Southampton 0-1 Newcastle: Saint-Maximin strikes late to earn huge win over 10-man Saints

We never do things the easy way, do we!

After missing several HUGE chances from open play seeing Ritchie have a penalty saved against a 10-man Southampton side, Allan Saint-Maximin stepped up late on to seal all three points.

Our first league win since mid January, a goal that ends our 4-game drought and a vital 3 points that takes us EIGHT clear of the drop zone after results went well for us elsewhere.

To a few people’s surprise, Bruce made a few changes in attack, dropping Joelinton (despite his best game in months on Tuesday) for Gayle and bringing Ritchie back in at Lazaro’s expense – who must also feel hard done by to miss out after his eye-catching all round display in midweek.

We stuck with 4-2-3-1, but Fernandez replaced Schar, Bentleb and S Longstaff made way for Shelvey and Hayden and Manquillo was passed fit to start at right-back.

The game kicked off and Southampton had an immediate spell of pressure, putting a few too many dangerous balls into Dubravka’s box and winning several early corners.

Then, the first of a whole host of first-half chances for Newcastle United arrived in what was to be one of the most entertaining yet frustrating 45 minutes we’ve seen this season.

Shelvey prodded a clever pass across the box with the outside of his foot, but Gayle’s close-range strike was straight at McCarthy. His save then fell to Almiron and a goal seemed certain, but he too also fired straight at the Saints stopper, and even forced a THIRD save in as many seconds on the resultant rebound.

It was a huge chance missed, yet just one of several we were to spurn in the coming 40 minutes.

Then to the first of TWO VAR incidents. Moussa Djenepo came in late on Isaac Hayden – who looked in some pain – and the referee brandished a yellow.

VAR then took a second look and it was a clear red, with the Saints winger late and high, giving Graham Scott no option to send him off after being instructed to watch it again on the pitch-side monitor.

10 vs 11 and we were well on top, with Shelvey pulling the string and Saint-Maximin having the beating of him man every time, but there was one issue – our woeful finishing in the final third (or should I say Dwight Gayle’s woeful finishing).

The former number 9 got on the end of an exquisite cross from Shelvey, but his point-blank header was straight at McCarthy AGAIN, and he fired another golden chance wide moments later after a brilliant run and cut-back from Saint-Maximin.

Another big VAR incident then came, with Sofiane Boufal adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. The video assistant referees took their time, but it was clear he leaned his arm into the ball and a spot kick was given.

Matt Ritchie stepped up and a pretty tame effort was saved once again by an inspired Alex McCarthy, who’d picked the perfect day to play like Oliver Khan in his prime!

We should’ve gone into the break at least 0-3 up, but instead made it another 45 minutes in the league without a goal – and more importantly gave Southampton that slight glimmer of hope they should have NEVER had going into the second period.

They gave as good as they got for the first 15 minutes of the second half, with neither side creating many clear chances, and Steve Bruce made a change on the hour mark as a result, bringing on Joelinton for Ritchie; who’d missed a penalty, been booked and failed to capitalise on our first half dominance despite all his best efforts.

Shelvey then began to go off the boil, misplacing more passes in a 2-minute spell than he had in the previous 60 and Jamaal Lascelles then had a stupid 30-yard effort sail over – which was proof a resilient Southampton were starting to frustrate us.

Lazaro then came on at right-back for the solid Manquillo to give us a greater threat down that side, but we weren’t creating much and the game threatened to fizzle out into another 0-0.

Then, the man of the moment stepped up. Allan Saint-Maximin.

His winner came via some awful indecisive defending from Valery – who failed to deal with Longstaff’s chipped ball in behind – but Saint-Maximin got in ahead of him, burst into the box and poked the ball in off the post past a previously unstoppable McCarthy.

The celebration that followed and resultant scenes in the away end were brilliant, with the goal not only securing a big 3 points in a game we had several huge chances to win, but taking us WELL clear of the drop zone after today’s results went in our favour.

With Bournemouth losing in the early kick off at Anfield, Watford being beaten at Palace and West Ham losing it late at Arsenal, we’re now 8 points clear of the bottom three and have leapfrogged Southampton in moving up to 13th.

A game that should’ve been MUCH more comfortable than the scoreline suggests, but a huge win all the same and improved performance – even if most of it was against 10 men!

Sheffield Utd next up at St James’ Park.

HWTL!

