Newcastle v Crystal Palace – Premier League match preview

Magpies v Eagles
Magpies v Eagles
Newcastle go in search of their first league win of the campaign as they welcome Crystal Palace to St James’ Park tomorrow.

After successfully negotiating a potentially tricky League Cup tie at Gillingham midweek, a twist of fate with the draw means that our opponents tomorrow will also be our opponents in the next round of that competition, who now have a familiar face back at the helm.

Neil Warnock was confirmed as the new boss at Selhurst Park returning for a second stint in charge of the Eagles following the departure of Tony Pulis a few weeks back. A new manager will generally bring fresh impetus and United will have to guard against that tomorrow. Buoyed by the resigning of Wilfried Zaha on a season long loan deal, this is far from the rudderless Palace that we’ve seen since the start of the season.

However we are the home side and need to start picking up points in the league. A win before the international break would be most welcome indeed. It’s not that we’ve been playing badly but there does seem to be a lack of attacking edge which undermines some decent performances, and with a shaky defence our lack of goals should be even more of a concern.

Newcastle:

Cheik Tiote is once again missing as are Davide Santon and Papiss Cisse. Hatem Ben Arfa is still out of the loop while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is also unlikely to be involved due to an impending move if speculation is to be believed.

Jack Colback and Rolando Aarons are available for selection.

Crystal Palace:

Joe Ledley and Scott Dann are both doubtful for the trip to the North-East but otherwise Neil Warnock has a full squad to choose from.

Previously…

United beat Palace home and away last term, a 3-0 victory at Selhurst Park followed by a slender 1-0 win on Tyneside. Indeed it was the same story when the two sides met in the Championship with United racking up six points from the two meetings.

We do have a good history against palace, last tasting defeat against the Eagles in March 1998 and we’ve not conceded a goal against them since January 1999.

Overall 31 matches have been played between the two clubs with United amassing an impressive 20 victories compared to just seven for Palace with four draws making up the numbers. Just two defeats on Tyneside for the Magpies with the Eagles taking all three points in 1998 as mentioned earlier and 1971 prior to that.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle have won just one of the last ten league fixtures.

United have lost four of the last five home league games.

Crystal Palace have conceded two or more goals in each of their last five league games.

Palace Captain Mile Jedinak made more tackles than any other Premier League player last season. He’s also made the most tackles so far this season.

Final thought…

Whilst we do have a good record it’s also important to point out that we’ve never ‘hammered’ Palace. I suspect that will be the case tomorrow also. As much as I’d love to see us rack up a few goals and for everything to click, I don’t think it will. It’s very early days still but the importance is winning the match regardless of score. If it’s 1-0 then so be it.

I’m always wary when a club we are facing has a new manager. Often there is an uplift in performance and a Neil Warnock is traditionally hard to beat anyway. All those things combined mean that I expect to see another nervy afternoon for the Magpies.

Howay the lads!

  1. Thanks Toonsy.

God knows what will happen tomorrow, should be a winnable game but the way it’s been going lately 😕 . Narrow win, I hope.

  2. Kim – they’ve been toying with us man!. The world will sit up in awe tomorrow 😉

In all seriousness though, it is a bit of a concern. If we win convincingly tomorrow, the money men may decide we don’t need anymore in – if they haven’t already like.

  3. We can’t forecast a goal in injury time off Shola’s backside anymore, so I’ll go 3 – 1 (Riv, De Jong, og)

  4. 0-0 all day If we are lucky.
    🙁
Good luck to all yous dreamers tho.
    I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.
Has the booing started yet ❓
    Parsnip out

  5. Ice – I know you picked up on it on the last article – but QPR letting Simpson go is a really strange one IMO – especially to a rival club.
Also Chelsea supposedly after Remy – why let Ba go for £4m to bring Remy in for £8m?! 😕
Why let Lukaku to bring back Drogba?! – a couple of strange ones from Chelsea that I reckon.
Unless Remy is just to stiff Arsenal.

  6. Unable to create enough chances and cause a threat in front of goal. That’s all I’ve seen so far, so I see no reason to see a change. We won’t score.

  7. SHARPY aye mate a strange “do”all round, don’t understand the Simpson one maybe need money for some reason they got him on a free so nice profit for arrry to blow on another player, don’t understand the Remy/Ba one both have a maybe medical problem,it can only be JM didn’t expect Torres to go plus he must have been on super super wages, bloody funny game this money game

  8. This being nice to wor Alan malarkey is very tough. Still, good luck tomorrow Alan you lovely manager you. Show us your best stuff. Lots of little tricks to knock Warnock’s side of their game. A little laugh, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants on the sidelines will distract them. 😯

  9. They have finally told family of J.Alder that his remains have been found on Friday, god rest your soul old lad 🙁

      (Quote)

  10. Ice/G2 – I actually think it’s a good day for the family in a weird way. At least now they can give him a proper burial.
I’m finding the 17min applause really moving personally, and it’s great to see the opposition fans joining in as well.

