Just three days after our disappointing 2-0 defeat to Wolves, we face Walter Zenga’s side yet again in this EFL trophy third round clash.
In what was a subdued performance by Rafa’s men, tonight represents the perfect opportunity to take stock of what went wrong and take the necessary steps to correct it.
Team News
With squad rotation a must at this level, signs point to Benitez handing new striker Daryl Murphy a start in tonight’s match at SJP as well as defender Grant Hanley. How he intends to shoehorn the former into the starting line-up remains to be seen; fellow striker Dwight Gayle’s record in this competition (below) certainly isn’t to be grumbled at with the former Palace man netting 8 goals in 6 appearances during his career.
#Newcastle‘s Dwight Gayle’s #EFLCup career record:
Apps: 6
Goals: 8#NUFC #Wolves #wwfc— Goodbrand Stats (@StatsChristian) 20 September 2016
As is now common knowledge, full back Vurnon Anita will not appear in tonight’s game or indeed the trip to Villa or game against Norwich City after getting sent off in Saturday’s defeat.
Prediction
With Zenga’s men not bothering to head home after Saturday’s game with a return fixture just a couple of days later (correct me if I’m wrong), a prolonged stay in the north east capital could indeed unsettle tonight’s opponents.
With the presence of Murphy up top providing a much more direct outlet, and the likes of Hanley using tonight as a means of proving their worth to the gaffer, tonight we’re expecting the Magpies to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat with a comfortable 3-1 win in the return fixture.
Predicted Line-Up (4-4-2)
GK: Darlow
RB: Yedlin
CB: Hanley
CB: Lascelles
LB: Lazaar
RM: Ritchie
CM: Colback
CM: Hayden
LM: Atsu
CF: Murphy
CF: Gayle

Gouffran looking for goal of the season competition all on his own it seems…
Stuart79(Quote)
2-0 Gouffy!
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Have we won the same amount as the bottom 5 or 6 too? Or scored the same amount, or conceded the same amount? We will be fine. This is a whole new squad. There is bound to be the occasional wobble. I always said we wont click properly until we are well into October. I’ve seen nothing to suggest we wont have a good season.
Shamrock(Quote)
Well it’s going better than the last match. Oh ye many doubters.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Shamrock, a bit of whingeing and dooming and glooming are par for the course mate…
Let’s not forget we are cuffing poor Championship teams mate, we’re miles away from being average …
Munich Mag(Quote)
Dortmund have scored 6 goals twice on the trot, they have 4 goals tonight away to Wolfsburg with still 20 minutes to play..
Now that’s proper football, watch the Leicester goal this evening, they play high speed high pressure football…. proper attacking football, now that’s what I want to see, not diddy’s who can’t pass a ball to each other..
Munich Mag(Quote)
Guess we will find next season eh MM, after we go up in first place that is. I predict a finish of 12th/13th in the PL next term then 9th/10th season after.
Shamrock(Quote)
Shamrock, hope so mate, we’ll need to rely on the play offs to go up I reckon…
Munich Mag(Quote)
We’re not Dortmund yet MM mate but we’re finally heading in the right direction with Rafa.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Norwich winning away at Everton 🙄 🙄
Icedog(Quote)
1-5 Dortmund..
Munich Mag(Quote)
G2, I like your optimism bonny lad 🙂 Now if we had gotten Tuchel and Aubameyang we’d be really like Dortmund 🙂

Excellent, cheers Kim. I tried searching the site, but no idea what i’m doing!
Shamrock(Quote)
Quote from someone of that radio site: ”Ritchie’s f’ing magic, he wears a magic hat, he could of signed for West Ham, but he said no f*ck that, he wants to play for Rafa in the famous black and white, and when we win the championship we’ll sing this song all night.”
Shamrock(Quote)
Playing better than Saturday anyway…
Dubai Toon(Quote)
Norwich beating Everton 1-0. That will be a good match when we play them.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
BATTY had that on Facebook last week, someone is copying him lol 🙂
Icedog(Quote)
Norwich are a solid unit, i’ll give them that.
Shamrock(Quote)
Ice 😆
Shamrock(Quote)
‘Diame’s bender….There was a lot of bend on it’ 😯 😳 😀 haha.
Shamrock(Quote)
Two cracking Toon goals….
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyG5dVN6jB0
Munich Mag(Quote)
Diame’s had quite a few chances and hit the post as well. Looks like he’s coming along.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
I’m watching the Norwich match while listening to the Toon. Norwich playing well. It will be a tough match for us I think..
Dubai Toon(Quote)
Dubai, Norwich will cuff us, that’s for sure…
Munich Mag(Quote)
Norwich just scored a cracker! 2-0. Toffees in a bit of bother
Dubai Toon(Quote)
Norwich up 2-0 now.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
That’s right Rafa. Get Ritchie out. Save him for Villa. He’ll tear a few legs of against them…
GeordieTwo(Quote)
I think we’ve got it in hand now. Bob and weave lads….
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Some rope-a-dope for the last few minutes….
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Crikey what a goal by Gouffy.
Shamrock(Quote)
Our we in the final yet?
Stuart79(Quote)
Well comfortably into the next round of the cup… Why didn’t we do this on Saturday. I’d have rather had the 3 points. But happy to get through. Get the winning mentality back.
Dubai Toon(Quote)
Not yet Stewie mate but we’re getting there. Lovely goals from Ritchie and Gouffy. Another clean sheet as well.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Leeds 1 Blackburn 0 8,500 at Elland Road…that can’t be right surely !!
Munich Mag(Quote)
That’ll do nicely, lets go on a nice winning run now please lads.
kimtoon(Quote)
Comprehensive. Got the job done – not sure whether it’s because we improved or wolves used up everything on Saturday.
Andy Magpie(Quote)
”Newcastle are at promotion rivals Aston Villa on Saturday and Wolves are at home to Brentford.”
Villa are already 7 points behind us. They best beat us on the weekend or they can forget the top 6.
Shamrock(Quote)
And that’s how it’s done lads and lasses. 😀
GeordieTwo(Quote)
We look so much better with Goof & Diame in the side IMO – and with a more physical forward over Gayle.
Rafa needs to get a settled 11 IMO and have the likes of Perez & Gayle as impact subs unless suspension or injury hits.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Gouffran is this seasons Fabrice Pancrate. 🙂 Now there’s a blast from the past and our 09/10 season.
DJG(Quote)
Nah, I think we just turned up this time. Saturday was just a bunch of sleepwalkers.
DJG(Quote)
I would love to see us get a prem team and see what this side is actually made of.
DJG(Quote)
Shamrock I Wouldn’t write any team off in this league, especially Villa. I know they might be down on there luck at the moment but even a struggling side can cause an upset. Look at Wolve’s on Saturday. Huddersfield and Norwich are doing extremely well at the moment and even a draw could further the gap between us. I still think will win promotion but not easily.
On the game tonight good win. I couldn’t find a link to watch it unfortunately.

