Everton V Newcastle United – Premier League Preview

Can the Toon tame the Toffees?
Can the Toon tame the Toffees?
With results going more or less our way tonight, it places more emphasis on the importance of getting a good result at Goodison Park tomorrow. A win will more than likely see the Magpies climb out of the relegation zone.

Both teams had active winter transfer windows, however for Everton they only signed one first team player in Senegalese striker Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow. He comes with pace and power but unfortunately for his club, he will not be featuring against Newcastle. Their other 2 signings are prospects for the future, while the most notable exit from the Evertonian camp was Aiden McGeady, who has left on loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

For the Toon, we have the pleasure of having welcomed Jon-Jo Shelvey, Henri Saivet, Andros Townsend and the Ivorian striker Seydou ‘Rhino’ Doumbia – the latter having a pretty prolific record in the same Country Everton’s Niasse has just came from – Russia. Despite a late push for Saido Berahino it was not to be and the Toon also failed to land a left back having seen negotiations fail (thankfully) for Jose Enrique and (not so thankfully) Kieran Gibbs amongst others.

Previous Meetings:

1) Of the 169 games between the two sides, Everton just shade it with 69 wins to Newcastle’s 65.
2) Newcastle have not won this away fixture since September 2010 courtesy of a Hatem Ben Arfa stunner.
3) In fact, the Magpies have only recorded 3 wins at Goodison Park since the turn of the Century (15 games). Everton have won 8 of those games.
4) Everton have won 6 of the last 8 games against Newcastle.
5) One glimmer of hope is that Everton have not won in the league since they bet the Toon back in December.
6) Unfortunately for us – both Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku love playing Newcastle. They have 8 goals and 4 assists between them from a collective total of 12 games against us. That’s a goal a game…

Team News:

Everton:

Oumar Niasse misses out as he arrived after the midday cut off point. Muhamed Besic (hamstring) faces another fortnight out whilst Kevin Mirallas (tendon) misses out. Tim Howard is touch and go as he recovers from a knee injury. Tony Hibbert remains a long term absentee.

Newcastle United:

Flying winger and new signing Andros Townsend looks set to make his debut whilst Seydou Doubia may also feature if he gets his visa in time. This game may come too soon for Jack Colback (hamstring) but Paul Dummett (also hamstring) is expected to be available. Vurnon Anita (you guessed it…hamstring) is not expected to be have sufficiently recovered whilst Gabriel Obertan (yes…hamstring again) is not back until March – but he can expect to play little part in the remainder of this season provided this hamstring ‘coincidence’ does not become an epidemic…Tim Krul and Massaido Haidara (both knee) remain long term absentee’s along with Curtis Good.

Shamrock’s Blasts from the Past:

Just a little reminder of some of the players that have worn both the Toffee’s and Magpies’ shirts in previous years then; Sylvain Distin, Allesandro Pistone, Dan Gosling, Duncan Ferguson, Steve Watson, Peter Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne, the late Gary Speed, David Ginola and finally Paul Bracewell. So there you go – some cracking players and mutually appreciated legends – some not so much!

An important game for us then, but an extremely difficult one.

Referee:

Officiating this one will be 36-year-old Craig Pawson, who first officiated a Premier League game between Swansea and our very own Toon. The result? 1-0 to Swansea, who would beat us in the same fixture later that year by 3 goals to Nil with none other than a certain Mr Shelvey scoring! Pawson has officiated 6 Newcastle games since the beginning of the 2012/2013 season – with the Magpies registering 2 wins.

  1. A decent coach, Sharpy could make us harder to beat by being better organised. If we can keep a clean sheet we can’t lose.

BB – It’s not Ashley who decided what that money was spent on.

  2. Well he’s not resigned then. Thought not. Sacked in the morning? Doubt it. If we fail to win on Saturday then the Toon Nation EXPECTS McClaren and Carr to be on their bikes. I suspect Charnley went for McClaren on Carr;s say so.

I’d be happy to see Charnley sacked, but it wont happen. Carr and McClaren out. We cant afford to dilly dally about.

  3. said the day he was appointed it was a mistake.
the whole point of wanting rid of percy parsnip was to get better, not worse – twice.
    will they ever learn ?

  4. What is all the more staggering is that David Moyes is actually available and won’t cost a single penny! Can you imagine what Moyes would have achieved at Everton if he’d have been given £80m to spend?

