How Norwich, Bournemouth, Villa and Sunderland’s results look from a Newcastle perspective

I’m not one for paying too much attention to how all the ‘teams around us’ are doing. My philosophy has always been, when your chances of achieving your goals (in footballing terms) rest in your own hands, why worry about what everyone around is doing?

Well, in an all-too-familiar season where maintaining our top-flight status is a major concern, sometimes it’s hard not to take a step back and see how our prospects look based on the performances of teams in a similarly perilous position.

In my very first article for NUFC Blog, my ‘philosophies’ have taken a back seat and I’ve compiled a short a run-down of how today’s results look from a Magpie perspective.

West Ham 1-0 Sunderland

The Hammers did just enough to squeeze past our local rivals Sunderland with a 1-0 win at the Boleyn ground today. The Mackems’ improvement on the pitch since ‘Big Sam’ took over has certainly been evident this season but by all accounts they were made to rue some good missed chances as well as a Jack Rodwell goal that was ruled out for offside.

With arguably winnable games against Crystal Palace and Southampton up next for Sunderland, here’s to hoping that their far from potent streak in front of goal continues.

Leicester City 1-0 Norwich

Leonardo Ulloa’s late goal lifted the roof off the King Power stadium and could prove to be crucial to our chances of our survival come the end of the season. We’ve now played one game less than the Canaries and just a point against next opponents Stoke City, will see us out the bottom three.

This defeat will no doubt have dented an already fragile Norwich psyche. Disappointing losses to Villa and Liverpool in 2016 all point to signs that Alex Neil’s men are in freefall with less than a third of the season left to go.

Stoke City 2-1 Aston Villa

Let’s face it, Villa were already down and deservedly so. Remi Garde’s men have been woeful this season but this defeat at the Britannia Stadium further cemented any chances the Midlands club may have of a late revival.

With Villa fans famously mocking our relegation plight back in the 2008/2009 season, it looks almost a certainty that the Midlands’ supposedly ‘biggest club’ will have to suffer the same fate this year.

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

It was a very decent point indeed for plucky Bournemouth at Vicarage Road this afternoon. Both sides missed very good chances according to the match report posted on BBC football and should the remarkable happen and we pick up three points at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday, we’ll be placed just two points behind Eddie Howe’s Cherries side.

In truth, of all the sides in and around this Catalina Mixer of relegation-threatened sides in the Premier League this season, it is AFC Bournemouth that I’d most like to see avoid the drop (assuming we do as well of course!).

It was unfathomable how we managed to pull-off our 1-0 smash and grab at the Vitality stadium earlier in the season (in truth, we deserved nothing out of that game) and for a club with such limited resources, it is refreshing to see them stick to their guns and play exciting, attacking football.

What did you make of today’s results then folks? Have your say in the comments below.

  2. Aussie, Prince Albert wrote to his Doctors about his troublesome Gleat/Gleet when suffering from VD apparently. Not Victoria’s hubby but her nephew, the one they thought was Jack the ripper.

  3. Ice, he’d be better getting some more game time with us than going to the gunners and sitting on the bench.. way too many young protégés have dropped off the radar chasing a dream of greatness too early.. The lad is nowhere near ready.. potential yeah… but he is too raw. .

  4. Kimtoon: I will continue with my Merson rants. He has a giant fat head.

The elephant seal next to him should shut up as well.

  5. ERIC I agree with your comments re Ryder,Carver,Merson neck has gone but because of the weight on his shoulders, drink, gambling, and smoking the funny gear, mind it annoys me all these pundits think there team they played for is great the rest all all poor, quite like D Murphy he doesn’t give a **** who he upsets even admits he wasn’t a great player unlike the others,DMills made a strange statement the other day,Vardy is not worth 20mil he’s having a great season but will go back to 8/10 goals a season in the future

  6. AMF@304 I would agree totally that Aaron’s should stay where he is,he still has a lot to prove, but imo it’s there if a decent coach can bring it out

  7. True mate…. he needs some serious minutes on the park and won’t get that at a top 4 club.. but a good coach like Wenger would be good for him..

there’s no shame in shopping at aldi mate – some of the stuff they sell knock’s spots off other supermarkets + it’s a lot cheaper.

i agree about the double d – not the t variety tho 😉

  9. Ice spot on ‘re Aldi nappies.

‘re: Aarons – he has not stayed fit for longer than 5 minute so far. He can cross and works hard so I’d like to see him stay another couple of years but it’s too early to tell if he will make it or not.

Good results over the weekend but we still need to register points to get out of drop zone so pressure is all still on us.

  10. Well it seems Aaron’s wants to move on as he has refused to sign a new contract maybe someone has had a word in his ear, mind I wouldn’t blame any player wanting to leave the shambles that’s going on at the toon just now

  11. So Remi Garde was offered the gig then & he turned it down.

At the time we were 9th, We had some very good players, Had deals for Gini, Mitro & Mbemba in the pipeline, A **** load of money left for the next couple of Windows & were prepared to move on Pardews “coaching” staff.

He ended up at Villa with all their problems; Charnley must be some negotiator…

  12. Ice, the lad wants to be a winger not a make shift LB who will end up being a scape goat. If he has the chance to work under a top coach and alongside top talent who’d blame him. The only downside is he might not get the first team footie on a regular basis.

  13. i would imagine the interview was going ok until charnley said – we’d like you to take a leaf out of pardew’s book & be our gobshite – at that point he probably just got up & left.

    – ok then let’s give steve a call –

the rest as they say is history.

  14. 80 applicants & we end up with this loser 🙁

i’ve said it before – the majority of those would have been season tickets holders just fcking around.

maybe he should stop taking those ugly pills

  16. Apparently the contract offer to Aarons was really poor with add ons for appearances and goals. Not surprised he didn’t sign.
Just hope he doesn’t become another Forster or that Kemen kid who now is good enough to play for Lyon – and beat PSG!
**** poor management at the Toon these days.

  17. Also – why no heading (NUFCblog) as a sure fire identifier at top? Like I say I do like the design – modern, airy. Are you still welcoming new articles from bloggers?

  23. Aarons has good potential for what we’ve seen so far. “Singled out as a new champion footballer” 😆 steady on Aussie…. 😳 why would we want to lose him, like anyone who looks decent, we’d rather keep him then lose him but I wont be crying about it.. 😉

    Sunderland v Palace 1 – 0
    Norwich City v Chelsea 1. 3
    Aston Villa v Everton 1-1
    Bournemouth v Saints 1.2
Leicester City v West Brom 2-0

  29. Ice – McClaren will not get the bullet even if we get humped 5. If we lost Bournemouth on the other hand… Reckon Jabba might even take it into his own hands.

Personally I believe Jabba is setting the club up to be sold. He’s fattened it up, has a big bumper TV deal round the corner and if Everton is worth £350m he will get £375-£400m for us and that a handsome profit indeed!

Sports Direct is under the pump at the moment, share price dropping off a cliff and is about to drop out of the FTSE 100. He may even take it back into private ownership. He will probably sell NUFC to pay for it…

Finally if you all remember about 18 months ago the club made a statement saying he wouldn’t be selling until ‘at least’ the end of the 2015/16 season…

    Are the stars aligning?

      (Quote)

  30. STUART hope your right about him selling up as the club will never move forward while its under his ownership,Imo SM should go he should never been manager, just shows how rotten the club is when the Villa manager chose them before us they talked long enough with him and still couldn’t sell their methods to him

      (Quote)

  31. Not liking the new lay out to be honest but as stated it is not the finished article.. The white looks clean and pure, which is more than be said for some of the posters on here! 😆 😆