MM = Mystic Meg.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Much better result… who said the the championship teams are shown on tv a fair bit? Was there more coverage last time we were in the fizzy?
reckon we’ll beat villa. Their defence is poor. 4 point from the next two games I think.
It would be nice to beat Norwich after they scored in the dying seconds last season
Gashley(Quote)
Gash – it’s a while ago now, but I’m sure I managed to find our championship matches easier when we were last in the CC. Strange, not sure whether it’s due to loads of the sites closing or a lack of coverage… Always struggle for cup ties though.
Newkie(Quote)
Goofy’s goal was immense .Scoring that beauty and missing the one from three yards sums him up quite well 😆
Ritchie’s goal was good work as well, we finally have an actual winger who is willing to run into the box from an angle and slot it past the keeper. It’s been about 8 years hasn’t it?
Newkie(Quote)
So when is the draw then? I’m ready for the next round. I suppose we’ll have to wait until after today’s matches but then we need to know who we’re going to beat next! 😀
GeordieTwo(Quote)
MDS(Quote)
Good piece on Yedlin. Sounds like he did well enough yesterday to take over at RB with Anita out…

MDS(Quote)
Keep Gouffy and Murphy in there for Villa. No more mucking about with Perez. He will have to prove himself but we need points right now.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Well it feels good to be in the draw for the last 16. Can’t remember the last time we pit in any effort to make an impression in a Cup.
Shamrock(Quote)
Sham: it shows how starved/desperate for success we are. When Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U or even Liverpool win the League Cup or FA Cup it feels like an anticlimax to them. Van Gaal won the FA Cup and was sacked. I think Wenger has won a couple of FA Cups recently and there are always calls for him to be sacked.
We might even have a chance this year because Rafa likes to win stuff.
In my lifetime we have won the Fairs Cup and I was too young to even know what it was. I am not sure if it was even televised live. I know we didn’t have a colour TV until like 1974 so if it was shown it would have been black and white with Kenneth Wilstenholme.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
True Eric. I’d be very happy just to reach the last 8 to be honest. Even the last 16 feels good. A win would be epic but that’s just a dream that does not happen to the Toon. ?
Shamrock(Quote)
I had a DVDs of both legs of the fairs cup,but I gave it to worky on the other site to put on for the fans but it’s gone bye bye 🙁 🙁
Icedog(Quote)
Eric
I watched the first leg of the fairs cup final at SJP which we won 3-0.
I don’t think it was televised.
The return leg was not televised but I listened to it on the radio and if I remember correctly it was only the second half that was on the radio. We were losing 2-0 at half time and went on to win the game 3-2 so I heard all of the goals that mattered.
sidekick(Quote)
Southampton beating Palace (hee hee). Poor old Pards. He does love his cup runs….
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Pardsy: “if I’m honest I love a cup run as much as making up an excuse for the last loss. It’s two sides of the same coin for me.” 😯
GeordieTwo(Quote)
West Jam can’t even beat Accrington????
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Scum down 1 nowt at qpr
Icedog(Quote)
This is a lovely day of footy! We could see West Jam, Sunderland, Palace and ManU all go out of the cup!!! I know, it’s not likely with ManU especially….. But still.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Dam it scum winning 2.1 🙁
Icedog(Quote)
looks like a late winner for Bristol City, that man Tammy Abraham again
kimtoon(Quote)
Palace out the cup then
kimtoon(Quote)
So looks like Palace gone at least and what has happened to Breast Ham?
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Howay let’s play Sunderland in the next round ice mate! 😀
GeordieTwo(Quote)
It’s decided then. We’ll play Sunderland in the next round. Now, how do we arrange that?
GeordieTwo(Quote)
So West Ham did it by the skin of their teeth then…. Disappointing.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
west ham v Chelsea 😆
manure v man city 😆
Easy ride for Arsenal v Reading
Pool v Spuds
