Exclusive Q&A: Bundesliga analyst tells us exactly what to expect from Joelinton

A few days on from Joelinton’s £40m arrival at Newcastle United, we’ve caught up with Abel Meszaros – Sport TV Hungary’s Bundesliga analyst – who has shared his fascinating insight into the former Hoffenheim star.

Without further ado, here’s the Q&A we carried out during our chat with the Bundesliga expert – a man who knows him better than most after watching him closely over the last year in Germany:

1) What are his strengths and weaknesses?

“Joelinton’s main strengths include his incredible athleticism (he has been a handful for the likes of Nicolas Otamendi in the Champions League, the Bender twins and even Niklas Süle), his dynamism with or without the ball, his strong pressing and even the ability to man-mark opposing playmakers, as Diego Demme found out Monday.

“His combination and holdup play with clever back heels, lots of quick turns make him an incredibly exciting player to watch and a nightmare to defend.

“He also possesses an ever-improving first touch, excellent upper and lower body strength and raw pace to outrun most defenders, with tremendous ball progression. He can create openings with his dribbling or runs and remains a devastating player in space. He is a fantastic target in the box: with 81 touches in the box he has the same amount as Ante Rebic, Yussuf Poulsen, or Kevin Volland.

“Weaknesses. He isn’t really a number 9 in the classic sense and isn’t what you would call a great\good finisher. He often arrives in the second wave of attacks, but can miss big chances, due to technique.

“He will sometimes struggle to strike the ball cleanly and overhit the target/miss volleys, etc.”

2) Is there any current Premier League player you would compare him to?

“I think a more defensively active, perhaps less consistent Richarlison is a decent comparison.”

3) After selling Perez and failing to resign Rondon we’ve lost two players who scored 55% of our goals last season. Do you believe he can do the business in front of goal? How many would you back him to score next season?

“That’s hard to say, for two reasons..

“1 – The thing with his numbers, which if you are using advanced metrics like expected goals are pretty strong, but that’s more a by-product of him playing for the league’s most attacking team/coach combo in Hoffenheim and Julian Nagelsmann. Only Bayern had better XG numbers than Hoffenheim. The other thing with Joelinton is that while his finishing has improved, but still he has missed a number of big chances in key games and is below his XG output by about 2 goals. He isn’t necessarily a natural, instinctual finisher and can struggle with technical execution (overhitting the goal due to foot placement, leaning back on shots).

“2 – I’m by no means an expert on NUFC style, but with Steve Bruce and the departures of Rondon and Perez, my wild guess would be that stylistically it will be considerably less attacking than that of Hoffenheim under Nagelsmann last year.

“That should create much fewer chances for Joelinton, who to his credit has the physicality and skill to create shots\chances for himself.

“Still, I’d be really surprised if he went over 10 goals in his first season.”

4) What do you know of his attitude and application on the pitch? Considering we’re a little short on quality, we’re a team that relies on giving 110%..

“Basically, that’s another one of his calling cards.

“He’s dynamic without the ball, he presses well and has the ability to man-mark opposing playmakers.

“Also, after 2 years out on loan in the Austrian league at Rapid, even the hardcore Hoffenheim fans (of which there are not many) didn’t expect him to make the squad in preseason. Yet, Nagelsmann and the staff were so impressed with him this time last year, because of his work ethic and dynamism, that he actually started the first match of the season against Bayern!

“What a meteoric rise!”

5) Do you believe the alleged £40m paid was a fair price, a bargain or a bit overpriced? There’s a few worrying this is a big risk and others are hugely excited..

“In my scouting profile, I argued that statistically, physically and style-wise
Ante Rebic (there were a number of £50m rumours after the World Cup, I
think Man Utd were one of the suitors) and Richarlison (signed for £50m last summer) are good comparisons as they all had 1 great season and went for similar prices.

“That being said, I think the risk is perhaps greater, because NUFC’s current situation isn’t ideal and I’m somewhat skeptical that Joelinton is ready to “be the new number 9”.

