Game On! Newcastle United v Manchester Utd

NewcastleUnited
Welcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the highs and lows of our Premier league meeting with Manchester Utd this evening, St. James’ Park 7.45.
Theres not much to add to the preview except that it now looks like Haidara is now out of the game so should be replaced by Ryan Taylor’
John Carver has been speaking again in the lead up to tonights game. JC believes his squad is adequately prepared to face the Red Devils and sees no reason why his team can’t come out on top.
“I think everyone was feeling the pressure against Villa,”.
“I think there was a great reaction from the players though. We need to build on that and react again now as we face Manchester United.
“The fixtures coming up are a bit daunting, but they’re also exciting. I love a challenge and the players are up for it as well.
“We’ve discussed it and we’ve set a target for those games. We seem to really get up for it when we welcome the big teams to St. James’ Park.
“We’ve looked at Man United’s record away from home and it isn’t that great, so there’s no reason why we can’t get at their defence.
“They have some super players going forward but they are also vulnerable in certain areas and hopefully we can exploit that.”
Daryl Janmaat and Tim Krul will be no strangers to Van Gaal’s style of play after playing in his squad during the 2014 World Cup, where Holland reached the semi-finals.
“One or two of the Dutch lads have been giving me a bit of advice,” said Carver. “It was quite an interesting insight but I’ll keep that private for now.
“I think it’s difficult for Manchester United fans. They’ve seen how entertaining they can be always on the front foot and playing exciting football.
“Now Van Gaal has come in with a different style and lots of different systems. His principles are still the same they like a lot of possession but he’s a little but more patient.”
“you just have to think of when we went to Old Trafford and won 3-0. The stats then said we hadn’t won for what, about 40 years?
“I’m always looking at the positives. Why shouldn’t we get a good result again?”
So the time for talking is over and lets see the Lads putting up a fight and show a bit of pride and determination.

  1. Ha! They’ll be released at about 2330 one evening. Will only be more of the same; money available, want value, Carver has the job until end of season and we will have a look for a new manager then and see who’s availabke at good value. Made an absolute packet but looking at keeping it all in the bank so we can have our open top bus parade as best accounts in North East football.

  2. MM I thought Stu was negative but your getting worse, try to see the positive and stop letting the bad cloud your views.
Stu I dont know what the hold up is on the accounts even Ryder was expecting them this week.

  3. I’m impatient to move the club forward by getting rid of the current despicable owner. The only way to do that is an empty ground for home games. He will tune in very quickly then. Otherwise, forget about it mates. That leech will stay until the last drop of our club’s blood is gone.

  4. Icedog mate are you saying Carr’s son is a players’ agent? Or in football management? At which club mate?

  5. But what is the positive Big Dave mate? I’m not pulling your leg here. To me it looks like things are getting steadily worse at the club. We have no real ambition whatsoever. Ashley will be happy with 4 wins out of Carver this season and probably appoint him permanent head coach if he achieves that. What other owner would be happy with the current state of us? Based on the first half of the season we should have finished with 50 points or more. Now we’ll be lucky to get to 40. And look at our goal difference.

  11. What has our club become when our passionate fan base are all eagerly sat around waiting on a set of accounts to come out 🙁 He really has knackered the fan base and needs to just do one.

  12. This spitting carry brings back memory when I played a couple of games in Italy when my youth team did a couple of exchange games with some Italian clubs, there full back spat in your face all the time to get you to kick off,to get you sent off,oh how the game has changed, never bothered me like,a good knee in the bollocks by mistake on corners worked for me

      (Quote)

  13. Munich – Wasn’t a link it was someone I was talking to recently told me. That’s literally the only positive thing happneing at the club.

As for the playing side of things I’m a little tired of people thinking we are growing slowly as we are consistantly regressing the quality of the squad.

