Game On! Newcastle United Vs Tottenham

Newcastle-United-vs-Tottenham-HotspurWelcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the highs and lows as we play host to Spurs in this evenings Premier league game (4pm kick-off), Newcastle United will be looking to end their five-game losing run.
A win for the Magpies would see them register their first double of the season in what will be their 400th Premier League home fixture.
United go into the fixture on the back of a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, while Spurs also lost last time out – going down 1-0 at home to strugglers Aston Villa. But most of the talk this week has been focused on the #BoycottSpurs campaign which I really hope is a success but fear it will be a bit of a damp squib. I could go on and quote Carver etc trying to get fans to stop the boycott, and as he says support the team but I am sure everyone has read all the stuff about it.But apart from that he has been talking ahead of the game saying, “I’m not bothered about performance – we need results. By hook or by crook we have to get some results. This weekend is important for the team and the Club and getting the right result, and I’m giving every single ounce to try and get that. We know that Tottenham haven’t been on the best run lately and they haven’t been scoring too many goals. Harry Kane, however, has been outstanding this season and I think he fully deserved to get into the England team. It’s great to see such a good, young English talent doing well.”
TEAM NEWS
Newcastle our so called Captain Fabricio Coloccini returns to the squad having completed a three-game suspension, and according to the Club could be joined by Siem de Jong, who came through 45 minutes for the under-21s on Wednesday night. De Jong had been ruled out since February by a collapsed lung ( but I suspect the club have said that to try to give the fans a reason not to boycott ). Winger Rolando Aarons is fit but unlikely to be risked against Spurs. Moussa Sissoko starts a two-match ban following his red card at Liverpool, while Papiss Cisse serves the fifth game of his seven-match suspension. Massadio Haidara (knee), Paul Dummett (knee), Cheick Tiote (knee) and Steven Taylor (Achilles) all remain sidelined.
Tottenham Full-back Kyle Walker is expected to miss out with an ankle injury, but Spurs could be boosted by the return of influential goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and defender Jan Vertonghen after a knee injury and illness respectively.

  1. CC – looking at the run ins, we do have a decent chance of staying up.
Looks to me that Hull have it worst.

However the dross I saw yesterday means we actually don’t deserve to. We look the worst team in the PL.

      (Quote)

  2. I just cant believe with those run ins 4 or 5 teams would get on a good enough run to jump us (if we get stuck on 35 that is)

Maybe Villa if they dont have half an eye on the cup final & Leicester who have a decent set of fixtures & some momentum but the rest wont get near us IMO.

It shouldnt be in question as most of us would have looked at Home matches against Swansea, West Brom & West ham and away matches at Leicester & QPR and predicted maybe 9-12 points ?

If we cant muster 5 fucking hell… 😯

      (Quote)

  3. CC – 5 is optimistic IMO, I was thinking 2-3 points from those games. We don’t have a player to score goals.

      (Quote)

  4. Sharpy: Cisse is available for the last 3 and Sissoko the last 4. Bet you never thought I would say a good word about Carver 🙂 Well, I didn’t, just pointed out there MAY have been SOME mitigating circumstances.

      (Quote)

  5. The problem is that this time next week we might only be 4 points clear as Leicester, QPR and Hull all have winnable games and we’re playing Swansea who are a decent side and were ****!

  6. I decided to make the most of the sun over the weekend and couldn’t be bothered to sit in and watch the match, but I gather I didn’t miss much, I didn’t bother to watch MOTD either so can’t really comment. Pleasantly surprised we managed to score at least, even if it was scrappy.

How big are the Leicester and QPR games now? Embarassing really.

  7. Eric – no doubt those 2 will make a difference, particularly Cisse. Hopefully he comes back wanting to make amends for his stupidity – likewise Sissoko actually.
As for Carver, I’m no great fan and certainly don’t think he’s the man for the job – but it sounds like your coming round to my view point 😉

Stu – I’ve done a few points predictions with the bottom 5 teams. 17th spot finishes on 34pts in my calculations – it’s going to be worryingly close if we don’t pick up any points.

The thing that struck me the other day is that the compo money we got for letting Pardew go to Palace will be offset by the loss in money thanks to the drop of league positions since Pardew left. Infact Ashley may actually be slightly out of pocket – which would be incentive enough for them to want to replace JC.

      (Quote)

  8. Newkie – I think QPR could well be relegated by the time we play them, or a defeat to us would send them down.

  9. A change of leader in the fantasy league! Just two games to go and it’s neck and neck.

And the battle for the top 8 is at a very interesting stage. The top 4 have all qualified for the cup and Inter Yasista are probably there, but it’s tight for those 6-13, though still a long shot for the lower two. Next game will be crucial for some.

