We’re just minutes away from kick-off in the Magpies’ crucial match-up with fellow relegation strugglers Norwich City.

United boss Rafa Benitez has named his starting eleven and looks like this:

After recovering from his knock during the Tyne and Wear Derby almost two weeks ago, Dutchman Daryl Janmaat returns to the starting eleven in his familiar right back position.

Further up the field, striker Pappis Cisse starts a game for the first time since the 19th of December 2015.

  49. Teetering on the brink now. Two of the four games I thought we could win have been played and we took 1 point. It’s very unlikely we can stay up. This has been brewing all season. Many of us called for McLaren’s head last fall. If we had done it then I think we could have recovered.

  51. We’re quite simply a failed club under Ashley. Nine seasons of pure hell. He hasn’t learned a thing. We barely escaped last season but he kept the same fools in charge. We should have sacked Charnley and Carr at the very least. With decent executives in we would never have been in this position given the money we had to spend (80 M). It’s quite literally impossible to believe that any football club could screw things up this badly given that type of money.

  52. G2 Mike Ashley is the soul reason why Newcastle are so **** today. Dennis Wise knew more about talented footballer’s than Kevin Keegan, Well that’s what Mike thinks. Wise scouted talented players on youtube and we ended up getting relegated then. Now we have Carr and his crapy agency buying players from abroad that most team’s dont even want. He also choose McClaren and Thauvin, Riviere, a collapsed lung De Jong. He also totally ignored the fact we needed more defenders and bought midfielder’s instead. Ashley is the bigger idiot, hurry up and sale the club.

  55. It’s been said a thousand times on here and on every other blog Terry. People begging Ashley to hire decent people to run the club. He either can’t admit he can’t run a club properly or he just doesn’t care. I believe he does care because of the money involved, but he just couldn’t overcome his own incompetence. I hate to think what relegation will be like this time around. We won’t have the type of players to bring us straight back up this time. It will be a disaster.

  57. Sack the entire executive as soon as the season ends. Including the board. Bring in a hard working manager with motivation and desire. For me it would be Karanka but I’m sure there are several other excellent possibilities. I don’t think for a minute Benitez will stay on as it could destroy his career wit the type of ownership we have.

  60. Munich Mag we didn’t lose because of Darlow, we lost because our defence is ****. Darlow made a save with his left foot that Given would have been proud of. We also had no luck to lose a point. We are down now though, no doubt about it, draw and we would have had a slim chance, not now. If Sunderland go down with Allardyce, I can see them doing better than us also, we are not done suffering yet. Storm clouds on the horizon. We will lose players like Perez for peanuts also. I predict we will be around the playoff and after a year or two Ashley will give up and sell. Lets see how committed and ‘married’ to the club after a few years of being in the shadows, leaking millions of pounds for very little advertising. Will Ashley sack Charnley and Carr after today? They have proven themselves to be incompetent and incapable of carrying out his instructions.

  65. It’s going to be hard from here. I’m not in the least bit confident that this bunch of players can get four wins between now and the end of the season.

    All credit to them for a fine fightback, but they’re just not good enough to push on and they just aren’t tough enough.

    The good thing to come out of the last week has been an announcement that the Championship will be on telly next year. At least I can still watch the lads. Through thick and thin … better or worse … and all that.

    When I looked at the teamsheet I wondered about Taylor, Tiote and Cisse and those fears proved well founded. I hope Rafa has learned a lesson there.

  67. If Rafa is going to experiment then we should play Aarons and Saivet. Drop Tiote and Cisse. Bring back Lascelles for Taylor and start Mitro. See if we can fit in de Jong?

    If we are to go down then don’t play the players that don’t want to be at NUFC (Cisse and Tiote). Cancel Taylor’s contract now.

  71. Stuart: as I said earlier, you are right about the 4 wins. I am a bit surprised that Icedog and Shamrock have given up but I hope that was just an overreaction. We have all seen a lot worse than this and I am keeping my fingers crossed still.

    Clarky will not even get hired by Charnley if he keeps up his current form. Of course, Troysta will say there were mitigating circumstances, like the last 3 jobs Clark had 🙂 YCMIU.

    Wijnaldum has been absolutely *****. Shelvey is exactly what i thought when we signed him. 1 good game every few weeks.

    Cisse didnt play poorly but why drop Mitro. play the two of them. drop Gini and sissoko.

    We’ve been saying for 2 seasons we need more defenders and strikers. Instead mike hands us fake bids of 24mil to keep some happy. the bloke will never change.

    He’s never cared since taking over us and only regrets not making loads of money.

    I use to care a lot about the Toon but its fading fast.
    Why should I give a flying fook when the owner obviously doesnt.

    We’ll go down, Rafa will leave and hopefully Mike will gets so much flak he thinks about selling. only then will i start hoping again 😈

  73. I’d just go for it now. Play 4-4-2 and just go for the throat of the teams we play. We know we can’t defend so why not just have a go. I would certainly look at dropping Gini, he’s been **** poor for a while now.

  74. I think Shelvey is a good player but I think Rafa should tell him to limit his Hollywood passes to 2 or 3 a game. They are great when they come off but it is a very low % way to play.

  75. And with Shelvey it is the press and the fans getting it into his head that he should be the “quarterback” of the team. He then gets even bigger ideas and tries for the “home run” all the fckin time. Just like Tiote when the fans scream “shooooot” because he scored one long range thunderbolt against Arsenal 5 years ago. They should yell “Paaaassss” at Tiote.
