Game On! Manchester City v Newcastle United

logo
United travel to champions Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off).
The Magpies go into the fixture on the back of a three-game unbeaten run which has seen a victory at Hull followed by two draws against Stoke and Crystal Palace.
The sides have already met twice this season. On the opening day, Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners.
However, United gained revenge a couple of months later when they beat the holders of the Capital One Cup 2-0, with Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko on target.
Newcastle will be without Paul Dummett after he injured his knee cap in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last time out and will likely be out for the rest of the season.
That means head coach John Carver heads to Manchester with captain Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Daryl Janmaat and Massadio Haidara as his only fit senior defenders, while Remy Cabella (knee) is a doubt.
Nevertheless, Carver remains in confident mood and told his club’s official website: “We are going there knowing that we are playing against a good side, but we are not going to be fearful because we’ve proved that we can go there and get a result.”

Wilfried Bony will be available to make his long-awaited Manchester City debut. The Ivory Coast international striker Bony moved from Swansea City to the Etihad Stadium in January on the eve of embarking on a successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign with his country. Toure is also back and is expected to slot straight back into the starting line-up against Newcastle, while Bony will compete with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for a place alongside top scorer Sergio Aguero as City boss Pellegrini has the pleasure of selecting from his full complement of attacking options.

Man City Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany (C), Mangala, Kolarov, Nasri, Fernandinho, Toure, Silva, Dzeko, Aguero

Subs Caballero, Demichelis, Clichy, Lampard, Fernando, Navas, Bony

Newcastle Utd Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini (c), Williamson, Haïdara; Sissoko, Anita, Colback; Pérez, Cissé, Gouffran.

Subs Woodman, R.Taylor, Abeid, Obertan, Ameobi, Armstrong, Rivière.

  1. MM @ 225. Are you sure he wasn’t pretending to be a season ticket holder (until caught out … again)?

      (Quote)

  2. Munich – that would be me Stu is talking about 😉
I believe that Santon isn’t as good defensively as Dummett, and offensive Haidara is better and both are left footed so are more natural to that position.

Stu – do you really believe that Santon is the answer though? – coz that’s all you are prattling on about at the moment!. He was a right footed LB when he was with us – what do you propose we do with that? – would you drop play him instead of Haidara? – would that make Willo a better CB?, would it improve Colo?. Would you drop Willo for Santon? Then you have him out of position, but do you believe that would be an improvement?.

You keep having cheap digs about me not being bothered we don’t have a right footed LB, so come on mate – tell me how you would use Santon to solve our defensive problems then?

      (Quote)

  3. Santon would improve the defence – simple as that. He’s a much more accomplished full back than Hadaira. In fact I’m not sure I’ve seen Jadaira have a good game yet. That might be his age but it just makes the penny pinching decision to let Santon go all the more ridiculous. We now have 3 fit defenders. Argue all you like Sharpy but the decision to let him go has been a disaster and I said it would be and you said you didn’t see the problem. You still don’t by the sounds of it, which is utterly bizarre.

      (Quote)

  4. And before anyone insinuates I think Santon would have made a difference today I don’t think that. Today’s performance was conceived from the top and is due to poor squad building and penny pinching. The players have up at 2-0 and that’s because there’s nothing to play for again in the second half of the season.

In other games a defender of Santons quality could make all the difference – especially as it is very clear now that teams Attack us down our left as they are a weakness.

      (Quote)

  5. Sharpy: I will answer for Stuart though I think he will have a go at me for doing it 🙂 Santon might provide cover for Janmaat who appears to be injured. The other option is Anita and most on here seem to be done with him. Water under the bridge though innit.

      (Quote)

  6. It is black humour that the unqualified apprentice accountant, Charnley, was saying the fans shouldn’t get on Carvers back before that performance. Echoes of Mr. Ugly having a go at fans at the Southampton game. He asked a fan to meet him at the training ground on the Monday after that game for a reckoning. Would you have either of these men in charge of an allotment never mind a multi-multi million pound organisation?

