West Ham want Benitez but could now appoint another ex-NUFC boss instead – Report

According to the Guardian, West Ham are keen to replace Manuel Pellegrini with Rafa Benitez, but may have to settle for Chris Hughton instead.

Pressure is mounting on current boss Manuel Pellegrini – who oversaw yet another dismal display on Saturday – and it’s claimed they’ve already made ‘tentative’ enquiries over a potential return to England for Rafa Benitez.

That said, The Guardian reveal that Pellegrini would earn ‘hefty compensation’ if sacked 18 months before his current deal ends, making a move for Benitez – who’s currently on £12m per-year in China – hugely expensive.

As a result, they report that Chris Hughton has been identified as a ‘realistic candidate’ and claim the former Newcastle United boss would be interested in taking over.

Hughton, who’s been out of work since Brighton sacked him in May, is said to have ‘admirers’ at the London Stadium and appears to be their cost-effective alternative to Rafa.