I think when they play ‘coming home Newcastle’ before kick off tomorrow John will be up there with a smile on his face saying ‘aye, I am!’.

  11. Going for a 2-1 win to us… based on nothing other than a desperate hope that we win!

      (Quote)

  12. Well at least you’re consistent.

Your view is based on nothing but desperate hope. 😳 😛

      (Quote)

  13. “Gillingham were very defensive, and Aston Villa went very defensive in the second half too and didn’t give us a lot of space,” said the Newcastle boss. “It’s very difficult for a number nine to score when teams pack the defence.

“I think this game (against Palace) will be difficult for him because it’ll be the same. I think it’ll be a penalty, a set play or maybe a shot from the edge of the area or a ricochet where we hopefully score.” 😛 the mighty mags v C Palace @St James and we’re hoping for a ricochet 😯

      (Quote)

  14. Why bother basing your decisions on facts, history and stats. 😛

I’m scoring my points than the toon will get here! 😛

      (Quote)

  15. Re John Alder, I’m with Sharpy on this one.
At least he is coming home and his sister, who is absolutely devastated, can get some closure with a proper funeral for John.
    RIP Bonny Lad.

      (Quote)

  16. Percy employs the tactic of ‘HOPE’ an awful lot.
How about changing the formation you bloody plonker.
I swear I’ll go mental if we go 4-5-1 today.
Surely he can see we need to go 2 up front minimum.
Even when he puts 5 in midfield, we still don’t get enough bodies in the box.
    Pure genius NOT

      (Quote)

  17. So Alan knows it difficult to score with a lone striker. So surely he will tinker a little bit today v a team that should be beaten..

      (Quote)

  18. The sooner you boys start realise I’m right the better for everyone. 😉

I’ve watched enough to see we aren’t going to create many chances. When the odd chance does fall, it’s flapped at by rookie strikers.

Of course, it’s football and the odd goal will come, but if Palace do score, then the best we will get is a draw.

The odd goal might materialise but two is like living in Aussie world. 😛

      (Quote)

  19. Percy actually said “we may need to score two or free”
    😯 😯 😯
If all the planets and stars are aligned correctly, we still wont score three.
Palace scoring first could be a disaster.

      (Quote)

  20. Bootsy

What would you say on a weekly basis if you were Pards?
What would you say about today’s game?

      (Quote)

  21. @Troy.

Do you not think Pardew could set his team up differently to create more chances for our rookie strikers?

      (Quote)

  22. Looking at stats Palace away are about 50/50 whether they score or not and rarely do they score 2 or more. So with the new manager uplift I expect them to score 1 possibly 2 if I’m feeling pessimistic. At home we do score more often than not and when we do score more often than not we go on to score more. So I am predicting either a narrow win 2-1 or pessimistically a score draw 1-1.

      (Quote)

  23. Troy … a) “we won’t score”..b).”Of course, it’s football and the odd goal will come” c)???? – let me guess, “we’ll definitely score”?…..talk about sitting on the fence 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Troy – I would say what we have tried so far hasn’t been successful and we are going to try something different in order to get our young inexperienced strikers scoring goals.
But personally I would learn to speak properly before going public on anything. It’s cringe worthy just listening to him speak. 😳 😳

      (Quote)

  25. I don’t know what the score will be. Hopefully we will keep a clean sheet as I have Krul, Colocini and Janmatt in my dream team and no cards would be a bonus. 1-0 win surely ?

      (Quote)

  26. @Mark

He could set his team up differently to increase the chances of a striker scoring. He could play two up front.

However the strikers available are not up to scratch from what I’ve seen.

If he puts two up front, it weakens the midfield and hence the protection for our very poor defence.

Mark, no matter what formation we play, the fans won’t be happy. We played two up front last season, we’ve played 4-3-3.

Everyone seems to shout and scream like Aussie Elizabeth Violet no matter what formation because the results don’t go our way.

The hard facts and truth are, the 11 players that we put out simply aren’t good enough and if injuries occur then it’s desperation time.

The quality of our bench is woeful.

Before the season started I predicted we were very poor and worse than last season. I’ve been pilloried continuously about being negative and talking rubbish. I said we wouldn’t score or create many chances and warned you’s that you would realise once the season started.

