Mike Ashley hints that 47-year-old could be future Newcastle United manager

August 14, 2017August 14, 2017 Andy The Magpie

As quoted by the Chronicle, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has hinted that Alan Shearer could well return to St. James Park as manager in the future.

There is no doubting Alan Shearer’s status as an icon at Newcastle United, with the former striker having managed a sensational 206 goals in 405 appearances for the Magpies during his time at St. James’ Park.

While Shearer the player is idolized by the club faithful, the 47-year-old did not quite enjoy the same success with the Tyneside based outfit on a managerial role.

Shearer took over Newcastle as manager back in April 2009 as Joe Kinnear recovered from heart surgery but it has to be said that the former striker’s time in the dugout was an unmitigated disaster as the Magpies won only one of their last eight Premier League games and ultimately suffered relegation into the Championship.

Following the relegation, Shearer did not continue in his role but Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has now gone on to open up the possibility of the ex-England captain making a sensational return back to St. James’ Park in the managerial capacity once again in the future.

Ashley said, “Alan Shearer came in at a time where he was probably one of the only people on this planet that would have kept Newcastle up. He did an absolutely fantastic job in everything else but the odd result not going our way.

“I thought it was the right thing to do for a football club and I would have done my job for Newcastle United if I had got one of their great legends in place going forward, rolling on the strategy – it would have been perfect.

“It didn’t work out like that way and then I had the very difficult decision to say is that person the right person to take us forward in the Championship.

“That is different and in my opinion he didn’t have the experience in the Championship. Everybody blames everybody else, I was totally happy with the appointment of him and I was responsible with going for the safer pair of hands in the Championship with Chris Hughton. Never say never though, Alan, if you are watching.”