      (Quote)

  7. Big Dave- If Janmaat is injured, I see no other choice than put Satka in, and tell him to play defensive and no nonsense Full back, similar to what Dummett does when he plays there, Id try that, we have nothing to lose.

      (Quote)

  8. Cholo: I think Taylor is odds on to start at right back against Villa because we have no alternatives. Anita????

Williamson will start again as well.

So that will be a permacrock (RyanTaylor) and accident waiting to happen starting, a player who is worse than Championship level (Williamson), another who wanted to ****** off back to Argentina coz he was ***** whipped and Hadiara who has potential but will be left exposed with that lot playing next to him.

Happy times. I am surprised Malcolm McDonald’s head hasn’t exploded yet.

      (Quote)

  9. Eric Sykes, Satka is an alternative to try in my opinion. And for Raylor, wont bother if he plays CM for Anita with JC injured

      (Quote)

  10. Stu – so you are saying that you’d play Santon in place of Haidara? – and you think that would fix our defence do you?.
Willo is ***** and Colo is bang out of form!. The problem is CB not LB mate. It’s wasnt a disaster to let Santon go, it was a disaster to let another window go by without improving at CB.
If Santon hadn’t gone on loan, he’d be on the bench yesterday – I’m certain of that. That means he would improve our options, not our defence.
If Santon isn’t in their plans then I have no issues with him being moved out, but he should have been replaced – or at least a recall clause in the loan, likewise with Streete & Mbabu.

      (Quote)

  11. i bet you Charnley is spluttering in his conflakes
this morning. “the fans need to stand by john carver and give him there support”. what a joke. it’s only a matter of time before ashley is feeling his collar too.
villa really is a must win game now, the fans need to get behind the team to bring home the points.

      (Quote)

  12. **** me Sharpy, do you not understand the basic principles of sport? If you have better pkayers it means your team is better than it is woth worse players. Santon is better than Hadaira and that’s undisputed. Therefore he would improve our defence. Look how many times Hadaira is too close to the centre half, allowing opposition players space and time on our left – it’s crazy!

You make me laugh out loud by the fact you don’t think Santon would improve the defence even though he’s better than the current left back! It’s like saying replacing Williamson with Cahill wouldnt improve our defence at all because Colo is still playing badly. Get a grip!

In fact I can’t continue to debate with someone who is so pig headed that they still won’t accept that letting Santon go was a mistake even though we have defenders dropping like flies.

      (Quote)

  13. When you look at who we have hired as MD, is it any wonder we have what we have:

    * Chris Mort, a City Lawyer
    * Dennis Wise, a violent dwarf but at least with football experience
    * Derek Lliambas, a casino manager prone to streaking at SJP
    * JFK, a sweary crazy old man, but again had football experience
    * Lee Charnley, a glorified accountant I think, but does anybody really know anything about him?

Football is a business nowadays and it is quite amazing that someone who is so savvy in his other business would hire such a string of incompetents.

On the bright side it is Villa next and that is the perfect bounce back game. Please don’t f@ck it up and please don’t let Janmaat’s “tight groin” turn into another season ending injury.

      (Quote)

  14. Jesus Christ, Munich! Talk about hypocritical! For the last week you’ve been castigating me for going to the matches ‘supporting’ the players and now you’re telling everyone that the supporters need to get behind the players next week to get a win! Make your mind up. Personally I couldn’t give a **** whether we win or lose. Every dropped point is nearer a positikn dropped which is money lost for Jabba.

      (Quote)

  15. Eric – I don’t think you’re quite unstanding Mikey Ashley. He’s only interested in the club making money and Charnley isn’t certainly doing that for him so as far as he’s concerned he’s doing a great job.

You need to stop thinking of NUFC as a football club, it’s no longer one of those.

