Newcastle v Manchester United – Premier League match preview

Magpies v Red Devils
Magpies v Red Devils
I’ve been remarkably quiet following the horror show at Southampton last weekend.

That’s probably because what I’d have said about it would have cause great offence, especially if you dislike reading swear words!

It was horrible, toothless and we were played of the park by a Southampton side who took advantage of the fact that we just didn’t turn up. I’m struggling to motivate myself with us having nothing on the line but I don’t expect the same from the players who are paid a lot of money to remain professional and give their all. They failed in that regard last weekend. They failed miserably.

To set the record straight they are going to need to pull something special out of the bag against a Manchester United side who have attracted their own critics this season. That Manchester United side drew with the European Champions in midweek shortly after seeing off Aston Villa 4-1 last weekend. They seem to be gathering momentum and whilst it might be too late for them to rescue their own season it’s still not a good sign for Newcastle.

Newcastle:

Five of the players who played in the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford earlier on in the season will not feature for the return fixture. Yohan Cabaye is now no longer with us after his January move to PSG, Mathieu Debuchy, Loic Remy and Moussa Sissoko are all out while Tim Krul remains sidelined. The whereabouts of Gabriel Obertan are unknown and Sammy Ameobi is also unavailable although Davide Santon could start after completing 45 minutes at St Mary’s last weekend.

Manchester United:

Robin van Persie misses out due to a sprained knee while Rafael and Alexander Buttner are both unlikely to feature due to hamstring complaints.

Previously…

The result earlier in the season means that Newcastle have a chance to do a league double over Manchester United for the first time since 1931. However it is worth pointing out that we’ve won just five games (out of 40) against the Red Devils since the inception of the Premier League.

At St James’ Park we do hold a slight historical advantage in terms of results. The 76 matches played have seen Newcastle win on 31 occasions compared to 28 wins for Manchester United.

However a formidable record at Old Trafford gives Manchester United the upper hand overall. Including the Charity Shield in 1996, FA Cup final in 1999 and FA Cup semi-final in 2005, a total of 156 games have been played between the two clubs. Manchester United have won 71 of those, Newcastle just 41 with 37 draws making up the numbers.

Stats and facts…

Loic Remy has missed the last five games. In that sequence we’ve scored one goal and picked up one win, both if which happened against Crystal Palace.

Wayne Rooney has scored ten goals against Newcastle. Only against Aston Villa has Rooney scored more.

Manchester United have the best away record in the Premier League having picked up 30 points from 48 on offer.

Newcastle have won only four of their last 14 Premier League matches.

Final thought…

As much as I’ve been critical of our levels of motivation recently, I’m not too bothered about that for games like this. For whatever reason we always tend to be able to get ourselves ‘up’ for games like these and if we haven’t got a point to prove after last weekend then we may aswell all get our buckets and spades out now.

However I think the amount of players we have missing will cause us a problem, particularly in attack where we’ve looked impotent without Loic Remy. Sometimes stats lie but our record without him has been poor and that can’t be ignored. Unfortunately I think it will once again cost us in this one.

Howay the lads!

  1. Kim – now Remy has made it clear he won’t be stopping, I won’t have him as a starter anyway TBH. We should have got Campbell back from St Mirren and shared the duties between him and Armaz as soon as we were safe and knew there was nowt to play for. He should have recalled Tav when Debuchy got injured as well IMO.

  2. Sharpy-to be fair tho we can’t be sure of all the details of those loan deals and the specifics on whether we can recall. Those clubs will have put finances into securing those deals and from what I understand they can specify that a season long loan is exactly that-otherwise they will have paid some cash or put some towards the wages of a player who we could just recall at the drop of a hat.

I agree tho, once it was clear we were aiming any higher the youth should have got as many games as possible where possible.

      (Quote)

  3. Sharpy ,yeah agree mate totally but Newks is right sadly ,pretty sure you can’t just recall like. 🙁

  4. NUFC – Writing a book on ‘How to lose fans and alienate people’.

Has there ever been a more depressing, negative and down right patronising statement from a football club in the history of football?