  1. OK. So people are not shaking hands. But there is something else in football – players are forever gobbing and blowing snot on the pitch. I think that would be a major health hazard and I think I might refuse to play even when it is given the go ahead again. They cant test everybody before every match.

      (Quote)

  2. You know, thinking about it this is doable if you cancel the Euros and the PL gets its act together. What would you need to play 9 games, probably 5 weeks? If you target May 1 that gives you 6 weeks to prepare. Enough time for players with symptoms to recover. You keep everybody at home except the 25 players in the first team squad and only essential support staff. Then you screen everybody and resume training in about 3 weeks. Play at least the first few games behind closed doors and see what happens in the general population before deciding on letting fans in.

Not ideal, but it could be done. The alternatives are probably worse and voiding the season would break twitter. Imagine the Mancs and Bindippers on there? The mancs are still going on about 1999 FFS and Liverpool got a bit big for their boots thinking they would do the double and with their “World Champions” ****. It was a 4 team tournament FFS.

  3. Stuart79:
I see the PL are talking about 5 teams being relegated next season as a one off…

Well that’s us gone then, if true. On the bright side Jabba might sell up now .

Eric, I’m inclined to agree about giving it to Liverpool, as you say they are so far ahead now.
Relegation is the tricky one . Still think this would be Hammers time to drop with that run in and Villa too. 😉

      (Quote)

  4. How can they end the season now? Villa have a game in hand and a win would take them out of the bottom three. So end it now and they go down? I suppose that’s why they’re thinking of having 22 teams next season with Leeds and WBA coming up but then again surely the likes of Fulham would probably sue as they still have a half a chance.

      (Quote)

  5. So Karren Brady saying PL should be null and void if PL games can’t be played . Someone thinks they’re going down .

      (Quote)

  6. It is too early to void the season if indeed that is what they end up doing. Karren Brady is writing out of self interest as Kimtoon said. I am sure if it is a PL decision and not UEFA that a hasty decision will be avoided because it is the interests of the 2 most powerful clubs in the country – Man U and Liverpool – to play the remaining fixtures. Not sure what other countries will do though as the situation seems worse in Spain for example.

I am all but certain they will cancel the Euros and probably the Champions League as they involve international travel. However, depending on how the testing goes, how many cases are in the general population and what happens after periods of self-isolation then there is a chance the PL will resume.

Can do without gobsh!tes like Karren Brady, Robbie Savage and Martin Keown sticking their oar in. They have all written columns on this which I didn’t read but I did see their headlines.

      (Quote)

  7. If you void the season then Leeds and West Brom would sue. It makes much more sense to have a 22 team PL for 1 season if football cannot be resumed.

  8. Mackems are out of the play-off spots. They really are in trouble now.

I was also listening to a Guardian Football podcast and was happy to hear that respected journalists share my view on PNev. They think he is an idiot and makes bizarre statements in every press conference. I have to admit I don’t follow the press conferences but base my own view on his idiocy as a co-commentator. He has to be sacked because I think the players realiise he talks nonsense and have tuned him out.

      (Quote)

  9. This has escalated pretty quickly, mainly because of 2 high profile footballers testing positive. Hudson-Odoi and Arteta have said they have recovered though. Man U played on Thursday so everything has changed in 1 day!!!! Are we supposed to trust the Govt and Football Authorities who were saying the exact opposite a day ago?

Cancelling and voiding the season would be a hasty and wrong decision. You have to let this play out for at least a couple of weeks until the self quarantine is over.

I have no idea how many people will catch this thing and the authorities don’t either. They roll out the “experts” who all contradict each other. How can you make a decision when they change their mind on a daily basis?

As far as NUFC are concerned it really doesn’t affect us much. I would like the games to be played but will accept the situation if they are not. There is time though so please politicians and suits let’s not get into full on panic mode. Sports, and especially football, are very high profile and having a media feeding frenzy can only make things worse. Sure, make people aware of what is happening but I am not making any decisions based on the view of Karren Brady or Robbie Savage.

      (Quote)

  10. OK, I have actually read Karren Brady’s views and they are not as hyperbolic as is being reported. She says that if the virus does not calm down the season should be cancelled and declared null and void. I have seen other people say this as well but I do not agree.

She is NOT saying to make the decision now although she does believe it is inevitable. This is the view of one person and no more or less valid than say Shearers or Linekers.