      (Quote)

  16. Janmaat has a tight groin and our owner is a tight ****, Tim Sherwood will be rubbing his hands after watching that yesterday.

      (Quote)

  17. One thing I whole heartedly agree with Stu about is what style of football are we playing at the moment?!.

Our back 4 look so disorganised and seem to have no communication between them at all – which is worrying because Im old enough to remember an Everton back 4 with Dave Watson in it and he was good at both of those things.
Midfielder wise, Anita is very poor IMO – I haven’t seen him have a good game yet. He did ok in the 2nd half against Hull but a **** 1st half. Colback looks lost and Sissoko has stopped these driving runs – has he given up this season or is he playing to instruction?.
Perez looks exhausted bless him and desperately needs a rest. Gouffran simply isn’t good enough and shouldn’t have started yesterday IMO. Cisse needs help and assistance.
Shearer highlighted on MOTD last night how much time we gave City on the ball yesterday – he also showed how fast City were closing the ball down when we had it and they were 3-0 up.
It’s all well and good Carver saying that you go out with a game plan and then find yourself 1-0 down after a minute – I’m sorry but the game plan doesn’t change – you still have 89mins plus to implement that game plan. That didn’t happen yesterday! – we totally capitulated.

      (Quote)

  18. Stuart: you are probably right about us no longer operating as a football club but then if we are strictly a business then why hire people with no knowledge of the sport or crazies to run it?

I don’t really mind a few fringe players going to Rangers even though I might have ranted about it (I can’t be bothered to look back to see if I did). However, sending Santon out is just stupid. At the very least he was decent cover. He’s also right footed so might be cover for right back, no?

I am sure I am overreacting after yesterday’s debacle and that Williamson is really Paolo Maldini in disguise 🙂

      (Quote)

  19. Stu – I think you have romantic memories of Santon mate. He really wasn’t that good a full back consistently anyway – and to suggest the gulf in quality between Santon and Haidara is that of Cahill to Willo is just ridiculous.
Santon positionally wasn’t that good in all honesty, and like I say, if he was with us yesterday he’d have been on the bench.
I agree that Haidara tucks in to the CB – but so does Janmaat – which suggests to me it’s in the coaching.

Stu – our defenders aren’t falling like flies coz Santon was loaned out – hindsight is a wonderful thing. But yet again, LB isn’t the problem – it’s CB that’s the problem and when we loaned Santon out we had Haidara fit and Dummett on the verge of return. Janmaat was fit with Raylor on the verge of return – but we only had Willo & Colo at CB – both of whom were is **** poor form and Saylor long term injured & just sold MYM – so we had no senior or experienced cover for Willo or Colo. I say again, that the mistake wasn’t letting Santon go, the mistake was not bringing anyone in – regardless of Santon.

  20. Troy @ 242 I asked Bris the question at 217 because IMO it’s clear that he is reffering to someone on here, but doesn’t have the guts to name the person/persons he is talking about.
But then I am not really surprised that he wouldn’t answer as that seems to be the norm for Bris.

  22. Life is cruel. I was born in Newcastle not Manchester or Madrid. I have never quite understood the philosophy at NUFC but then I can’t understand how Robbie Savage is a national pundit when he can hardly string a coherent sentence together. I want his life, be utterly average as a footballer and a complete ****** and get rich on it. But I digress. After a certain age you get to expect this from NUFC, you just have to live with it.

      (Quote)

  23. stuart79@249, what is it that you don’t understand about my statement ? if you are one of the lemmings who turns up at sjp and stuffs money under ashley’s matress then you should stand up and support the team against villa. easy to understand surely ?

now, if one has joined the toon army armchair branch and stays away out of protest, that is also all well and good.

      (Quote)

  24. eric sykes@257, stop bigging up robbie savage, he doesn’t deserve it. jobs for the boys, typical uk / media / establishment.

