Newcastle v Tottenham – Premier League match preview

Newcastle v Tottenham
Newcastle v Tottenham
Newcastle play their first home game since the 3-0 loss in the Tyne-Wear derby and go looking to set the record straight after another 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea last weekend.

This season is in danger of fading into nothing with no cup competitions to aim for and the ghastly (from a club perspective) prospect of qualifying for the Europa League seemingly beyond us. It kind of feels like when you pop into a shop just before it closes, you know when all the staff just want to lock up and ****** off. That’s how I’d describe how I feel about the rest of the season anyway.

Having said I’m still a fan, as we all are for our sins, and we still have games to play and points to try and pick up so I’ll always want United to win, including tomorrow against Tottenham. You never know, perhaps it might spark some inspiration into a fanbase that is rapidly losing some of the passion expected from Newcastle fans?

Newcastle:

Loic Remy serves the last of his three game suspension having previously sat out the defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea. Cheick Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy, Papiss Cisse, Yoan Gouffran, Gabriel Obertan and Gael Bigirimana are all said to be injured although Tim Krul is fine after appearing to pick up an injury at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham:

Erik Lamela, Sandro and Vlad Chriches are out but Andros Townsend is available once more after returning from injury as a substitute against Everton at the weekend.

Previously…

Against the odds, and despite an attacking barrage from Tottenham, Newcastle go looking for a league double over Spurs thanks to a goal from Loic Remy securing a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane back in November last year.

We have a good recent record against Tottenham and have not lost to Spurs at St James’ Park since August 2004 – a 1-0 win for the visitors. A total of 71 games have been played here in the North-East with United winning on 30 occasions and Tottenham taking all of the points in 22 of those 71 matches.

Overall it is Tottenham who shade the head-to-head having won 60 of the 143 meetings to date. United have won 52 times with 31 draws making up the numbers.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle have lost their last three league matches at St James’ Park. They have not lost four in a row at home since 1987.

They have had just eight goalscorers in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side.

United have won just one of the last seven league matches. The other six resulted in losses with no goals being scored.

Tottenham have lost just two of their 12 Premier League away games this season – away at Arsenal and Manchester City.

Only Jose Mourinho has picked up more points than Tim Sherwood since the former Spurs player took over the managerial reins at White Hart Lane.

Final thought…

Well on the plus side, my new keyboard seems to work so I’m back in business in terms of being able to write articles and stuff like that.

On the other hand we’re in poor form and I’ll probably end up writing about another loss come full-time. Sorry to be pessimistic and all that, but it’s how I feel. The sale of Cabaye was always on the cards and I’m not surprised by it one bit, but the failure to acquire a replacement (again not a real surprise) seems to have sucked the life out of things. That and the derby defeat and everything else that is going on really.

We made a cracking start to the season but now it looks like it will all be going to waste. It doesn’t matter in the boardroom as they are happy that we’re pretty much secure for life in the Premier League again next term, but as fans you have to wonder if this is it?

Howay the lads!

  1. Good to have you back, Toonsy, finally…

As for the game, I’m not sure of the result but I fancy us to be 0.

  2. Must also state, that for the first time in my life I feel like I could take or leave the game. Still not sure if I’ll go or not and that’s a really sad state of affairs but in my opinion will be the norm for the rest of the season for me and many thousands if others. I would like to see Jabba’s reaction to falling crowds, and I mean crowds of 40,000. That would have an impact on any owner…

  3. Yeah, it’s all a bit whatever now isn’t it 🙁 , We can pretty much assume we won’t get a Europa spot now which should please our owner no end as no pesky extra investment will be required over and above what has to be spent in the summer. Of course he may decide we don’t need anyone in at all, wouldn’t surprise me one bit. See a loss tomorrow sadly ,no Cabs, no Remy not sure about Goofy being fit and no Colo equals a tough ask but you never know if he starts Cisse and De Jong they may just hit it off and give us a nice surprise.

  4. We have nothing to lose and not much to gain so lets start young Armstrong with LDJ for the full 90 mins. Could be the new Shearer & Bellamy 😀

  5. MARK the site is worse than any rag,its purely for **** stirring, they have just said l/pool best striker is going to join m/city in the summer, the site is like jabba ****

  6. Ice, How exactly does he expect to get the best out of Cisse making a statement like that, it’s just embarrassing for the player. Say it in private if you must but not publicly. My god Sir Bobby would never of done that, when Dyer refused to play out of position for him, he never made it public instead he said a slight hammy niggle and that’s why he didn’t play. It was after his death that Dyer told us what really happened. A loyal and classy bloke was Sir Bob, Pards isn’t fit to lace his boots.

