West Ham 2-3 Newcastle: Terrific Toon tear Hammers apart in well deserved win

Well, that’s more like it!! Get in. Where to even start with this one. What an absolutely ridiculous game of football.

There were eyebrows raised before the game as Jonjo Shelvey came back into the team to partner Issac Hayden in midfield, with Matty Longstaff dropping to the bench. Those eyebrows stayed raised for various different reasons. We simply tore into West Ham and deserved to win far more convincingly than 3-2.

Wether it was sensing unrest in the home crowd, a point to prove, or tactically changing things up, it was just wonderful. The most entertaining half of Premier League football we’ve played in years, 2 goals, dominant man for man, dominant in every area, yet still nervous at half time.

I honestly have never felt how I felt about Saint Maximin at half time, he was simply sensational, and both him and Almiron tore West Ham to shreds. Yet both of them managed to miss glaring opportunities. Really, if the score had been 5-0 at half time it would have been just, yet it was Clark and Fernandez that got the goals via two headers.

I expected the second half to begin with an absolute onslaught from West Ham. It didn’t. It begin with Jonjo Shelvey curling one around the wall for a glorious 3rd!

The second half seemed like a bit of a formality to be honest but as expected we dropped deeper and deeper as West Ham tried to save face.

They ended up doing that by making the score line look more respectable than it should have ever looked, but despite two late goals from them ,the second a smart finish from Snodgrass, we hung on for a brilliant win. I

t would have been a travesty if we hadn’t taken 3 points today.

I’m sure there will be more time for more thorough and forensic reports in the next few days, but all credit to Bruce and the players for a wonderful win.

We bounce into next weekend’s game with Bournemouth and if we play like that again against the Cherries then another 3 points beckons.

HTL!

  1. If we were told that come the beginning of Nov we’d have to same points as Spurs and be 1 behind Man Utd – we’d have probably laughed wouldn’t we?!.

  2. I don’t really have any complaints about the game. Having 5 non-scoring left wingers didn’t hurt us. If you were Gareth Southgate who would you pick – Hayden or Rice?

  3. There is a lot of talent in that team. We seem a little bit unbalanced but perhaps if one of the strikers (left wingers) get a goal it could lead to a torrent.

  4. And the Man U fixated press were having a giant w@nk bout Rashford again this week. St Max did more in this game than Rashy has done all season in the PL.

  5. Yes Mr Ed Woodward we do have specials this evening. Tonight at Stuart’s Indian Emporium we have the McTomanay, equally as bland and average as the Declan Rice but a lot less expensive. It is Scottish, of course, so it might contain various mystery meats and innards but don’t hold that against it because that keeps the price in check. 10p then. Whereas the Declan Rice will cost you 80 mil.

  6. And a side of Joelinton? No, we sold out of that. Some bloke from Newcastle called Nickson bought the last one for 40 million. We all thought it was a bit strange because it was priced on the menu at 20 million.

      (Quote)

  7. Now that I think about it. That Nickson character kept mumbling about needing more left wingers and being willing to pay a premium to convert them into Brazilian Alan Shearers but with sell-on value.

  11. Terrific performance. Almiron and especially Maxi are so quick. It’s almost exciting!
Having said that West Ham were rubbish, particularly in midfield. If Rice is worth £80m than Matty is worth more. Ridiculous.
Of course it had to be a nervy finish, this is NUFC after all.

  12. They just showed highlights here. I watched the full match yesterday but couldn’t record it.

Good to see Jonjo do something from set pieces. You have to admit he has been pretty **** at them over the last couple of years considering his undoubted ability. Skying them into the Leazes usually. Luckily London Stadium is 350 mile away so he couldn’t do that.

Almiron went mental for the 2nd goal which was good to see. Shows he is committed and having fun despite his own lack of end product.

  13. We are still in a relegation scrap but I think we will survive. We have some good players and that is not just because we played OK yesterday.

The main thing is the current bottom 3 are ****.

