Is Rob Elliot a keeper?

rob-elliotAfter some impressive displays in goal, confidence has been growing in Rob Elliot of late. I for one feel quite comfortable with him in goal and I thought I would look a little in depth at two of our keepers. I am starting with Tim Krul who has been a loyal servant to Newcastle United.

Tim Krul (Dutch)

Tim is 27, he is 6’2″ (1.88m) tall and weighs 11st 6lb (72.56kg)

Tim was signed in July 2006 as a trainee, he’s had loan spells at Falkirk Aug 07 – Jan 08 making 22 appearances in the league, 4 in the cups followed by a loan to Carlisle Nov 08 – Jan 09 making 9 appearances in all competitions.

Tim broke into Newcastle united’s senior team in season 2010/11 after an injury to Steve Harper, eventually usurping him as number one choice. Tim played a full part in season 2011/12 but an injury plagued season 2012/13 saw him only play 24 games for Newcastle. In the 2013/14 season he was only 2 games short of a full season when a knee injury struck. Season 2014/15 saw him make 30 appearances and sadly for Tim this season was cut short after a season ending injury after just 8 appearances. Tim has made a total of 152 appearances for Newcastle in the Premier league, 6 in the FA cup and 11 in the capital one cup. He has made 8 in the UEFA cup and played 8 times for the Netherlands.

I will stick to his statistics for this season when comparing to Rob Elliot as appearances to date are not that far apart 8 and 13 respectively.

Tim Krul Stats;

This season Tim has made 8 appearances and he has made 34 saves facing 145 shots of which 50 were on goal. He has one clean sheet in 720 minutes played. He has conceded 17 goals and his save percentage is 66.7.

Tim’s positioning is quite good. His kicking isn’t too bad, though he prefers his left foot. For me his main fault is that he punches the ball away when he should be making the catch. This puts us under undue pressure in my opinion. He has pretty good reflexes and he jumps well enough. Like Elliot, he dives well too but he isn’t too hot on stopping long range shots and we have fallen foul to a few this season. Right now I don’t feel he has as much strength as Elliot but that could be injuries taking their toll.

Rob Elliot (English)

Rob at 29 is two years older than Krul and will be 30 in April 2016, funny he seemed younger than that to me. He is 6’3″ (1.90m) and weighs 96kg.

His youth career started at Erith Town and he turned professional in 2004 with Charlton Athletic who he made 96 appearances with from 2004-2011. He had loan spells with Bishops Stortford (6 apps), Notts County (4 apps) and Accrington Stanley (30 apps) over two loan spells.

In August 2011 he signed for Newcastle on a 5 year contract making his debut on 20th September in the league cup. His first Premier League start was in the 2012/2013 season against Southampton after an injury to Tim Krul, conceding a goal in the 3rd minute.

This season had seen Elliot become 3rd choice keeper behind Karl Darlow but when Tim suffered a season ending injury, Darlow had an ankle knock and Elliot was called into action. We were close to losing Elliot who wanted first team football but luckily for us he stayed and he actually signed a new long term contract back in January 2014. He made his first appearance this season on October 18th against Norwich City, a game we won 6.2.

Rob Elliot stats;

Rob has played 13 Premier League games to date and he has made 42 saves facing 189 shots, of which 63 were on goal. He has 3 clean sheets in 1170 minutes played and has conceded 21 goals. Interestingly his save percentage is exactly the same as Tim Krul’s at 66.7 though he has played more minutes than Tim.

So the question is, who is the better keeper? Is Rob now a keeper as it were or is it too early to tell? Tim’s weakness is saving long shots but his long passing is good and he rarely commits a foul. Elliot commands the box well and is seemingly unflappable when dealing crosses, catching the ball well more often than not. Both keepers would appear to have good reflexes and agility. Both dive well and in truth there is little to separate them other than Tim’s tendency to punch. They both seem strong and vocal and both have had to suffer a very poor defense in front of them for long periods, though the signs are that the defense have picked up of late.So my final thoughts would be this;

For me I’m finding it hard to split them, though i am tending to go with Elliot purely based on the fact he doesn’t punch as much as Krul and seems less flappable, at least for now. It will be a fair while before we see Tim back in action and even when fit he will take time to regain match fitness – so we have Rob in the first team for a fair while yet. It is also clear to me that Darlow is not quite ready to be a regular Premier League starter yet so we should be looking to bring in a loan keeper to back up Elliot until Krul’s return.