  9. As for tomorrow night, all I can see is another defeat.
Maybe not a hammering, but yet another match without scoring wouldn’t surprise me.
The tide has turned against us now.

  10. Toonsy I agree with most of what you say, I just cant see us getting owt of the game.
Kim I wonder why he hasnt slated Strolla as after all he has went 29 games without scoring but has the cheek to have a go at the player he cast aside 😯 but then nothing surprises me with our club.

  11. good to see the mackems dropping back into the bottom 3
every cloud and all that 😆

  12. Dave , It’s really pissed me off and not just cause I’m a Cisse fan, the blokes an idiot sometimes ,should think on the impact of things he says in public about players, especially ones who he may need in the future.

      (Quote)

  13. Big Dave @ 22
you raise a very good point there mate.
It beggars belief that the press don’t pick up on things like this too.
Pardumdum really is a tool without a clue.
what he says and what he does are completely out of sync

      (Quote)

  14. Well at least the scum are back in the bottom 3 😀 think after tomorrow’s game we will get about another 10 points before the end of the season and a 10th place finish

      (Quote)

  15. I think you can safely guess that not one person living would have predicted a mini-league of three consisting of Man Utd, Southampton and Newcastle – none of whom seem able to secure any European football next season.

    Odd.

      (Quote)

  16. by all accounts, Pardew has stated our new incentive for the remainder of the season, is to finish ABOVE manure.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.
Is there no end to Pardews BS ❓

They need 16 points from them PL games to make 4o assuming that will mean safety or 5 wins and a draw. Do we see 5 wins there?

  20. aye we’d never hear the end of it.
But I am confident he doesn’t have the necessary skill set and mentality to get the Lads ‘up’ for the job in hand.
Its not going to happen imho

      (Quote)

  21. Kim, they could just about finish 17th @ that rate. 😕
    LOL
I just hope they don’t win that bloody cup final is all

      (Quote)

  22. I see arsehole is saying that the spurs boss and Wigan boss,Swansea boss got the sack because they got into Europe and could not cope, with the PL,so I guess he’s saying we don’t want to finish in top six

      (Quote)

  23. Ice, Can’t believe he’s still banging on about it, I don’t see them managers using it as a reason either.

      (Quote)

  24. A few fan-fuelled cliches at the start there, Toonsy, but I can sympathise with the sentiment. I just don’t agree with the view that there’s nothing to look forward to. All games are something to look forward to as far as I’m concerned.

Actually, I find it a bit sad that people’s support is conditional on success.

I also think the depression is largely self-inflicted; a determination to put a negative spin on everything that happens, and then to believe that spin to be the truth – as witnessed in this article, and even Prem’s article the other day.

Still, as I say, I can agree with the general thrust of the sentiment that things ain’t good at the moment and that decisions made by the club’s hierarchy have contributed to the problem.

Hoping for a result v Spurs rather than expecting one. HWTL.

      (Quote)

  25. ” I find it a bit sad that people’s support is conditional on success.”
    Howay man 👿 Hardly
ffs its not about success but rather ambition. Having something to play for other than a mid table mediocre league finish.

  26. Wonder which team Pards will pick against spurs , i would like too see saylor dropped and does anyone know if Gouffran is fit too play ?

  27. when the club alienates the fans like ours is doing, its no wonder fan depression and negativity sets in.

  28. this Damien Comolli guy that wants the DofF job, is he the fool that payed £35M for Carroll ❓
Or have I got the wrong guy ❓

      (Quote)

  29. BB yeah he was Liverfools DOF at the time but i reckon Dalglish had the big say in who was signed up . Not only that but it’s the press that suggested he could be coming , i have seen no quotes or proof he will be coming . Don’t believe this press **** m8 its going too come thick and fast from now until the summer and i garantee it will be 99% bullshit

  30. Axel – it would be hard to believe mashley would be interested in him either.
We have one man who refuses to over spend and another who spends like crazy, generally on utter tripe.

      (Quote)

  31. Bris – a desire to be successful, YES
but that is not the same as being ‘conditional on sucess’
If the club had a desire to be successful, that would be progress worth supporting.
    atm we lack that desire

      (Quote)

  32. BB the way Pardew has been since the sacking of Kinnear i would say something is going to happen ,the fact he came out and said he would be happy with a new DOF convinces me he already knows who is coming and he knows him . Just a hunch like .

