Rafa, relegation and resurrection

Now I hate to mention the R word, or several in the case of this header, but lets face it, we can’t ignore our perilous position. It would seem we have a mountain to climb to secure our premier league status with just 8 games remaining.

Rafa Benitez has really taken on the task with vigour, getting all the negativity away from the first team squad, including stopping the under 21 players that were hanging around the first team. Even Peter Beardsley has been ousted and the likes of Cheick Tiote and any other negative or moody first teamers will also be told to stay away from Benitez chosen group of first teamers.

I think it’s safe to say he doesn’t suffer fools gladly and you will quickly become persona non grata if you don’t pull your weight or fight for the cause. So it would seem he is doing his best to establish a sense of brotherhood and togetherness amongst the first team, encouraging them to eat and socialise together. After all, this is how they operate at Leicester city and it seems to work for them. The only problem with this approach is it mustn’t be forced as I can’t see it working. At Leicester they are genuine friends who socialise not just with each other but with each others families too.

What ever changes and ploys Benitez chooses to adopt, he has little time to make them effective – hampered somewhat by the overall quality within the squad. We have seen some good progress with the defence. It was immediately noticed in the Leicester City game where we looked calm and passed it out from the back well. However, in the Derby match the same old lack luster, slow play seemed to rear it’s ugly head again and the first half wasn’t pretty at all. Second half we seemed to up our workrate, helped in part by Sunderland sitting back and a Rafa rollicking no doubt.

But.. does Benitez really have time to save us? Are we so wrapped up in the arrival of such a good coach that we are in danger of forgetting part of the reason we are where we are, namely those players? Do we have a squad who are truly able to step up, helped along by good solid tactical knowledge? After all he can only pass on his vision and knowledge to them, in the end it’s up to them to implement that vision on the game.

If the unthinkable were to happen and we are relegated, we then have the question of whether Rafa Benitez stays or goes. Will he fancy a rebuilding job given we are likely to lose several good players and some not so good ones hopefully too? Or will the board opt to let him go and bring in a coach along the lines of Nigel Pearson, who some might argue would be possibly better equipped for that type of fight?

There is also the question of whether or not the team we deployed in that division would have the ability to bounce back like our previous team managed in that league. If I’m honest I cannot see a Toon ressurection like before. There are no Barton’s, Carroll’s and Nolan’s this time – or in the near future it would seem, not with Mike Ashley telling us the financial cupboard is bare. If this is true then we can’t sign good battling footballers because they cost a pretty penny – even in that league.

So it would seem we have to pray and if you aren’t religious, plain hope that we survive and Benitez is allowed to build something really special with Newcastle…… After all – haven’t we waited long enough?

  1. Good read Kim. I’ve got a gut feeling MA feels a defeated man and is going to let us rot if we drop down.

  2. KIM good read mate and about everyone’s thoughts, always enjoy your threads.
SHAM I have the same thoughts as you plus jabba can be a evil git

  3. Good read Kim , Sham i dont think the fat **** will let us rot . I think with his comments this week he is trying too get out of the club . A summer sale is on the cards and i think he will take a low price and take the loss on his investment too be rid of us . He has bigger problems with his real business Sports Direct too stick with us much longer .

  4. I just fear Rafa is trying to change too much. He is acting like he has the job long term yet he is gonna **** off when we go down. That is just going to leave us with a structure destroyed with a playing squad that will be destroyed.

I sometimes fear we may have been better getting Redknapp in and letting him just make everyone feel like they’ve got huge swinging dicks and then try for Rafa in the summer.

It is no good trying to change the youth team set up when you then disappear 4 months later and we go down with no system in place at all for anyone.

      (Quote)

  5. Cheers lads, I was wondering if he secretly wants to flog us to raise the money to try and buy out the Sports Direct share holders. I can’t see how he’s getting any joy from owning us right now.

  6. FJ: the structure of the club as it stands is useless. We have an accountant as MD, a failed Northhampton manager as de facto DoF and a gladhander as the other member of the board. Ashley is as hands off as he could be. The U21s arrange a friendly with scum and get beat 6 nowt. We appoint a failed Derby Manager FFS.

