Vote for the players you would keep

Cheik Tiote
Tiote – Spent a lot of time on the sidelines
There has been a lot of speculation linking players to the club already this summer, but very little talk of players leaving. By my reckoning, we actually have a squad of 25 already, so clearly we still need to make room for incomings.

The only player in the 25 that is under 21 years of age is Rolando Aarons. However this season we are required to have 8 home grown players, which we will struggle to meet with outgoings and our liking for cheap foreign imports – therefore I am assuming the club will register Aarons in the first team squad to help meet the criteria. In any case, I cannot see the club buying a senior to pad out a 25 man quota and treat Aarons as a junior in the process. He is already a key player when fit.

This summer will see a few players return from loans, such as Haris Vuckic, Jamaal Lascelles, Karl Darlow and Sylvain Marveaux. We know couple of those will be kept, but would you keep Vuckic and Marveaux? The former had a very good season at Rangers and was arguably their best player when played just behind the front two.

Meanwhile, Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse are being linked with moves away to Turkey. Tiote is a good player on his day, but has had lengthly spells on the treatment table and when present, has been criticised for a loss of form. Is it time for him to go? We may be buying a top striker this summer (allegedly), but would it really make sense to flog last seasons top scorer just to help raise funds? Moussa Sissoko has been linked with moves to Champion’s League clubs and has made it clear that he would jump ship given the chance. After a season of up and down form and questions around his commitment, do we really want to keep a mercenary on the books – or is he just too good to let go? In defense Steven Taylor is perennially injured but still considered a better defender than Mike Willamson (except when his suicidal decision making comes to the fore). Should we let one or both of them go to make room for a top defender to come in?

Have players like Remy Cabella, Vurnon Anita and Sammy Ameobi really flattered to deceive, or has the poor quality of our coaching staff meant that the players’ quality has not been given the chance to shine through thanks to bad training drills and tactics? Would you give these players another go under a new coaching set up?

I have set up a pole below. We will go with a majority rule – so whichever players have less than 50% by the time the vote closes tomorrow will get the thumbs down from the Toon faithful and we will expect the player to be moved on by August and replaced by somebody more deserving to wear the shirt! Our budget is not going to be massive and we are unlikely to buy loads of players, so bear that in mind when you are wielding your virtual axe!

Turns out I forgot to put Marveaux into the squad, so we in fact have a squad of 26. Vote on his fate below;

  1. same as cabella hes ganna be we helded to ransom again for a player that aint worth what they want

  2. AMF: you have to admit there was a variant of that on free kicks – knock it to Willo on the corner of the 18 yard box where 3 of the opposition defenders will be waiting because they know what is coming.

  3. What is up with this club? They’re expected to confirm Cathro in next 48 hours! Everyone knows he’s got the job, he’s even doing interviews about it so what is the hold up?

      (Quote)

  4. AMF: irony doesn’t always come across on blogs. Quite often people think you are serious.

<<<<<<<<<<< this dude here said cabella was worth 7 million last summer, turned out about on the mark despite some of our looney surporters saying he was worth 15,so who was closer to the mark bud lol 😆 😆 😆

  6. Just jokes about Thauvin mate, he seems to be an over priced premadonna..

      (Quote)

  7. Problem with valuations is that because there’s so much money in the PL as soon as a Pl club shows an interest the price goes up. It’s pretty basic economics even for the most simple of minds.

      (Quote)

  8. Stuart: I think he is getting interviews in with The Sun and BBC before he starts as they are not our “preferred media partners” and he knows he will be muzzled once he becomes a member of staff.

      (Quote)

  9. Eric, yep you are right mate! To be fair to the others on here, TAE is a little slow to catch on! 😆

      (Quote)

  10. TAE: I have seen quotes that Cabella cost 7.1 mil, 11 mil and 12 mil. I don’t know which to believe and the club tell us nowt. I think there is potential there if he would lay off with all the stepovers.

      (Quote)

  11. Most simple minds believe what they read in the press..as long as it resembles the truth, they will believe it! 😉

we had peeps on the blogs last summer saying we should pay 15 million for that cabella 😆

      (Quote)

  13. ERIC SYKES
<<<<<<<<<<<< but would be very surprised if we payed much more than 7 for him 😀

      (Quote)

  14. TAE: who though? And I will be very surprised if Austin leaves London. The papers say he will take another 2 weeks to make up his mind (I know AMF), but can we afford to wait that long, especially as West Ham are supposedly offering a higher salary (I know it is paper talk AMF) 🙂 We are supposed to sit on our hands and do nothing in the meantime? That’s what got us into this mess.