“Our priority will continue to be the league” That means we’re not in the least bit interested in success in any way shape or form – especially a cup!

“We will continue to be prudent and there is money to spend if we feel its the right deal and gives value for money” Translated for the layman means unless Messi or Ronaldo come on the market for £2m we will continue to do **** all and fanny about on shitty loan deals.

Sorry, its time for the revolt. I implore all NUFC supporters to take a stand and get OUR football club back! Stop going to the games, stop buying the replica shirts and just stop buying supporting this horrid, horrific cancer that has taken a grip of OUR once proud football club.

  5. we will bring in one or two players a year

whilst getting rid of 3 or 4 a year

if maths serves me right, we could have no players soon

    mint 😆

  6. Charney.s statement

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2598947/Newcastle-confirm-Charnley-new-managing-director-reveals-club-sign-one-two-players-year.html

1 OR 2 players 😯 👿 Well my patience with him hasn’t lasted long, the **** wit is having a laugh , has he actually looked at our squad . Is he confident we’ll survive with just two additions next season 😕 What a fucking joke we have become. PLEASE PLEASE will someone with some ambition and cash buy our club before we die a death by a thousand mid table ,cup less finishes. I don’t want to support a balance sheet ,I want to support a football team. I want my hero to be the latest no 9 not the latest set of accounts. 👿 🙁

      (Quote)

  7. The question is did Ashley write that & it was endorsed by Charnley ❓

A new dawn under our new managing director or as his anagram suggests
    Era Lynch 😆 or A Lyncher 😆 😯 🙄

same old **** tho, 1-2 players. Is that after we replace Ba and Cabs & hopefully we replace anyone leaving first..

      (Quote)

  8. So considering we have to replace ,Ba ,Cabs, Remy, Shola, Gosling, possibly De Jong ,possibly Colo , Saylor if he goes, how does that equate to 1 or 2 players a year coming in 😕

    Arma for Shola I suppose

Meh , I’ve had it with this lot now.

      (Quote)

  9. A meaningless statement from Charnley which essentially says get ready for more of the same. I expect a bottom 10 finish next season along with a lot of excuse making and possibly another management shuffle. It won’t work Ashley. You are running out of time.

      (Quote)

  10. I think I’ll adopt a 2nd club to enjoy with potential. Leicester City seem a good bet.. 👿

      (Quote)

  11. Unless there’s a serious change in attitude and policies at NUFC this summer I won’t be going to any games next season.

We haven’t spent anything for 18 months so we should have at least £50m to spend and that is still spending within our means. But I guarantee we spend about £15m net if we’re very very lucky.

      (Quote)

  12. The Charnley appointment is just capitulation from the owner. He is saying we are and will continue to be a mediocre club at best! At worst we’ll have a little dance with relegation next season. He is a pinhead who has to go. Vote with your feet mates. Don’t go to the remaining home games and send a message of your own. 👿

      (Quote)

  13. The players have capitulated on many occasions this season. If we were an up and coming team with the players giving it their all and an owner with the plums to make an honest effort I would be quite happy. But what we have is a malignancy at the top. Best to get rid of it as soon as possible.

      (Quote)

  14. they genuinely dont give a ****

as in they really really really dont give a ****

    its heartbreaking

      (Quote)

  15. Cut out the cancer by boycotting the remaining home games. Teach Ashhole a lesson.

      (Quote)

  16. Just came into this bullshit news, god help us that’s another year I will not be getting a season ticket or going to SJP come to that, what a pack of w—kers 👿

      (Quote)

  17. We have no ambition whatsoever and will continue to have none. That is the main message of our owner and his lackeys.

      (Quote)

  18. Ashley is a weak gutless excuse of a man (?) with no desire to improve the club whatsoever. Supporting him by attending games is a complete waste of time as it just serves his only purpose which is advertising SD.