  10. I think people at the beginning just wanted to give Carver a chance to prove his worth but he clearly isn’t good enough.

      (Quote)

  11. Steve Howey seems to think Carver will get the job. Wonder if he’s heard something or if he’s just using the form guide on Jabba.

      (Quote)

  12. Sharpy – they may well be, but I wouldn’t read too much into it even if they were.

They were already relegated when we played them 2 years ago and we were fighting for survival and we only just scraped a 2-1 win then. And we were better and they were worse back then…

Bris – I had another loss only because I made two transfers in the week. I’d like some sort of recount…why is there no undo button on the **** thing!? 😛

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy: just in case you think I am going soft on Carvs. Here’s a quote from the weekend losers section of Football365:

    “John Carver
“I have to find a method of trying to play that might not be pretty on the eye but I need to find a way of getting some results, getting some points. People might not like that but I’m going to have to do it” – John Carver, April 19.

You’re right John. All this beautiful tippy-tappy stuff Newcastle have been playing recently just isn’t working. The most under-qualified Premier League manager has been quickly found out. Who knew?”

      (Quote)

  14. Terry – that was exactly it for me mate. When you look at Monk at Swansea, who was given a chance with no prior experience, it can happen. Then it was a case being annoyed for him with regards to who long it took the board to actually appoint him. He had a genuine affiliation with the club and understands what fans want. The problem has been that he has had neither the players or the ability to make any kind of success of his opportunity.

Stu – I think Howey is offering an opinion mate. I don’t believe for a second that he is in the know about what the boards intentions are.

      (Quote)

  15. Listening to Carver in the press conference after the game it was very worrying. He looked completely and utterly shell shocked.

Ashley must be shitting himself also. Hope he is anyway…

      (Quote)

  16. Newkie – this week has been a mare for me!!, I left Liverpool and Arsenal players in forgetting they they were in cup games 👿
You can consider yourself the JC of fantasy footy!! – you will scrap through coz the numpty chasing you won’t get enough points 😛 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Eric/Stu – Carver has completely lost his way IMO. His team selections and subs suggest that to me. He keeps making changes each game hoping to stumble on something that works. I acknowledge I’m an armchair manager, but I can’t believe Gouffran is doing things on a training ground that warrants selection. JC said he selected him to stop their fullbacks – so he’s focusing on the opponents rather than selecting players to properly support the likes of Perez or on our own attack. The bloke seems completely lost and his post match interview yesterday – the bloke looked ill.

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy17 I’m sure Carver wants to win but he hasn’t got the tool’s. Pardew even struggled towards the end of the season to get result’s. At the end of the day it’s the player’s that are at fault. They’re simply not good enough. We don’t have a strong first 11.

      (Quote)

  19. Sharpy 😆 I’d purposely avoided scousers forgetting they had a double game week this week as well, and I’ve already used my transfer! Some management. Still better than Carver.

Don’t speak too soon though fella, on either count..

You know it’s bad season when I’m more excited for fantasy football results than a Newcastle match though 😛

      (Quote)

  20. I don’t think Carver ever had a “way” and sadly he’s just not cut out for management. We had one or two games at the start where the players seemed in high spirits and we scored some goals, or got a few men forward, and people thought this was the evidence that Pardew had been holding us back. In reality it seems our whole coaching set up is very old school/negative/fitness based, which shouldn’t be surprising as it’s the cheaper option.

The team isn’t great, but it’s certainly better than 20-25 points a season which is what it seems like Carver would average out at..

      (Quote)

  21. I don’t heap all the blame on Carver. He’s still left to work with a box of blunt tools.

I can’t praise him either because he has no managerial record to compare against.

Too early to judge him as a manager. Some have made their minds up. Some had after a couple of games. But they are the Clueless Crew so I take no notice of them.

I do see the players working for Carver which is a positive.

      (Quote)

  22. “If not this year, then relegation in 2016 looks a good bet at the current rate of decline. It’s hard to think of a side who possess less physical presence and at times, Spurs were able to mark up at set pieces by merely standing in front of their opponents and blocking out their view.”
A little excerpt from NUFC.com. Read it and weep Ashley you clown.

      (Quote)

  23. The Louise Taylor piece is very weak on new ideas Kimtoon mate. Thanks for nothing Louise. Did we really need telling any of that? Ashley is a lousy owner but beware there may be even worse ones out there. Brilliant Louise. Why is it that other clubs can be run properly then? Does Newcastle have a sh*t magnet buried under the ground?