      (Quote)

  14. Ice – the ironic thing is today you would get a red card and 3 match ban for that knee in the bollix
but spit back and you face double that.
    mental.
Cisse should just have lamped him and walked off.
hope he learns for next time

  15. Icedog@395, you have to keep in with Big Dave he’s the bloke with the ban hammer 🙂

Stuart79…ok mate…no probs regarding the new centre of excellence. I wish I was working for Wendy the Press Officer at the toon, she’s got the easiest job going. Absolutely NOWT comes out of the club…… maybe she’s on a YTS Scheme ? 🙄

      (Quote)

  16. Stuart – its not a positive, as it wont happen by then anyway.
    December 2016 maybe.

  17. STUART,jabba is very lucky guy the club imo are just happy to hang on in there in the PL,he’s lucky in so much there have been some very poor PL teams these last few seasons, things much change

  18. BB thing is there was no cameras in those games, there a lots of ways to play on the rough side mate even in games today if you know what to look
for that cameras don’t see, some are very good at it,as I’ve said officials now full time and at a very poor standard got to be a shake up with them

      (Quote)

  19. BB @ 401 I know I forgot to mention that 😆

Ice @ 402 was that before there was planes, when you had to travel by boat 😉

  21. Stuart: I am coming back to Newcastle for 5 weeks and will be there for the Swansea and Leicester games. Can I have your ticket? I will pay what it is worth.

  22. So, I am coming back to Seaton Burn and plan to take me 73 year old Mam and 82 year old Aunt on a trip. I figured I would reaquaint them with their heritage since neither drive.

Sea Houses – Holy Island – Berwick.

    Durham

    Alnwick – Rothbury

    Hexham – Keswick

    Yorkshire – Malham cove

Stay in a couple of pubs if I can avoid Mancs in the Lake District.

Any other ideas, I have 5 weeks to fill in 🙂

“GTE – Amazed, no actually staggered that you think we can afford to lose 13 players, bring in only 3…….”

As far as the 25 man squad is concerned, 13 players out and only 3 players in sounds about right. The last time I checked, we had a total of 33 players who were aged 21 and over on 1st January this year. In other words, they won’t qualify as under 21 for the purposes of the 25 man squad rule next season, so if they’re not named in the squad then they’ll need to be sold/released or sent out on loan instead

That figure of 33 is made up as follows:

23 currently named in the PL squad:
    1 Abeid, 2 Ameobi, 3 Anita, 4 Cabella, 5 Cisse, 6 Colback, 7 Coloccini, 8 S De Jong, 9 Dummett, 10 Elliot, 11 Ferreyra, 12 Gouffran, 13 Gutierrez, 14 Haidara, 15 Janmaat, 16 Krul, 17 Obertan, 18 Riviere, 19 Sissoko, 20 R Taylor, 21 S Taylor, 22 Tiote, 23 Williamson

+ 5 over-age players not named in the squad for the 2nd half of the season but sent out on loan instead:
Marveaux, Santon, Darlow, Vuckic & Ferguson

+ 5 players who have turned 21 during the last calendar year and so they’ve qualified as U21 this season, but won’t qualify as such next season:
Alnwick, Lascelles, Good, Bigirimana & Perez

So the point is that if we bring in, say, 3 top players (who presumably would be aged over 21), then we’d end up with AT LEAST eleven players that we wouldn’t be able to fit into the 25 man squad. If you then add a number of U21 players who might also be moved on (eg. Streete & Campbell) then it’s quite likely that we’ll see 13 or more departures in the summer, with only 3 or 4 senior players coming in.

  25. So basically Chris only NUFC struggle to manage their squad correctly? Shambolic.

Fans forum minutes out today and some interesting things in them so I hear.

      (Quote)

  26. Stu where did you hear about them as I have been looking about everyday but not a mention of the accounts.

Kim it’s not too often Jamie talks sense when it comes to us

  27. Dave, agree but think he’s spot on there. Apparently Evans was cited for another spitting incident against Rivi in the game, but has been cleared of that.

  28. Been told by someone they’re due out today. Don’t know if true but it’s been a while as the forum was in Monday. Can you see the irony on releasing record profits on a day the FA cup is on?

