Grow your own!

With no Premier League fixtures this weekend and only internationals, it seemed an opportune moment to write about the FA’s latest brain wave.
So it would seem the FA have come up with a scheme to deliver us a better, improved England football team somewhere in the future.
Greg **** has this week outlined proposals to improve the lot of the young up and coming English players. He wants the rules changed so that we have more home grown players in Premier League Squads.
Currently Premier League Sides are allowed 17 non home grown players and the new rules would reduce this to 13 and at least two would have to have been trained by the club.
All Premier League clubs will have up to 4 years to implement these changes which if they go ahead will start from 2016. Newcastle amongst others, namely Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and Man City all currently fall foul of the new rules, but as outlined we would have 4 years to address this.
Greg **** was due to meet with Premier League chairman this week to discuss this new proposal and I’m pretty sure he’ll face some resistance.
There has been quite a few articles in the press over the last couple of weeks talking about the demise (for want of a better word) of the Premier League. Various journalist have pointed out that the lack of big name foreign stars coming to the Premier League has impacted on it’s pulling power and ability to compete in the champions league. They argue that with more and more top stars now favoring a move to La Liga, the Bundesliga or French Ligue 1 or even Serie A in Italy; it means the entertainment of the Premier League has greatly decreased.
In so far as the Premier leagues appeal goes, then it would seem more Johnny foreigners are the order of the day, not less, so where does that leave England? Of course the FA and the Premier League will always be at loggerheads over one thing or another due to the fact that each body has very different aims. But when it comes to what’s best for England, it would be nice if they could work together.
I’m not so sure the lack of home grown is the reason for Englands poor performances at Euro and world cups, maybe the long hard season and lack of winter break has some impact. Also, we just don’t seem to produce the calibre of player other top teams do, and when we do produce one a whole world of pressure gets put on them. Indeed should they stub their toe, wreck a matertarsal or get a thigh strain the whole team collapses without them!
So if the press have it right about the imminent demise of the Premier league, what will the effect of the home grown quota have on the Premier League? Will fans be happy to see more local lads break in to the first team even if they aren’t as technically gifted as their foreign peers? Will it mean that say 10 years from now we have a more competitive England team? Over to you.

  1. These are figures for year ending June 2014 so it should include Cabaye.

Maybe the all the TV money (at least the positional bonus and appearance portions) hadn’t been paid out by then

  2. Our wage bill must have gone through the roof! 😕 Or maybe we have paid for the training complex? Either way £19m isn’t going to buy us the players we need. Will need more money by selling Sissoko, which in turn will weaken us. So a vicious pointless circle.

  3. We have increased revenues by £34M but profits only rose by £9M. Not sure what costs could have increased by £25M

      (Quote)

  4. I am looking at it but may take a day or so. The turnover increase is all accounted for. Player fees are obviously not revealed but there is very little profit or loss from the purchases or sales. Maybe £1m. Also squad fees are not revealed but I only have access to the summery published by the club / media. Need to get my hands on the raw data.

  5. I thought we made more profit than that. Talk about pulling the wool over the fans eyes. He must be taking money out of the club.

      (Quote)

  6. Stem – We will have paid tax on the gross profit which could have been about £25m or so.

Anyway, it looks like the press are pushing the Steve Mclaren for coach the last few days… Will cots a couple of million though.

  7. Them figures cannot be right 😯 What about tv money and the Cabaye cash. Prem will you do a thread on it mate?

      (Quote)

  8. Kim and Stuart 25 million on tax is pretty steep. I wonder if the state of the art training facilities have anything to do with such a small profit. 18 million is nothing compared to the upgrades we need in the squad. Another doomed season on the cards.

      (Quote)

  9. A striker these days cost around 9 million at least. A good defender between 5-10 and a manager is about 1-2 million and Ashley wont do that unless his whole change in attitude. Our next manager will be free I take it. Our players will mostly be second rate frenchies as usual that no-ones ever heard of. I expect another season like this one. Nothing to get excited about. I hope he sells in 2016 or I might give up.

  10. Dave, that’s a hell of a lot lower than I thought it would be. Looks like we are gonna have to sell a few players if we are to improve 👿

      (Quote)

  11. Dave, I’m really confused by it mate. If we got that massive tv payout and sold Cabaye for £19M, even allowing for wages and other operating cost, and baring in mind we off loaded Mbiwa, Santon and Benny why is that all we are showing, Don’t get me wrong I know there is stuff like corporation tax and what ever, but it still seems awfully low to me.

      (Quote)

  12. Kim I think Benny, Mbiwa and Santon will be in the next set of accounts. But I thought Cabaye and Debuchy would have been in that set of accounts.

