What Benitez does better than McClaren according to Dummett

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s crucial match-up with Crystal Palace, Paul Dummett has spoken to the press about his new manager Rafa Benitez and what the Spaniard offers compared with his predecessor Steve McClaren.

Speaking to the Chronicle, the defender praised the ex-Real Madrid boss in how he was turning the squad into ‘better players’.

More specifically he has praised Benitez for the work he has done with the Newcastle back four.

With the Magpies conceding the second highest number of goals in the league this season (64 – only Villa have conceded more), it was imperative that a defence-minded coach in the mould of Rafa was brought into the club. After a clean sheet against Swansea and what should have been a clean sheet against Manchester City this month, there’s evidence to suggest that what’s being taught on the training ground is actually having a positive effect on match days.

“For me personally he talks about the positioning with each player and he works with the back four a lot.

“He tells us to be together and be more compact. Any manager has different opinions and growing up as players it can only help you learn from them. It will help me get better as a player too.”

  1. Well my daughters bday party kicks off at 15:00 today so probably wont get to watch the game. Fingers crossed today. These really are 3 cup finals and we need Stoke and Arsenal to step up.

  2. Arsene Wenger is most definitely rattled by the pressure on him. This week he has blamed the fans and said the banks insisyed he stayed when they built the new stadium. He has highlighted Arsenals home losses to weaker teams as the teason why they have lost the title. I would not be suprised if Norwich manage to get something against them. They are not in the best place at the moment. There are going to be Gunners fan protests in the stadium too.

  3. Im gona call a narrow Toon win and draws for Sunderland and Norwich today, which is good enough to put me at 50\50 on the Stu-o-meter.

  5. Kim – sorry I went missing yesterday, Lew sounds in a bad way, hope he’s a bit better today. All that snot and **** lying on his chest can’t be good & I bet he’s having rough nights as well. Chin up missus & hopefully the boys can cheer you up a bit this afternoon 😉

Ice – why stop there mate, there’s a good 3 or 4 I could think of who could follow those boys out the door.

Thinking back to Rafas time at Lpool, I seem to remember a big turn around of playing staff. He likes to get rid & bring new faces in. There could be a few on the move in the summer if Rafa stays on.

  7. Not just told they can leave but contracts paid up and shown the door! Now for Saylor and co to go.I reckon Rafa is staying regardless of whether we drop or not.

  8. Hope so Sham. Right – heading off into town for what seems like the biggest game in decades. Glad I’ve got a ticket as I get much calmer about things when I’m actually in the ground. HTL!

  9. Could be right, Sham. Glad you’re feeling a little more positive. Come on in, the waters lovely! 😎

  10. Stu I still think we have a high chance of relegation. But it wont bother me if Rafa stays.

  11. Can’t see Sunderland blowing it to be honest, and all the Rafa euphoria will be for nothing. All we can do is pick up 9 points and hope to hell …

Looking forward to being slagged off and forced to eat my own words when we survive though !!

  12. ive called the results wrong for the last few games so im going for a 1-1 draw with Palace and Sunderland to win 1-0

  13. Feeling nervous now, just want this crappy season over with tbh. If we can just stay up I think we’ll see a far better team under Rafa, but it’s a big if. Lew had a better night, still rough though, just need to see some light at the end of the tunnel for Lew and the Toon. Sending positive thoughts to the Toon players and imagining pins in the players at Scum and Norwich 😈

  14. its 50/50 whether we stay up or not. each game as they come. If we beat Palace and Sunderland fail to win, psychologically we’re in the driving seat.
both of todays games are obviously crucial for both teams. They’re winnable..

    twitchy-**** time!

  16. so Obertan and Marv have apparently left. good riddance.

Lets learn from our mistakes and change how we purchase..

Cheap as chips can cause long term problems… Marveaux made just 56 appearances for Newcastle in five years 😯

  17. Simon, I do hope so mate, I really do. My ex has come to Bristol to help me with Lews transfers as he’s not being too helpful at the mo (understandable ), at thirteen and a half stone he’s a big lad to try and lift. Gonna try and get a portable hoist off the OT who is visiting on Tuesday, just so I have something to help on the times he refuses to help me move him like. We been advertising for help for ages but it seems no one wants the job 🙁 and they say there’s no work around 😕

  18. Gashley, not one bit surprised they are gone, was coming a long time, Marv had the odd good game but injured far too much. There’s a fair few more need shipping out too.

  19. Kim, that’s where the system is wrong, need proper commissioners (what I do for NHS) to find people to come out an help for this sort of thing, too many people sit back and some of the ones dont really know what to do and leave it all to family. I just hope your ex does manage to help you. Just want you to take a little time out later on today to look after yourself. Also want you and Lew celebrating the results all going our way tonight

  22. I don’t get why everyone thinks Norwich and Sunderland will turn around the form of the whole season and suddenly start picking up a ton of points. It is highly unlikely that we will as well but at least we have a catalyst. Don’t give me the rot of Fat Sam being used to a relegation battle because he is not. His teams have usually been functional and not in much danger but bloody awful to watch.

  23. Marko Arnautovic is a doubt for Stoke, big miss for them…Xherdan Shaqiri (hamstring) has also returned to training while Erik Pieters returns from suspension

Sunderland have lost just one of their last nine Premier League meetings with Stoke
Stoke have won five and lost just one of their last eight league meetings with Sunderland at home.

you said it right there yourself Eric. Nobody is saying Sunderland will go on a fantastic run, just as you can’t expect us to either. Its very close..too close & yeah, we have Rafa which may help 😯

  26. But why are people suspecting we will turn around and actually win? There is no basis for such belief.

We’ve played better? So have Sunderland but they havenynwon yet that logic isn’t used on us because….. no reason. It is fanciful.

There is no reason to think we will win today if you dismiss the idea Sunderland can win too.

Fellow defender Kevin Mbabu is fit after a thigh injury – Zaha may be a doubt for Palace

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse has scored in all three of his Premier League matches against Crystal Palace.

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last three games (won one, drawn two) and they haven’t gone four games unbeaten in the Premier League since Alan Pardew’s tenure (six games in Oct-Nov 2014).
Crystal Palace have won only once in Premier League in 2016, the fewest so far. 😯
Palace have won a joint-league low tally of eight points in the Premier League in 2016, alongside already relegated Aston Villa.

The Eagles haven’t won a Premier League away game since December 19, 2015 – they have picked up just five points in nine road trips since.

Simon, Lew has just got health payments to hire pa’s to help him and me but we can’t get anyone in. Have advertised at nursing colleges, uni’s, agencies, allsorts of places but no takers, it’s unbelievable . It’s not full time and mostly evenings for 2 hours and possibly half hour in mornings but we just can’t get the help. 🙁

Don’t know what to make of that, they will either continue to lose or be due a win 🙄

This is not a given win by any means… All the scum need to do is match our results and we are down… I hope we can pull it off somehow but it’s not a given by a long shot.