      (Quote)

  29. Kimtoon@428, “The Sound of Mucus”…..flippin heck 🙄 😆 😆

Big D@431, those things do happen when the FA think the club are taking the pee trying to win time by appealing and such. Flipping heck the evidence is there for everyone to see that Evans hockled at Cisse when he was on the ground… 😯

      (Quote)

  30. Eric Sykes@421 & 422 are you showing them around, or are they showing you around mate ? 😉 😉 😆

Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh is always a must visit for me when I come home.

Try visiting Alnwick Gardens too mate, with the Tree House and stuff….

Bimby’s Fish and Chip shop on Stamfordham Road is also a must for me..but that’s a different story 🙄 🙄

      (Quote)

  31. it’s just a teensy weensy point, but I’m not that keen on Cisse’s name being mentioned in front of Evans when it comes to the reporting of this ban.
At the end of the day, I’m pretty sure that Cisse wouldn’t have seen the red mist and hockled at Evans if it wasn’t in retaliation to the original misdemeanour ? Still it’s peanuts at the end of the day, it was a horrendous action by both of the numpty’s…
wonder if the club will make a statement as such ?…

      (Quote)

  32. Stuart, Chris G. – Yes,exactly. Look at the list of the those likely to be released /sold – and it doesn’t even inlcudee WIllo – and tell me, if you can that you woiuld want tokeep more than 2-3 of them. Get 2-3 proper first teamers in and we would undoubtedly be better off. Most of the 13/14 to go aren’t even meaningful squad players.

Part of the problem with squad management by spreadheet is that nobody is overseeing the balance of the squad and keeping it hungry, fresh and capable.

The most I look at this, it actually gives me hope – most of not all of these players will go, releasing a big chunk of wage bill. Is it possible thatb we are about to get a few new players in?

      (Quote)

  33. Dave, Good point, I thought if you appealed you got an extra game put on 😕

    So that’s an end to
Gobgate, Gob on the tyne and Spit-spat then , Oh and my personal favourite the Phlegmier league 😉

      (Quote)

  34. MM@435 club did make statement via Lee C,having talked to Cissie he is very sorry and knows hes done wrong and will vist schools ect during his ban to explain how wrong it is to do this blah blah

      (Quote)

  35. GTE – What happens when injuries kick in? When we don’t have any players to play as from what I see with your strategy we would be worse off by 10 squad players.

  36. At last a MP has asked is Ashley a fit and proper person to run a football club? he is mistaken if he thinks he can refuse Parliament

      (Quote)

  37. MM: Thanks man. They don’t drive and although they have probably been to the places you mention it will have been a long time ago when my Dad was alive and could drive them around.

  38. Eric@445, no problem mate…hope you have a splendid trip back home…

Did anyone take you up on your request for a match ticket…? maybe Troy or Stuart79 could help you out ?

  39. Paul Scholes’ recent comments on the independent website regarding the spitting incident are stomach churning biased drivel. Until reading this I had always held the independent in high esteem. Surprised they actually let this article go to print. The views expressed are anything but “independent”.

      (Quote)

  40. MM: I asked Stuart about a ticket as you saw but he didn’t respond yet. I said I would pay what it is worth 🙂 Actually, I would pay face value since he is so pissed off at the Toon and I fancy going to a game whatever the result. I have never been to The Strawberry on match day and might do that, whatever people say about how **** it is.

  41. “The board would look for an individual who would fit into the club’s structure, someone who is tactically astute, and who has a track record of developing young players and the ability to improve players. The club has no concerns over whether a potential new head coach is British or from overseas and deems other criteria far more important.”

With that criteria Caver shouldnt be under consideration at all; I understand Garde, Tuchel, Galtier & De Boer but McClaren hardly fits in with that either. Man Utd and Boro had productive academys way before he rocked up, His tactics have been criticised everywhere bar Derby (They were chuntering after the play off final mind) and his track record has been up and down at club level and was absolutely woeful with England.

      (Quote)

  42. The FA really stuck to the lads for spitting; It would have been a lesser ban if Evans had aimed racial abuse at Cisse and he’d responded by nutting him

    Strange organisation
