Journalist hints at takeover ultimatum & makes Mike Ashley prediction – but remains ‘convinced’

Luke Edwards has had his say on the takeover front in the last few moments, suggesting the next seven day are ‘absolutely crucial’ as a £300m Saudis buyout is concerned.

To calm any inevitable nerves, The Telegraph’s north-east reporter insists he’s both ‘confident’ and ‘convinced’ that this deal is going to go through, but hints that Mike Ashley may issue some sort of response to the rumours IF we hear nothing more in the next week.

This comes a few days on from claims that Premier League approval was “very close” and expected to be given the green light, leaving a few anxious fans wondering what’s going on.

That said, there are a few key factors which are bound to have slowed down the process. We are currently in the midst of a global pandemic and this deal has also come with a variety of complaints (via Amnesty International and BeIN Sports among others), so this was alway likely to take time.

It’s frustrating and almost unbearable – with many of us spending most of self-isolation refreshing Twitter and eagerly awaiting the big news with our cans in the fridge – but if we can wait 13 years, we can wait a few more days, right?

It’s unsettling, but the deal doesn’t appear to be in doubt, just delayed, with it reassuring to hear that Edwards STILl remains ‘convinced’ this is going to go through next week.

  1. The deal is done between Ashley and the Saudis. The hold up is not because of the “Fit Persons” test, because that has no red flags in it all – because that’s the way Staveley designed the governance of the new owning company, with precisely the opposition coming from all angles. That test is about an individuals financial and criminal past – note individual, not the entire Foreign policy of a sovereign state, nor some sordid pirating (or not depending where you are dipping your toes in the Gulf) between TV companies. The hold up is about the Premier League getting its ducks in a row legally So it can rebuff at least some of the veritable tsunami of vitriol from all manner of fruit loops. This is a commercial transaction in which it appears all sides have acted lawfully, the Government has stated it won’t interfere for the reasons above, the dosh is ready to be paid and the silence from both camps is infuriatingly correct. No finger pointing at MA this time he’s done the deal with us – patience, after 13 years of distasteful squalid wilful abscence another couple of weeks “ meks ne difference kidda “

  2. Really think it’s time the Premier League signed this off. It’s making the buyers, the fans and, I’m sure, Ashley himself, cheesed off. It’s beginning to take the initial excitement away from the whole scenario. Just get on and do it… and stop pi****g about.

  5. Be careful of what you wish for. Newcastle fans have suffered from delusions of grandeur for decades.

  6. Why write comments about Mike Ashley going to make ultinatums. Who to the Premier League? I don’t think so. It is them alone that is holding things up, so stop writing such drivel just cos you’ve got nothing else to write about.