      (Quote)

  5. were never really in it,” McClaren told BBC Sport. “The crowd and the players here were nervous but we did not capitalise on that. Unfortunately we then had injuries in defence which meant we had to reshuffle. “The new signings will take time to gel. At West Brom we will have 52,000 cheering us on and we will have to show a reaction. We have shown we can react before. Fans want to see fight and we need to show it on Saturday.”

Had to reshuffle?! what a CB for a CB – Hardly a reshuffle like. He keeps banging on about having 52k back at SJP, does that mean the away games have now been written off then?.

  6. It could be Ashleys biggest act yet, hiring Moyes.

I’d be very surprised if he did as the blokes a total numpty

      (Quote)

  7. Ashley said last season that he’d only sell the club when we got silverware – or in the top 4. I wonder if top 4 of the Championship counters, coz if he sticks with these jokers, that’s exactly what we’ll be aiming for next season.

  8. Lee Ryder reckons McClarens future is to be debated before the WBA game with Moyes waiting in the wings of talks break down…

  9. nee chance Sharpy – top 4 of the first division maybe.
    Championship ? no chance.
we will be torn a new arsehole in the championship.
42 matches plus cup games ha ha
    not with this ‘head coach’

  10. Steve McClaren has just told Radio Newcastle “two late penalties flattered Everton.” I mean what is this man on! It could have been 5-0 before our first effort on goal!

      (Quote)

  11. Flattered them. Is this a wind up? We should have been 5 down by the time they got their first penalty. What a gobshiye. I’ve really had enough of this clown now. And the board. Total bloody joke.

  12. Just watched his interview on SSN app and he says we went backs in tonight’s performance and too many players under performed – but all the while he’s got a stupid grin on his face. He then goes on to say we need a reaction on Saturday in front of 52k … why Steve?. Have we been THAT much better at home like?.
You don’t need reactions ********, you need wins!!!!!

  14. got a little bit of bad news for smacca
there won’t be 52k fans at the match on saturday.
45k delusional geordies maybe, but 52 ? no way.
We weren’t aggresive enough in the first half because you set us up too defensive for a team that was on the rocks. You’re a *****, plain and simple. You don’t know how to set up a team in an aggressive manner, to have a go from the off. to go and GET the points needed.
    ***** boy.
You have modelled this team in your own image. An easy push over, with a soft middle.
we were pathetic tonight as were YOU.
do the fans a favour and do one. Oh wait….. you’re a ***** and dont have the balls.
    No surprise

  15. moyes was the guy when we were working on a shoe string and ive all ready lost me money cause thats who i bet on before mac got the job,he aint the answer now if we spending dosh

      (Quote)

  16. the only player that earned his wages was elliot the rest should be docked a weeks wages

      (Quote)

  17. STUART79
moyes aint the answer now bud if we were working on a shoe string yes but we aint any more

      (Quote)

  18. We need somebody with a track record of building a club inside and out. We need a manager who makes us hard to beat and keeps us up. That’s the thing about McClaren, why doesn’t he for away games just pack the midfield and make us bloody hard to break down and hit on the break? It isn’t working his other way. A good coach would have worked that out by now. In fact any coach should have worked it out.

      (Quote)

  19. wenger would prob be me 1st choice though but geting him to leave the gunners might be hard work

      (Quote)

  20. @stu

SM isn’t a good coach. We’re getting similar results to Derby and boro.

I said the day we signed him, thats me finished with the toon, new signings enticed me back.

Without mbemba, I can see a defeat on Sat. Glad I’m working

      (Quote)

  21. but 1 things for sure if i was fatboy i would not be leting whos in charge now spend me hard earned dosh 😉

      (Quote)

  22. starting perez up front was asking to get beat in my opinion he cant hold the ball up simply as that

      (Quote)

  23. Gashley
As I’ve said, you stick with SM we are gannin doon.
Of course I would want better than Clark, but my point us, anything is better than sticking with a Manager who is steering us to relegation.
It’s a simple point, but lost on you.

      (Quote)

  24. Anything is not better.. You’ve come up with no realistic names that would make us better.

Is Sissoko etc really gonna listen to Clarkie? 😳

      (Quote)

  25. TAE – Are you going to come up with any better coaches than Redknapp and I won’t even mention your other suggestion. Moyes is the only realistic and talented enough coach at the moment. The only thing we know is that if we stick with McClaren we will go down. Just wonder when Ashley will realise this. It was 9 games to go last time when he appointed Shearer which was too late so I reckon anything but a win on Sat and he should realise. Although that only papers over the cracks and we will be beaten again the next game.

