Rafa, trust and lessons learned.

Does Rafa's signing mean Ashley is singing a new Toon?

On the face of it we have now acquired the services of a top notch manager. Just a glance through his CV tells you what he’s capable of and likely to bring to the table. You have to give credit to the club in securing his services albeit rather late in the day.

In truth this should of been done last summer, rather than searching in the bargain bucket for a coach again. It’s a mystery why the club continually chased after Steve McClaren (asking him no less than three times to coach us) when other better options were out there.

But of course it’s actually pretty obvious why Newcastle courted McClaren really. Here was a man looking to rebuild his reputation in England and ultimately get back into top flight football via a Derby promotion. Sadly for Derby it didn’t come off and a great start to the season saw them fall well short and miss out on the promised land of the Premier League. At this point alarm bells should of gone off for the Newcastle hierarchy that this wasn’t the coach to guide us anywhere let alone Premier League safety. A good coach he may be (so all the ex-pro’s say) but not a manager. So after a sacking by Derby he finally said yes to Newcastle’s advances. Yet another desperate coach seeking some kind of redemption joins us, just as Pardew had previously.

Time and again that man in charge, Mike Ashley, believes he can do this football malarky on the cheap. Time and again his blueprint for the club comes back to bite him and still he never learns. So here he is paying off his latest mistake and his backroom staff but has he finally learned?

Our new manager (yes, manager not coach) is Rafa Benitez, and I think we are all still in shock that we’ve actually signed such a good manager. The big question though is, is this really a case of lessons being learned by Mr Ashley? Has he finally seen that for a good job you need a very good Manager who can manage on his own terms?
We have to assume that Benitez has been promised autonomy in most aspects of his job and that he has been assured of future funds being made available, else he likely wouldn’t of signed up no matter what the financial benefits on offer.

Given that all of that was promised, should we stay in the Premier League will we see these promises come to fruition? That’s the biggest question and worry for me. We have seen Rafa Benitez at logger heads with previous owners over funding for players previously, notably at Liverpool. If he isn’t permitted to bring in the players he wants this could cause real problems and and result in him walking away. If that scenario were to pan out will we see a return to the hired yes man type of coach?

It is very difficult to have any trust in an owner who has lost his way so many times in trying to get this ‘football thing’ right and as fans he can hardly blame us being a tad skeptical over his long term desires for the future of the club. In fairness he has dipped his hands in the clubs coffers and spent a huge amount by our standards this season. And now he has acquired a top coach to try and ensure our Premier League survival so we can hardly complain.

Yet, I don’t now about you but I’m still wary of his will to carry out his promises to Rafa Benitez and the long road to trust seems a long way off to me. Let’s hope that lessons have really been learned this time and we can go forward with real hope.

  1. And I dont give a s**t if Benitez failed at Madrid after all of 6 months in a job with somebody else’s squad. They sacked Carlo after he won them the Champion’s League ffs.

  2. Sham, there will be a lot of snide remarks from the likes of Scum fans and fat Sam but in the end he and the players just have to shove it back down their throats. Our destiny is in our own hands, Rafa for sure will be letting them know what has to be done, it’s over to the players now. If the fans get behind them even when mistakes are made, we’ll be ok.

  3. We can’t blame Schteve if we go down. He’s gone now and there are 10 games left. We also can’t blame Rafa . It’s not his squad and he is proven world class. We can however, blame Carr. If we go down with a world class manager then we know the players are gash – and that is down to poor vetting and judgement by Carr.

  4. Woo hoo hoo hoo!  😆
I can see my worst nightmare ever. We get relegated and we have to get Clarkie in!
I woud hate that to happen even to rub the ever wrong GashleyS nose in it. 😯
I laugh at Aussie. He never makes a prediction so he’s never right or wrong but jumps on others for making judgements.
Well done Aussie for being neither right or wrong but thinks heS right and never wrong.  😆

  5. Shamrock: we can blame Schteve as he was Carr’s choice. I didn’t even figure this out until this week that Carr had made a massive power grab. His player choices were above average for the money we paid but Shelvey, Elliot, Wignaldum and Perez are very good so we have a chance.