When teams lose 8-1 and 9-0 it usually means there is something seriously wrong. And Norwich cannot defend. We would have to seriously mess up to be below these 3.

  15. Steve Bruce’s record in the PL tells us that we could finish 10th or 18th. We are right to question him. This is the best squad he has ever had though so maybe he can do something? I was a bit down after the 2nd half against Wolves but have picked up a bit. That’s the nature of football and especially NUFC. Rollercoaster.

    Sheffield United are 6th 🙂

I will use a big word now. Haven’t been on Ed’s for over a month because that lot excoriate Bruce. He is not Pardew or Ugly John.

  16. I’ve been banging on about how sh!te we’ve been at set piece, despite playing with 3 CBs and having numerous 6 footers in the side.

But yesterday we scored 3 set pieces. I have wondered why Dummett got replaced with Clark – but I think Clark is more of a threat at set pieces.

I think it something Bruce has been working on – Lascelles last week, Clark and Fernandez yesterday – and of course we know Schar can score a goal. It’s a big threat having goal scoring CBs.

Almiron and ASM were so exciting on the break. They do everything right – right up to the important bit – hitting the back of that net.
There is nothing Bruce can do about that. Almiron in particular has had numerous big chance so far this season, and yesterday was another to add to the list.
The only thing Bruce can do is decide, does he keep putting him in, or does he leave him out – there’s little he can do about composure or decision making – that’s all on Almiron.
Up to now he’s kept putting him in. For everything else he does in the 90 mins, it’s probably the right decision to stick with him. That’s easy to say when you win the game. But when you loose or draw and Almiron has missed big chances – not so easy.

It could have/should have been 4 or 5 yesterday.

I hope our forward player left feeling embarrassed that the defenders won the game and they knuckle down and start scoring some goals – coz when they start firing, I don’t think we will have much to worry about.

Eric – I think it’s a huge dilemma that any manager would struggle with.
So far, and even after scoring 3 yesterday – our front 3 have 1 goal and 0 assists between all of them.

When said like that, it’s a no brainer – it’s simply not good enough and changes should be made. You don’t stay in the league with a front 3 as unproductive as that.

But, have the same front 3 player THAT badly this season?. I know some will argue Joelinton has, but I will defend him by saying he rarely has a teammate within 30yrds of him. He did yesterday and he looked better.

The positives are that all 3 have had some really good chances – I would say maybe 8 between them (who’s where you would say ‘how the F has he missed that’). If they had scored half, it would feel half as bad and we could have an additional 3/4 points on what we have now – then we’d be up at 8th or 9th and everyone would be saying it was a Brucey fluke and it won’t last ?.

It’s fine margins at the moment, that aren’t quite going in Bruceys favour. But I do feel like ASM, Almiron and Joelinton are good enough to turn it round.

Georgio – they’ve got my head done in, and are really exposing me as a fickle fan ?.

When all is good and we win, I’m fine to stick with them. Loose or draw and they don’t score or create and I want them out!!

Ultimately though, with their overall performances, I think Bruce is right to stick with them.

  21. West Ham were awful and we outplayed them first half and it’s criminal that we only left the pitch at half time just 2.0 up. Equally criminal is that we let them back onto us second half which i feared would happen, even though we got the early third as soon as they scored their first we reverted to looking nervous and mistakes started creeping in.
When the second went in i really thought we’d end up drawing or worse losing which would of been a travesty based on our missed chances first half.
All in all i’m far from convinced by yesterdays result, for all our great forward runs it comes to nothing mostly. Are we gonna rely on defenders to get us goals all season cause our forward 3 simply cannot score and that’s sad because they do everything else well, just not sticking it in the net. 🙄

Kim – The critical side of me thinks that. They’ve had more game time than the likes of Gayle, Muto and Atsu. I’m not suggesting those 3 would be that much more successful (and can’t imagine they’d be close to as exciting to watch) but I do think that they would likely return more than 1 goal and 0 assists. Atsu has 2 assists already.

I agree that Gayle would have been more clinical with some of the chances those 3 have had.

But, who would you take out?. If it were Joelinton, I think Gayle may struggle as much as he has.

I think it would have to be for Almiron – but then Gayle is a different player. He couldn’t/wouldn’t do the work Almiron does – and wouldn’t play the right flank as Almiron does – so would leave the side unbalanced.

Or do you drop a CB in favour of Gayle and play the 4 of them up there. But then that messes with a pretty settled defence.

Having said all that, I’m not sure Gayle is in Bruceys plans and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sold in January.

On another note – goals for Williems, Clark, Fernandez, Lascelles and Schar already so far this season. I want to see that continue please.

  29. I think I will up my grade on Bruce to a C plus. He was “delighted” again yesterday. And he has a few quirks in his accent but has lived away from Newcastle for 40 years. He is not irritating which was the case with a few of our previous Managers.

Pards – arrogant in the extreme.

Ugly John – an idiot. Some of the things he said were like a 5 year old child. How did he pass the coaching badges tests?

Schteve – a deer in the headlights. Anytime anything went wrong you had the feeling that he had no idea how to fix it. How Ferguson put up with him I will never know. He did coach the 99 treble team but Bayern should have beat them about 9 nil.

  30. Many weekend positives from the manically depressive rollercoaster that is NUFC. Shelvey seems like he is over his injuries. Hayden was great. We have Longstaff The Shorter in reserve as well who absolutely dominated Man U. Dwight is fit and the forwards are a handful if only they could shoot straight. Not all of the set pieces were ****. I also think Bruce made the right subs, although maybe a bit late.

I am very impressed that Bruce rested Matty and that the Shelvey plan worked out.

But Everton eh, what the hell is going on there 🙂

  31. Well, where do we start with angry fans. Right, us. The boycotters. They wanted Ashley to spend money and when he spent they got angrier. And still the Mackems seem content with the chancers that bought them only for a quick profit. But I digress.

Everton – how to p!ss money away, Part 1.

Man U – How to p!ss money away, Part 2.

West Ham – give it 2 more losses me old muckers. ‘Arry will put his droopy face out of his Range Rover and start them off on a rage fest.

Arsenal – their fan You tube stuff is insanely angry.

Spurs – when they realise that all of their players are leaving and it was inevitable that with no squad depth and 400 million over budget for The Daniel Levy Stadium there would be trouble.

Elton John Utd – I didn’t really see the Watford decline coming.

  33. Bruce shouldn’t stick with the attacking three. I don’t really see alternatives but Gayle I suppose will be given yet another chance to show us he’s between PL and Championship. In there lies Bruce’s problem. Ultimately we need to attack more as a team. joelinton is always on his own so he has no space. That needs addressing just to give the lad a chance.

  34. I feel like Bruce may try and sell Gayle and Muto in January to raise funds for another forward.

A bit of an outside option for me would be Alfredo Morelos at Rangers. He’s a total maverick player, but he’s rapid, can score a goal and has a real edge about him. The obvious risk is that he’s a red card waiting to happen.
But, I think he’d be a good partner for Joelinton and from a business point of view – he’s only 23.

He’s a Columbian, and I remember the last Colombian to pull on the black n white. It was a bit crazy, but great fun to watch.

  37. Some promising signs from the strikers but they have to score. We don’t need to play a hold up forward when we don’t have one. Man City don’t. Liverpool don’t. Man City also often don’t start the Barazilian first choice forward – Jesus. We could get Gayle in the mix and call it squad rotation or bring him on at 65 minutes. Bobby Robson would often do that.

Anyway, glad there is more optimism. Even at The Chronic. And I have to admit again that I was a bit down after that Wolves second half but beating Southern Press’s favourite team has cheered me up. To beat WHam and Spurs away is a double tonic for me because of the pundits’ and press love for them.