What are your thoughts on Tim and Rob, I would love to hear.

  2. That’s a very simplistic view of Ben Arfa’s time at NUFC. He was put in an impossible position and forced out. I am not going to get into it again, but the fans loved him and a decent manager could have channeled that to keep him contented.

But NUFC 17 th richest club but still should not pay 14 mil for Townsend. The more you look at it, and even with the coming riches, he is worth about 6.

when ya talking about a player transfer you got to look at it like the money would be coming out ya own bank account,if you would not do the deal if it was you paying why should the club,on the other hand if you would pay the money from ya own pocket then the club should do the deal

  9. TAE: I agree with you that Townsend is a risk. If we pay 12-14 mil he will want commensurate wages. He is an England international but also not even in the Spurs matchday squad.

Given the stats that TAE posted (which l had already seen) I would not mind if we pass. Which player would we get: the one Poch doesn’t play or the one Levy wants to extort 14 mil for. Is he any better than Riviere?

      (Quote)

  10. I am not one of those who think buying Townsend would stifle the development of our current players but would he really be a step up? As TAE points out his experience is mainly in lower leagues. The fact he played a couple of good games for England seems to have added 10 mil to his price.

What you are saying is blog comments aren’t worth the pixels they’re written on… Well that applies to your comments and mine. People don’t tend to be well off the mark when rating players they watch every week.

If you were a spurs fan looking into this blog for info on Goofran or Thauvin I think you would get a canny view of them.

We’ve given both players a chance, no malice involved just a honest view of their ability.

I don’t mind Townsend but I’m not as keen as you seem to be. You’ve got to look at his stats and wonder if he’s worth 14mil. I reckon 9 mill would be fair but its still risky.

A loan would suit us better..

  15. I am quite comfortable with our team now, although adding Berahino or Lacazette would make things even better. Conclusions:

    1. Perhaps the best thing to happen has not been a transfer, it has been to move Wijnaldim to number 10.

    2. They said 2 months ago they would not buy a defender so why even think about that.

    3. We finally have a playmaker. Even if Shelvey is inconsistent it offers a threat that we didn’t have with 2 defensive mids.

    4. With the the return of a few players we have a few options which are necessary because being Newcastle we will get more injuries.

    5. A point a game is about where i thought we would be and it spurred Ashley into action.

    6. There is still time.

  16. Gash – I think you & I both know it depends heavily on the poster.
I see on here sometimes people making comment on posters from Eds blog. I don’t know who on their site is rational and who’s barking – so to look at a Spurs blogger I’m taking the word of a complete unknown.
Fans watch what the club let them see. So many on here have written Thauvin off on a handful of games – yet Aarons who has played about the same over a longer period is the next big thing.
How many ex pros or pundits have came out and said we are crazy for even considering him.

If people don’t want him in then I have no issue with that. It’s this writing the lad off or saying his overrated, when all they have to judge him on is MOTD or a cockney blogger.

not seen any1 write arrons off meself peeps have mentioned he is a bit injure pron though

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy: I could have offered an opinion on townsend because I see quite a few Spurs games. However, the lad doesn’t play. There is the story of the fight with the physio but that cannot fully explain his absence.

Berahino plays a bit and he picked a fight with the chairman and we played Barton as soon as he got out of the nick. They don’t rate him as seen by his loan spells and as AMF said they have been giving away England caps as free gifts in a box of Frosties recently.

      (Quote)

  19. Every time I have seen Aarons he has shown something. He has a lot of talent. The club have a year option but should sign him up if he can stay fit for 2 months.

I would actually prefer to take a risk on him than Townsend unless Townsend is a loan because no way will Levy sell for less than 10 mil.

      (Quote)

  20. TAE – I didn’t say anyone wrote him off, I said some people have him down as the next big thing – he was the next Sterling based on less than a handful of games.

