United hit the £50 million mark with Thauvin capture

Florian Thauvin
Florian Thauvin
Newcastle United have taken their summer spending beyond the £50 million mark with the £13 million capture of Florian Thauvin from Marseille.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract at St James’ Park in a deal which will see Remy Cabella depart Tyneside for Marseille on an initial season-long loan deal which could be made permanent next summer subject to certain conditions being met.

I’m intrigued with this one. The sounds from France seem to suggest that Marseille have got the better end of the deal as Cabella is, or was, a full French international while Thauvin has just potential to unlock. But a 22-year-old has the time to unlock that potential and it seems that within the corridors of St James’ Park he has been deemed as worth the risk.

The club have been tracking him for a long time and now it seems as though they finally have their man. Described by Arsene Wenger a couple of years ago as the brightest young talent in French football the attacker doesn’t have a hassle free past. He rather publicly fell out with fans at Marseille after a recent defeat to Caen and got himself involved with a fan after reportedly being spat on. Mind you if someone gobbed at me I’d give much the same response…

There was also the time he signed for Lille only to get loaned back to Bastia. That summer, without playing a game for Lille, Marseille became interested and he then basically went on strike to force a move. But hey, a Frenchman going on strike isn’t exactly surprising is it?

Anyway, let’s have a look at what Thauvin has had to say about his move to Newcastle and the Premier League:

“I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player. I have come from France to a really big club and am very happy to be here,” said Thauvin.

He added: “It is a big honour to know that Newcastle have been after me for such a long time and that they wanted me that much. They have put their trust in me and I am looking forward to playing for the team.”

Meanwhile, the guy who is tasked with unlocking the potential had this to say: “Florian is a player the club have been watching for a long time and I am delighted that we have been able to sign him.”

“He is a perfect signing for this club – someone who is young, with great potential and is one of the best young players in Europe. He is an exciting, creative talent who can score goals and make assists, and we believe he will have a very bright future at Newcastle.”

*Obligatory YouTube video below*

So signing number five then alongside Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel M’Bemba and the yung lad for the future, maybe, Ivan Toney.

What do you make of this piece of business?

  1. Left footed left winger that can cross sounds like a bit of balance being addressed in the squad to me. Cabella fell over before defenders even got to him, so it’s a good swap as there is nothing to lose in my opinion. If the club can push on and get a good CB in the door before the window slams shut then we have to say it’s been a good window IF we keep all our major players. A back up RB and a few outgoings of fringe players would make it an almost perfect window. Getting a good CB is make or break for our season now.

  2. Hope he plays in his favoured position so we can see the best of him.

Interesting comments from Simpson. “Disappointing to lose Janmaat as it’s obviously a dept were short in” So coaching staff clearly know what we need.

  3. Glad to hear that Stu. Again points to Micah Richards – home grown and can cover both positions. Shame..

  4. Pretty much agree with Sham@2. Apparently he’s good a free kicks, hope so and hope he provides plenty of ammo for Mitro man 😀
Welcome aboard Florian, hope you’re a hit.

  5. Happy to see Cabella go. Know nothing about this lad coming in. What effect will it have on talent like Ayoze and Aarrons.

Does anybody else think Maclaren is just playing Cisse so that some club comes in and takes him off our hands.

    Defence still needs attention

Breaking: Florian Thauvin signed for Newcastle without the agent he’s under contract with & without consideration of his image rights. (1/2)

As a result, @Serguei expects legal action to be taken, presumably by the agent who was left out of the deal. More to come. (2/2)

  8. so the opinion seems to be….we spent loads of money on cabella, and he didn’t work out. we have spent another massive amount of money on thauvin, despite his dodgy track record, he may work out, but if not so what. in the mean time we are leaking goals like flock . however we have signed darlow and lascalles who are both gash, whilst we have satka, good, staylor, willo and dummet, who is injured, waiting to step in there. too top heavy with poor players im afraid.

another relegation battle to look forward to.

  9. My source was correct about Thauvin. He reckons Austin will sign for us next week. Mark or mock my words. 😉

Let’s be positive. We’ve spent £50m and still have time for another.

We can’t transform the club overnight. Ashleys made a statement about bolting the cart to the horse. It seems to be bolted but we’ll know if it’s Dobbin or Sherghar soon. 😯

Let’s be honest, did you really forsee us spending £50m?
Ashley needs some credit, ONLY, for this small oasis. I just hope it’s not a mirage.

  12. I’m optimistic but it’s all for nothing if we don’t get a proper defender in. Fingers crossed…

  13. Troy – you must have faith in your source. I know you don’t usually get involved in transfer speculation, so you must be pretty confident to commit it to a post.