“If that’s the club’s idea\reason for bringing him, it might be misguided\overly optimistic, as I still think his best role is either a secondary striker, or perhaps as a pressing/defensive oriented number ten behind two strikers in like a 4-3-1-2.”

6) Finally – How do you think he’ll cope with the fact he’s inexperienced, still just 22, yet carrying the pressure of being our club record signing, our new number 9 and the man tasked to do deliver for us in a new league? Can he cope with the demands of the Premier League (both physically and mentally) after just one full season in Germany?

“Physically, he was crushing the Bundesliga, to the point where a few of us
on Bundesliga Twitter were making Godzilla jokes!”

“Given that he’s joining a new team late and that he’s not an established veteran, it could take a while to get used to the new culture\environment.

“He’s also a confidence player and last season there were a lot of things right out of a strong training camp that went right for him in a perfect attacking setup under Nagelsmann. These signs plus NUFC’s current setup under Steve Bruce make skeptical of a hot start and it could be a while (maybe a year or more) until he settles in.”

Fascinating stuff from Abel here.

It sounds to me like he has all the raw attributes to be a huge hit at Premier League level, however there is a few question marks over his role as a central striker and ‘number 9’.

He’s certainly got the size and skill to cause Premier League centre-backs big problems according to Abel, so let’s hope he can really develop into a top goalscorer following his £40m move to Tyneside!

  1. From the last thread… stuart how can u point out 3/4 games were rafa won us points then when sharpy points out 3/4 games were we lost points hes wrong.

  2. So Sports Direct are facing a €675m tax fine in Belgium. Oops. They have confirmed they pay NUFC £2m a year for advertising though…

Davey – I simply point out that having a good defence won us points. That was Rafa’s influence. Sharpy gave three examples of where Rafa cost us points. Two out of the three games we kept clean sheets. Logic says then that clean sheets were costings us points. I find that rather odd.

Stu – Focusing more on defence than offence against teams like Fulham, Brighton and Cardiff. His tactics that you credit as gaining 10pts. Yet the same tactical genius managed 2 points out of a possible 12.

  4. Am not siding with anyone, rafa did excellent gettin us points in certain games but he also lost us points in others. Our defence wont be as good now hes left thats for sure. Rafa is gone and bruce now will get my full support as will the players. Boycotts dont work

Just seen this one the news. Not sure what cost is involved in doing it, but I could well see Ashley doing it with Newcastle as well – 1 to stop alternative Newcastle products being made 2 to **** Geordies off that he owns the name Newcastle (even if it is just in a footballing sense) – but it would also stop any other football team having the word Newcastle in their name.

  7. I’m sure the financial mess Ashley has got SD in is having impact on the takeover – what I can’t decide is, is it Ashley wanting more money (or money up front) or is it the Arabs thinking balls to you mate, you NEED the money so reduce the price or sell on our terms – either way, I’m sure that’s the hold up.

      (Quote)

  8. Sharpy, that was a **** interview and totally expected after he’s had such a nightmare with SD.
He does this everytime the heat is on, PR at it’s finest, poor old Mike, he’s just misunderstood you know 🙄
He says Rafa is all about the money first, yet in the next breath says he wanted to give him an 8 year contract! well that would of cost him a pretty penny. He could of left for China 2 seasons ago when they first asked him, he didn’t cause he saw a project with us, sadly it isn’t shared.
Mike said they had Joe all lined up in feb but Rafa wouldn’t sign off on him at £40m, maybe Rafa was concerned he isn’t worth that as unproven . He probably thought he could get more with the £40m . There is no way Rafa uproots to China if there is a remote possibility that he can see through a project with us .
On Bruce he doesn’t understand the hostility, says he’s one of them, i don’t get it. No Mike you don’t, you really don’t .

    On the takeover, he says

And referring to the BZG’s approach to buy the club, Ashley said: “‘The last bid, the one from UAE, he’s a prince and he’s got £38bn or £100bn, all these numbers — well, why would you even care what you’re paying then?

“What difference would £10m either way make?