Eric – you could watch a few Arsenal games and not see Walcott or Oxlade Chambermaid get on either – does that make them ****?.
Pulis hasn’t been playing Berahino – does that make him ****?.
Them not playing could be coz there are better players ahead of them, or they have a falling out with the manager – that’s no reflection on their footballing ability.

      (Quote)

  21. if arrons was fit id rather give him a chance to prove himself than pay the townsend blood money, hes defo got the talent to add to the team in my opinion on what ive seen, and also think he would chip in with a few more goals than townsend 😉

      (Quote)

  22. <<<<<<<<<<<<<< bets im not the only 1 on here that would rather give arrons his chance if he was fit rather than pay over the top for townsend 😮

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy: Ox and Walcott are often injured and have a lot of excellent players they have to compete with – Ozil, Giroud, Alexis etc. Spurs do not have the same quality except for Kane. Plus they weren’t banished to the reserves. I never said Townsend was **** so don’t make things up.

      (Quote)

  24. Aren’t we the only serious suiters left for townsend? I think he turned down West brom. I don’t think we are desperate so I cannot see how Levy has the upper hand.

  25. So in the summer we were prepared to pay £24m for Berahino but WBA said no. We want to sign him now and he wants to move but WBA now not wanting to sell. Forget it and move on. What on earth has he achieved for WBA to think he is worth more than £24m? It’s a joke but unfortunately we have left ourselves in this position.

      (Quote)

  26. aussie @ 247 i agree with you there.

also – play 3 good games on the trot for newcastle & your a £30/£40 million player (just like tiote & ben arfa) according to some.

come on shelvey just the 2 more half decent games & you’ll be worth £30 million at least!!

      (Quote)

  27. Playing 4-2-3-1 does not give us width, especially with Sissoko out there. Townsend would give us more width, but I think there are better out there.

If Napoli actually want to give us Lorenzo Insigne and £10m I’d let them have Sissoko. On the other wing Florian Kainz from Rapid Vienna has 5 gaols and 11 assists from 19 games. only 23 and £3m That gives us the width to play 4-1-4-1 with Gini & Shelvey central

Up front if we cant get Behahino then Michy Batshuayi is at OM throw in a few of our frenchies for the deal.

      (Quote)

  28. This Townsend **** is doing my heed in,14 mil for a guy thats played a handful of games, you have to have a special fitness program for him why?? ime sure Siko can cover the right wing until summer we need a good c/b and maybe a striker to cover for injury,I cannot see a lot of good PL teams knocking the door down for him if he’s that good

      (Quote)

  29. Agreed Ice. Why don’t anyone else want him? It’s one thing to add to the squad for injuries etc but £14m? There’s a lot better value than that just to add back up.

      (Quote)

  30. PEACE WNBA chairman says he’s wants 30 mil for him as he turned down 25mil in the summer,no way owls lad

      (Quote)

  31. Ice – they’ve also reportedly offered £9m for Ross McCormack. Maybe it’s offers like that that Levy is basing his valuation on mate.

WBA can **** themselves for £30m though.

      (Quote)

  32. Ice, smart move by Boro that, they’ll be getting someone proven at PL level.

Don’t fancy berahino one bit, too much baggage and too costly, I would be after loaning Remy then look again for a striker in the summer.

      (Quote)

  33. Sharpy, I like Phillips and still think he would do well for us. Jabba has lost his bargaining tool with Levy now too as Matty was apparently our other choice if not Townsend.

      (Quote)

  34. Ice, I do wish they would look for a CB too, it’s beyond foolish to rely on Taylor as back up because he simply will not stay fit.

      (Quote)

  35. Kim – yeah, he’s also very honest in his self assessment. I’ve always liked the kid, and do appreciate the work he puts in. But a striker is judged on goals as he says – good on him for saying it and hopefully they’ll start going in for him soon.

      (Quote)

  36. The biggest problem we have is that when you look at the likes of Bournemouth paying £12m for a player who plays for Wolves, hasn’t scored a PL goal or hasn’t even played a game in the PL then the likes of WBA and Spurs are correct in asking the prices they’re asking.

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy, yeah I really want him to come good as he actually really wants to be here unlike some forwards you could mention.