      (Quote)

  26. STUART79
you not saying wenger aint talented i hope ya seen his champions league record got arsenal there so many times on the trot im losing count as for moyes when i was saying him this time last year the likes of you were shouting for klopp and god knows who else

      (Quote)

  27. It’s the wrong time for us learning how to gel…

Did someone say shelvey was like Gerrard. Shelvey is better at pointing than passing..

      (Quote)

  28. The Times saying that there is no relegation clause in the new players contracts. Looks like Mike will have another big wage bill on his hands if he doesn’t act fast and stop this relegation inevitability

      (Quote)

  29. STUART79
<<<<<<<<<<<<< also points out moyes is decent manager on a shoe string but no way is moyes a top manager what is what we really need

      (Quote)

  30. TAE – Klopp was out of work and available. If you think Wenger will give up Arsenal to manage here you are just stupid – no other word for it I’m afraid with all due respect…

So, again, who is your realistic choice to take over? If you want to carry on stupid games I will want Guardiola or Ancelloti

      (Quote)

  31. Firstly – How do you know he’s not a top manager? His record at Man Uts looks better every single week. But the fact is he’s available and he’s the best about of who is available for what we need. We need a club re built and a manager who will make us hard to beat and keep us up

      (Quote)

  32. Although I have to be honest and say considering our record this season I’m not even sure a new manager will save us. We may be too far gone;

Weve won 5 games from 24 this season and we probably need 6 wins from our last 14 matches.

It really will require championship winning form.

      (Quote)

  33. Moyes is the ONLY realistic manager. Getting him is hard, sacking SM, even harder.

Simple things in life seem difficult at Newcastle utd

      (Quote)

  34. Gashley – Getting Moyes would be a **** of ****! He’d jump at the chance and most importantly for Ashley, he’s free and available.

      (Quote)

  35. @stu.

It would be at different clubs. If it was so easy, we would of tried before now, even before SM

      (Quote)

  36. Was was in a job when we appointed McClaren, Gashley. Don’t forget Ashley has never appointed a manager who has been in work since he’s owned the club.

      (Quote)

  37. Stuart. Normally I would agree with you about packing midfield but I think now we must go all out to win games. We can no longer afford to sit back and rely on break away goals. After all last night we played the first half with only one up so we’re we not trying to pack midfield.

      (Quote)

  38. I don’t believe a change of coach will save us.
    Lee Clarke nor David Moyes.
Even Jose Mourinho who is unemployed atm couldn’t keep us up.
The team is a shambles, and the club is a hopeless basket case.
we are going down, barring a miracle.
we will be out of reach by the middle of march.
Start planning for life in the lower leagues.

      (Quote)

  39. we cant even pass the ball to each other and just keep posession for a few minutes.
we are too slow, always 2nd to the ball, cant tackle, cant defend and can’t score goals.
    Absolutely hopeless in every department.
NO actually, thats not quite true, Elliott and Saivet played well yesterday.
But the rest of the team were utter garbage.

      (Quote)

  40. wtf was Mitro trying to do with that missed attempt ?
Shearer would have buried that with his head I reckon.
    **** poor

      (Quote)

  41. Groucho – we went all out to win the game last night. Well, after going behind anyway. But the defence is a load of bollix so inevitably we conceded more.
We are on a one way ticket out of the premier league mate

      (Quote)

  42. get beat on saturday and i think we will be looking for a new manager.

the way ash works we could even end up with 4 or 5 before the season ends 😯

i’m going to a KK talk-in tonight at the ramside hall – i’ll ask him if he fancies being one of the 4 or 5 again 😀

      (Quote)

  43. Still very angry, mostly that there seemed no fight in the players. Tactics very odd last night, why are we buying wingers and so called creative players yet play so defensively 😕 long punts up to a loan Perez 😕 My real anger still lay with the board though, how many seasons has our defence needed sorting out properly, it is weaker than a babe, poor Elliot left to save us time and time again. Shelvey and Townsend very disappointing, and that lazy **** Sissoko needs shooting, I have totally had enough of the guy now, he doesn’t give a **** about us from what I can see. I have defended SM who has had us play well here and there but last night was pitiful and his tactics were poor. Need a new face in but please not Rogers.

      (Quote)

  44. Stuart: don’t know where you get this Championship winning form argument from? If we beat West Brom that is 24 points from 25 games. So that is almost a point a game. Carry on on that path and you get 37 points which is very close to survival.

I know I am assuming a win against WB but I do so just to point out your hyperbole about Championship winning form. A win at the weekend and the mood will lift a lot, and a couple of wins changes the whole scenario.

