How Norwich, Bournemouth, Villa and Sunderland’s results look from a Newcastle perspective

I’m not one for paying too much attention to how all the ‘teams around us’ are doing. My philosophy has always been, when your chances of achieving your goals (in footballing terms) rest in your own hands, why worry about what everyone around is doing?

Well, in an all-too-familiar season where maintaining our top-flight status is a major concern, sometimes it’s hard not to take a step back and see how our prospects look based on the performances of teams in a similarly perilous position.

In my very first article for NUFC Blog, my ‘philosophies’ have taken a back seat and I’ve compiled a short a run-down of how today’s results look from a Magpie perspective.

West Ham 1-0 Sunderland

The Hammers did just enough to squeeze past our local rivals Sunderland with a 1-0 win at the Boleyn ground today. The Mackems’ improvement on the pitch since ‘Big Sam’ took over has certainly been evident this season but by all accounts they were made to rue some good missed chances as well as a Jack Rodwell goal that was ruled out for offside.

With arguably winnable games against Crystal Palace and Southampton up next for Sunderland, here’s to hoping that their far from potent streak in front of goal continues.

Leicester City 1-0 Norwich

Leonardo Ulloa’s late goal lifted the roof off the King Power stadium and could prove to be crucial to our chances of our survival come the end of the season. We’ve now played one game less than the Canaries and just a point against next opponents Stoke City, will see us out the bottom three.

This defeat will no doubt have dented an already fragile Norwich psyche. Disappointing losses to Villa and Liverpool in 2016 all point to signs that Alex Neil’s men are in freefall with less than a third of the season left to go.

Stoke City 2-1 Aston Villa

Let’s face it, Villa were already down and deservedly so. Remi Garde’s men have been woeful this season but this defeat at the Britannia Stadium further cemented any chances the Midlands club may have of a late revival.

With Villa fans famously mocking our relegation plight back in the 2008/2009 season, it looks almost a certainty that the Midlands’ supposedly ‘biggest club’ will have to suffer the same fate this year.

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

It was a very decent point indeed for plucky Bournemouth at Vicarage Road this afternoon. Both sides missed very good chances according to the match report posted on BBC football and should the remarkable happen and we pick up three points at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday, we’ll be placed just two points behind Eddie Howe’s Cherries side.

In truth, of all the sides in and around this Catalina Mixer of relegation-threatened sides in the Premier League this season, it is AFC Bournemouth that I’d most like to see avoid the drop (assuming we do as well of course!).

It was unfathomable how we managed to pull-off our 1-0 smash and grab at the Vitality stadium earlier in the season (in truth, we deserved nothing out of that game) and for a club with such limited resources, it is refreshing to see them stick to their guns and play exciting, attacking football.

What did you make of today’s results then folks? Have your say in the comments below.

  3. I’ve read a few things on here about Aarons and we having a year option on him but I have seen nothing on this in the press. All I read is that he’s out of contract in the summer.

Question; If you were Aarons why would you sign a new contract at NUFC and why would you do it now?

  4. Would love to see a win v Stoke but why would we? We’ve been ***** all season and a few sound bites from Taylor and Co goes in one ear and out..

    Wonder If Doumbia will start

  5. Gashley, the situation is grim mate, I just hope the players and coaches really realise how grim, all we hear are sound bites about how they think we’ll be ok. Now I appreciate they have to say all the right things but they aren’t fooling us and I hope they aren’t fooling themselves.

At the fans forum all the talk was that they’d seen enough to be confident we’d be safe. How can 6 wins all season instil confidence 😯 ❓
There is a lot of this going on me thinks 🙄 https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=head+in+the+sand&biw=1093&bih=479&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwiQ34n81JzLAhVHOxoKHQcICsAQ_AUIBigB#imgrc=O6Mcx_qD6R41-M%3A

  9. Stuart,
Of course Aarons will sign a new contract (If offered one) , which other club will will keep him on the treatment table for half the season then play him out of position when he is fit ?

  10. I think we will be out of the relegation zone before we play Stokerly (because Chelsea will beat Norwich). And then we will draw against Stoke.

  11. Belated Happy Birthday Kim….and remember, when it comes to painting naked ladies it’s not the winning that counts, it’s the taking part

  12. Whats the big deal with Aarons? The lad has proved nothing to date and everyone seems to be concerned about losing him… he is a long way from making a real impact (if he does at all) and is over hyped.
He is nowhere near ready to make an impact at Arsenal. ?.. I think the press are winding up gullible Toon fans!

      (Quote)

  13. AMF: have you seen Aarons play? (when fit 🙂 ). He is fast, he has real skill. He does things that most other players don’t. He is only 19 as well.

      (Quote)

  14. Eric, please. Of course I have seen him play… he is like a myriad of other fast and tricky 19 year olds.. poor decision making, fading in out of games/inconsistent.. I feel for the lad, he is being singled out as the special one by Toon fans who are hungry for a new champion footballer.. If Aarons has half a brain he will resign with us, prove himself and then make his move. He will disappear if he tries for a big club.
I hope this makes sense to you…..
Then again I don’t care if it makes sense to you! 😆

  15. AMF: I wasn;t talking about you. Now you are saying I don’t talk about football? 🙂 🙂 🙂 YCMIU. Troysta (10p) is right about you.

your on the verge of another blog meltdown.

take a few deep breaths matey & have a nice cuppa tea.

  17. Roy: no I am not. AMF never talks about football. Once, when he brought up Aarons. Have a look back at anything he says and it is always a niggle. Anything. Never about football except the one time about Aarons half an hour ago 🙂

  18. What are you talking about. I think you are saying for me to calm down. But I am not not calm. I just don’t understand AMF.

      (Quote)

  19. Eric, I think it was a bout of sniping that halted his input and fair play as it takes a little effort to knock up a half decent thread and is very draining when it isn’t appreciated. We all want a thriving blog with differing opinions and threads don’t we?

      (Quote)

  20. Kimtoon: But AMF always just has a dig at people now and never contributes anything. JUST HAVE A LOOK AT WHAT HE SAYS. Nothing about NUFC, ever.

  23. Roy, Yorkshire is too strong for me, you can strip paint with that brew. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like half the cow in it like, just don’t wanna be bitten back 😀 Could be worse though, have you tried Aldi’s? weak as the Toon team that stuff.

  25. We’ll I’ve called Aaron’s tap on because he’s in and out for over a year but if the kid can stay injury free and dough heed plays the lad in a attacking role he would show his worth, imo he has a good football brain and pace to burn and seems to have a eye for goal, just my thoughts on the lad I could be proved wrong in time

  26. Kim, I was going to say ‘how bout a big cup of discharge’ but that sounds so wrong in waaaay too many ways! 😆 😆

  27. AMF threatened to ban me the other day. 🙂 🙂 🙂 He doesn’t say a word about NUFC any more. Why would he ban me? I am am the chief Ryder antagonist 🙂

  28. Aussie the Victorians called it gleat I think, so maybe a big cup of gleat sounds more palatable 😉

Roy, agree, best move on now 😀

  29. Ice, The lad was very well thought of down here. Tipped for a big future and very level headed, just such a shame about the injuries like. Never had an injury issue until he made the move to us.