      (Quote)

  24. “However, the majority of the Magpies on display were short on confidence, ability and application and this squad of players is simply not good enough for this division.” More from NUFC.com. Spot on. Well built squad there, right Ashley?

      (Quote)

  25. I see the fans forum people have written an open letter to the club asking for answers. I wouldn’t hold their breath if I was them.

      (Quote)

  26. Troysta @250: As usual you misjudge the mood of NUFC fans. You say Carver cannot be judged because he had no previous managerial record. He did however have 4 years coaching under Pardew and has won 2 in 14 whilst playing dreadful football. I did post earlier that he lost the games he did against teams he might have expected to lose against, but not all of them FFS. He should have sqeeked a point here or there if he had anything about him. When you refer to the “clueless crew” in the case of Carver I assume you mean anybody but yourself!!! Look at the Chronicle polls. 2% want him as Manager and they are probably Mackems on a wind up.

Your post @250 defending Carver is probably your most delusional yet. You and Carver should be put in the same loony bin because he thinks he is doing a good job and you are desperately searching for excuses for his dismal performance.

      (Quote)

  27. I see Michael Owen is saying NUFC might not win another game this season. That would be 11 in a row and Sunderland hold the record of losing their last 15. I doubt it though, as we will literally have a different team out soon. Dummett is back in training and de Jong and Aarons are close to fitness. Plus, Sissoko and Cisse will be back. Even Carver cannot conspire to lose all 5 with 5 of our better players back. I can even see a couple of wins if things go in our favour, but I hope this will not change anybody’s mind that Carver should get the job full time, especially Ashleys.

      (Quote)

  28. Also from the Lads @ NUFC.COM
“Despite the desperate loss of form, it would still take an outlandish series of results to see at least four teams sitting below us get past and consign us to the drop.

That’s of no comfort though when looking ahead to the remaining five games of another desperate season.
Defeat by Swansea on Saturday would be the first time that the Magpies had lost seven league games in a row since 1977, when the inept Richard Dinnis oversaw ten successive losses between August and October. ”

      (Quote)

  29. It will tho Eric
Parver would have the excuse of injuries to justify his rank performance as a so called ‘coach’
I think even if we were to lose all 5 we would still just about survive.
I never want us to lose, but it might just be what it takes to galvanise the fans into taking action against the regime

      (Quote)

  30. I don’t think he’d sell up even if offered a mega bucks deal, he’s making too much profit from SD getting global free advertising and the tv dosh.

      (Quote)

  31. BB nobody is saying there haven’t been mitigating circumstances for Carver’s dismal performance, just that it was totally expected given his previous managerial experience and his recent record under Pardew. Carver was coaching the attack under Pardew and we are second lowest scorers in the PL this year. I don’t remember last year being that much better. This is anectdotal because I haven’t looked it up, but I bet we are in the bottom 3 for number of games where we score zero goals, if not bottom. And lastly, that we persisit with the free kick to Williamson on the edge of the opposition box says it all about Carver – even when he has been sussed he continues to do it – IDIOT.

      (Quote)

  32. So what will be the outcome if JC is made permanent head coach ?
Will he have enough to achieve top 10 ?
    I don’t think so somehow.
More of the same tripe the most likely outcome, finishing just above the bottom 3 again.
    Success for Mike 😕

      (Quote)

  33. Boots – if we fail to win another game I have us surviving by just 1 point.
I truly hope we finish 4th bottom and just scrap through. It might be the wake up call that Ashley needs – the only thing that will get through to him!.
It will be rough justice as well, coz it will mean the money he made in Pardews compo will have been lost with the number of league places we’ve dropped.

      (Quote)

  34. Eric, totally agree on the free kick to Willo gripe, how long does it take before they realise it don’t work and the entire league know the routine. Our lads are tiddlers too, Spurs lads were much bigger and were always gonna head the ball away from danger 🙄 bloody hell they didn’t ev en have to jump, it’s embarrassing.

      (Quote)

  35. BB, With or without new players if JC is permanent coach I suspect relegation awaits next season, though I would love to be proved wrong.

      (Quote)

  36. Kimtoon: Carver also says we might have to change tactics and play more direct. Who to? We haven’t got a traditional target man and a forward line of Perez, Cabella and Armstrong might even be played on Saturday. I think their combined height would be equal to Peter Crouch. I hope that he means play it behind the last defender for our forwards to run onto and not his heretofore approach of hoofball (usually from Willo and Krul I might add).

      (Quote)

  37. Eric you say we are the 2nd lowest scorers as if it’s all to do with JC ? But do you not think having only Cisse as a proven goal scorer is owt to do with it ❓

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy – Don’t bank on it being a wake up call. How many players did we bring in after we finished 17th? I think off memory only Remy.