  15. The fans forum is next Monday. Who do they invite? I wish they would invite The Troysta, that would be pure comedy gold Jerry, comedy gold.

i think austin will end up at southampton meself, which is fine with me as long as we get that Mitrovic over the line,he would be no1 target for me and that austins also carrying a lot of weight, looks like a sicknote waiting to happen

      (Quote)

  17. TAE: I have never seen Mitrovic play, have you? What sort of player is he, fast, tall? I have seen Dost and he looks like he would suit us, although you would hope he is not another Luuk de Jong, I doubt it.

      (Quote)

  18. If I’m honest I think if the choice was Thauvin or Jesse Lingard I think I’d rather go for Lingard – even if it was a loan deal with option to buy this season. Carr is clearly a fan of Thauvin, but I’m not sure if his heart would be in it with us. I would even consider Ince ahead of Thauvin – he may not be as technically gifted but he’s still a good player and would want to prove himself more I reckon.
Top choice would be Georginio Wijnaldum for me though.

      (Quote)

  19. Thanks TAE: looks good for him being only 20. My one worry is he only scored 1 in 13 for Serbia but he is still young. I see he can play in goal in an emergency. That might come in handy if Timmy the Hoof continues his form of last year.

      (Quote)

  20. SHARPY17
agree with Georginio Wijnaldum defo what we need a scoreing midfielder and would rather we spent the dosh on him than Thauvin

      (Quote)

  21. we aint had a midfielder that could chip in with 10 goals or more since nolan left

      (Quote)

  22. I hope to hell the rags are wrong saying we are after Downing he’s over 30 and has one good game ten and might hold back young Aarons, don’t want him

      (Quote)

  23. ICEDOG
wernt it him that could not find that huge lump carrol 😯 in the box with his crosses, could pick him out meself wearing me slippers

      (Quote)

  24. Once over Thauvin? Dear God what is happening?! Once has had two PL clubs (Ex Liverpool) and he’s played about 3 games and then loaned out to the Fizzy each time. Says enough for me.

      (Quote)

  25. Ice – I think that’s more rag BS mate. Didn’t Mc have Downing at Boro?, that’s probably where they’ve got that one from.

What do we do with Anita & Abied?

      (Quote)

  26. Actually I was that kind of decision making that lumbered us with Riveiree instead of Lazacette. Which one would be worth more now and would have contributed more last season?

      (Quote)

  27. If true, the strikers we are after look to be what we need – Austin, Mitrovic, Dost. We need a focal point for the attack and that is not Cisse who is all instinct. We could then play de Jong (when fit 🙂 ) or Perez/Cabella off the striker.

I hope our idiot management don’t sell Cisse though. He could be a game changer off the bench and good back up. His game may not look pretty but he does score and that is basically all you want.

      (Quote)

  28. Stu – I assure you mean Ince. I’m not saying he is my preferred option, I’m just saying I think he’d better suit the PL than Thauvin IMO. For the money they are looking to shell out on Thauvin, I think there are better options.

      (Quote)

  29. ERIC SYKES
cisse aint a lone striker really,he always scores more with some1 playing up front with himin other words hes playing in a system that dint suit his style if you know what i mean

      (Quote)

  30. Downing has done OK at West Ham. My worry though is that we would get the Liverpool version. I think he went a whole season with no goals and one assist. We already have Sammy to do that and I am sure he is cheaper.

      (Quote)

  31. TAE: I have never been able to figure out Cisse and have come to the conclusion that it is all instinct. That’s why he will go on runs of scoring for fun and then seem like he disappears. He is useful to have in a squad but I bet they sell him.

      (Quote)

  32. Stu – the reason we didn’t get Lacazette was more because he didn’t want to come to us or should I say he didn’t want to leave Lyon.

      (Quote)

  33. ERIC SYKES
if they sell him i would also want another striker as well as Mitrović brought in

      (Quote)

  34. Not only is Downing to old at 7mil its highway robbery. would agree with jabba on this one

      (Quote)

  35. Sharpy – It was because we wouldn’t meet their €15m asking price. That’s been well documented.

      (Quote)

  36. Stu – the lad made it perfectly clear that even if we did he wouldn’t leave Lyon anyway.

      (Quote)

  37. Don’t think so, Sharpy. You mean the president made it clear. It’s a well known fact (Don Hutchinson confirmed this) that clubs only bid for players they know want to come.

      (Quote)

  38. Hardly a rejection, Sharpy. He even said there was nothing in it! Basically saying he didn’t even get an offer!

      (Quote)

  39. Stu – maybe they didn’t offer coz they knew he wasn’t interested in leaving Lyon – that’s what Hutchinson said isn’t it?. Laca said he wanted to stay at Lyon and as NUFC only bid on players who so an interested, we didn’t bid in him.