      (Quote)

  13. Dave ,I realised after I typed about them 3 but you have to be right on Cabs and Debbie surely. 😕

      (Quote)

  14. Kim @101 but the club have said at the fans forum that the sd advertising basically counter balances the interest free loan. But the club keep insisting that the loan is interest free every chance they get, even though in the last 3 seasons we have lost out on roughly £50 mil 😯

      (Quote)

  15. Dave, it’s a **** take. I would rather we pay off that lone but he likes it being owed so he can continue getting his free advertising.

      (Quote)

  16. Dave – you are right there mind. If the advertising offsets the interest then fair enough, but the club do keep insisting its interest free. They can’t have it both ways.

      (Quote)

  17. Dave ,how much was the original Debt? £100M, So what’s the yearly interest on that, anyone know?

      (Quote)

  18. I don’t see how there could only be 18.7M pounds in profit if we brought in 129.7 M in revenue. Costs have not gone up dramatically. Is there some fancy finger work being done in the accounts? And nothing paid off the loan again? I don’t believe anything said about the loan anymore. Ashley would have started paying it off if he wanted the money. This is more about the free advertising for him.

      (Quote)

  19. We had a profit when the revenue was 95M pounds. So how can there only be 18.7M pounds profit on 129.7M pounds? It doesn’t add up for me. Our costs haven’t risen much at all as we continue to sell off many of the top wage earners. So what costs have gone up dramatically?

      (Quote)

  20. Sharpy spot on mate so they should come out and admit that it’s not an interest free loan, instead of continually saying its interest free, that is the problem I have with it.
Kim @ 105 I think altogether it was £100-110 mil, as for the interest im not to sure but I would very much doubt it would be anywhere near £20 mil.
But As Aussie says I have been going on for yrs about the SD advertisments and that the club was losing out on revenue, but I have to admit I was going on that we were losing out on £10-15 mil and that was going of an advertising/ branding guru from 5yrs or so ago, but as Aussie says that was chicken feed, but for me that is atleast a top quality player every season to build the squad.

      (Quote)

  21. It doesn’t add up. Creative accounting must come into play here. And Ashley has his hooks in us as deep as ever with the interest free but never paid back loan. Start paying yourself back Ashley and get out.

      (Quote)

  22. Doesn’t the 18.7M pound profit mean that for the club now the break even point is 111M pounds? How is that possible when we were making profits on revenue of 96M pounds in 2013? It just doesn’t add up.

      (Quote)

  23. This doesn’t add up and there is 30 mil missing profit. There is no way that costs could have risen by that amount. Maybe it is something benign like front loading payments for the training ground or maybe more sinister like Ashley paying himself a special dividend? We just don’t know and it is typical of NUFC to release this stuff in a half-arsed way creating as many questions as answers. Just release the full accounts FFS.

      (Quote)

  24. I still expect to see 50 mil generated wherever that 30 mil went. Remember that was last year and this years accounts close June 30th. Therefore, we have last years banked profits plus probably another 50 mil for this year that could be used for recruitment. Ashley has cleared the decks of players and salary and there is a lot of money available. Hopefully he has a cunning plan for Manager and Players.

      (Quote)

  25. The owner is not improving the club. It’s as simple as that. Ashley has to go. Boycott until Ashley sells up.

  26. From another blog via Average_Contents:
Newcastle United have announced record post-tax profits of £18.7m for the last financial year, but have failed to explain why there has also apparently been a rise of £25m in operating costs.
Newcastle’s turnover leapt from £95.9m in 2013 to £129.7m in 2014, an increase of £33.8m on the previous set of accounts. The reported increase in profits, though, was just £8.8m, rising from £9.9m in 2013.
According to the figures released, Newcastle’s unexplained costs are around £25m – a figure calculated when the £8.8m rise in profits is subtracted from the £33.8m increase in turnover.

A statement released by Newcastle United on Monday morning stated that owner Mike Ashley had not taken any money out of the business in that time and the club’s debt to him remains at £129m in the form of interest free loans.
Newcastle failed to respond to an attempt by The Daily Telegraph to clarify the figures, in particular why such a large increase in turnover was not fully reflected in the size of the reported post-tax profits. The full accounts will be made public later this week. Significantly, Newcastle did not sign a player on a permanent contract in this period.

  27. It’s going to take the club an extra week to make something up. Bloody bollocks is what it is.

      (Quote)

  28. No! Wait! Fonging is too good for him. Strip the owner down and drop him in a sack of starving dingoes!!!

      (Quote)

  29. Why can we never get a complete and honest statement of club finances? There is only one reason. Because Ashley is a lying coward who hides and never tells the whole truth. A lot like most governments. Liars and cowards the lot of them. Look at Netanyahu. Lies to get re-elected then turns around and reverses his position and laughs at the fools who voted for him.

      (Quote)

  30. Nothing but misleading statements and absolute bollocks come out of the club since Mike took over. Ask Kevin Keegan and a number of others. The man has to mislead to cover his tracks. What other mental midget would have hired Joe Kinnear twice?