      (Quote)

  19. Personally I enjoy taking the mickey out of SmallBerries but I would much rather enjoy good, entertaining, competitive football each week. The only way we will ever do that on a consistent basis again is to get rid of Ashley.

      (Quote)

  20. Clearly the owner and his flunkeys are continuing to be in a dream world. Two incoming? We’ve already sold Cabaye without replacing him. So is one of the two going to replace Cabaye? So that means one other incoming when we have no decent senior strikers at all? And what about wingers? We know Obertan is cack, Pardew doesn’t trust Benny, we rarely if ever see Marveaux. What about CB’s? Colo wants to leave, Saylor has been out of form for ages, Mbiwa is not ready yet. That leaves Willo. Brilliant. One or two incoming. Yes that’s definitely going to keep us in the top 10 Charnley and fellow morons.

      (Quote)

  21. A lot of stress is being put on developing players through the academy. Nothing wrong with that, except Pardew has shown himself as being incapable of developing players. He prefers to stick with players with no future such as Shola. Hope we are not going to give him another contract but with only two players coming in it looks ominous.

      (Quote)

  22. Ice , G2 , I think what gets to me as well in that statement is the way he’s banging on about the £9m profit in the last accounts, you would think he’s talking about a bloody trophy like.

      (Quote)

  23. you never know, we signed 5 french players when nobody expected it. We might sign enough to see us ok. We will definitely lose a few big players, Debs, Colo, Krul and Barfa I reckon. Plus some fringe players.

I wouldnt read too much into his statement 😯

We just need Pardew to get the players we might sign playing well 😆

      (Quote)

  24. G2 ,I thought Mbiwa was doing well at CB mate but then he gets dropped when Colo returns and shunted to RB in Debs absence ,he is no way a RB sorry but no way imo.

      (Quote)

  25. We’ve got problems to deal with at most, if not all positions! And the club bang on about continuing with the same plan Kimtoon. Unbelievable. They can’t even recognize they are failures anymore. We’ve given up 11 goals and scored none in the last 3 games Pardew you idiot! And Charnley is sounding just as bad. One or two incoming. Laughable if it wasn’t our club at stake. 👿

      (Quote)

  26. G2 I think if Newcastle fan’s are happy with the way Ashley run’s the club then go to the games. If Newcastle fan’s are happy with Pardew tactics and previous results and the players performance’s then go to the games. If you’re not stay at home, watch sky sports and save your money. Ashley has bleed the club dry for to long and will continue to do so if people keep attending.

So exciting news…..we’ve promoted Lee f**king Charnley

A man who has immediately started towing the party line and with one swift statement has managed to completely contradict everything we have been told recently about this summer being benchmarked for a major restructure with in the playing staff with multiple players set to leave
As the squad currently stands I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say, excluding the players on loan, we need 6 players in who can immediately challenge for first team places
Assuming that De Jong’s clause could be activated in the summer that means one, yes one signing this summer
I’m assuming the rest will (possibly) be replaced on a one in one out basis?
    Pathetic

And what ideas does Lee bring to the dire run football side of the club?
Is this a man with huge connections within the football world?
Is this a man who has identified a style and philosophy he wants the club to play and can start promoting it from the youth ranks right up to the first team?
Is this man who can identify, scout and approach coaches to further improve development of the squad?
Is this a man who if needs be (which they do!) can identify a manager who can fully utilise the squad and continue or add to the philosophy the club wants to follow?

Or is this simply another f**king yes man put in place to continually roll out statements that are contradictory b0llox such as were in a fantastic financial position, best we’ve ever been in, but simply can’t compete with the other 19 financial powerhouse’s in the Premier League as we pursue our continued ambition and solitary target of simply remaining in the league?

It’s an absolute and utter disgrace that a club can actually state they have absolutely no f**king intention of competing on ANY level, not just for the immediate, but for the long term future!
Does this mean the 5 year plan of pushing for European qualification every season has been well and truly abandoned?