      (Quote)

  11. I can see I will be here by myself a bit and will try to make it mostly about football. Will Brucie have seen enough of our loanees to make a decision. You know he might have because he has seen them in training. I reckon he might go for Lazaro because at 20 million he is a big upgrade on Atsu who we could sell for probably 5 mil. Then we’d be set for wingers as Joelinton is really a winger anyway.

Rose is too old and Bentaleb is probably not going to get the gametime to show if he is any good or not.

I think Gayle is now surplus to requirements because he hasn’t scored and has been constantly injured. As has been the case all year we need a striker.

Then we need an attacking midfielder as we cannot rely on the Longstaff’s. You would hope they would push on but you can’t count on it.

That’s about it apart from tying down Manquillo and getting Dummett and Willems back. Our defense has never been the problem.

We could be a top 10 team if Ashley really sticks to his word and spends the net 50 million necessary for these upgrades.

BUT, is Brucie a top10 Manager?

      (Quote)

  12. Do you think that if it wasn’t the Red Bindippers that anybody would really be bothered if you just said that the season ends today and everybody finishes where they are at?

Not for relegation. That would have to be put on hold for this year and let the automatics from The Championship come into a 22 team PL for next year only.

I don’t think the Machesters would be bothered. City are banned and Man U would take the CL spot as it stands.

I don’t really blame the Scousers for thinking this way because they were on course to have the greatest PL season ever and with the Mancs rubbing their noses in it for 30 years they probably deserve some bragging. Then the other part of me thinks that I don’t care because both of these clubs are supported by a bunch of mouthy, entitled tw@ts.

      (Quote)

  13. Don’t get me wrong, I want the season to resume. But it might be funny to see the Bindippers and Mancs argue about an asterisk on the Title for the next 30 years. Voiding the season is not the answer Karren.

Still don’t know why we let him go – scores regularly and is better than either Atsu or Murphy. If he keeps up his current form can’t see Notts County being able to hold on to him. Can’t believe we are looking at Jones of Man U. He’s rubbish.

  18. Football’s done the overreaction thing again. Shut down because Arteta got the virus. I agree with continuing behind closed doors. All squads are 25 men, if the teams have 17 fit players then go ahead. There’s always some players out with flu etc. So get the 9 games played! Everything else brings total chaos that will spill on for years.

Obviously that horse has bolted and it is wait and see to see the level of infection in the UK. Could do with the football though, even as a distraction with everybody self-isolating.

There’s a full on panic and whatever is done will be criticized. It needs cool heads and not people saying to cancel the season. It is too early for that.

They should cancel the Euros though as that gives the various leagues options and the format in 13 different countries with varying levels of infection make it just a non-starter.

With Trump in charge this will get worse before it gets better. All he is concerned about is that he doesn’t take the blame. There was a trial run for this with a Hurricane in Peurto Rica that he completely botched the rescue work on. 3,000 people died. He went there and blamed the Mayor and then started throwing rolls of paper towels quarterback style to the locals gathered for one of the press conferences like it was all a big game/joke to him.

  30. I have read Shearer’s comments about the position regarding the football league unfinished games. I am not certain he realises how serious the situation might be. Playing beyond June I don’t think is on. Many players contracts end at the end of June. Could teams replace these with better players to avoid relegation? Hardly fair if so. The situation we are in leads to no perfect answer. We can only make the best of it. Liverpool should be given the title. If they were only one or two points ahead that might need a different approach, but we are where we are. More important than league champions is relegation and promotion. The best solution I have seen provides for no relegation and top two to be promoted but no play offs. Premier league would increase by two but return to 20 the following season. All the teams left in the FA Cup are Premiership teams. Premiership teams don’t start in the FA Cup until January so this year’s competition could be completed between September and December if the virus situation allows then. No solution is perfect.

  32. We have entered a football twilight zone where there is no news, only politics, football politics and speculation. The journos and ex-players speculate on what will happen but they know more than anybody else, it is all guesswork. I have read a few of the solutions and agree with Groucho that the 22 team league next year is best. I will probably not read anymore “solutions” as this situation is moving too quickly (and slowly, because nobody will come out of isolation for 2 weeks) to know anything. UEFA meet tomorrow and I am sure they will cancel the Euros. Then the PL meet and the only thing that is sensible is to delay any decision. If they void the season they are bigger idiots than I thought they were.

  33. They re supposedly closing all bars and restaurants here today. I don’t see that as a solution. There is a Starbucks next door to me and there are people in there. I will check later and tomorrow.

Not sure about schools, but that would be the obvious place to close but it would also cause chaos as what would working parents do.

