Following the news that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is on the verge of joining Everton as manager next season, rumours are rife that his first acquisition may be Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum.
The 25-year-old, who netted eleven goals for the Magpies last season, arrived at St James’ Park for £14.5 million in the summer of 2015 and despite his impressive goal tally, was unable to prevent Newcastle’s second relegation to the second tier in less than a decade.
The Northern Echo has reported that Koeman’s Dutch compatriot Wijnaldum is high on his priority list and with Newcastle now plying their trade in the Championship, the club are reportedly willing to listen to offers for the midfielder.
With English winger Andros Townsend also the subject of interest as the summer transfer window gets underway, manager Rafa Benitez might have a job on his hands keeping many of Newcastle’s first-teamers on Tyneside for next season.