    Ridiculous
Straight from the club, f**k all will change next season, same **** football, same yes men in charge spouting MA’s propaganda, same heartbreak of seeing club stars flogged the second were comfortable, no cup runs, no intent of seriously attempting to compete, no pride, no soul, no atmosphere, no NUFC anymore

GET OUT OF OUR CLUB ASHLEY F**KING SCUM

      (Quote)

  28. That’s it in a nutshell STEM mate. And I see tads is on here as well. Good for you mate. Spread the word. Time to get serious about getting Ashley out! 👿

      (Quote)

  29. G2
Honestly mate, fell completely deflated after reading that crock of **** statement bleating on about the books whilst continuing to attempt to lower fan expectation
Ashley has his little board full of yes men now, and I see he’s taken a seat on that board, so he can now draw a wage
    Great stuff

      (Quote)

  30. 1 or 2 players per YEAR?! – not per transfer window – per fucking YEAR?!!! …. WOW!!!

I don’t know what’s most disappointing – the fact that nowt is going to change at our beloved club – or the fact that I really couldn’t give a **** anymore!!.

Oh, and as for Mr Pardew giving it ‘major work will be done in the summer’ craic for the last few weeks – yet more BULLSHIT from the silverhaired lying piece of ****!. Unless of course he sees 2 signing PER YEAR as major work.

Good luck to all those deluded Geordie faithful who renew their season tickets, or go to the games next season – you’re in for a right treat 😉

      (Quote)

  31. Seriously guys did you really expect Chumley to come out and say we have plenty of money and will buy a number of players this summer ❓
He’s playing his cards close to his chest. So We can get the players we need without being held to ransom.
This time next year we’ll be pushing the top 4
    😆 😆 😆
    😉

  32. Better a geordie mafia than a cockney mafia ? 😆 😆 😆 😆

Charnley, Beardsley, Stone, Carver, Beardsley, Moncur…… what more do you deluded Geordies want ? !

  33. Pardew will be in major demand by the end of the season
    Real, Barca, England.
    The world is his oyster.
I don’t know how we will ever replace him.
Thankfully we will be in the CL, so that will sooth the pain some what.

      (Quote)

  34. 1 or 2 players 😆

And people think a good manager will come and work for this clown. Delusional. This is what our managers/players have to put up with.

      (Quote)

  35. 2-1 for spuds now  😆

I feel a rendition of the “Time to go ” song coming on. 😛
    Bye bye blunderland

  36. Wow ,nutjob ****** 😯 , I haven’t been able to view on it for last few weeks anyhow.

      (Quote)

  37. Newkie@569, All the more reason to get a modern forward thinking hungry young coach in to utilise what players we have got to the best of their ability I’d of thought. 50,000 fans every week ,modern stadia , nice training facilities ,cat 1 status on the academy , no pressure to get top 6 or even a cup , nah no ones gonna come here. I’m sorry but I can’t hack this we are stuck with Pards cause we can’t get better bollocks, we are stuck with him cause Jabba won’t sack his lacky , nowt more ,nowt less.

      (Quote)

  38. Beardsley Boots, that’s another team that won’t do the double over us next season. Bet Pardew’s well happy ?
If Roy should fail at the world cup the I think Alan Pardew should get the job. I don’t care as long as he isn’t Newcastle manager. Let the rest of England know how **** he is.

      (Quote)

  39. Stem , That would be the best outcome as I think Jabbas hand would have to be forced to sack him like. However I fear the headbutt on Mayer has soured that glass of milk&honey for Pards for ever now. 🙁

      (Quote)

  40. Thing is too if pac-man hadn’t gave them 6 points they would only have 19 points dead and gone

      (Quote)

  41. Kim@573-well it’s one and the same then isn’t it? The key issue is ash isn’t bothered about sacking him, not yet at least, because all he needs to do is achieve safety and market our players for him to recoup some dollar. A new coach would probably just mean better value on sales, not progression 😉

      (Quote)

  42. Newks , we might get more entertaining footie though and not ship quite as many goals 😉

      (Quote)

  43. Trying to find something to cheer me up cannot get any from the circus at the toon, well even if scum win their two games in hand they will still be in the bottom three 😐

  44. Ice, It’s terrible mate 25yrs old 2 kids as well, got to feel for Bob ,hope it isn’t drugs ,not after Paula that would be too cruel on the guy. They say it’s unexplained and treating it as a sudden death.