      (Quote)

  39. JC: “I am honest, I never give up, I am a fighter, I tell it like it is, I’m hard me like, I don’t make excuses” – all things that have come out of John Carver’s mouth that there is no evidence of, ever. Even the MLS job at Toronto where he won over 30% he walked away from. What comes out of his mouth and what is shown on the pitch are totally contradictory. This on top of him being a stooge, lackey and apologist for Ashley, Carr and Charnley make him undefendable in my view. YOU READ THAT TROYSTA?

      (Quote)

  40. Big D: I understand the mitigating circumstances, and you can add the failure of Rivierre. Carver has to take responsibility though as he has been in charge of the attack. We scored very few last year with Cisse and Remy.

      (Quote)

  41. Eric if im not mistaken Cisse was going through a shocker year and I thought Remy done ok for us for the amount of games he played.
I am not saying that JC is the bee’s knee’s as I think the most important signing we need is a proven quality manager, but I dont think that will happen, but even the special one would need to have quality.players to make a difference with us.

      (Quote)

  42. Also Big D: I just don’t see anything in Carver that would suggest he would do well even with better players. Looks like he is now following his mentor (Pardew) and ostracizing players (Jonas) as well.

I don’t know. You probably think that I am picking on Carver as an easy target but I did expect this, although not quite as bad.

You could also hypothocize that no manager would do well with this squad. That’s not the point though as we are dealing with reality and there is always the argument of what if we had such and such. Carver was a bad choice and it has worked out even worse than expected.

      (Quote)

  43. Eric I meant to add I know JC has to take a lot of the blame, but at the start of the season when everyone was calling for Pards head I said a fair few times that I really didnt believe that we would get rid of him and if we did, they wouldnt replace him with a better manager, and we would just get another yes man/puppet.

      (Quote)

  44. Big D: Cisse did have a shocker where he lost touch and confidence. That’s where quality coaching might have helped 🙂

      (Quote)

  45. Eric @ 277 I agree that JC wont do well enough for us , but I didn’t think Pards would be the right man either but under the Regime you have to expect it

      (Quote)

  46. Big D: you are usually level headed about what will happen whereas I had a bit of a vendetta against Pards because of his personality. With Carver I just do not see the ability and it is proven in his record. At the moment you might even make the case that Carver dragged Pardew down (don’t tell Troysta I said that). Anyway, I really hope that with a few players back we get a few points to be absolutely safe from relegation. I am not in the Stuart camp of thinking relegation might be a benefit, especially since I get all PL games in the US and very few Championship games.

      (Quote)

  47. Eric the only hope that I have is that Jabba has a complete change in his plans for the club, and brings in a proper quality manager, other wise its just going to be more of the same **** different day.
But sadly I can’t see Jabba changing.

      (Quote)

  48. Quality coaches can’t do much with a broken knee cap though . Didn’t Cisse have the best goals per game ratio at some point this season?.

I know Riviere hasn’t worked out so far, but I think he has to play until Cisse is back. I know he can’t hit a barn door this season, but he provides physicality to the front line and is the closes thing we have to target man. I honestly think we’d be better off with him upfront than Raylor in midfield. Go 4-4-2 and sacrifice a midfielder for that 2nd forward I say so Perez has some proper support.

Stu – I won’t hold my breath mate, but I think that loss of money dropping down the league will probably hit Ashley more than the boycott.

      (Quote)

  49. Sharpy: Cisse broke his knee on April 19, 2014 so didn’t miss many games due to that last year. I am really beginning to believe more than ever that the last few years have been the Parver double act. I still think Pards will crash and burn at Palace because that has been his history.

      (Quote)

  50. Eric – Whether Pardew crashes and burns doesn’t really matter, but what is clear is that he was doing a better job than many people realised if you look at the situation currently which gives a great idea of the lack of quality he actually had to work with.

      (Quote)

  51. Stuart: it is deja vu all over again though innit. Same as last years run in when Pardew had arguably more to choose from but didn’t play them. Two peas in a pod – Pardew and Carver.

      (Quote)

  52. But I fear any coach would have the same problem. It is clear the players have downed tools for the season as they look forward to a move to a more ambitious club with higher wages. Who can blame them really…

The rigidity of the transfer policy is coming hime to roost in my view.