      (Quote)

  40. The list of possible transfer targets this summer is absolutely underwhelming. Mitrovic, Dost even Austin look very ordinary to me and only a few % better than Cisse. Konopyanka looks a great player but probably wants London. Is Thauvin any better than Cabella?
Hope Schteve’s got something much better in mind I really do.

      (Quote)

  41. Well, just back from Glasto and still no players in.
Cathro is definitely good news though, very pleased about that. Simpson sounds likely. Any news on Steele?

      (Quote)

  42. Georgio – we just scrapped survival, who were you expecting? – Aguero, Messi, Pogba maybe?!. Those players are as good as it gets from where we find ourselves IMO

      (Quote)

  43. Well it was Vic Keeble birthday 85 and the only player left alive from the old FA cup winning teams left toon in the 60s I remember watching him with my dad as a kid,I thought he was the bees knees he was so good with his head fans used to say he could score a penalty with his head,I know he took no **** on the pitch

      (Quote)

  44. See the transfer rumours are as credible as ever; Out of contract Sammy Ameobis joining Cardiff on a season long loan apparantly…

      (Quote)

  45. Shearer, Beardsley, Waddle, Gascoigne, McDonald, Ferdinand, Ginola, Albert, Lee, Keegan – how about we have another f@cking hero and stop pissing about?

      (Quote)

  46. Is this cynical or what? Well, we have the The Championship coaching staff in place now, plus a jock who never played a game above youth level. Still, he was second in command to a good coach in Spain, but then quit for some unknown reason. Supposedly 4th choice on McClaren’s list – hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray.

I said I was going to be cynical 🙂

  47. Still a step up over the last lot, judging by the slagging off they got on here Eric.

  48. MDS: why do you say that? You were part of it. Another fucking hissy fit. Pathetic.

  50. After four years of **** set pieces, Record breakingly bad defending & God awful football I’m prepared to give the new guys a chance

Championship or not, I find it hard to believe we’ll go a year & a half without scoring from a corner like we did under the manager of the season (2012)

      (Quote)

  51. Prem: you know I didn’t like Pards and Carvs. I didn’t like their results, their tactics, their blather, their football. Northern League would be a step up for those two. Somehow, we managed to stay in the PL with them mis-managing but I would say that was more luck than design.

I will give Pards 2 years max before he gets Palace relegated and if Carver gets a job above league 2, I will be shocked. Actually, he might get the job but will be sacked within 6 months.

  52. mds,if you think this blog is a wreck, you should have a look on eds its a fkin nightmare total mess,on this blog at least you can talk footy.

  53. Problem is people come on here for some relief and to talk positively about the one thing we all love – NUFC. The problem is they give us very little to be positive about.

Maybe MDS should try going on a Chelsea blog if he wants positivity

      (Quote)

  54. I think our first signing this week will be a loan deal for Van Ginkel. If that’s the case, where the future there?

      (Quote)

  55. We need more writers to move the subject on a little and keep the place a bit fresher. Still, been no new confirmed news from the club since SM signed – so things are bound to go on a bit of a downer, especially after MA’s big talk before the WH game.

      (Quote)

  56. I don’t really get you MDS. There is bickering on here but there is bickering on every blog, have a quick look at Twitter or the Chronicle if you want to see negativity.

You might be upset with me I suppose because I fart around a bit. But in the discussion today I learnt that TAE has watched Mitrovic and thinks he is a decent player. The link he sent encouraged me to look into who Mitovic is and see if he MIGHT be useful for us. I found out he is still young but is a big ******* and might therefore be useful for us in the PL. All information that I probably wouldn’t have been bothered to look up on my own.

The blog is serving a purpose for me as I watch every game we play and want us to get better and not sign another Albert Luque if we can help it (not that i have a say in it but at least I would be forewarned that he was shyte).

Now, if you have any specifics as to what is bothering you then spit it out. Troysta hasn’t been on in while so it can’t be me and him arguing that upset you.

  57. Here, I will do a blog point/counter-point on Cathro. This is the nature of blogs:

A: he is a young, progressive coach
B: he never played professional football at a high level so what does he know?

A; He worked under a talented coach in Spain and Portugal
B: why did he quit then?

    A: He is Scottish.
    B: So is Alex Ferguson

    A: And Alex Mcleish!!!
    B. Are we stuck on Alex’s now?

A: He was our 4th choice.
B: Who is to say Phil Neveiller would have been any better?