      (Quote)

  45. Aye, I remember the week leading up to the Scum v City cup final there was one or two on here saying they would gladly swap places with Scum – coz at least they still had something to play for – I wonder if those few still feel that way now?.

I can’t even take pleasure in the scums plight – because the way things are going with us, it’ll be us next season!.

      (Quote)

  46. Ice, I have a pair of magpies visit my bird table every day ,they brought their young one too last spring/summer .Anyway they love mealworms and I put out a big plate of em every morning along with shedloads of feed and nuts and stuff , upshot of it all is, these two mags are the fattest birds I have ever seen ,I have no idea how they take off and stay up , they are so fat they could give Mbiwa and Benny a run for their money.

      (Quote)

  47. KIM@593 lol,as it happens we are big nature lovers, laugh but we have 18. bird feeders and three tables always full costs a bloody fortune even though the Mrs makes a lot of bird cakes herself, made one station myself from a old blown down tree, birds love it all kinds of birds, but I hate magpies would shoot them if I could,I have quite a few small birds nest in the garden but those bloody magpies always trying to steal the chicks out of their nests, hate them

      (Quote)

  48. the difference between Martinez and Pardew who with complete squad have team approximately the same quality is Everton are fighting for the 4th place and they play against Arsenal a big team, but they play to win and win it 3-0 even it’s against Arsenal.
We were in exactly the same position before Xmas we were in a strong run of win, we had our full squad with cabaye Remy, Tiote but at home we **** ourselve we don’t take risk and don’t play even against a very poor Arsenal who made 2 shots on goal but they manage to beat us and at the end of the game Pardew still manage to say we made a good game against a big team…and the **** he tells every time we play a team in the top 10.

This manager is **** as simple as that, otherwise players like cabaye wouldn’t have leave during winter if he had see some ambition of CL with this coach…

      (Quote)

  49. Change is good. It’s a neccessity, especially in football.

I welcome the new managing director. As far as i know, he hasn’t done anything wrong (yet) so i’m happy to give him a chance.

Apparently he’s been at the club for 15 years so he was there before & during SBR’s time.

He’ll also be well aware of the difference a prmosing young manager can make at a club after seeing the impact that 2 cheap, smart & hungry managers have made at Liverpool & Everton.

Mike Ashley has also joined the board of directors. That suggests he might be taking a more hands on approach. His problem has always been that he hires the wrong people & perhaps charnley is the wrong choice yet again?

Pardew has a minimum top10 target. Hopefully regardless of where we finish, charnley realises how incompetent Pardew is & replaces him with a promising young manager.

Mike Ashley wants us to realistically challenge for the top 4 & so he allows us to buy the more expensive & better quality players on Carrs list all of whom come here because the new manager is charismatic.

Just a dream before Troy’s reality train hits & we sign nobody in the summer whilst Pardew is given a new 10year deal…

      (Quote)

  50. @hba39

Spot on with the comparison between Martinez & Pardew.

    @newkie
I’m pleased you’ve finally started to come round to my way of thinking 😉

To be fair, i think there are quite a number of fans that realistically could do a better job than all the coaches & Pardew at the club.

Pardew & the coaches have their jobs because of their playing Careers, not because any of them are smart intelligent & capable people.

There are more capable managers in the workplace than Pardew at the club

      (Quote)

  51. Ice ,Yeah they are intimidating birds them mags, they have quite a few set twos with the other birds like. It’s the bloody pigeons I can’t abide mate ,they eat and eat and eat ,long after they are full then **** on my washing 👿

  52. KIM better not say we kept racing pigeons to for a number of years, don’t want to fall out with you over washing 😆
