Bruce issues update on Saint-Maximin & Schar – and says 3 players could return for Man Utd trip

Steve Bruce has shared an update on Allan Saint-Maximin and Fabian Schar after the duo limped off with new knocks in yesterday’s 3-1 win over Burnley at St James’ Park.

Elsewhere, the NUFC boss has also revealed that Lascelles, Dummett and Clark could all return to training a week on Monday – a much needed boost if Schar’s latest shoulder issue is a bad one.

Starting with the Saint-Maximin injury; it doesn’t seem to be too serious, with Bruce describing it as a ‘sore ankle’ after he took a ‘nasty kick’ from Phil Bardsley – the former Sunderland full-back who couldn’t get close to him last night.

“His ankle’s obviously sore, he took a nasty kick on it.

“It’s been a difficult period for Allan in terms of fitness levels, but we’ve seen the value to him when he’s on the pitch.”

Hopefully, he’ll get up to full fitness during the International break and be ready to terrorise Man United’s defence in two weeks time!

As for Schar, the news doesn’t seem as positive, with Bruce clearly fearing he may have injured the shoulder that was operated on over the summer.

Speaking with caution, Bruce stated that we won’t know full extent of the injury until the results of his scan come back:

“I’ll not know about Schar until we scan him.

“We hope he hasn’t disrupted his shoulder where he’s just had surgery.”

“The kid’s in a bit of pain”

On the plus side, it sounds like THREE other defenders could be back in action soon:

“We hope that Dummett, Clark and Lascelles will be back in training a week on Monday.

“So we have the international break to get them right.”

Schar’s injury is definitely worrying, especially considering the injury issues we’re already managing in that position – however it may force Bruce’s hand in seeking a centre-back on loan before the window closes?

Hopefully the Swiss international is OK – although you’d think this will keep him out of international duty following his recent call up.

Let’s hope all five are fit and ready to return ahead of our trip to Old Trafford in a few weeks time!
