The biggest positive from the weekend!

A nice touch!

Early in the second half of the game against Hull, I really thought we were looking directly down the barrel of another home defeat. We had just gone two goals behind and Hull were looking all but assured of the three points given our poor start to the season and our history of struggling to get premiership points from losing positions. There seemed little hope and when Papiss Cisse was warming up down the touch line before coming on, I really didn’t hold much hope of him being able to change the game in any way. To my pleasant surprise, Cisse immediately looked lively and his first touch was more than assured, he seemed to have a bit of zest back into his game. I was even more pleasantly surprised when Cisse’s first shot at goal rocketed in between the keeper and the near post, it was an excellent natural finish after some good build up play. Even down two goals to one, I was still not holding much hope but Cisse once again found the back of the net from close range to bring the scores level.

The pleasing thing for me was the way that he took his chances. He seemed to have none of the baggage that plagued him last season and he finished both chances like the Cisse of old. I am not suggesting that he has found his old form and will knock in goals every game but it was nice to see him not over thinking things and simply doing what he does best. I really hope this gives him a confidence boost for what looks to be a very tough season ahead. Couple this with the fact that our forward line really hasn’t got a lot of premier league experience and the importance of a fit an firing Cisse really does come to the fore.

  1. Another defeat tonight for me.

I hardly think there’s a difference nowadays between our so called fringe players and our first teamers.

It’s not that the fringe players have improved, it’s because our first teamers are worse. 😉

  2. Some how, i always feel that league cup is the best chance we can go as far as possible. In fact, the minimum is to get to 5th round… Looking at the remaining clubs, if by some luck we can avoid PL clubs.

Anything can happen. Bolton win Chelsea, Sheffield Wed win Man city, Forest win Spurs…. all left is Liverpool and some PL clubs..

Hopefully, we can win Crystal Palace tonight. I can’t watch….

  3. Sounds like it could be;

    Elliot,

    Janmaat, Colo, Taylor, Hiadara

    Obertan, Anita, Abeid, Sameobi,

    Riviere, Perez

  4. BB / Stuart – or it could just be because West Ham started marketing their corporate boxes and seats at the Olympic Stadium this week and needed a nice ambitious headline. The stadium capacity itself even if worth an extra £20m a season (less, since it’s not all profit) won’t get them any nearer CL football compared with current top-6 budgets, and within five years Dippers, Everton and Spurs will all be playing in similar or bigger capacity stadia.

  5. Ice I think that’s the work of the PR man we’ve been hearing about I bet. Pards does himself no favors when ever he speaks so they probably don’t want to put him out there any more than they have to to try and calm the situation

  6. MDS could be that mate, great to have a manager that cannot talk to press/fans,mind I would happy not to hear his **** lol, something stinks imo

  7. GTE – You see you are just bitten by the NUFC bollocks machine. Just because NUFC are complete **** holes who can’t be trusted to be sincere with anything they say doesn’t mean every other club is.

  8. I wish West Ham were as ambitious about pumping a bit more cash into the stadium refit as they are their PL targets. Be nice for the tax payers not to have to sub em so much, Still I keep forgetting how ski9nt they are .

  9. Ice I think they’re just biding their time for a few weeks and hope they grab a couple of wins and the whole thing blows over. Ashley clearly views firing Pards as a last resort that he wants to avoid.

  10. GTE – spot on, there’s your reasoning for such ludicrous comments from Brady.

Stu – I thought the back end of last season was coz we lost Cabaye and all that rubbish – but now you tell me it’s coz players and manager took their foot off the pedal.
Maybe this season then we don’t have a **** squad, maybe they just haven’t started playing yet so as not to peak too soon?! 🙄

  11. Come on Sharpy, lets not split hairs! I have never said that it was 100% Cabaye leaving. It had a massive effect on the form of the team from January onwards and as we had more or less achieved what was required (Top 10) for that season effort waned. A combination of them two is the accepted reasons.

But, please don’t let that get in the way of the trance ashley has you in. NUFC aren’t capable of anything else, you believe it because they are telling you. Weak!

  12. Stuart – we’ve been here before. The financial gap even to Spurs is enormous. We can grow our commercial revenue and international merchandising, and we can attract larger sponsorship deals, but only if we become more attractive through on-pitch success. Even then, located outside London, we’ll stay a long way short of Spurs. We could try to fund that success to get commercial growth through debt, which is effectively what clubs like Hull, Stoke, West Ham, Swansea and Saints are doing, but I don’t expect any of them to seriously threaten the CL any time soon, and owner after owner will look to cash out, as the guy at Hull is doing right now. I agree that we should be targeting Everton’s performance (over the Moyes years) and don’t have the ambition to do so, but there is a lower limit to our realistic ambition now than there was in the 90s.

I had you down as better than resorting to childish insults. Disappointing, but there we go – shame like.