      (Quote)

  25. Eric – that’s my point about Santon though – he’s cover, and cover for full back only – as he’s not a CB.
I Stu was saying we were stupid to allow MYM go then I’d be more inclined to agree as he could cover CB and full back.
The fact we let Santon go isn’t the big issue for me – the fact that letting him & MYM go in the same window without strengthening our defence is the issue. Santon wasn’t/isn’t the answer to all our problems – that’s my point.

      (Quote)

  26. Eric – Ashley has employed an accountant as MD. That says it all. What does he need to know about football when Ashleys not interested in football?

Letting Santon go, Pardew go and selling Mbiwa were all decisions motivated by money. He knows we’re not going to go down so he’s made the decision to make extra cash. Charnely doesn’t really need to understand football for that.

      (Quote)

  27. on the plus side we had 4 players yesterday who looked like in the right team they could hold thre own against man city. perez, sissoko, cisse and janmaat.
for the life of me we cannot afford to carry anita, gouffon in midfield. the blokes just aren’t good enough.

i would have been interested to see how the game progressed if we hadn’tconceded the early goal, and if city were without yaya toure.

at the same time a few of the city goals were sublime. i suppose thats what you get when you pay the big spondoolicks and expect thirty bob joureymen like gouffron, anita and williamson to perform like world stars -it just doesn’t work, surprise surprise.

      (Quote)

  28. Crazy how some people don’t seem to understand how having an Italian international defender in the squad is better than not having him in the squad. It stinks of the make do attitude of the club. it just seems to be forgotten that better players in all positions would improve our team or is that too radical a thought for some on here?

I assume by some peoples logic we should have let Riviere go out on loan as it’s clear he’s not the answer to our problems? Would that have been acceptable leaving only a half for Cisse and a knackered Perez as our options?

But then again I never once said Santon was the answer to our problems… More bullshit! It’s a simple process as I point out above – he’s the best left back at the club so why let him go? Might as well let Cisse go or Sisssoko go as we do have players who can replace them. Never mind that they’re not as good as them – who cares…

      (Quote)

  29. MM: doesn’t the clubby, bantabulousness of it all get on your tits a bit though. We have BEIN Sports from Dubai here and Andy Gray somehow has to let me know that he was on the golf course with Shearer and won a few quid. Oh really Andy, that’s very important for me to know, now how about the fitba?

      (Quote)

  30. Stu – A bit snidey that last post of yours!, instead of trying to take cheap digs why don’t you address the posts to the ‘people’ you are speaking to!. I notice above that Dave is highlighting Bris of doing the same thing. Cowardly really.

Like I say, you really have romantic memories of Santon if you rate him as our best LB. He was kept out of the team by Raylor, Dummett & Haidara.

For you to start rattling on about loaning other players out is just a nonsensical ramble.

      (Quote)

  31. SHARPY – Is that clear enough for you? I was ‘Rattling’ on about loaning Santon out in the day it happened. You see I could see what was happening and how short we were defensively. You couldn’t and still can’t.

Oh and please let me know how Raylor has been keeping him out of the team? He’s been injured and as for Dummett and Hadaira keeping him out of the team, it would be pretty difficult for Santon to play with his ankle in plaster for 6 months! When he was fit he hadn’t pkayed for 6 months so he’s not likely to go straight back in was he? You really have no substantive argument on this. You didn’t answer my question about it being ok to let Sissoko or Cisse go on the same basis that we have players who could play instead of them?

But dear oh dear, you don’t think Santon is better than Dummett or Hadaira. Enough said. I won’t be replying to you anymore as I am completely bored looking at your pathetic, crumbling reasoning and your pig headedness is doing you no favours.

      (Quote)

  32. I notice Carver didn’t run over to the away supporters to applaud them yesterday. He was straight down the tunnel the coward!