Whatever Rafa can do to shake that lot up cannot be bad. What we have is bad and even if he changes things for only 4 months it cannot get any worse. Sack Beardsley, his record is worse that Ugly John’s and Schteve’s.

  7. Good read Kimtoon. I see you are fighting the good fight against the international break and trying to keep things going 🙂

On the bonding issue. I think they should go down to Tynemouth and have a 5-a-side. Relieve the pressure and see what NUFC means to the locals. I don’t understand why they only do that sort of thing in pre-season. It will show some of the players what the club means to the area and take them away from their Bentleys and mansions and see real life for a change.

      (Quote)

  8. Actually, we didn’t just appoint a failed Derby manager we hired Ugly John to keep his seat warm. Whatever changes Rafa makes will be welcomed wholeheartedly by me, even if he is only at NUFC for 4 months.

I also believe it was Rafa who approached us because our lot would not have the gumption to call him. A final last throw of the dice by our MD who has finally realised that wearing a “In Carr we Trust” t-shirt will get us relegated. At least with Rafa we have a chance.

  9. Eric, I have a funny feeling that Rafa may hang around even if we drop. Fancy he could see us as a long term project. Of course much depends on Ashley and if he’ll give him the means to get us back up, that is my main concern going forward.

      (Quote)

  10. I didn’t believe in anything Schteve was doing. I did my best to stay neutral because I had already trashed Pardew and Carver so much. He went along with Carrs’s power grab and was so bloody wishy washy changing his tune from week to week and abdicating responsibility to a fckn motivational speaker. No wonder the players were not inspired.

We now have a Manager, yes a Manager, not head coach, who knows what he is doing and has the silverware to prove it. He was sacked by Real Madrid when they were 2nd in La Liga on Jan 4th FFS. What more do people want????

      (Quote)

  11. Kimtoon: when we were last relegated a lot of the pundits thought we would do a Leeds and we were promoted with 100 points. We have the basis of a good squad so I have no fear if we get relegated whether Rafa stays or goes.

  12. Eric, we were brilliant in the fizzy pop but we had players like Barton and Nolan and ofcourse Carrolls goals. We had a good spine to that team, I don’t see that now sadly.

  13. I was chatting to my brother about if we go down and he is certain we’ll come back up. He said they are a premier league team, end of, they won’t stay down.

      (Quote)

  14. Kimtoon: we have Elliot, Shelvey and Townsend which is a start. Also, Armstrong could be the new Carroll. If the rest of them think it is greener in pastures new then they only have to look at the career thrajectories of Cabaye, Ba and Debuchy and they might want to stick around.

I just realised it is Good Friday and now understand your headline.

  15. Kim another good read Lass and a lot of good points covered, for me the players really did need a good boot up the ***.
As for the Derby game I just think for the 1st half that the actual occasion got to some of our players, so I would expect the better defence will be back in operation against Norwich.
As for Rafa if the worst was to happen , well I just hope that he would see us as a job that he had to stick with just to prove that he is capable of that, as well as coming in to top of the league teams.
As for changing the youth team / under 21’s etc I really can’t see why he would bother worrying about that unless he really does see us as his long term ambition.

  18. My view is that Rafa offers us our best chance of staying up. If he leaves after 4 months then we have to reset. At least we gave it a go. What???!!! Would people prefer we appoint another Carver and go silently into the night?

      (Quote)

  19. I misquoted. I meant – do not go gentle into that good night. If we go down we will at least go down fighting.

  20. Eric as for Colback I said before the game that we would have to do with out him for the next 2 games , as for me it was obvious he would be well up for the game, and that the Maces would try to wind him up to get him sent off, while they didn’t get him sent off they still managed to wind him up.
Which for me was and is only natural, so I wouldn’t blame him for it.

      (Quote)

  21. Big D: I think Colback is a decent player and does a lot of the dirty work that will free up Shelvey when we are able to play more expansive football in The Championship 🙂

I said Church, but it was more like a big shed with a cross on top.

    Happy Easter 🙂

  26. Eric,

I hope you are right but my fear is everything is ripped up then we go down and Rafa disappears and then any new manager we try to get sees that we’ve literally got no fucking system in place, in any respect, for anything and then says “no thanks”.

We might literally be stuck with Peter “can’t buy a win in reserves” Beardsley managing us next season as he is the only mug willing to take on a club that has no structure at all.