      (Quote)

  53. Many coaches would be hamstrung by the lack of depth outside our first 11 but I find it hard to believe a coach of any quality would not find a solution to scoring from a corner for a year and a half

This time last year Southamptons players were leaving not just wanting to and they went right until the last kick off the season. I don’t think Pardew/Carver command respect of international players and struggle to motivate them unless they have a Barton, Nolan or Cabaye to keep the players onside

      (Quote)

  54. CC – Palace under pardew have scored more goals from corners than any other team. Didn’t pardew say he repeatedly asked Carr for someone with a presence to help cause damage from corners yet they continuely ignored his requests.

      (Quote)

  55. Terry – that’ll be a documentary on modern day slave labour I reckon 🙄

Eric/CC/Stu – it’s all about players at your disposal as Stu says. Eric – that will be why little has changed (got worse) under JC, as he has the same players Pardew did – with alot of injuries & suspensions too.
Stu – not only do we not have a threat from corners, we don’t have anyone who can put a decent set piece into the box – it’s ridiculous. In fact, I’d bet we have conceded more goals as a result of being awarded a corner than we have scored – ie the opposition have cleared the corner and gone straight down the other end and scored.

      (Quote)

  56. The set piece thing highlights an area that’s needed “investment” for yonks and we still haven’t got anything, so I doubt it will ever change until we have a full on clear out. It appeared like Pardew took Hughtons good work and rubbished it, but in reality the loss of actual set piece specialist players (Barton, Carroll, Nolan – Taylor when he can be bothered to turn up) just shows we were entirely reliant on them.

Hughton’s Norwich scored goals from set pieces and Pardew’s palace do it for fun. One flipping coach with some new ideas will cost F all and we still can’t be bothered to resolve it.

      (Quote)

  57. JC hasn’t covered himself in glory as they say but it truly is impossible to evaluate him with what he’s had to work with. Throw De Jong, Aarons, Dummett, Hediera, and Cisse into the team and we’d have a better idea on his ability.

Most of our bench is simply terrible. And that’s on Charnley (more so than Ashley IMO)

      (Quote)

  58. MDS: Carver says he was happy with the squad and to judge on results. Now after appalling results he says he has done a good job. I know he couldn’t predict the injuries and suspensions and I know he had to tow the party line to have any chance at the job permanently. I just think it has all played out as an inevitability given our lack of investment, Doctors who must have gotten their medical training in Papua New Guinea or somewhere, ultra-thin squad and a squad where many players were already known to be injury prone and were the cheap option because of Ashley’s willingness to gamble.

      (Quote)

  59. Eric – part of me wonders (hopes) that this is all a result of Ashley, Charnley and Carr sitting down together when Pardew was leaving and deciding it was an opportunity for change. They could have decided to look at the players in our squad of players to see who was worth keeping and who needs moving on – hence 5 going to Rangers to get game time they wouldn’t at NUFC. They knew no new manager would come in and agree to oversee that review so putting Carver in was an easy decision – and having worked with Pardew for 4yrs, they probably hoped he’d be able to keep getting the points to finish around 10th. It could be that they intend a fresh start next season, but didn’t expect things to go quite as badly during this period.
    That’s my hope anyway 🙄

      (Quote)

  60. Oh dear, Sharpy… 🙄 You’re in for a fair few disappointments if you keep hoping Jabba has a grand plan.

      (Quote)

  61. Stu – it’s a very small part of me mate, based solely on the fact that Ashley & Charnley are regularly at SJP on match days and can’t enjoy what they see. I know they are money men, but Ashley enjoys football too – but he can’t be enjoying what he’s seeing week in week out. If he was just in it for the money, he doesn’t HAVE to be at the games. Also, he can’t WANT to be the owner of the worse footballing side in the PL.
I generally go with the duck theory, but there is a small part of me that will always hope a hope.

      (Quote)

  62. Not only can they not be enjoying what they see on the pitch, they can’t be enjoying being the laughing stock of the country.

I think in response to that they’ll spend more money this summer but I really don’t see them changing their overall plans

      (Quote)

  63. @Sharpy 😉 forever the optimist. 😛

I read somewhere today that SM being the next newcastle coach was the worst kept secret in football, I wouldnt say this is seeking change, more of the same it seems (if true)

Also, 5 players went to Ranger for half a mill & crucially, to help Rangers secure promotion

      (Quote)

  64. Stuart

Pardew said Keith Millen and Tony Pulis are behind no that with the work they put in on the training ground ages before he arrived.

They have a lot of height at palace but that would count for nothing if the taker can’t beat the 1st man. The delivery after Barton left was the main issue as Pardew should have realised, Not us failing to sign Douglas or Carroll. A good coach would have remedied that with hours of practice and if we lacked presence we could have tried something different Like West broms wonderfully worked goal the other day scored by 5 foot odd Morrison.

We just Persisted with the amateurish chip to the back post for Williamson thing practically every time…
