Newcastle ‘interested’ in Manchester Utd’s forgotten man & Ligue 1 star – The Athletic

In his latest piece for The Athletic, Chris Waugh has named TWO players Newcastle have been showing interested in ahead of the January transfer window.

The first revolves around Steve Bruce’s hunt for another centre-back, with Waugh reporting that Manchester United outcast Phil Jones could be one to watch.

With him no longer on the scene at Old Trafford, he reveals how Jones was someone the NUFC boss identified after a loan deal for Arsenal’s Rob Holding collapsed – not that he’d be an inspiring arrival or much of an upgrade (if at all!) on what we currently have.

The second name mentioned is Reims striker Boulaye Dia.

The Athletic confirm that he is someone we have been watching closely of late – and we’re bound to have been impressed after seeing him surge clear in the Ligue 1 scoring charts with eight goals in as many games this season!

This is the second outlet to report on our interest in the 24-year-old, with The Chronicle revealing earlier this week that the Senegalese international is a player we’ve been scouting ahead of the January transfer window.

Dia would be a risk, but one who may be worth taking based on his explosive start to 2020/21, with him powerful, mobile for his size and also able to play out wide.

As for Jones, I’m not sure we’ve seen anything from him in recent seasons to suggest he’s the man to sort out our defence – no matter how much experience he may have at Premier League level.

Would you be happy if the former England defender arrived on Tyneside in 2021?
