Match Day Banter – Newcastle v Southampton

To say Southampton have been this seasons surprise package is an understatement! After losing so many good players they have barely faltered at all this season and they currently sit in third place after the first 21 games. They also thumped us 4-0 at home and the return match looks like being another tough game. However, our form at home has been good (W5 D3 L1) so I am expecting our lads to put up a spirited fight and try and come away with all three points.

Mags v Saints
Mags v Saints

Apart from the African Cup absentees we have pretty much our usual players to select from with the added bonus of Santon being fit for duty. Whether he is selected or not is another matter but it would be good to see him get some minutes under his belt.  Here is who we have to choose from

Newcastle United: Alnwick, Krul, Coloccini, Dummett, Good, Haidara, Janmaat, Santon, Streete, Williamson, Anita, Bigirimana, Cabella, Colback, Sissoko, Vuckic, Ameobi, Armstrong, Ferreyra, Gouffran, Perez, Riviere.

Southampton do have some injury concerns. Morgan Schneiderlin (thigh) and Victor Wanyama (hamstring) are out and to be honest it is good to see that Wanyama is not going to play. He does a lot of good work in the middle of the park and breaks up a lot of opposition attacks. He won’t be missed as far as I am concerned. Here is who Southampton have to choose from.

Southampton : K Davis, Forster, Gazzaniga, Bertrand, Clyne, Fonte, Gardos, Targett, Cork, S Davis, Isgrove, McQueen, Reed, Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Elia, Long, Pelle.

Based on current form you would have to give this one to Southampton. In the last six games they have a very good record (W4 D1 L1) when you compare that to ours (W1 D1 L4) it seems that we will be up against it. But this is the Premier League and on any given day any team can win. So my prediction is a 2-1 victory and the first three points for John Carver.

Howay the Lads!

  1. Wow, fatty has 70% off razors, grab a great deal before you cut your wrists…

If we were playing good footy and winning games, no one would give a **** about fatty… we need that new manager asap!!
This limbo is hurting everyone from the players to the fans and it needs to be sorted!

  2. As Kim said, thought we played ok but stands out a mile about the need of another forward
As for the pen, the 2nd half call for one was a defo and when I saw it again close up on match of the day I was even more sure. Bloke 2 seats down from me in east stand is a former ref. it’s funny watching when all fans are complaining and he sits there saying ref got it spot on, but when he is up and complaing you know the ref is wrong. He was up and going mad about the hand ball one. The 1st half one not but 2nd half he knew it was a pen and went mad about ref performance all game

  3. Krul was imo at fault for both goals his fitness/sharpness was just not there I also think he will be gone in the summer with the young Forrest keeper coming in jabba will cash in

  4. the quality of refereeing in general this season has been at times absolutely diabolical. The disallowed 3rd spurs goal yesterday was embarrasing… good job Vertonghen isn’t on 10 Grand a goal 😯 😯

  5. Simon, Yeah the sissoko one was not a pen, I said that during the game but hells bells, how did he not give that handball 😯 right in front of the stupid fool . 👿

      (Quote)

  6. Yea Kim some of the refs and linesmen should be banned for some games. As you said, spurs one was shocking

  7. MM I agree refs in the PL are jaw dropping at times,I am starting to think they have been “got at”its so bad its the only thing I agree with what Carver said theses guys are costing guys their jobs and clubs millions with no come back, they should be made to explain “why”they are full time now and well payed so should be called to book

  8. I’m all for tv instant replays tbh, I don’t believe it would slow down the game and even if it did so what ,at least justice would get done . Too much is at stake for all teams to rely on 3 guys being on their game for the full 90+ mins . Give the 4th official a monitor and problem solved .

  9. If they admitted got it wrong might make people feel a bit better tho not help results of course but be a start

  10. so which 3 clubs are more likely to get relegated than us ?
    Leicester ❓
    QPR ❓
    ? ❓
The match against Hull in a fortnight may well answer the last spot.

  11. The hand ball rule needs to be black and white. .if it hits your hand in the box..penalty!
Some will be unlucky but it would even out over time.. Then we wouldn’t have interpretive decisions. .

  12. Aussie, all I know is it was blatant and the whole bloody stadium saw it so how come he didn’t?, it’s just not good enough. Should we get relegated by 1 point, we will look back to that decision . And anyone who doesn’t think we are already in a relegation fight is deluding themselves. We badly need players back from injury but in the meantime Jabba has to get his wallet out and protect his investment or sell the **** up.

  13. AMF it still does not cover why the ref didn’t see or didn’t want to see it mate, bloody crooks everywhere lol

  14. I seen the game and thought we had more attempts, corners. A couple of penalty calls but overall I would say the best team lost. Once again it brings me back to the same old subject; we need another centre back. It’s money well spent if you find the right guy to replace Williamson. It’s an issue our owner has ignored time and time again. What makes it worse is our managers afraid to speak out encase it upsets Ashley. I want a manager that will fight for that extra player to come in. I want an owner that will provide funds and help the team as much as he can.

      (Quote)

  15. Agree Kim and Ice…not good enough… but if you remove the interpretation from the decision, the ref will have no choice but to pay the pen… when you have refs guessing whether it was deliberate or not, it’s bound to end up a cluster fuk
    .

  16. Stem – no offence fella but you say
” I want a manager that will fight for that extra player to come in. I want an owner that will provide funds and help the team as much as he can.”
    That’s what we all want.
That’s what I wanted Percy Parsnip to do after the 5th place finish.
Sadly it’s never going to happen with the current regime.