Jury is still out on MBemba, Townsend and Mitro, but I doubt Rafa would have come if he didn’t think we had some good players.

  6. I’ll blame McLaren he’s ***** and deluded.

Case is out on Mbemba? He’s quality considering his age

  7. How am I on a wind up? I’m just replying to Aussies and Gashleys wind up from the previous thread.
Keep up Psychsy. You are always a step behind. 😆

  8. Troysta: you have put your full support behind Pards, Carvs and Schteve so I don’t blame Gashley or AMF for winding you up. You are the Ryder of this blog mate.

  9. Gashley
    Dont forget Pearce. 😆
That’s how low we had stooped.
Thankfully, thankfully, Ashley recapped on my posts pre Pards and my demands for Benitez and then post Pards.
I thank Ashley for finally coming round to my way of thinking. 😉

  10. Troy.

You would of happily went along with Mikes plan of mediocrity and stuck with Pardew for 7 years and we couldn’t get any better ?

Clarky was your biggest shout ?

  11. There’s not a man in this world who could upset me now. I’ve got the man I’ve been demanding.
I thankyou Mikey for listening to my plan A. 😎

  12. Wow weakest comeback ever?

So can you now admit you were wrong in thinking our best option was Lee clark

  13. Well it’s nice to see you fall off your ladderc and straight down the manhole. At least we can’t see you blushing down there?

  14. Troysta: Did you put a bet on that we would get Rafa? Waited 5 years for the payout and were happy with Pards in the meantime.

  15. It’s the greatest show of pigeon chest puffing for decades this. 😆
    Gashley &his pigeon chest 😆
Wow! I’m cringing for you here. You know I was right from the beginning. Always wanted Rafa the gaffa .
The best you would come up with was an Aussie style answer. I just want somebody better than McLaren.
I will say I never expected Ashley to capitulate and realise my original plan was right.
    Respect to him like. 😉

  16. You were making fun of me for wanting good managers like Klinsmann, Di Mateo and, yes, even Pearson. Whilst your efforts were Clark and Pearce.

    YCMIU.

  17. The impression I get about Rafa is that he does not do prima donnas. His teams take 11 players organised and giving everything for him to see success. No player is bigger than the team or the club.
With the comments from Gerrard about him, and the comments he made about Benzema.

I think with Rafa we will finally get what we all want from our players – 100% effort & pride to play in that shirt – and if they don’t (and I’m thinking Colo, Sissoko for example) then they will be dropped & ultimately moved on regardless of profit or loss.

  18. Sharpy agree, don’t think he suffers fools gladly one bit. Proper wake up call for some of the players and god help any feigning injury.

  19. Troysta: Champions league winning Manager gets sacked and Troy says we should hire him 5 years ago. Great call that one . The sky is blue and the moon is round is what Troy will be saying next. He told us so.

If you have time you should watch this on our new manager. It’s on about 45mins, but I found it interesting.
We know him as the trophy winner with the big clubs, but I think his footballing principles come from his earlier years coaching & managing in the lower league in Spain.
He comes across as a really honest, straightforward bloke – a breath of fresh air against the last 3 gobshites we’ve had.

I might start planting the seed now. Pep. 😉

  22. A bit to late for commenting on the press conference, but, as he did on the nufctv interview Rafa came across as genuine and genuinely confident in his task, his ability to achieve that task and, perhaps more importantly, his belief that he has seen enough in the squad to achieve that task.
I’m struggling to remember listening to a NUFC manager so much as fart without cringing with embarrasment.
I think I almost feel relieved more than anything. Like the moment at the end of a really long hike when you finally take that heavy rucksack off……..

