Game On! Tottenham v Newcastle

Game On at the Lane
Game On at the Lane
Good afternoon campers. Are we ready for another emotional journey following our beloved NUFC?

Probably not. The win last week was excellent. Not expected yet hugely welcome we now have to do it all over again this time against an in form Tottenham Hotspur which leaves me with the same feeling I had prior to the match last weekend. Hopefully the outcome is the same but I just can’t see it.

So where do we stand in the table? Well picking up at least a point is essential yet unlikely, especially after Bournemouth picked up three points against Manchester United yesterday, but it won’t be enough to climb out of the bottom three. An unlikely win by the odd goal would see us climb to 15th temporarily while an even more unlikely victory with a four goal margin would see us jump to 14th. Yeah…. I thought that too so I’ll pass the drugs around. All the same you can check what the bookmakers say and enhance your odds using this promotion.

A premature outline of the early team news and injury updates can be found in the match preview which went up last night. It also features a look at the history of the fixture, some stats and facts ahead of the game and some random thoughts from myself dotted throughout.

For actual team news you can consult the bottom of the article. I will try to get it published as soon as it becomes available but I’ve been to work all morning so you may have to bear with while I start cooking the roast and so on. If you really can’t wait have a look in the ‘comments’ section below and I’m sure one of our regulars will have it up in seconds.

Likewise if it is a stream you are looking for you are best served turning towards our regulars who will often post links throughout the comments section which is especially useful for those who aren’t at the game or don’t have Sky Sports or who aren’t in a pub watching the match.

Other than all of that there isn’t really much to add apart from a bit of wishful thinking and blind faith. Well sort of faith anyway. As much faith as you can have in a team that has won like five games in a year.

Howay the lads!

  1. Criticising Colo again I see…

We have no idea what his instructions were. If it’s zonal marking, someone else should have picked him up. He was never tight on Dier anyway so couldn’t have stayed with him anyway once he ran so close to that bunch of players.

  2. It’s odd, that’s what I’m saying. He never even got tight to Dier. Usually you see a centre half touching an attacking player to make sure he doesn’t get too far away and to make sure he isn’t given space to do something in our box. He’s an experienced defender, so why didn’t he do that? His mistake or flawed tactics?

  3. Iv kicked a ball or two and to play zonal u all play zonal man on man can be done in zonal but generally someone helping out to double up or allow the defense to concentrate on zonal. In other words it’s not zonal for me

  4. We must replace Cisse with Mitro. Take Colback off and bring Perez on. Play him and Mitro up from with DJ behind

  5. Colo is ****! He’s been **** for the last couple of years. That doesn’t let McClaren off but nobody could do anything with Colo

  6. don’t agree with the blame being put at Colo’s door. For me they were doing zonal marking and it was in Mbemba’s area. Mbemba’s to blame. No challenge

  7. Souness just said if we had a game plan McClaren wouldn’t change it just for being one down. We haven’t got a game plan!

  8. Colo has been a great help over the year but u can’t escape the fact, He’s also been a hindrance for a couple of year now

  9. Souness…what a great manager he was for us…

Anyway, better this half so far. Putting some decent passes together and movement is better. Shame for the **** control by Cisse in the box but then nearly scored. Would be nice to have a shot on target…

  10. That’s what really annoys me about Sissoko, you see him charging forward like that, with a good pass at the end of it, the next minute he could not give a toss

  11. Ash, that’s what I mean he’s a fairweather player who is capable of changing a game if only he’d be consistent .

  12. Who is threatening from the centre though? Seems nobody.

The plan seems to be to attack down the wings mostly. So why isn’t Mitrovic playing?

    Confused by the tactics…

  13. Stu, as the lads in the studio said it’s what you would see in the lower divisions. Very basic with no one comfortable playing it out from the back. Thing is there have been games where we’ve looked much more assured on the ball but we have now lost so many that confidence in ability is lost.

  14. TDS – We have two centre midfielders who get dizzy when they go past the half way line. Sits pitiful. Our centre midfielders are the cause of most of our problems.

  15. No threat through the middle. That’s because all or threats are pushed wide and are out of the game. Super stuff, Steve.

  16. STUART

Because we have 3 defensive midfielders in Colback, Anita and Tiote. Yet Sissoko and Gini are on the wing leaving now Thauvin on the bench. I’d rather see Mitrovic instead of Cisse, Thauvin on the wing and Gini or Sissoko as attacking mid. But I think we tried things like that earlier in the season and it didn’t work either…

  17. Hey. Good work by Colo there too! Though not at the end of the pitch we need him mostly!

I did say it was better this half. We just look sharper.

  18. Where the duck are our centre midfielders!!!!! Jesus man! We should have had someone running into that for a tap in

  19. Right we have missed the chance to win it I reckon so let’s just get a midfielder on, sure it up and see if we can hit them on the break.