      (Quote)

  31. No response from the club for a request to clarify the increase in operating costs. What a surprise.Lies and the lying liars who tell them.

      (Quote)

  32. Guess we will just have to wait for the full results to be published. Should be interesting to see the £25m increase in turnover.

      (Quote)

  33. Troysta: why do they have to do it this way? They release a statement based upon incomplete accounts and create suspicion for no apparent reason because of the obvious gap between revenue and profits. Why not just wait, or if they want to give a summary/preview just give a brief explanation of the difference? They must have known there would be questions so why fuel suspicion unless they enjoy dicking people around?

      (Quote)

  34. We’re waiting Mike. The explanation had better be good. More creative accounting required Mike? This is football you A** not tat shop bollocks.

      (Quote)

  35. There is no increase in costs of 25M pounds. We’re going to hear some bollocks about within club expenditures that can’t be revealed no doubt. And our wage bill has dropped to about 45% of costs now. That is a huge drop under Mike. We can see why when we watch the team on the pitch. They are often woeful but cheap players will produce that kind of product quite often won’t they Mike?

      (Quote)

  36. My God how do people stand going to the ground with that pathetic freak? With his little dwarf Charnley sitting beside him.

      (Quote)

  37. Sorry mates but there is a truth shortage in the club right now. Mike and Lee are investigating what happened to the truth. They will get back to us about it soon I’m sure.

      (Quote)

  38. I just knew we were going to get this total and utter load of bollix.
But the massive massaging of the accounts has been even bigger than anyone could have guessed.
    YCMIU
    oh yes you could
    Only at the Toon.
    Joke club

      (Quote)

  39. Do the operating costs include loans to other football clubs to keep them afloat?
No doubt NUFC has had to pay a hefty dividend to ***** Detect aswell.
Maybe Masher needed a new chopper too.
Poor fella only has little one allegedly 😛

      (Quote)

  40. I know everyone is very impatient to learn the truth about the accounts. But the truth is very difficult to find at our club. Mike is searching everywhere he can think of. It’s very exhausting. He may have to take a long holiday to recover. Don’t call him, he’ll call us when he’s ready I’m sure.

      (Quote)

  41. The only thing I could think of was the training ground. We did announce it during this accounting period but I’m not sure it cost £25m. In fact it only cost circa £12m I believe. Salaries can’t have increased during this period as we didn’t sign anyone!

      (Quote)

  42. it would cost less to sort out all of the queens castles.
this new training ground must have gold taps and evian coming out of them 😆

      (Quote)

  43. It could be a combination of capital improvement projects, taxes, etc., and probably a few accounting tricks to lesse the tax bill. Still I don’t see all of that adding up to 25M. Sounds like the full accounts will be released later in the week.

      (Quote)

  44. I’m waiting for a summer of we tried but couldn’t get them over the line. We will bid low just to get rejected or offer a **** wage so we will get rejected.

      (Quote)

  45. There was no coincidence us being one of the last clubs to announce our profits in my opinion. I believe profits have been higher than £18.7m but they’ve waited to see what everyone else posted first and announced profits in keeping with the rest rather than tens of millions more.

      (Quote)

  46. Well, well, I see the moral beacon of the blog is up to his old tricks… snide remarks and twisting words.. You would really expect something better from someone who is so vehemently against such behavior on here. 😕
“But As Aussie says I have been going on for yrs about the SD advertisments and that the club was losing out on revenue, but I have to admit I was going on that we were losing out on £10-15 mil and that was going of an advertising/ branding guru from 5yrs or so ago, but as Aussie says that was chicken feed, but for me that is atleast a top quality player every season to build the squad.”

Well done, you have proved my point from the other day! Typical of you, you can’t let it go when some one gets the better of you…However I did have a laugh at the ‘Guru” part though!! 😆 😆 😳 😳 😳

      (Quote)

  47. So if Rangers are promoted they will have to pay NUFC £500,000 for the five players they loaned from us. Jesus! Only two of them are fit.

      (Quote)

  48. Is Aussie thinking of making any comment based on the thread or do we have to put up with his snide, pointless comments?

Think it was better when you took your bat and ball home in a sulk.

  49. Aussie I wasn’t being snide I was just stating a fact, but you now say I wont let it go ? Why should I ? Do you not stand by what you said.

      (Quote)

  50. Kim – yeah I was more thinking Ashley will look at the fact Saints sold half of their first team squad, made £33m and still finished top 8.
Guess what the plan will be for 2015/16.

  51. Munich – I was watching the U21s last night and a lad called Hofmann notched a couple for Germany. He looked a big strong lad, but I’ve never seen him before last night – have you seen much of him mate?.

Gnabry looked a real good player when he came on too – I wonder if Arsenal would let him go?. I’d even take him on a season long loan personally, coz he’d be perfect for what we are lacking on our right side at the moment.
