Oh, The Hokey Cokey!

You get a guy with one foot in, Janmaat out, Yedl-in, Saivet out and you shake the squad about, you do the transfer shuffle and you loan De Jong, that’s what it’s all about.

Yes it’s been a hectic couple of days in the transfer market for Newcastle and in the middle of it all was a hard fought home EFL Cup victory against Cheltenham Bruisers. With all the ins and outs in the last day or two it isn’t just the Newcastle strike force who are left a little concussed.

First of all – what about the game? Newcastle spluttered their way through the first half against a spirited away side and it looked as if was going to be a nightmarish cup-tie with Aarons and Mitrovic both leaving the field injured in the opening forty-five. And it looked even worse when Ayoze Perez had to go off to get the old ‘Terry Butcher look’ from the medical staff only to then return and almost instantly curl an unstoppable strike into the corner of the net to send Newcastle in front at the break.

The game then seemed to start going a little bit more to plan when Perez slid in a second shortly after half time. It seems we have stumbled across the secret of motivating young Ayoze…wrap his head in a bandage, it seems to focus his shooting remarkably. Newcastle created a few other chances but failed to increase their lead further. There was still time for another injury scare when top scorer Dwight Gayle had to go off with yet another head injury.

Thankfully for the attacking three, it appears their injuries are minor and the withdrawal from the field a rule sanctioned necessity where players with suspected concussions must not continue for their own safety. The injury sustained by Aarons looks altogether much worse and the club waits for further assessment. With the only other left wingers at the club being Yohan Goufran and Sammy Ameobi, that is a blow for Newcastle and surely Rafa must look at bringing a left wide man in before the window slams shut.

The transfers now then. The ‘outs’ first; De Jong out on loan seems to make sense. Let’s face it, it was unlikely anyone was going to offer serious money to take a player who has spent the majority of 24 months injured. He needs to go and get some much needed game time in a less physical league. Can you imagine if he played against Cheltenham? My goodness, the poor chap would have gone down in the pre-match handshakes with an injured wrist. His career on Tyneside may not be over though if he proves himself at PSV, he may come back and challenge for a place in the squad.

The Saivet one is weird. I mean why was the fella even signed in the first place? He has made four appearances…four. This is a player who played out wide on both the left and right hand side at Bordeaux before moving into centre mid. He also captained them, so he must be able to play a bit. Considering we are desperate for a wide man, there must be some personal stuff going on and he appeared delighted to be back in France so this one may not be down to footballing reasons. Amazing scouting job with that one though! What a waste of time, for Newcastle and the player.

Janmaat was expected by many to leave this summer and he finally makes a move to Premiership Watford for a reported £7.5m. That’s not a bad price for the full-back who on occasion looked a really decent player at Premiership level. He did leave us vulnerable at the back with his persistent charges down the right, but he also offered a really good outlet. Remember the part he played in Gini’s goal against West Ham last season after being released by Shelvey’s pass. His consistency suffered though and he wanted to leave so not too many fans will be overly disappointed.

He was only allowed to leave though when Newcastle had secured the services of American, former Sunderland loanee DeAndre Yedlin for an undisclosed fee thought to be around the £5million mark. Yedlin arrives on another one of these five year deals and has swapped Premiership bench-warming at Spurs for a crack at The Championship with Newcastle. He has bags of pace and is a threat going forward so it could be a good bit of business for Rafa as again he shows that he is not willing to let players go unless a replacement is secured. It does seem a bit strange though to bring Yedlin in and allow Mbabu to leave on loan, surely he could have provided cover with Gamez, Anita and Sterry also able to play at right back.

Benitez knows what he is doing though and seems to have a plan for this window and the next. Expect a busy end to August, he’s not done yet.

I think we might end up with a loan striker to be honest. I don’t suppose it’s helped not being able to offload Sissoko yet.

Stu – thought it might have been Bamford but I think one of the PL clubs have gone in for him – oh well.

I would be keeping Dummett personally as he is also good CB cover where he is arguably better anyway.

Kim – likewise. He can also fit into a 3 CB set up on the left side – similar to Keiran Clark.

  4. regarding dummett, i just got the feeling that rafa saw him as a saleable asset, and would move him on.
If the truth be told he is not good enough for a top 10 premiership club, not at left back that is. Its aclassic case of a group being rexucedbin quality, players like anita, lascelles who were looked on as poor or too young and inconsistent are now key players….though they wouldnt get anywhre near any other premiership club, quite simply not good enough.

  5. It should be obvious to everybody that selling Sissoko for 20-30 million will affect our incoming transfer budget. Rafa has made all of the right noises about not having to sell to buy but I think that is a bit of lip service to us fans. Technically, it may be true and he could ask Charnley/Ashley for funds but I think that would mean a bank overdraft. So, in all practicality, I do think we have to sell to buy for anything more than a few million.

I think that is why it has quietened down so much and why we are linked with a loan and relatively low priced Italian.

It should be intriguing if we are forced to keep Sissoko how he will react. Or will he do the biggest u-turn in the history of big-mouthed, inflated-ego, stroppy Frenchmen and go to West Brom?

Ice – I can’t say I’m overly sold on him either mate, but his record isn’t **** in the championship & I’d be grateful for him on Saturday. I know it’s rare & unlikely to be the norm to be without both Mitrovic & Gayle, but Bamford would be better than nowt I reckon.

