at this very moment. I feel very calm now. 😯

  2. pardew has said we will need two new players next season he’s got to. be joking, think we need more than two players, kind of telling us there will not be to much to look forward next year, why does that not shock me jabba needs.the cash 👿

  3. With a tremendous surge in spending like this in January just imagine how fiscally responsible we’re going to be in the summer. I can hardly wait. Other clubs may make sensational signings but we’ve got balanced books and a mediocre (and shrinking) squad. I’m sure Arsene is dying with envy. Eat your heart out Wenger. 😆

  4. We’re saved mates. Our savior Dekka has been spotted at the training ground. Latest quotes:
“What the f**k has Joe been up to then? Where is that pinhead anyway? Right, then I’ll put in a quick bid for Bryan Ruiz!”

  5. More exciting news from Dekka:
“Right then I’ve just begun to sort things. I’ve got Shola signed to a 10 year extension, I’m renegotiating Obertan’s contract and Gosling is our AMF of the future. Everything is back under control.”

  6. Does anybody have Messi’s private number? Joe is going to put in a quick derisory bid. But the helicopter is available. Talk about first class treatment.

  7. Some very comforting words from wor Joe in our hour of need:
“What the f*** are those Geordie wankers on about now? They couldn’t find their ****holes with a mirror and a set of binoculars. Here I am working me fingers to the bone for them and all they do is whinge.”

  8. Why do liverpool fans hijack every poll that has any sort of reference to them 🙄 Rodgers shouldnt be in the top five managers of the season let alone first place.

Pardew should have a higher percentage considering we are having a better season than when he got both manager of the year awards and for dealing with the farcical **** he has thrown at him every other week…

  9. Solano @61 – soz, mate – misunderstood. Point still stands against the anti-AP brigade, though. (Although most of them are probably on .com) 😆

KK @64 – I think it’s a good point that Solano makes @61. If we had a great owner I’d be open to the idea of a better manager (only just, mind). Under this regime we have to accept that very few would take the job, and even fewer would do it well.

I personally feel that the only thing keeping the club from utter desolation is that we’ve got a manager with the right combination of ability and desperation to keep us winning games. He also does a good line in talking through gritted teeth at press conferences and avoiding phrases like, “my boss is a money-obsessed, charmless fucknugget who would sell his own mum if it helped to gold-plate another coffee table on his huge, tastless yacht. I have met invertebrates with more nouse and passion for football and I hope he dies in a freakish cheese-grater accident.”

    I’m impressed, personally. Dem’s skillz.

  10. Whumpie sounds about right. Everyone has become tired of Mike Ashley. Okay he cares about finances but what our we going to do come the summer ? Even french team’s have seen threw him and are rightly telling him pay up or **** off. If I was Pardew I would walk away and say it’s not worth the stress.

I wasn’t talking about the amount we offered Lyon.

I was talking about the contract offered to Grenier. From what his agent has said, it implies that we weren’t offering the player or the agent enough money but even if we had done, he still might not have come.

Tim Krul is the only player of note that we’ve developed. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact tha we had Harper &Given around idk.

Is Cabaye a better player because of the coaching & training at the club? No, he’s better because he’s played in this league but he is not much better than when we signed him.

Have Tiote, Santon & Gouffran also improved because of our coaching & training? Nope. All of them are pretty much at the level they were at before they joined us.

They’ve benefited from playing in this league but it’s nonsense to say that they are tactically & technically better because of the club. It’s just not true.

I’d expect the changes to be made now & to see the results in 3-5 years.

I don’t expect us to take 5 years before we decide Kinnear, Pardew Carver & the academy ae not good enough.

  13. Pardew deserves a better club than us to be fair. His not done to badly under Ashley. I would like to see how your world class manager world do under this ******* and fucking idiot of director of football.

  14. Talking about signings, but which position do we really need urgently to come in JAN??

In my opinion are the wings players that we needed. But oh well. Is Jan, and wingers are expensive. 🙄 🙄

  15. Come on lads cheer up!, we’ll have a go in the summer when the time’s right.

January is always a difficult time unless youre selling..

Judge me on my signings then!!

Just had it re-iterated that nothing doing #nufc wise (in or out). We all suspected it but still staggering there will be no replacement

  17. Hey Terry! We also got Remy on loan! we’re show-casing him for a return to QPR or a bigger club.

We have also saved a fortune for the club by releasing Jonas on loan.

      (Quote)

  18. @terry

    Better clubs than us:

    Man City
    Chelsea
    Arsenal
    Liverpool
    Man Utd

Which of those clubs do you think Pardew should be managing?? 🙄

Anytime something goes wrong on the pitch it’s mike ashley’s fault.

Don’t blame the players. Don’t blame the coaches. Don’t blame the manager.

We’ll jump on the bandwagon & just blame mike

      (Quote)

  19. Pardew has not done badly is the same as saying Shola is not a bad centre forward.

Both are probably true but who wants Shola to be given an 8 year contract & for him to still be getting games untkl 2020 ❓

      (Quote)

  20. You’ve lost it Terry. 😯

I’ve no idea how you can justify that PARDEW should be managing MAN UTD!

I know moyes is doing bad but seriously, ypu actually think pardew should be at man utd????

  21. Team for tomorrow

    Krul,

    Debuchy, Williamson, Mbiwa, Santon

    Sissoko, Anita, Tiote, Ameobi

    Ben Arfa

    Ameobi

Subs: Elliot, Taylor, Haidara, Gosling, Bigirimana, Marveaux, De Jong

I don’t think Gouffran is back yet but he would take LW spot and Sammy would take gosling’s spot on the bench.

2 potential game changers on the bench if things are not going well for us.

      (Quote)

  22. KK- please do not joke about Shola and an 8 year contract 🙁
Now that the season ticket cancellation deadline has passed I really expect Pardew to announce a one year extension for Shola very soon 😥 .
If they had announced it earlier thousands of fans would have cancelled.

      (Quote)

  23. Controversial this but what is the point spending now we were never gonna get in Europe and pardew doesn’t want Europa. Agree that We should have had a replacement in before Cabaye left. But we aren’t gonna get relegated and as far as mike is concerned we have hit our target. I reckon in the summer we will sign the de jong bros and cabella. And hopefully sign Remy. Think Cisse will be off and we will offer shoal another year. Either way the summer should be busy. I hope marv gets a chance now as he is a cracking little player when used.

      (Quote)

  24. @santii

I think Cisse is fit. I would go 4222 with Sammy being dropped for Cisse & Marveaux in place of Sissoko.

I’d also think about playing Haidaira instead of Santon to ge more natural crosses in.

We’ll probably see De Jong come on for Ameobi later on in the game.

    ———————-Krul—————–
    Debuchy—Williamson—Mbiwa—Santon
    —————Anita——Tiote————
    ———–Ben Arfa——-Marveaux——-
    —————Cisse——Ameobi———

Tiote & Anita should be the ones to provide support for Debuchy & Santon. I think it’s a balanced team.

Playing Sissoko, Tiote & Anita is too defensive imo.

      (Quote)

  25. @sidekick

If it was upto Pardew i think Shola would already have had an extension.

However i think Carr decides what players should come in & we only sign players if some of ours leave, so shola will leave if De Jong becomes permanent.

    @ALE
I pretty much 100% agree with your post

Some people on here forget that Pardew is just one of the boys.

They think he is some kind of abused victim who happens to be a footballing genius for getting us to where we are despite Mike Ashley & Carr putting together one of the worst squads in the world.

Poor Pardew. I’d be unbappy too if i had to spend time on a private yacht talking about football with Mike & Joe.

I’d much rather be on here whilst it continues to rain outside

  27. LOL 5mil for clattermore. we only paid 4 for Cabs 😯 🙄

ah well lets get on with it, we still look strong.

I want to forget about the window and read some footy news 😀

  28. KK

    I don’t like narrow formations 😀

Sammy i think could be all right coming from the bench at least he offers a bit of energy. Marveaux can’t be match fit so i don’t think he should start. He can can be a game changer though so i would have him on the bench. That is why i have put Sammy on.

Don’t want to start this whole Cisse/Shola debate but i prefer Shola as a lone striker to Cisse which is why i would put him in instead. Ben Arfa to link everything up gets a free role. He needs to learn when to release the ball and not to though.

I think Sissoko has been one of our best players and he starts for me all day. He has made that rw his own so i would keep him there.

I don’t think it is to defensive. Its a good Balance imo.

On top off the first team we really need a balanced bench. Dummett or Haidara (or Santon in your team) not both. Its a total waste of a squad place. 1 cb 1 gk 1 fb 2/3 mf a 1/2 forwards

  29. Why no look at Virgil van Dijk from Celtic or the gang of young talent from Dundee Utd? They would all be cheap (Dundee Utd kids anyway) and are legit talents.

This club could learn that not all talent is French.

  30. Harrumph. I just want to take a moment hear on behalf of all of us to thank wor Joe for all his contributions to the club. There have been contributions haven’t there? Can somebody please help me out here? Let’s see, he confessed his man love for Cabaye, he groveled to Mike stash the cash Ashley, he slagged off the journos, he put us in our places as slack jawed drooling supporters. I man what more does the man have to do?

Oh yes but which table you ask? Well harrumph that’s a little more complicated. Now don’t get upset but there are going to be a few more player sales and losses in the summer. Krul, Debuchy, and Tiote will be sold true enough. And Remy will leave us yes. Marveaux will be gone also, yes. And Cisse. And possibly De Jong. But on the bright side Joe and Mike will still be with us!!!! Huzzaahhhhh!