      (Quote)

  23. YY: I watched that interview as well and Rafa came across very well.

    But, back to Troy… 🙂

  24. Why the hell didn’t the club get Rafa in when we had that 18 day break what a big difference it would have had its always panic time at the club through bad leadership from the top.
On another point Big Al says Rafa would have asked for for control of transfers what he asks for and what he gets is two different things,he knows jabba of old

  25. Troy: why do you think you are winding people up when we all know what you are about?

  26. I see we got yet another out of work manager who got fired fromhislast job. He,s hardly workrd in the last few years. 6 months here, 6 months there. Another failure desperate for work. yawn

  27. Good on Everton!!. I’m really enjoying seeing the might fall this season.

To get rid of Lukaku and bring Costa in looks like a master stroke now doesn’t it?!.
These big clubs want to buy titles & just coz Luk wasn’t ready they sell him for what they saw as good money at the time. Mental!! – he’d cost them £50m now.

  28. Yeh, such a special idea to suggest to get a Champions League manager 5 years ago and crow about it in 2016. In the meantime loving Pards, Ugly John and Schteve. YCMIU.

Where is Blackley and Brownley to tell Troy he is making a fool of himself?

    Lee Clark.

    Stuart Pearce.

  29. Troysta: you are funny man. Do you also respect the turd you just flushed down the loo?

  31. This Rafa appointment is on par with SBR.
Not as exciting as KK but there was something that got the blood flowing and adrenalin going when SBR arrived.
It was similar circumstances as well. We were in the doldrums when he arrived and within a few years he took us to heady heights.
I only hope Rafa can ignite the flame.
Onr thing is for certain, he’s united the fans and SJP will be jumping on his home debut.
Can’t wait. I’m back. No more boycotts.

Let troy rest now, we all know how clueless he looks

Your bordering on bullying now. Leave him alone please

  33. Sharpy – Rafa is huge on ‘the team’ and doesn’t do prima donnas. He was adamant in Madrid that he would never say Ronaldo was the best player. He consistently refused to say it. Got him respect from other players but reports suggest he didn’t get on with Ronaldo after that. What a vain toss pot!

    But just what we need.

      (Quote)

  34. Prem: I know that was tongue in cheek but anyway here is some information? He won the Champions League and La Liga and finished 2nd in the PL.

He was sacked by Real Madrid. EVERYBODY gets sacked by Real Madrid. Ancelotti was sacked by Madrid FFS and Pelegrini 🙂

  35. I said we would probably end up with Pearson. I named quite a few others I would prefer (Klinsmann) so get it right.

Glad you are going to watch the games again though Troy. I know how much you support the team really.

    Ryder out 🙂

  36. Gash: how is it possible to bully Troysta? I have said it before but he has skin as thick as 12 elephants and 10 rhinos. And a head as thick as well.

  37. Stuart: I have watched quite a few Madrid games and Ronaldo only grudgingly congratulated Bale when Bale scored. Ronaldo is a big kid.

  39. Woo hoo hoo hoo. Psychs says he suggested Pearson but wanted Klinsmann.

I suggested Clarky and Pearson for 10 games but wanted Rafa.
I got my first choice and Psychs tries to wind me tup tup. 😆

  40. You have to get a bit of credit for sticking to your guns and saying McClaren should be sacked after 8 games. I wanted him to be given a bit more time but you were right on that. Not on Pards or Ugly John though 🙂

      (Quote)

  41. I’ve never once said that i said we had a chance of getting Rafa. Stop making things up Psychs. 😉
I never ever thought he would appoint him. I always wanted him though. I’ve said it for over 5 yrs. 😉
He’s finally listened to me. I can’t give Ashley anymore respect than he’s shown me. 😉

      (Quote)

  42. I was right about Pards. He did a decent job.
I have Carver 10 games and then decided he was out of his depth. I never once rated him during those 10 games. 😉
But I’ve finally got my man. 😉