So that would imply he’s asking too much or moving the goalpost.
That interviewer, is it Samuel ? He should of pressed him more on the takeover issue, he should of asked him if part of a sale includes him retaining merchandise rights and advertising rights, as then we would at least understand if that was a potential deal breaker.
This was a damage limitation exercise, a PR offensive driven purely by the fact he’s in the sh it with the Belgium tax authorities and the mess at NUFC and SD.

I do agree with Mike on one thing though cause i have said it myself.
    This

“The day someone buys Newcastle, they’ll do their due diligence – and finished. It will happen like Manchester City.

“By the time the media find out, it’s already complete.

So yesterday i went to the foot clinic, i go every 8 weeks and the guy that see’s me is a massive Liverpool fan, he’s from there, loves Rafa and we always talk about Pool and the Toon.
Anyway he goes up to Anfield often and he knows that Sheikh Khaled, has met him a couple of times when he is at Anfield, he goes a few times a year and is apparently an approachable guy, very friendly.
He says he’s a massive Liverpool fan and just loves football, he really wants Liverpool but they won’t sell to him at any price.
I asked if he’d like him to buy it, he said definitely, he loves liverpool and football in general, also said he won’t have been a timewaster with our bid and certainly has the funds to buy us so is confused as to why it hasn’t come off.

Anyway, it was an interesting conversation, thought i would share.

Department stores are dead. I was in the first ever Department Store last week. Macy’s, formerly Marshall Field’s in Chicago. There were literally 5 people in there. I was only in there to take a picture of a mosaic on the ceiling and not to even buy anything.

Amazon killed the Department Store. A new Buggles song.

Unless Fatty is making it multi use he is going to take a massive bath on this. I said it from the start. But H of F doesn’t own the properties so I don’t see how it can work unless he does a redevelopment deal with the owners.

  11. Well I’ve read the interview and I just got things wrong – Ashley really is a nice guy with NUFC’s best interests in his heart. 🙄 😆 😳

      (Quote)

  12. Good timing of the interview as well though. It’s got us all talking about that and distracted from the fact the club did NOT sign another player by the weekend was they claimed they would – largely because we didn’t initially offer enough for The Saint.
Even now with only a few weeks to go, we still mess around trying to save a couple of mill rather than getting the players in we need and allowing Bruce time to work with them.

I think that’s Ashley learning from his mistakes isn’t it?! ?

      (Quote)

  13. Sharpy , exactly, probably haggling over a million or so when that’s the exact thing he criticized BZG about with his what’s £10m here or there if you want it and have the money remark. 🙄

Everything in it is contradictory and his words are the same as every time he speaks. His actions are the evidence not his words.

Oh and Sharpy – blaming Rafa for a player missing a penalty at Cardiff is taking your argument to a new level of oddness. Maybe peak oddness.

      (Quote)

  17. We were drawing 0-0 in the 90th minute when that pen was missed. We should be beating them, we didnt. Also who allowed kenedy to take pen!!

      (Quote)

  18. So we have gone from Rafa improving our defence beyond recognition and getting credit for it to now blaming him for us not beating Cardiff and for letting Kenedy take a penalty. How far do you want to take this, Davey? Improving the defence is a clear reason why we stayed up last season and got over 40 points. It’s consistent and it’s has clear parallels with good results. Pointing out individual games as a *** for tat argument against Rafa really isn’t rational.

That sort of confirms what I said too, Kim… BZG have the money. I don’t think this is the issue. They may well have done due diligence and felt the club wasn’t worth becoming the second most expensive football club in history…

      (Quote)

  22. Stuart, You were initially responding to a post where I said that we basically have the same defence and midfield as last year and, depending upon signings we could have a decent attack, so I felt that we were in an encouraging position. To paraphrase your response we are 10 points worse off because we no longer have Rafa to organise it.

Now we have plenty of evidence to show that a brilliant coach is worth 10 points at least. See SAFs successors as just one example, The question is does that apply here. Had we finished on 35 points last season we would still have survived. This would have required us to concede an extra 20 goals, 68 as opposed to 48, given that’s what those around that mark did. Given the defence we have and that Bruce is also known as a defensive coach I doubt that we will concede that many this year. It’s goals scored that is likely to be our problem. Every season we have some freak wins and losses, are they the credit of the manager or the team? if the manager then even Pardew’s reign needs reassessing.