      (Quote)

  27. FJ: I was just saying that it would not be that much worse than Ugly John and Schteve left us with. From top to bottom we could not buy a win.

I think we would do a Leeds or Portsmouth if they put Beardsley in charge. Great footballer but not the sharpest knife in the drawer, obviously and basically too. As St. Peter would say.

  28. good read Kim

I reckon Mike is trying to offload us. hes having a bad time and could do with some of his money back. finding a buyer is the difficult part.

If we go down (I’m 90% certain we will) Rafa will not hang around here. He’s just been to Real Madrid 😯 hes not going to be convinced travelling to Burton Albion will do his career good 😆

if we go down we have enough players to sell to make our squad strong enough for a championship push. we also have a few that will hang around
Elliot, Lascelles, Taylor, Colback, Shelvey, Townsend, Perez, Mitrovic, Anita, Arma and a few reserves / youth players

      (Quote)

  29. When we go down we will stay down because the bumbling imbeciles who allowed this all to happen will be left to try and sort out the problem.
We have so many poor players in a lop-sided squad, it’ll take us at least 2 seasons to come back up. The main reason being that there will be at least 6 teams at the top end of the Championship who are more hungry and better balanced than our shower.
Look how we have been battered by “lesser” clubs over the years, Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, Bournemouth twice… the list goes on. Too many poor players, the light will go on for Rafa too.

      (Quote)

  30. MM: I am absolutely certain Carr will be gone in the summer whether Rafa stays or goes. The only reason he has not been sacked already is that they don’t want to rock the boat. Same with Beardsley.

I am not so sure about Charnley, but his duties and power have already being curtailed first by Carr’s power grab and now by giving up control to a MANAGER and thereby reversing the structure that he, at Carr’s behest, had put in place. Charnley is desperately trying to save himself and Carr, Moncur and Beardsley will get what they deserve – THE SACK.

      (Quote)

  31. It is so strange that the local press are now seeing things so clearly and writing articles that NUFC have needed the changes that are being made for years. That the structure was all wrong from top to bottom and Carver and McClaren were weak and bad appointments. Talk about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. They toe the company/party line and then suddenly change their tune. I know they have to keep in with the powers that be at SJP but did they have to be so craven about it? They never questioned anything until it was obvious the “head coach” would be fired.

The whole lot of them should have journalist or chief sports writer removed from their business cards and replaced with “chief cheerleader and suckup”.

      (Quote)

  32. Here is an article from Mark Douglass saying the changes Shearer wanted to make were correct. That was 7 years ago and how many times have Douglass and his Chief Sports Writer brought this up during these 7 years? Talk about revisionist history, when the changes are going to be made they act like they were for it all along, when in fact, they never bloody mentioned it in 7 years.

I hope you’re right, Charnley must have finally shown to Ashley what the rest of us have known for an epoch; the man is grossly out of his depth.
However, I worry that the fat man has truly lost the will to give a toss. His recent body language and words compared to ‘that’ interview nearly a year ago speak s volumes.
Whether he cares little enough to sell up, or simply leave Lee chugging along is another matter, and I’m not convinced survival or relegation will alter that either way.
Every appendage is crossed for survival, Rafa commitment long term and the sale of the club to someone with a head on their shoulders and not a turnip.

  34. With the FFP, the new TV money deal and the supposed ‘sound financial footing’ of the club, meaning it effectively runs itself, is there even any real need anymore for a billionaire to buy the club, as was the case not so many moons ago?
Whatever happened to that Geordie led consortium that was sniffing around a few years back?

  35. Let’s do a 7 things I have learnt that The Chron are so very fond of now:

    1. That The Chron never question anything at NUFC until it is clear the “head coach” will be sacked.

    2. That The Chronicle never questioned why we get so many injuries?

    3. That The Chronicle never wondered why even our U21 and youth teams always lost and never questioned what Beardsley was doing there.

    4. That The Chronicle gave Graham Carr a free ride and never questioned how and why he had become de facto Director of Football.

    5. That The Chronicle were very fond of using the term “not fit for purpose” when referring to players and “head coaches” who had left but never used that term when questioning whether they were “fit for purpose” as journalists.

