Bruce names NUFC player he’s been “quietly pleased” with – You could’ve fooled me, Steve!

“We’ll have the conversations after the season finishes. Lazaro hasn’t had the game time but I’ve been quietly pleased with him.”

Steve Bruce’s latest comments on Newcastle United loan star Valetino Lazaro.

He says he’s been impressed by the Inter Milan man and yet he’s barely played the bloke, despite him being arguably the most talent / lively loan signing we made in January. I’m not saying he’s been a world beater but he’s shown quality and urgency whenever he’s started (rarely!) or come on from the bench.

He scored at WBA, scored at Bournemouth (and smashed the bar) and immediately made an impact vs Spurs, making that run that then helped create Ritchie’s goal. I think he could prove to be a very handy signing, but Bruce has probably scuppered our chances by the lack of playing time he’s given him and the way he’s used him.

But I find it amusing that he’s saying he’s been pleased with him (as have many of the fans have been from the limited minutes we’ve seen!) yet he’s barely given him a chance. There’s been no excuse either when Ritchie has had spells out injured, ASM has needed a rest and Joelinton has struggled. Him starting Yedlin out wide over Lazaro vs Spurs was ridiculous.

Personally, I don’t think Lazaro wants to stay or will. Plus, if we only have £30m to spend why use £20m for a player the manager only seems fit for the bench. That’s a lot to pay for someone especially when the Manager has been quoted as saying, “we’re looking to improve all round.”

Plus signing Lazaro sends another message to the youngsters and in particular Tom Allan who has looked very promising in his brief appearances and is obviously someone the Club think highly of.

If we’re going to sign him, he wants to stay and we pay that money then for me he has to be good enough to start in the manager’s eyes and that seems far from certain. One wonders if there’s an ulterior reason Bruce hasn’t signed him.

It’s not as if Bruce hasn’t had a chance to rotate his squad and give Lazaro more opportunities but he hasn’t. so, for me it’s not a signing to make. It has been mooted we might extend his loan which does seem a good option and far more sensible.