I’m not convinced that Rafa was worth 10 points at our level. His metrics don’t indicate that he was.

To be fair, Rafa was not my first choice for reasons I explained at the time, He did very well, and I’m sure we will miss him, the question is, how much?

      (Quote)

  23. Dubai, yeah mate, it’s all points to them seeing something they didn’t want or jabba moving the goal post.

  24. Stu.. you pointed out certain games that rafa won for us and rightly so, but he has to be accountable for certain loses, football isnt just about defending its about scoring too. It doesn’t actually matter who took the pen, it was the fact we should of been beating them anyways. Worst league start for donkeys years. Whos fault is that? Listen ad have rafa back in a heart beat and never wanted him to leave but he has to take blame in some of our defeats if hes gona take credit for some of our wins.

Looks like they’re planning Joe as a CF. He’s never played there so it’s fingers crossed on that one. A front 3 of Almiron, Joe, Maximin holds a lot of promise. They could also offer some sort of deal for Caroll. Come and train with us. If you get fit we can consider a pay as you play deal. Something like that. We’ve also got Gayle still.

  44. When it comes to our CF situation, I don’t know what my preference is based on the suggestions so far –

    1) Charlie Austin for £8m from Saints.

    2) Andy Carroll on a free transfer.

    3) keep Gayle.

Obviously they will be back up to Joelinton, but all 3 come with their injury problems. Based on that I keep coming back to keeping Gayle, coz any other option will cost money and could be out longer than Gayle.

I know none are idea, but I think the money is being spent on other positions.

Ideally I’d sell Gayle and Muto and use that money for a decent replacement, but they aren’t gonna have time to do that.

Regards Bowen and Hull wanting £20m. I’d give them Atsu or Murphy and £10m.

They are 2 quality players imo. Young so I worry about them settling in and being ready to go from the off. We have quite a few young lads though and I feel it’s quite a tight knit squad – Bruce will encourage that and help them bed in i reckon.

  49. True Kim, but he does not seem to be a back to Goal number 9 more somebody creating and coming in from deep. I agree I would be happy to see a good front 3 rotating, but does that mean a back 4 or a 2 man midfield, we not allowed 5-3-3

      (Quote)

  50. Prem – I think a back 4 with Hayden in that holding midfield.
Shelvey and Longstaff ahead of him with Shelvey putting balls through for the front 3 and Longstaff encouraged to be more box to box and support the front players, but drop deeper when needed.
Front 3 of Almiron, Joelinton and the Saint rotating.

    That’s my guess anyway.

He’d still have the option of 3-4-2-1 if he wanted to go more defensive in certain games as well though.

  58. The Saint deal has went very quite, thought there may have been photos of him in the Toon today like.

I had hoped they would get him and Stanley wrapped up pretty quickly this week to leave time to get last minute business sorted – not that we’ve done that in recent windows like.

imo we have a canny right winger at the club Yedlin has pace can tackle and cross, just need a good right back to back him up

Ice, yep, he’s an awful defender but would be a great winger as you say.

  60. It hasn’t just taken 12 years Kim but they’re the longest 12 years of my life!

Just offer young N’Soki a decent contract and stop the bloody penny pinching. No doubt it’ll be the same with Maximin. Just get the deals done!

  61. Georgio, i can’t see anymore in now, a couple of loans maybe or a free possibly.
We know how this pans out by now, it’s a well read script.

  62. Kim I think the club are in panic mode. They’ve hardly spent at all yet and must do something to stop boycott talk and Rafa chants at SJP. It would hardly be backing Bruce to only sign one player! I think they’ll eventually get the two french lads in.

Kim – if we can get Stanley & the Saint in and then loan young Wilson with a view to buy (like we did Kenedy) and took big Andy back – id be pretty happy with that I think.

Sounds canny that mate, yes I’d take that too… was hoping we could get Jarod Bowen in too though, but not at prices quoted.