    6. That Lee Ryder has never written an investigative or insightful article in his life and has the writing skills of an 8 year old. If I didn’t know any better I would think he is just there for the free trips to Spain and America and has his intern write his columns.

    7. That Rafa was virtually signed before The Chron had any incline he was on his way. Finger on the pulse of what is happening at NUFC, eh boys?

      (Quote)

  36. Yew Yew: my Stuart-O-Meter on us staying up is currently at 50%. These local consortiums almost never materialise for any club. John Hall was an exception but some of his stuff was a bit smoke and mirrors.

  37. Good article, Kim.

Before Rafa arrived I really couldn’t give a **** whether we were relegated or not, but now he’s here and I see what could become us if we stay up then I’ll be gutted if we go down.

He’s certainly the right guy to build the club but we need to be in the PL and he needs to be given the keys to the castle. I would be very surprised if we didn’t win something under him.

      (Quote)

  38. All the writers, journalists and ex-players are very fond of the term “football is a results business”. If so, then why are our academy coaches still employed? I haven’t really mentioned this as I am much more interested in the first team but Rafa’s visit to the academy and sending the kids off to detention has brought this aspect of the club into focus for me. I occasionally would see a report on NUFC.com and brush it off as, oh, we lost again, this time only 5 nil to Hartlepool. It does show that when there is no accountability you end up with *****. Who does Beardsley even report to??? Not the head coach, not Carr. Charnley?

  39. Hey Stuart: I hope you don’t think I am taking the **** out of you with my Stuart-O-Meter. I am not, I sort of want to keep track of my own highs and lows as we go forward.

  42. Apparently some of his backroom staff are suggesting Rafa will stay even if we go down. He definitely wouldn’t be messing with everything if it was just for 8 games.

Although the last time we did get a decent manager, KK (apparently) mike wanted to offload us.
He has said some strange contrasting things lately considering we’ve got a winner of a manager.

he might just like building bridges to burn them down again..

      (Quote)

  45. Rafa wont stay in the Championship.. it could ruin him. he may be tempted if we pay him loads which I doubt we’d do as we’re skint 😈

      (Quote)

  46. Now I will move on to John Gibson. I quite like his rants now that he doesn’t give a **** what anybody at NUFC or The Chron say to him. However, all his articles are in the same style and he passed this on to my mate Ryder.

What I find funny is the picture that they put up next to his articles. I think it is from the ’80’s but Wor John had kept parts of his ’70’s hair do with the long sides. When you see him in The Chron videos it is obvious they have not changed the picture in 20 years as the ravages of time, booze and tobacco make him look like an old boot.

      (Quote)

  47. Enjoyed your article, Kim. While it is possible mathematically to stay up I will continue to hope. I think with Rafa we are capable of picking up at least one shock result in our favour. Here’s hoping.

He’s had a poor season, there’s no doubting that. But I see effort from him, with a lack of end product – well the same could be said about Mitrovic or a few others.

If Rafa can get the best out of Sissoko, then we have a very good player there, and with Gini, Shelvey and Townsend – that should be a midfield that could compete with the best teams in the league.

He comes to us not fit? What kind of clown does that? And why hasn’t he gotten fit over the last 7 or 8 weeks with us? And Sissoko. He can be so good in the middle third but it usually comes to nothing. And Wijnaldum seems to have lost his way as well. Possibly De Jong can get the midfield going with Shelvey. It has to happen over the next few weeks.

    1. There is no rule stating that a marketed strip must be worn. Therefore don’t be surprised if some kits are never used.
    2. 3rd kits may only be worn if the Premier League gets notice in writing at least 7 days prior to the match in question.
    3. There is no definition of a kit clash. Its up to the kit managers and then match officials, hence the inconsistency.
    4. Surprisingly, there is already a rule in place saying change kits can only be worn in away matches and when there is a clash. Only the match officials can give permission for a change.
    5. A change kit may only be worn a maximum of EIGHT times during one season unless necessity suggests otherwise. This decision lies with match officials.
    6. A home and away kit must be presented to the Premier League at least 4 weeks before the season starts, hence why unexpected kit clashes fail to revive previous seasons kits.

I’ve cut and pasted the relevant text taken from the Premier League 08-09 Handbook – available for free download from their website:
