What Benitez does better than McClaren according to Dummett

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s crucial match-up with Crystal Palace, Paul Dummett has spoken to the press about his new manager Rafa Benitez and what the Spaniard offers compared with his predecessor Steve McClaren.

Speaking to the Chronicle, the defender praised the ex-Real Madrid boss in how he was turning the squad into ‘better players’.

More specifically he has praised Benitez for the work he has done with the Newcastle back four.

With the Magpies conceding the second highest number of goals in the league this season (64 – only Villa have conceded more), it was imperative that a defence-minded coach in the mould of Rafa was brought into the club. After a clean sheet against Swansea and what should have been a clean sheet against Manchester City this month, there’s evidence to suggest that what’s being taught on the training ground is actually having a positive effect on match days.

“For me personally he talks about the positioning with each player and he works with the back four a lot.

“He tells us to be together and be more compact. Any manager has different opinions and growing up as players it can only help you learn from them. It will help me get better as a player too.”

  1. Get in! Right on cue! I’m just about to set off and when I land we will be out of the bottom 3!

  2. from the BBC website
What a goal! What a hit! Absolutely sensational technique as Andros Townsend arcs a left-footed free-kick up and over the wall, away from Wayne Hennessey and into the far corner!

  3. Has to be one of Cabaye’s poorest ever penalties. I’d say it was intentional if we hadn’t clearly pissed him off with boos all day 😆

Win this & As long as we keep winning it’s in our own hands

If Sunderland draw their game in hand, they go above us.

It is out of our hands.

  6. Thank f*ck for that… What a goal by Townsend and a great pen save too.. Townsend was everywhere today. My MoM today just shading it from Darlow. The scum are a lucky bunch of f*ckers though aren’t they? Now need arsenal to turn up against Norwich. Trouble is these games in hand that the scum and Norwich have… It’s still not in our own hands, but I’m enjoying the moment.

  7. Tight game today. Im sure Cabaye did that on purpose! Great chance we have given ourselves. Will pit us at 50% on the Stu-o-meter if Norwich fail to win.

  9. I will be 45% if Norwich draw, 50% if they lose and 30% if they win. Arsenal poor at the minute. No shots on target to Norwich’s 3.

  10. Kim when Dean blew the whistle thought that’s for you and Lew. I’m now 80% on the Stu meter, 3 more next week and I think all done

  11. I knew Stoke would let us down today – wankers!!!.

But what at game at SJP. Not as comfortable as I would have liked, and very poor 1st half. I think that was down to going with Gini over Perez though personally. Perez has been proving better support to Cisse in recent games & I think playing Gini left Cisse alone up there.
But we came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half and was a great first 10mins.
I love Andros Townsend, and he’s doing everything I hoped he’d do when we signed him.
Darlow made some good saves today & the pen would have been huge for him.

Could have done with Scum loosing, but hopefully Arsenal get their fingers out again Norwich and Chelsea smash the Scum.

  12. An incredible win. Great free kick from Townsend. He was man of the match for me. He ran miles more than anyone else. Great save from Darlow. Very decent midfield play from Colback and Tiote. They have really improved our defense and Colback had a decent chance on goal as well. Well done lads.

  13. some absolutely **** decision making from the toon today. Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Townsend, Colback constantly making wrong decisions and giving the ball away cheaply. Rubbish if the truth be told.
Our midfield is the weak link in the team.

Ecstatic with the 3 points though, can see over 10000 toon fans at Villa Park next week, with or without tickets.

Aye Si, Lew puked at halftime but only a little bit thankfully. He’s grinding his teeth which means he’s a bit back to normal 🙄 still has a raised temp andslightly fast heartrate tho. just hoping tomorrow brings more improvement .

What the bloody hell are Arsenal playing at, just score will you.

  15. G2 – I agree about Colback & Tiote. Thought Colback in particular had a really good game today.
Thought our CBs were solid again – great tackle by Lascelles when Wickham was through, and the fullbacks did little wrong as well.

Hope Anita is ok. He looked to have been injured when he went off.

  16. The Gooners are really on Wengers case today mind.
They want him out by the looks of things.

They want to be careful, they’ll end up getting slagged off by the Soccer Saturday panel as we did today … set of bell ends!!.

They have a game in hand and have a pretty poor Watford and Everton to play. Hopefully their wins today spur them on.

  18. Great result, can’t believe last min pen for the scum though. Could prove a crucial point, but we did all we could.
So far so good, my confidence remains.
Arsenal simply can’t let us down again though……can they?

  19. Lascelles and Mbemba both made some great tackles today Sharpy. Our defense has improved immensely since Rafa took over. He had a difficult time at first but you can see the difference now. Establishing a proper holding midfield was a big part of it. If only we had a better striker up front. Cisse looked hopeless in the first half.

  20. Looks like Arsenal have pulled off a win. At this stage i would rather have the points on the boars than the game in hand. 50%.

  21. We’re still in it. That’s all we could hope for with the mess McTosser left us in. Well done Rafa. Two more to go.