You are entirely free to believe what you like. I don’t believe for a second that Pardew knew by Jan that they had done enough to achieve 10th spot. There were still far to many points to play for – and even going into the last 5 or 6 games was twitching on getting that all important 3 points to make 10th safe.
Ashley works on incentive, so the team would have got a bonus for finishing 10th. But be sure that had they finished higher, they would have got a bigger pay out. 10th was minimum requirement, it wasnt the target as such.

  14. MDS your spot on there mate, thing is the wind has been blowing for a couple seasons, its getting to gale force now lol

      (Quote)

  15. GTE – I’m not sure the teams you mentioned are particularly in debt to be fair. If they are their dedt to equity ratio will be absolutely managable and acceptable. But don’t you worry about that.

Before Ashley arrived we had a turnover way and above Spurs’ and that was nothing to do with debt. It was about maximising our commercial revenues and having a stadium full every week, selling merchandise etc. We also had CL football which increased it further but when both Spurs and us had no CL we still had a turnover much higher. Difference is Levy is absolutely determined to increase revenue and improve the club – Ashley isn’t! Also the fact Spurs are in London is irrelevant in things like sponsors as it’s about maximum exposure, something Spurs get a lot more of being on TV more here and abroad.

There’s no real reason why we cannot compete financially with Spurs but for some reason post Ashley they’ve not just overtaken us they have sped right past us and are on a different Road – one Ashley will never take!

Did you know NUFC don’t even have a Commercial Director?

  16. More comments from wor Alan and Johnny C.
“I can’t possibly say anything about my tactics for upcoming games. It’s far too complicated to get into anyhow. It’s all here in my little notebook. Johnny C can you add anything?”
Johnny C: “Yes, I’ll swear to it. It’s right there in his little notebook. It’s bloody brilliant is what it is. And if I hear as much as a boo from wor supporters somebody’s heed’s coming off!”

  17. Some final thoughts from Percy before the match:
“Many of you have me entirely wrong. I’m a man of the people. I’m a rambler and a gambler and a sweet talking ladies man…..well err enough on that for now. As I was saying I’m terribly misunderstood. I have chest hair. I love trilbies. Why am I not more popular here? It’s not fair!!! You hear me!!! It’s just not fair!!!”
    Good points made there Alan.

  18. And some final thoughts from Johnny C. for good measure:
“Give this man a fair chance. He deserves it. He’s the king. Give him say 3 or 4 more seasons minimum. I know we can finish top 19 with wor Alan in charge. Or possible given enough time top 18. Is that too much to ask? A few more seasons?”
    Ta Johnny C.

  19. But back to my original point; the club state cups aren’t a priority and we can’t conpete with top 6. Begay is Pardew suppose to say in his team talks? What would any manager say to the players after hearing the real ambitions of the club?

We are rotten to the core and everything that Ashley does ears away at te club in every way.

This club can not be anything but mediocre acting like this.

  20. Official team for tonight

  21. Close, but no cigar
Newcastle: Elliot; Janmaat, Coloccini (c), S.Taylor, Dummett; Abeid, Colback; Obertan, Armstrong, Ameobi; Riviere
Subs: Alnwick, Haidara, Anita, Sissoko, Cabella, Ferreyra, Perez

  22. Stuart. Like Sharpy, I am guilty of being in that trance, assuming that a fellow blogger like you wouldn’t use cheap patronising comments.

I’m not disputing the points about Spurs, and the fact that we have wasted the greatest commercial growth opportunity clubs have ever had. I am simply pointing out that to try to claw that back would be a long, difficult and debt-laden road. The fact is also that Spurs themselves illustrate that the road almost never ends with CL football.

And before you assert that the clubs I mention aren’t in debt, you had better check their latest finances – not pretty reading. Of that group Saints have now started to balance the books, by the summer sales they had.

I wholly agree that Newcastle could perform far better with a more ambitious ownership, but see the level of ambition as being alongside Everton and Spurs.

  23. according to the club were lining up 4231 again

and abeid is anchoring the mid with colback

poor abeid he goes out on loan, plays a more advanced role, scores goals and assists, comes back here to a team that cant score and has to sit in a holding role. 🙁

  24. You would have thought Perez would have got game time ahead of the Alien. At least Parsnip resisted bringing back the ineffective Anita

  25. GTE – Please check them clubs accounts you mentioned. As I said, if they are indeed in debt their debt to equity ratios will be absolutely fine, in fact better than most companies on the FTSE. You really used the wrong clubs there I am afraid to make a point.

Every business runs on debt, this is how they invest and grow.

  29. Well there are so many reasons why we won’t win this now. one being I can’t remember the last time we won after going a goal behind and the other is we do have trouble scoring goals.

More bothering though was Janmats response to the penalty. He was laughing! Think that shows the attitude to the cup of the club has dropped down to the players.

      (Quote)

  30. doubt he was laughing for that reason 🙄

will tactical mastermind Pardew be able to tinker to 2 up front.. 😯

Rivi makes Luque look like Pele 😛