The facts should start to be hitting home after today’s game.

Pards always puts a positive spin on it. It’s his job. He knows deep down we are desperate for a top striker. He can’t say it for fear of destroying Rivières confidence. Bootsy doesn’t get that, but that’s more of a reflection on Bootsy than Pards. 😉

Sorry, I know Ice will say I’m point scoring, but it’s simply being honest and frustrated at the pathetic situation we are in and the inability of The Clueless Crew to pick up on it.

They just blame it all on Pardew. 🙄

      (Quote)

  27. Boots – you would think that if pre match Pardew is saying he expects Palace to come defensively, then he’d put 2 up top to give Rivière the help & support he’s missed in the opening games.
Get some pace up front and run Hangaland ragged.

      (Quote)

  28. @Richie

Yeah mate. My point should be. We won’t score more than one goal. It’s football and the odd goal can come our way no matter how bad we are. Take the Gills game

But I fully expect us to draw a blank and the odds are I’m my favour IMO.

      (Quote)

  29. This is going to be a close game I believe. 0-0 or 1-0.

Anyway I see Remy is having talks with Chelsea – why would he choose them over a loan move to us? Baffling… 😯

      (Quote)

  30. Troy…Your point would be that splinter up your ****…or is your point from “point scoring”? 😛 I know what you’re saying though…but the “happy clapper” in me says 3-1 (it’s my default prediction)
I’d still like to see Chucky get some game time, I’ve seen little of him but what I have I think he’s the better goal scorer (out of the fit players), I’ve seen a lot more of Riviere especially in the French league but he always needs a few clear chances to get a goal which we just aren’t creating and he just can’t do it up front on his own, it’s not his game.

      (Quote)

  31. Troy. … woah, my earlier post was a quote from Pardz, not my prediction! 😯

      (Quote)

  32. Thing I found strange this morning looking at transfer news (hoping for toon CH) is m/u are signing Blind cost 15/16 mil,yet we payed 5/7 for Jong from the same club, they are roughly same age and the same level, makes me suss,do they know something about Jong that we don’t – 😕 —

      (Quote)

  33. Ice – it could be his injury curse lowering his price.
I doubt we will get a full season from him either.

      (Quote)

  34. Ice – could be they know Man U have more money than sense!!.

Remy is going to be Chelsea’s 3rd choice CF, which could mean the end of his international career. I get its a bigger club in more competitions, but surely as a footballer you want to be playing week in week out and scoring goals?!. Lukaku didnt even get a chance, Ba warmed to bench – what does he think he’s going to get from the move?!

      (Quote)

  35. @Sharpy @50

the prestige of the Champions league, good money, London

this was evident when he knocked us back for 15k fans at loftus Rd.

      (Quote)

  36. Mark – I understand it, I just don’t get it (if that makes sense). I mean, how many games does he think he’s gonna play in the CL ahead of Costa and Drogba. The likelihood is he’s gonna play against the likes of Leyton Orient in the FA cup, so Costa can be rested.

      (Quote)

  37. I think Remy’s losing the plot joining Chelsea over us. Okay his got champions league football and a better chance of winning silverware and more money. He would of been first choice here, utter madness! Finishing 10th is more exciting.

      (Quote)

  38. Well, after today, I hope not only the alarm bells are heard loud and clear by The Clueless Crew but more importantly the regime.

Two days left to buy someone. Sorry, to loan someone. There’s nee way we ‘ll buy anyone.

      (Quote)

  39. You might get a shock regarding Remy.

The stage is now set for him at Chelsea. He will flourish there. A natural goalscorer with plenty of supply.

He could well find himself a regular.

      (Quote)

  40. Troy I can’t see anyone joining either but I live in false hope which is better than nothing. We desperately need a proven goal scorer but Ashley will be smiling all the way to the bank.

That’s what I say to everyone, including you. If I’m having a bit banter which includes point scoring, then just ignore it.

It’s a blog and all different personalities go on. I never understand it when people complain that some hog the thread. Work around it like you would in a bar.

Anyway, crack on with your TV deal and I will crack on with my point scoring. I feel my point scoring will have me 21 pts ahead of the clueless crew after 7 games. 😉

      (Quote)

  50. cheers ice 😉

Just ignore Troy mate, everyone knows he can’t resist getting on peoples tits, upsetting people, making people leave the blog and telling everyone he knows best and the rest of us are clueless. 😯

Thats why we love him, he’s special 😆 and the blog wouldnt be the same without our little basket-case 😛