  8. Bamford has been “a good prospect” for the last 3 years and he hasn’t delivered at all!

I’d try a sneaky bid for Whickham.

  10. Munich mate we have to get back up out of the Champs first before Mike hands over the big money to Rafa. So we’re stuck buying relatively inexpensive players as this new blogger laEric deSykes says 😀 . I think we’ve got the core of a fairly decent side to contest for the Champs title now. Ritchie and Gayle have been very good, hopefully Mitro will find his way as with Perez. Possibly some of the new signings like Gamez, Yedlin, Diame and Hayden will come through for us as well.

But between Derby & Boro he got 60 games and scored 25 goals. That was obviously in the championship – which is where we find ourselves.

Irrelevant anyway as he’s on his way to Burnley by the looks of it.

  21. Ings, Whickham, why on earth would any of these seasoned premier league players need to drop down to the championship to sort out wor lot. Thats not the way it works, god knows whre we would be now with rafa. we can’t even cajole a obertan, gouffron or riviere to move elsewhe to get a game, how can we expect to persuade a whickham to drop down the leagues ?

hate to say it but we are decidedly average, even with the massive a amount of tinkering going on by rafa. Just watch us today be absolutely batted at home by a slick running brighton side., who will dominate the ball and boss the game. 0-2 and a real wake up call for all toon fans in denial.

  22. see Lee Clark got one over on the mighty Rangers yesterday, some manager Clarkie. Some old toon lads running the show, Barton, Tavernier….
Clarkie the tinkerman, 15 new players from last season…funny old game football…. Rafas revolution is going the same way. It must be getting quite busy at the toon changing rooms with all the new players packed in there.
one less body in the huffy corner now that Obertan has moved on, pity we can’t get Tiote and Sissoko to come out and play, especially when they are probably costing the toon 50 – 70k a week !! I’ve said all along, the players have all the power, obviously sporting pride goes iut of the window when you can’t get things the way you want, how many players have sat on the bench and just taken the money, not having kicked a ball in anger for months… ? Who would be a manager, trying to stroke a whole series of massive egos to get somelne to do there job they are getting paid to do ?

  23. Dummett has done well and is a good player in the championship. I’m pleased we seem to be signing a LB though. Unfortunately Hiadara is a bit injury prone, like Aarons and we needed another option. Instead of signing Clark I would have just signed another LB and kept Dummett as defensive cover. Makes no sense now to have spent £5m on Clark, who is no better than Dummett IMO.

Agree, I know it’s early days to judge but I fear Villa fans are right about him having a mistake every game in him. He doesn’t fill me with confidence but it could just be nerves from him, lets hope he settles.

  25. Interesting comments by Rafa on transfer dealings, it’s clear we are waiting on Sissoko cash .

Benitez is relieved that United managed to do the bulk of its business early in the transfer window.Asked if he was confident he would have the squad he wanted once the transfer window closes, Benitez said: “If I go to the market one month ago with money, I could buy what I wanted.“Now I can go and I have to buy what is available, and it’s more close to what I think what I need.“Then you can say I need this player with this characteristic, and he’s there in the market.“Now it’s about as getting as close as possible.

  26. That’s Yedlin, Gamez and Anita at RB, Lascelles, Mbemba, Hanley, Clark, Dummett at CB. Lazaar, Hiadara, Dummett and Clark at LB. That’s more cover than we had for the last five years in the Premier League. I deduce that Rafa is buying and selling players and not just being told by the club and also he started from the back and now his keeper and defence are in place, will move forward. I’m not sure about Sels but hopefully we haven’t seen his best form yet and the international call up will do him good. Elliot still is number 1 when fit though in my opinion.

  27. Rafa on the future of Arma and others

“We extended the contract of (Rolando) Aarons, Armstrong and (Jamie) Sterry, because we wanted to be sure that these young players will be here and will grow with us,” said United manager Rafa Benitez.“But he knows that we’ll sign an experienced striker, and has been in contact with some clubs that can maybe get him on loan. “I think he is doing well and he has confidence that he can do well, but the problem when you are in the Championship and you want to go up quickly is that you need experience.“If you have young players you know that they have the talent, but maybe it’s not the right time.

I read that to mean we can expect an experienced forward in, god only knows who though at this late stage.

  28. I think that’s a better defence than we’ve had in the Premier league and actual specialist cover in each position. How ridiculous is that? Is it any wonder we’ve been relegated twice in ten years. Who did we have in the last few seasons? Janmaat, Anita, ?? Colo, Taylor, Williamson,?? Dummett, Mbabu,??
(Assuming Hiadara injured and before Mbemba signed )

I can’t believe Rafa fancies this lad, he has 50 in 123 apps since 2013, but he’s 33 now. Maybe we’re all missing something here? all the same he’s the last I would of thought of.

Quite agree Ice, a real shame not having Mitro and Gayle available to us, it’s asking a lot of Perez to carry us, maybe it’s a day for Arma to shine if picked. There’s always Ritchie and Goofy, both able to pop up with a goal.

Would he provide more than Robson Kanu or Bentner who are both available on a free?.
I can’t have this blind faith in Rafa coz if Pardew or McClaren was trying to sign this lad there would be uproar.

As for Sissoko – if he’s fit enough for a call up to France the ****** should be in the team today rather than chatting **** to French media.