      (Quote)

  33. Well a lot of fans think we won’t go down as there 3/4teams worse than us “really” have they watched these 3/4 teams play I’ve watched them only a couple of times and I don’t think so they have one thing we don’t, effort and a bit of pride in their shirts and fight and a club that cares,we have none of those things imo we will be real lucky to get another two points its the CCC for us,if we do stay up with all the TV money coming in we need to spend 100mil to stay in mid-table will it happen,no way jabba would have a heart attack just thinking about it

      (Quote)

  34. Stu – that fine, don’t reply mate, but don’t be a little ***** and make snidey cheap dig comments 😉

      (Quote)

  35. Stuart79- The is issue about Haidara is that when Sammy plays, he does the dirty work to allow his left back to be comfortable defensively. This has been key for us, but hey Sammy is Shola’s brother, cant be that good lol. Gouffran and Anita are worst than Willo, as with them, cant expect too much in offemse

      (Quote)

  36. Icedog: what they don’t have is points and their record of accumulating points means they are highly likely to finish below us. We are 10 points ahead of the 4th bottom club with only 12 games to go. Whatever the current quality of squads, effort or football we are extremely unlikely to get relegated. I bet we are a 100 to 1 or better to go down at the bookies.

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy TBH I thought Santon was the best LB we had and I dont think he was kept out of the side by the players you mention.
I believe he was kept out of the side by injury then the regime decided that they could do without him and his wage.
As for my post about Bris the reason I said it is that Bris will quickly drop in and come of with his snide comments then disappear again, IMO he very rarely engages in debate so when he has a dig at bloggers you never know what bloggers he is having a dig at.
Yeah I know Stu and others including myself will use ‘some’ or ‘ people’ term but it is usually clear who it is or , but if you dont know who its aimed at you can ask them/me and it will be made clear. But you can ask Bris several times which I have done before but he will never answer.

      (Quote)

  38. Cholo – Hadaira is still learning the game. He’s not played too many games for us and I don’t think it’s fair on him or the supporters who have paid good money for him to be thrown straight in and play every game however bad he is. You don’t learn like that. Clearly Santon is the better player so he would improve us in that area. Yes we are still poor in the middle but look at how many goals are created from our left and it’s clear Hadaira isn’t ready yet. But hey who cares – the seasons over. Well apart from the most important people at any club – the fans.

      (Quote)

  39. Stuart79- Im a fan of Santon, but Raylor was more consistent than him when we finished 5th, but Haidara aint.got nofhing on him even if left footed.

      (Quote)

  40. Ice the thing I like about the 3/4 teams is that they all show some fight and bottle to try to get out of the bottom.
Lee Dixon said several times during the game that our players look like their season is over and they allready have the flip flops on, and they show no desire, and I agree with him 100% we have no leaders or fight

      (Quote)

  41. Ice – I don’t disagree with what you’re saying those sides have that we don’t – but what we have that they don’t is the points already on the board – and that is likely to be our only saving grace this season IMO.
As gritty as the likes of Burnley are playing, they aren’t really picking up the points & I don’t see 3 of those bottom 4 sides picking up enough points to put us in there – but it’s certainly mathematically, and after yesterday’s performance very possible.
I think Villa is a big game, coz if we loose that one then the rot and doubt sets in and then it could well be free fall.

      (Quote)

  42. Cholo – Yes Raylor played a lot at left back that season but it was Santons first season so he was settling in. We can’t rely on him now due to his injuries. Whichever way we look at it, not one sane or Compos Mentis person would still think it was a good idea for him to leave on loan.

      (Quote)

  43. Icedog: just looked it up on the betting site Paddy Power and they have us at 90/1 to get relegated. The bookies usually get it right more often than not.

      (Quote)

  44. It’s chickens coming home to roost. MYM and Santon should still be at the club and only greed has stopped that.

I can’t for the life of me see why Abeid isn’t starting. He’s way better than Gouffran and Anita. There was a moment in the 2nd half when he crashed through 2 tackles came out with the ball and looked up and there was no one to pass to. Kid did his nut and rightly so! It’s attitude like that and Dummett that we desperately need. Instead we get Gouffran needing five yards of space to control the ball. Willo needs 10. Anita is just too small.