Best post i have read on here in weeks….

    100% true

The negative mentality of last season never went away. I doubt it will go away until we win a trophy or Ashley leaves.

Whenever i see the newcastle news now site, it reminds me a bit of fox news. Bullshit spin doctors spreading lies and misinformation to the masses who lap it up as facts unless its a positive in Ashley’s (the democrats :D) favour. Then it is a certain lie.

Maybe only Americans will get the fox news reference but **** it look it up on youtube. You will see how ****** up America is because of spin doctors like Fox.

  34. BB: so you say it’s the desire that people want rather than the success. I can come at that. No worries.

So why do people moan about having nothing to play for? Pardew and the players have expressed a desire to get into Europe. Pardew has expressed a desire to end up higher than ManU. Pardew has said he’d like to win a cup with Newcastle. Even the dreaded board have said they want to finish as high up the league as possible.

Why isn’t this desire being supported?

Instead we get people wishing for defeats, for relegation, for more internal conflict, for upheaval. We get predictions of doom and gloom and people saying they will refuse to go to games. And we get comments saying there’s nothing to play for.

Probably since the last one I posted 😎 But more likely since AMF’s last post.

  36. Every Newcastle game has interest for me I want to win them, I also want to see how De Jong fits in and if he’ll be good enough for the Premier league, will Armstrong get game time or not? etc etc
Is finishing above Manure a bad target? it could possibly bring Europa football, whether the regime want it or not, I certainly want it and therefore imo it’s something to play for, even without that I still look forward to every game(sometimes with trepidation). The owner/regime has no bearing on that for me, past, present or future.
2-1 win tonight anyway HTL

  37. **** me Bris!!! Support conditional on success?? Are you for real? What success have we had in the last 50 years? Nothing! Yet people still turn up to watch, so that comment a complete load of *****!!

The problem is apathy. It’s starting to be a case of the club isn’t bothered so why should I be? The fact that a sporting club has come out and said winning something is not a priority is a dam disgrace! It begs the biggest question of all; WHATS THE POINT?

Maybe because it takes more than words for some people to buy into things. I accept we don’t have a fully fit squad to choose from, but I’ve seen nowt recently to get overly excited about mate.

Boots – Comolli was the bloke that took AC to Liverpool, but he was also the bloke that took Suarez to Liverpool as well mate 😉
Not sure the reports are true tho to be honest

  39. well said Stu@62

😆 Support conditional on success… if that were the case we’d have less fans than the dog & parrot 😆

  40. Ive got to admit tho, there is a general feeling on here of misery. While the present (apart from sitting 8th) isnt too good the future looks even bleaker when you look at the spending needed in the Summer..

well I’m going to be positive and say we’ll only get beat 1-0 2nite 😀

    Toon Toon

      (Quote)

  41. Aussie 😆 …I’m still fukn miserable by the way, it comes as part of the deal of being a Toon fan, what helps me through is that I came to terms many years ago that the chances of NUFC ever winning a trophy whilst I walk this earth is very slim indeed (unlike myself) regardless of who the owner or manager is 😥

      (Quote)

  42. 🙄 You’re being too narrow in your definition of success. It doesn’t just mean winning something.

How about favourable outcome? How about the attainment of position?

      (Quote)

  43. yeah I know what you mean Bris.
Finishing 10th is a form of success I guess.
    Much better than 17th.

      (Quote)

  44. Sorry Bris, in football terms to football fans, success is winning something. Always has been and always will be – otherwise what’s the point in competing for a league title or even entering the FA Cup or League Cup?

The club are trying to brain wash the weak minded to think that having a great balance sheet is success, that keeping hold of one of our better players in a particular transfer window is success or not getting relegated is success. Complete and utter *****!

      (Quote)

  45. BB – **** off man! That’s like saying “Oh I carried on breathing today, so didn’t die” what a success! Is that all life is about – not dying? People thinking like that forget to actually live and achieve **** all!

It’s about ambition – in life and football.

      (Quote)

  46. Trouble with Pardew is that he spouts so much tripe, that its hard to know what to believe.
If he really wanted to win a trophy, then that would be a good target to go for. But then he puts out a weakened team, which makes it look like it was never a priority after all.
Same applies to his Europa target, and beating manure guff.
It just seems like constant spin to get bums on seats and nothing more.
I just don’t believe a word he says anymore

      (Quote)

  47. Stuart – err that was a tad tongue in cheek mate.
clearly we all want more success than finishing 10th
    sheesh