We should not be in this fckin mess and there is plenty of blame to go around. McClaren probably has the Chelsea game because there are 18 days until the game after that. Knowing our lot though, they would wait until 3 days before the next game to appoint a replacement.

      (Quote)

  45. i can’t wait to see the exaggerations that everybody wanted Townsend as well (probably from Troysta). There were serious doubts and from what I saw most said get him on loan. If he is the replacement for Thauvin then why didn’t Schteve get more from Thauvin and is Andros destined for the same fate?

He might turn out to be brilliant for us but the Spurs fans didn’t seem that bothered to get shot and 34 games in 4 years doesn’t bode well.

I think there was pretty much agreement on Shelvey though. It was almost universal that we should get him if we could.

      (Quote)

  46. The problem is we just don’t have adequate defensive players and now we have injuries and suspensions to deal with. God forbid Elliot gets crocked, can you imagine if we have to go with Darlow, Lascelles an un match fit Saylor and ever slowing Colo and an often AWOL Janmaat. We had Aarons at LB last night ffs, it’s a bloody joke, total mess. Even allowing for Steve having a weak back four the whole set up last night was odd. Mitro may not be scoring his chances but his hold up play is tidy and he helps out defensively too. I don’t understand Perez up front on his own I really don’t.

      (Quote)

  47. I think we all agree that as good as the window seemed in as much as what was spent they failed to address the real weak areas adequately and that is ultimately what will cost us.

      (Quote)

  48. It is not impossible that we will beat WBA on Saturday. We had a calamitous defeat to smarmy Alan’s lot and bounced back to beat Liverpool and Spurs. That was under McClaren and I doubt he will be sacked before Saturday.

Don’t get me wrong, McClaren has this squad underperforming but you never know… And suggesting Clarkie is insane. That whole argument is Troy not wanting to discuss the issues and just wanting a windup.

      (Quote)

  49. Got to feel for poor Gary Nev mind, talking tactics not as easy as actually doing it for him is it.

      (Quote)

  50. There was also almost universal agreement that picking 2 from 3 of Colback, Anita and Tiote as defensive mids wasn’t working and that we needed better midfielders and a playmaker in the mould of Cabaye.

At various times the fan base have said all of the defensive mids were *****, then to move Sissoko or Wijnaldum there only to say no after they had a good game on the wing or as a number 10. A couple of games ago Gini was being lauded as too good for us and one of the buys of the season (in the press at least). Now after one bad game he is ***** ???????

Basically, we needed what we got AND more. Specifically a center back and left back.

      (Quote)

  51. Eric, Gini just needs to play away like he does at home, but he is definitely one of our better players, if not the best.

      (Quote)

  52. But, how do you fix it if you assume McClaren will not be sacked before WBA. We can cobble together a back four of:

    Janmaat Taylor Coloccini Colback

BTW, I dont think Lacelles has a brain so him being suspended is no big miss. I saw him in his first ever game for NUFC in Milwaukee and he gave away a stupid penalty after 10 minutes and was lucky to stay on the pitch. Ring any bells?

      (Quote)

  53. Kimtoon: I remember you said we might get beat by double figures by Liverpool after they spanked Southampton and we got tw@ted by Palace 🙂 To be fair I thought we would be lucky to hold them to 0-3.

What I am saying is there is still hope.

      (Quote)

  54. Eric, yes there’s always hope mate 😀
Seriously it’s not looking too good at the moment, I watched highlights of the Scum game v City and they were fighting for their lives and in Defoe they always look like they can get a goal. Saturdays game is huge now and I am dreading it mate. Last night was so disappointing I said I would be content with a point but it’s the manner of the loss for me, just terrible from start to finish and it could of been 5 or 6 nil if we are honest.

      (Quote)

  55. Eric we need to win 40% of our remaining games or go on a very good unbeaten run with a few draws and wins. That’s Championahip winning form. You can assume we will beat everybody if you want but then that’s dreaming…

      (Quote)

  56. Stuart: no it is not Championship winning form. To get to 40 points we need 19 points with 14 games remaining. That is 1.36 points per game.

The current leaders have 50 points from 24 games. That is 2.08 points per game.

I know we are in dire trouble but your Championship winning analogy is still a false one and paints the picture worse than it is.

      (Quote)

  57. What on earth happens to our forwards when we play away? They were all either missing or dreadful last night. No one to hold the ball, get their head up and pick a pass. It’s like pinball when we go forward. If I see Janmaat and Sissoko trying to play each other in down the touchline one more time I’ll explode.
Saivet looked good, Lascelles not too bad, Shelvey panicy and Townsend is Obertan with hair.