    Carver’s rubbish.

      (Quote)

  45. Ice – 32 points will see us go down, however I find it incredible we won’t pick up at least 3 points in the last 12 games or whatever is left, but even 35 is no guarantee. Do I think we will get to 40? it will be very difficult.

      (Quote)

  46. Ice there’s 3 teams 10 points below us. With goal difference that’s 11.
We’re ***** I know but it would take some doing to get relegated. A win and a draw will probably do it as they would then need 16 points. Can’t see any of them getting that.

      (Quote)

  47. SHARPY do you not think we are already in free fall as I do,I also think villa will beat us,they have a c/f coming back to form they have pace in their sidend a new manager, tell me please without Colback in the side “who” is going to score for us in the last three games we have had one shot on target in each game sorry I just cannot see it

      (Quote)

  48. Dave – thanks for clearing that up and respect to you for defending your pal, but it was a ***** comment!. He said a few posts earlier that he didn’t want to continue the debate – then posts that comment clearly directed at me. If you don’t want to discuss the matter then that’s fine – I’m happy for us to have different view and he calls me pig headed – but he is equally so. Sometimes we all have to agree to disagree, but Stu wants to keep going until he converts opinion or in some vain attempt to get people to admit he was right – big deal! Does that leave the club in a better position?.
If you/he wants to end the discuss that’s fine, but don’t then post cheap digs – as we are all entitled to our opinion – and as the recently promoted ‘blog master’ I’d hope you’d endorse that 😆

      (Quote)

  49. Icedog: that would mean getting zero from the next 12 games. That is unheard of. We have Villa, Leicester, Mackems, Swansea, West Brom and QPR in those 12 games. I will send you 100 pounds if we go down. You can hold me to it.

  54. Dave – I would direct you to Stus last post to Cholo as further evidence of snidey cheap comments ;-). And Troy refers to Stu as a straight shooter 😆

Ice – I see us falling, I just don’t see clubs below us gathering the momentum to put us in the ****. I think Leicester are as good as down. QPR are in a similar boat in that if Austin doesn’t score for them, they have no goals – and they are 10 points behind us. Villa may improve, but I’m not sure they will close the gap – maybe. I don’t see Burnley closing the gap, and the scum have big problems at the moment as well.
If we survive it will be because 3 teams are worse than us, not because we deserve it.

      (Quote)

  55. ERIC I love your faith man keep it up mate,I had it for many years but jabba is knocking it out of me.as for the teams you think we will get points from I can only see the QPR game where we will get anything that’s how bad we have been “trying” to play any more injury (which is likely) then we are in the ****

  56. I’m no longer allowed to be a ‘straight shooter’ as people take offence to the truth being so direct.

  57. Icedog: it is not faith it is more history and maths. Everybody thought we had a **** start to the season (and we did). We had 7 points from 7 games with basically the same first team. At that rate we would have 44 points. Even if we get points at half that rate we would have 38 and I think that will be enough to stay up.

If you want to bet, I will off you 10-1 odds against us getting relegated with a maximum bet of 50 quid on your part because I am not a bookie 🙂

      (Quote)

  58. Sharpy 😆 I 100% agree with your last line @ 290 👿

The saddest thing for me is that most people now think that we will stay up, not because we are a decent team, play decent football, have guts and determination but because there is 3 teams worse than us.

  63. Also Icedog: I am not happy with our present situation. I have been bitching about Pardew and Pardew-lite for months and am amazed that we weakened the squad in January. I just don’t think we are bad enough to go down from our present position. Cisse can sometimes win a game on his own and Sissoko and Perez are very talented. That balances out the untalented Mr. Williamson to some extent.