  43. I am usually pretty good at making judgements on other teams and players. On NUFC I am too emotionally attached to do so. I reckon Bruce will get us to about 15th. He has very talented players but the squad is unbalanced. There is that stat that is bandied about that he has the lowest PL win % of managers with 250 or 300 games or whatever it is. That ignores the fact that he managed low budget teams. But he also has gone on death spirals like at the Mackems and Villa.

At least for today there is a ray of sunshine and I refuse to go on the black hole that is Ed’s blog that says the sky is always falling into that black hole.

He’s a strange dude. He really didn’t like Rafa. The affair with his daughter’s friend. The laser surgery on his hairy hands. And of course the firing from Sky for sexist comments. I think Sky were looking for an excuse to get rid of him and Gray.

What would Keys know anyway? If anybody on here hasn’t seen their show, it is terrible. Has beens and chancers. Does he really have any contacts in the game anymore? The best they can do for guests are the likes of Pards looking for a few days in sunny Dubai and a spot of free golf.

Eric – Shelvey looks set to sign a new contract. He remains a player a could take or leave – and certainly wasn’t how I felt when we signed him. I was really pleased to see him come in – the lads talent is undoubted, but his inconsistency and poor workrate has turned me off a bit.
He was brilliant at the weekend. I know you don’t rate his opposition but Shelvey played well. If he could do that more consistently then he’d be the first name on the team sheet.

We are going to have 6 centre halfs soon. Two who can bring it out from the back and the others who might get us some set piece goals.

I suspect what he meant was focusing on them rather than practicing them – im sure they practice them all the time.

There was some good analysis on Goals on Sunday (Sky) for the first goal at least where we didn’t put the corner straight in, knowing that WH would clear the box. The movement of our players and delay in delivery certainly looked as though it was planned.

  61. Eric, best wishes to your Aunt and having to navigate the system of care.
If she will need to go into a care home she will be waiting a while i’m afraid due to so many being closed down by local authorities . Depending on her wealth she may or may not have to pay for all or part of her fees. It used to be that once you were down to your last £23,000 they couldn’t touch any of it and you would then be entitled to funding, that was a few years back now don’t know what it is now.
Your first port of call should be to phone Care Direct in any case. They will guide you through the mind field and help you with all you need to put in place any care provision and allocate social workers and what have you. If she has a house of her own and needs care it might be worth considering selling up to buy a retirement flat in one of these new retirement villages that are popping up like my parents did, these places have domiciliary care which live on site but won’t be any good if she needs feeding, hoisting as she’ll need a nursing home for that.
    Good luck anyway Eric.

  63. Bournemouth has the looks of a low scoring draw. They haven’t been scoring much lately and had nil nils against Watford and Norwich. They did beat Man U 1-0 last time out but that is not the achievement it used to be.

  64. Lascelles is saying that it is finally starting to click for Joelinton. That is good news but it has only been 11 games. Their respective fanbases were disappointed in Fermino and Son in their first year and look at them now. For some it never works like Thauvin. It took Rondon this many games last year to settle and he had been at West Brom for 3 years.

There are signs with Joe but we are basically playing 3 strangers up front so it is bound to take time. Of course after a decent game for all of them against WHam there is the knee **** that all is now well. I am just as guilty as everyone else of this because I was a bit down after that Wolves second half and am now much more hopeful.

One game at a time as the old cliché goes. But maybe, just maybe Brucie is getting them to know his system and they are getting used to each other. And I still think there is a role for Gayle.

  65. Hopefully we can have a better atmosphere on Saturday. I don’t understand why it is OK to support the team at away games but the fan groups want to boycott the home games. Their reasoning is pretty lame to hit Ashley in the pocket and send a message to/on Sky. The commentators here mentioned the empty seats in the first home game and not a peep since. They are British commentators as well so I am guessing they are picked by Sky.

Look at Arsenal. Their fans are trying to hound Emery out. They hounded Wenger out and maybe justifiably, but he did win 3 FA Cups in his last 5 years I think. Emery got to the Europa League final. Still, you can hound a Manager out but an owner, that is more difficult.

I think NUST etc are in cloud cuckoo land if they think what they are doing will force Ashley out.