  17. We have a centre half and a goalie currently on loan at Nottingham Forest. They will both get a lot more game time next season playing for the toon.
Krul, Janmaat and Sissoko all out in the summer is my tip…

  18. The ref should be hauled before a panel to explain why he didn’t give a handball. It was right in front of him and clear as day.

His hand was raised and looked like he was protecting his face. That is intentional Shirley. (Surely)

      (Quote)

  19. Regarding handball the Law Makers now ask the referee to consider the proximity of the potential offender to the person last playing the ball, the speed of the ball and importantly whether the offender’s arms are in a natural or unnatural position.

So the question of intent is now, did the offender deliberately place his arms in an unnatural position to increase the chances of the ball hitting him?

If the answer to that is yes then it is correct to penalise that player even though it used to be argued that was “ball to hand”.

      (Quote)

  20. If you zoom in on the action, the Southampton players lips clearly show he said, ” see if you can get past my hands Geordie!”

    Despicable sportsmanship imo.

      (Quote)

  21. There is ****** all excuse for not bringing new players in right now. If as they say they are signing a coach and not a manager as they have no say on player recruitment then why are we not active in the transfer market. Not once have I heard or seen one single journo ask them about player recruitment at pressers, it’s all new coach and carver talk so far. Half these so called journos are a joke, never ask the real questions, ask them if we’ll be spending any of the tv cash this window and if not why not. Ask if we are actively searching for players and if so what positions. Twats of the highest order the lot of them.

      (Quote)

  22. Former Premier League referee David Elleray said the referee’s interpretation depends on whether the hand or arm is in an “unnatural” position at the point of contact.

David Elleray consults his assistant during a club
Referees often consult their assistants on decisions

“Referees look at two specifics – did the hand or arm go towards the ball or in a manner which would block the ball, or is the hand in a position where it would not normally be?” Elleray told BBC Sport.

“The challenging decisions are if the defending player spreads their arms to make themselves bigger.

“If the ball hits the arm then the referee must decide whether this action was to deliberately block the ball or whether the player has raised their arms to protect themselves – especially if the ball is hit at speed.”

The referee and referees’ assistants, therefore, have a matter of seconds to weigh up these factors, and take the appropriate action.

And there will always be at least one manager, 11 players and thousands of fans who will insist they have been hard done by.

  23. Kim – we are active in the transfer market, but don’t forget the number 1 rule.
    We must sell to buy
    No outgoings = No incomings
we’re not like any of the other 19 clubs in this league you know.

  24. The penalty shouldn’t have mattered anyway, had we been more clinical infront of goal and completed some of the many chances we actually did create.
No Lady Luck at SJP yesterday 🙁

      (Quote)

  25. The penalty was irrelevant in my mind. A small side show in what is a much bigger game at play. You get some decisions for you and some against you but when you consistently fail to put enough men in attacking positions and make elementary mistakes in defence you never deserve to get anything from a game.

      (Quote)

  26. Beardsley Boot’s There’s money there for a centre back and a quilty striker but Ashley won’t spend it. It’s inexcusable and dam right stupid at times!
Pardew was a creep, a total kiss *** and that’s why I’m glad his gone. He had no guts. Never stood up to Ashley, WHY ? The worst that could happen was he could get sacked and even then he lose’s nothing because he still gets paid. Kinnear was just a patsy.

  27. Any new players will need their ‘quilty’ all right 😉

I feel exactly the same, each year, same ****. theres a total lack of ambition, direction and hope. Why do fans keep turning up. we must be the thickest of the thick up here 🙄

I hope the lack of players / manager is something to do with Ashley wanting out..

  33. the Chron are either guessing or they know something, they keep hinting about a decent manager…

So is Newcastle’s lengthy recruitment process – they’d like to think of it as ‘due diligence’ – about to lead to them pulling a rabbit out of the hat? Those close to the club’s business said this week that it might well.

A mystery third way – not Carver and not Remi Garde, Frank de Boer, Thomas Tuchel or even Christopher Galtier – is being pursued.

Negotiations might even be relatively advanced.

Newcastle have certainly been surprised by the number of people who want the job, which is a positive. But why is it taking so long?

Well, delicate talks require nimble politicking and if a candidate is in a job that would explain away the delay.

      (Quote)

  34. Stem – Ill save you some time.
There is no credible alternative to Ashley’s money.
He will get what he wants so easily.
    The alternative is going bust.
Ashley knows the SPFA don’t want that to happen again.
Mash is pulling all the strings and laughing like a demonic joker

How can Ashley, a billionaire with a decent idea not make a real fist of Newcastle. With a little bit of cash it could of worked a treat. 🙄

  38. Mark his going to destroy Ranger’s f.c ( poor bastards) before he destroy’s us. He will take the stadium and training ground and leave them nothing. There will be a lot of angry scotsman after his blood, his very brave is Ashley.

Beardsley Boots we will probably be saddled with sports direct signs for the next 10 years. Paying back the 129 million debt.

  39. Now I’m waiting for a new coach – with trepidation. I saw Paul Jewell’s name and froze. God knows who they’ll choose.

Didn’t think we were too bad yesterday apart from Krul’s error. What struck me though was them playing exactly like we did when we beat Spurs, City and Liverpool. There’s no way through a packed defence like that especially when they’re good defenders in the air.

      (Quote)

  40. Georgio – What did you see to make you think we didn’t do too bad? From my view point it looked like we defended badly and created nothing. I don’t think Forster had one save to make did he?