The politicians are damned whatever they do so this time I will cut them a bit of slack. The only thing I will say again is that Trump is the worst crisis manager of all time judging by his handling of the Peurto Rico hurricane so expect mixed messages, shaming, blaming and passing the buck. Probably by tweet at 2am.

      (Quote)

  34. If this is indeed a break and not a cancellation, it means little to NUFC and most mid-table teams but it means a lot to some teams like:

Spurs – they get Son and Kane back and maybe Mourinho can cheer the fck up.

Bournemouth – have been in freefall and maybe can regroup.

West Ham – no wonder Brady wants to void the season. They are only out of relegation by GD at minus 15, 2 less than Watford and 3 less than B’Mouth. They have the toughest run in as well so Brady is being totally self-serving on her soapbox of a Sun column.

Mackems – they are currently out of the playoffs positions, but I also cannot see any playoffs this year whatever happens. Their whole financial house of cards is based in promotion this year, so they are truly Stewart Donald Ducked.

All playoff teams will be an afterthought as I think they will be cancelled whatever happens. Their only chance if football resumes is to get into the automatic spots. That’s why I think Sunderland have no hope.

      (Quote)

  35. Cancelling the FA Cup would be premature as well. Make the semi-finals 1 game rather than 2 which means the finalists have a mximum of 3 games. Play them next September and October. PL teams do not enter next years FA Cup until Jan anyway. It is not the time to be making hasty and rash decisions when everybody is so worked up.

      (Quote)

  36. Kim, isolate people who are high risk. That’s what we should do. The point is that we just cannot have a complete lockdown. It’s not sensible. We can mitigate the deaths of the risky by getting them isolated.

If people think it’s bad now then fast forward 3 months when 10 million people are unemployed, lose their homes, can’t afford to live anywhere and then poverty takes over. It will be real poverty not poverty that people talk about today.

  56. Darlow is also a bit suspect when coming to get a ball outside his box as well.

This stuff doesn’t really show up in training but it is Brucie’s job to build him up and I am glad he is doing it.

Imagine if it was Jose – he is ****, he look like deer in headlights and is bit of a t!t with a dodgy haircut. Always look in mirror and apply hair gel.

  57. Just talked to me Mam, it is her 78’s birthday today. She’s off to the shop to get some tabs. I doubt she has much to fear in Seaton Burn and if the smoking hasn’t killed her after 65 years then she will give a 2 finger salute to coronavirus.

(not saying anybody should smoke, I quit 20 years ago).

  58. But if anybody wants to quit smoking I have calculated how much it would have cost me over the last 20 years. $60,000.

I have also been on a few trips in the last 6 months – Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, England and Scotland, Mexico. I added up what I spent on all of these and it was what I would have spent on a year of smoking.

Coronavirus = a small portion of smoking related deaths a year.

I am not even an anti-smoking preacher, just want to give perspective when everybody is freaking out.

  60. sidekick:
Problem with this virus is that people are infectious for a few days before they show symptoms , and unintentionally infecting others.
Italy closed most of the north over a week ago and then the whole Country went into lock down last Friday to stem the infection. Yesterday they announced 3,590 new cases and 368 deaths , their highest daily figures yet.
By the end of this week it should be a lot clearer whether or notputting the Country into lock down is proving effective or not.
The UK can take its cue from that.
I am 72 , have heart disease , survived 4 heart attacks and 2 strokes , had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve with a metal one and my aorta ,which was dangerously dilated , has been wrapped in wire mesh to try and prevent it frombursting.I think I might be classed as high risk
Coronavirus is a lung disease and one tip I have been given is to breathe in deeply and hold my breath for more than 10 seconds . IfI can do this without coughing or any discomfort then I am unlikely to have the disease. I do this before I go out of the house so I am pretty confident that I am not infectious.

Sidekick – good on ya mate. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it passes you by ????

  61. Reminds me of “A day in the life” This Coronavis!!!

The way things change from Lennon and McCartney:

I read the news today Oh Boy, 4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire. How many will fill the Albert Hall?

Woke up, got up out of bed dragged a comb across my head, grab a smoke in seconds flat etc..

  62. Eric, that is my fav Beatles song, you got it a tad wrong though

Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Made my way upstairs and had a smoke
And everybody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall
I’d love to turn you on

  63. I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
    I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
    They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords
I saw a film today, oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
    Having read the book
I’d love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