  14. Kim @11 – good on the lad I say. Puts pay to rumours he wasn’t keen on joining us as well I reckon.

I think the lad just needs a good game or 2 to get the crowd on side and he’ll response to that. He strikes me as a player who loves to be appreciated. Hopefully he & Haidara can strike up a good partnership down that left side. I keep my fingers crossed.

    Food for thought maybe

  17. That would be some kind of window if we could get Austin & Abdennour before the window closed

  18. Aye he’s a top c/h watched him a few times on TV bit of a hard nut too doesn’t mind a good tackle, won’t be bullied that’s for sure

  19. Haven’t we been here before though. The run in of a transfer window taking about a CB & CF.

Abdennour is the type of commanding CB presence we need to get in. Austin would be another CF who Thauvin could create for.

  21. Troy, no I didn’t foresee us spending £50m but we needed to and I’d be happier if we brought in a centre back.

I really can’t believe the talk about the Monaco defender considering he’s attracting attention from the likes of Barca.

Would be nice though… I’d even buy my ticket back!

Newcastle are apparently close to a £36m double deal for Abdennour and Kurzawa with Monaco, neither in squad tonight

Newcastle have offered cash + Kemen for Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour. #nufc #asm

fknos if these are true like.

      (Quote)

  24. Hitman – cash plus Kemen seems more likely than Sissoko mate. I’d be amazed if Sissoko was used as part of a swap deal.
    Who’s this other lad tho?

      (Quote)

  25. Hitman – he might yet mate, but it would be for cold hard cash. Him on the right & Thauvin on the left gives us balance now tho so if he goes I’d want another right footed right winger in personally.

      (Quote)

  26. Aaron’s is not ready to be a regular starter. For a start he won’t last 90 mins on a regular basis. He is a work in progress. That Kurzawa is a left back come winger apparently. It’s starting to sound a bit silly now. Will just wait and see what comes out in the wash…

  27. So Troys prediction about the Thauvin signing has come true 😯
Well done mate…. Seeing that we have been chasing him for the pst 3 or 4 seasons, you really stuck to your guns and it finally happened! 😆 😆 😆

  28. as far as i can see there isn’t a single credible report linking NUFC to a deal for Abdennour

Just internet randoms getting kicks by starting rumours (which get reworded and recycled and spread like viruses)

  33. Are we really desperate for a striker. SM likes one up front.
Cisse, mitro, Perez, Rivi plus a couple in the ressies are probably deemed sufficient by the club

  36. Ok…here’s why I don’t think we’ll sign a centre back…

McClaren has seen Colo in training and they’ve given him a 1 year extension to keep him from leaving, so it seems to me that he rates him. Mbmeba has just signed and will expect to play a fair amount of games. McClaren has also come out and said some nice things about Taylor so I expect he’s 3rd choice. We then have Dummett and Lascelles to compete for 4th place.

If we sign another centre back, where would he fit in? Can’t imagine Colo or Mbema being very happy if we signed someone to displace them, and what’s the point in signing someone to displace Taylor and put our younger players further away from the first team?

Maybe a young defender for competition at full back. Can’t see any other defensive incomings.

      (Quote)

  37. Whatever McClaren sees in training isn’t replicated on match days. 3 out of 4 goals conceded have been headers. We also suffered from this last season too so it’s not a one off. Teams will just target us and God help us if Fellaini plays on Saturday and they just boot the ball up to him!

      (Quote)

  38. 2 games in is a bit quick to judge Stuart! New manager, new centre back alongside him.

100% we do not want Mbemba alongside another CB with little or no PL experience. Anyone suggesting otherwise frankly knows very little about football. So it would have to be a decent PL defender and who could we possible get? Evans is the only one that springs to mind.

And anyway, you’re banging a pointless drum. The club already signed Mbemba and gave Colo another year. They’re not going to panic after 2 matches.

      (Quote)

  39. Troy at 55… not jealous about your sause…However you owe me an apology for my Steve McLaren call months before it happened. From memory you were quite vocal with your doubts which made me chuckle because I knew that when you don’t fully comprehend something you tend to make jokes about it! 😛

  43. As people have said, Cabella did very little last season. I know he had his fans, and people pointed the finger at Pardew’s coaching of him, but I just don’t think he was good enough or the right fit for the league personally.

We’ve chased this lad for a while, so let’s hope it pays off. It’s in a positoin that needed addressing, but we’ve still got to sort out the defence imo. Happy enough with the rest of the field. One solid centre back would really help us out.

      (Quote)

  44. Abdennour if they sign him also, will be defo on me way for a season ticket, that would be a fantastic window bar the collo extension

As I said, it’s not a one off. We struggled all last season from balls in the box and to think just one new centre back will fix it, is very optimistic. Colo isn’t getting better.