      (Quote)

  38. A lot of the new clubs who came up can afford to splash the cash and up their wages to gain some parity with the bigger hitters. That’s what FFP was all about. Sadly we are most likely at our top end on wages already so will have to offload to bring the wage bill down to let more in. My guess is it’s a fine financial balancing act .

      (Quote)

  39. Players proven in the PL cost a bloody fortune! Naismith £8.5m and he’s just been a squad player at Everton for years, going to a club that I think will get relegated, £14m for Townsend who has barely achieved anything despite showing promise for years and how much for Berahino??? It’s no wonder we keep going abroad…

Both Townsend and Berahino seem to be valued by their clubs at their peak value. If they don’t perform well for us over the next year or so, their value will plummet…

      (Quote)

  40. 30m for Berahino 😆
Fuk that’s like us asking 35m for Carroll after 1/2 a season of good footy! 😆 😆 (have we spent that money yet?) 😎

      (Quote)

  41. Some crew on here are seemingly not getting it.. clubs value these players at these prices not necessarily because that is what the players are worth, it’s because someone will be silly enough to actually pay it….

      (Quote)

  42. Aussie

Because there’s now a premium on home grown players. And definitely a premium on players who have proven they can cut it in English football, rather than taking a gamble on a player from a foreign league. Even though many of the more spectacular players have been foreign, many many more have failed in the PL. There are loads of solid but unspectacular players in the PL, most of them British or at least been playing in England since a teenager.

Look at the likes of Batty, Howey, Peacock, Barton, Watson, even Rob Lee and Speedo. The last 2 were very good players too, but the best thing about them was that they were pretty consistent. They weren’t put off when it was cold, the opposition was a but physical or the crowd were baying for their blood. They were brought up on British football and it’s very different here.

That’s why I have some sympathy for Thauvin. A young lad coming into our club with our passionate fans really needs an arm around his shoulder and some guidance to thrive. All the expectation on him and a few nothing performances and suddenly the pressure is really on. It wouldn’t have been the same for him at any other point in his career, so it’s hard for him to adjust mentally. Physically too perhaps, although the club can control that to more of an extent.

Pretty likely that Townsend and Berahini would do a good job for us. But would they do an excellent job like their price tags seem to indicate? Not too sure…

      (Quote)

  43. Sorry TDS, I have seen nothing to suggest that English players have a bit more steel than players from other countries .. the attitudes of English players is abysmal. The so called better English players are a bunch of over paid Bentley driving wankers.. they are more rock stars than footballers.. it’s no wonder English football has been so starved of success… even the mediocre carry on like the elite. Most are a waste of space…

  44. Georgio they are not rare, Extinct perhaps, but the evidence that they ever existed is unconvincing.

  45. Well with us pulling out of deals for Townsend and Berhino , thenputting in a 1.5 million bid for a 21 year old striker from Esypanol . I think its safe too say , normal service has resumed transfer wise . Still at least we got Shelvey in and his signing alone may very well save us .

      (Quote)

  46. Axel – there’s talk of a bid for Sandro too. We almost got him last summer until Barca pulled the plug. Would love that to happen.

    Prem 😛

      (Quote)

  47. When other clubs are spending silly money then that sets the economics for other transfers I’m afraid. We either have to go along for the ride and pay the money or take a risk on a cheaper foreign player or just do nothing and risk getting relegated. What makes it even worse for us is that the selling club sees our league position, Dee’s the money at stake if we get relegated and just add 20% onto the players asking price. It’s still cheap in comparison to getting relegated.

For us it’s simple; Either take a ****, or get off the pot!

      (Quote)

  48. Oh and from a players point of view. If I was Townsend or Berahino and had 18 months of my contract left I’d be telling the chairmen that unless they set a reasonable transfer fee for me then I would see out the remaining 18 months of my contract and go on a free.

      (Quote)

  49. STUART

I’m sure the agent of Berahino and Townsend are saying just that. While the players just want to play. Both have an outside chance of being in the Euros squad.

So the club can just point out that they hold their registration and pay their wages, so they’ll only sell them if the buying club meets the asking price.

Besides, there are other clubs involved. So the selling clubs will wait to see if another club comes out and meets the asking price. There’s always one mug (i.e. Liverfool) to pay above market value…
