Fun88 first signed a deal to sponsor the team’s shirts way back in 2017, and it was estimated at the time that this contract was worth £6.5 million per season. With Fun88 being stars in the online sports betting world since 2008, it made sense for them to recently sign a long-term extension deal on 20th July. Stamping their bright and eye-catching logo on the front of the team shirts and spreading the news of what Fun88 does.
But what do they do?
They actually go a lot further than offering a sportsbook for fans to bet away on to their hearts’ content. The company also provides virtual sports betting, which enables players to choose their own odds, with instant results and no wait time for bets to settle. This type of betting has been incredibly popular throughout the recent Covid pandemic, for obvious reasons. In fact, 50% of clubs in the 2019/20 Premier League season had gambling related shirt sponsors. We spoke to a representative from Labslots.com, an expert casino review and comparison site who had the following to say:
“The English Premier League (EPL) betting market remains one of the largest in the world. Due to the global attraction of the EPL and the high amount of television coverage, sponsors will pay millions upon millions of pounds to be featured on the jersey of a Premier League football club. It should not come as a surprise that such a large percentage of Premier League clubs have shirt sponsors from sports betting websites and casinos.”
The big cat
In July this year, the new NUFC home shirt was unveiled but will this be the last one with the Puma stamp on? The German sportswear brand signed only a short-term extension contract to produce the 20-21 home kit…for the last season? One thing that we can be sure of is that Nike won’t be collaborating with the team. A spokesperson for the company dismissed the idea and confirmed that there have been no talks held with NUFC to date.
Rumours were flying around between wholesalers as to who will take over from Puma, though the brand may retain NUFC for another year at least as sales of the shirts have been good. And the timeframe to secure a new sponsor is looking a bit tight.
Leaked
On the 10th August, our suspicions were confirmed, that the leaked images of the away and third kits were in fact true. The ‘fizzy yellow’ and ‘prism violet’ shirts will be worn by the boys now throughout the 2020/21 campaign. The jury’s out on how the fans feel about the shirts, let’s just hope they bring the club plenty of success then we’ll all be heading off to buy our own on the high streets.
The future of online gambling
The July signing with Fun88 is great news for NUFC who can look forward to a solid partnership for years to come, as well as the many benefits that the Asian betting site will bring with them to the club. It did spark some controversy though, with experts pondering over the future of online gambling, or whether there is a future at all with the government looming in the background to reform the entire industry in the UK.
NUFC are of course not the only club to be sponsored by a gambling company and in the Premier League, every club has a partner with a betting firm.
